Author's Note: Family time! Thank you for the reviews and likes and follows. As I said. There was no proof in the Manga the Commission abused him, however it is assumed they were brutal with their training. Plus this is a bit of AU so we'll see where this goes.

Chapter 19 - Family Time
Keigo watched out the window as the car pulled up to his building. Azumi was standing outside waiting for him and waved at him when he started waving and chirping excitedly from the car. His wings were fluttering and he barely gave Guen time to open his door before he ran out of the car and into Azumi's open waiting arms. She hugged him tight and picked him up, laughing as he nuzzled into her neck. As Guen shut the door, he turned from his spot to wave and call out. "Thank you!" The driver paused to look over and saw both Azumi and Keigo waving to him. A short wave and small smile was all they got before he was back in the car driving away.
Azumi hugged Keigo and turned to walk into the building as he started talking about his day, wings fluttering behind him. Keigo was all over the place talking about tests and flying, his feathers and the doctor's examination of his wings. He kept a firm grip on her as he spoke and Azumi couldn't help but lean over to kiss his temple, stopping the flood of words. He looked at her with wide golden eyes before burying his face unto her neck again, a chirping noise as he mumbled. "I missed you." She laughed and unlocked the door. Setting him down to take his boots off as she slipped off her shoes. "Keigo, it was one day at the Commission so far. I won't complain about the cuddles but you have a lot more to go you know. But come with me so I can hear everything about your day and you can hear about my day." He hung up his backpack and hoodie and blinked as she took his hand and guided him towards the sofa.
She sat down and made room in her lap as Keigo climbed up and into her lap, straddling it like he normally did so he could look right at her as he spoke. "I have an aid. Her name is Agent Bend and she was really nice. She says her job is to make me comfortable and answer questions and help me find places. Oh! They also gave me this bracelet so I can go all over the place and use the elevator. And the first part of the day all I did was these worksheets about stuff I didn't know and I solved puzzles and tried to do good, but they never told me how I did." He held up his bracelet for her to look at as he kept talking. "And then after lunch I got to run and jump and lift things and Miss Bend said I did really good, especially when they let me fly, they seemed really happy about that. Did you know they have an indoor arena where I could fly around and carry a wagon?"
Azumi shook her head no, a smile on her face and a happy glint in her purple eyes as he told her about his day. His feathers seemed out of sorts, so she began preening and correcting them as he continued. "Well they do, and I got to fly around in it. And then we went to this doctor's room and they were looking at my eyes and feet and wings and they asked a ton of questions. They even asked if my feathers on my wings grew back and I told them they did but I didn't want to show them and Miss Bend came in and told them that they were done and we were gonna wait in the lobby and then Guen showed up and drove me home! Guen's really nice, he offered me a soda on the way home because he said I looked tired out. Did you know they have a small cooler in the seat with juice and soda? I didn't know cars had that!"
He sounded surprised and Azumi laughed as she kept working on his left wing. He quieted down and watched her work on his wing as they shifted into a comfortable companionable quiet. He slowly asked, a hand moving to touch her cheek and draw her eyes to him instead of his wing. "Mama? What's wrong?" She looked at him and leaned into his hand. "What makes you think something is wrong little bird?" Keigo's golden eyes were searching back and forth at her own as he spoke quietly. "Your eyes look sad and you haven't told me about the doctor yet." Azumi smiled and stopped preening his wings to hug him close.
"The doctor did a special x-ray today and found out I have a bruise right here in my brain." She gently tapped her left forehead. "And there's two different ways to fix it. Both are a little scary and I don't know which one is the right one." Keigo hugged her back as he listened, turning his head up to look at her as his wings came around to hug her as well. "What are they?" Azumi rocked him gently, smiling when his wings wrapped around her. It was one of her favorite things about being hugged by him. "One is medicine that I have to take everyday for a long time. If it doesn't work or I hit my head again then they need to do a special surgery." He rested his head on her chest looking up at her. "And the other option?" Azuki sighed.
"The other one is really scary. It's the special surgery, only it would be more invasive and there's a risk I might sleep for a very long time afterwards." Keigo's eyes widened. "Like dying?" She shook her head no. "There's always a risk of that, but this is what's called a coma. I would be alive but asleep until my brain healed." He gripped her tighter, a frown on his face as he looked thoughtful. "What did Mr. Soji say?" She looked down at Keigo and tilted her head. "How do you know Soji came with me?" Keigo grinned and pointed to his nose. "Because you smell like him." Azumi's face flushed as she stuttered over what to say and Keigo giggled.
"He thinks I should do the medicine and save the surgery for an emergency or if the medicine fails." Azumi went back to hugging him, the comfortable silence returning. Keigo finally spoke again, breaking the quiet as his wings clung to her. "I don't want you to sleep for a really long time. If you do the medicine, I'll help with everything you need. I'll do chores and help you get a drink and learn to cook." Azumi smiled and kissed the top of his head. "Alright little bird, I'll skip the surgery and do the medicine. But you only need to help if I ask you too. I'm the mom, it's my job to take care of you until you are an adult ok? That includes cooking and laundry and playtime!" Azumi began to poke and tickle Keigo, causing him to wriggle in her arms and flap his wings trying to get away. Giggles and squeals left his lips as she continued to tickle him, his feathers remaining soft as he flapped his wings and tried to use them as a shield.

They had ordered Yakitori and Teriyaki for dinner,
followed by a bath for Keigo and baking cookies for Azumi so he could take them with him the following day. The rest of the week seemed to fly by for Keigo. He continued his tests and assessments, gaining praise from Agent Bend for everything he did and he was getting more comfortable around her. Guen also talked more in the short time he had been picking up and dropping Keigo off, the latter sharing the homemade cookies with the former and that seemed to form an instant bond. By Friday, Keigo was used to the schedule of school, lunch, physical training, snack and quirk assessment. Azumi was also packing the apartment for their move down to the bigger apartment at the end of the month. Keigo had tried to help. But she refused to let him do any heavy lifting saying he needed to rest for his classes every day.
When he was dropped off at his building, Azumi was waiting for him every evening, and she walked him down to meet the car every morning without fail. On that first Friday, Azumi seemed to be in a hurry to get back up to the apartment, forgoing the regular pickup hug she had been doing, and instead encouraging Keigo to hurry and follow her into the elevator and down the hall. When they walked into their apartment a brown and red blur slammed into Keigo as leathery bat wings grabbed him and Keigo's vision was full of large bat ears. "Jin!" Keigo dropped his backpack and hugged his best friend as Jin started talking a million words a second, not even giving Keigo time to get his boots off as Azumi picked up hjs backpack.
"Keigo! I mithed you tho much! You need to tell me everything about your new thchool and what you learned becauthe my tutor ithn't letting me learn anything fun. There'th no more kidth at the houthe now and everyone elthe ith gone and no one would play with me. Oh! And thereth a new hero movie we have to watch becauthe it hath All Might in it and your Mom thaid we could thtay up and thee it after dinner. Did you know you're gonna have tacoth for dinner?" Keigo laughed at Jin and flapped his wings excitedly as Jin stood back to look at him and curiously grabbed his wrist band. "What'th thith?" Keigo grabbed Jin by the clawed hand and looked at Azumi. "Mama, can we go outside and play?" She glanced at the window noticing it was a bit dark because with winter came shorter days and they weren't into spring yet.
"You need to come in when the streetlights come on." They both nodded and ran out the door, running for the elevator to take it to the ground floor. Keigo yelled to Jin as he pressed the call button. "I'll explain everything outside." Jin nodded and pushed up his tinted glasses as the boys hurried downstairs and out the back. The grass was still winter dead brown and the trees were not budding yet. It was a bit dark, but the streetlights were off and they could see just fine between them. Keigo barely got six feet from the door when Jin took off flying ahead of him. "Hurry up thlow poke!" Keigo's wings snapped out and he flapped them hard to hurry after Jin.
The two dodged and played in the air before Jin managed to grab Keigo's hood from behind and yank it over his head. While Keigo was trying to get the hood off he felt something slam into one of his wings and he dropped to the ground with an audible 'oof!' rolling to a stop. Jin landed next to him and cocked his head with one bat ear up. The other flat on his head. "You ok Keigo?" Keigo could only blink his golden eyes at his friend before grinning and asking. "How did you do that?" Jin helped him up and made sure he was ok before Keigo inspected his hit wing. His feathers were messed up as if he had gotten hit by something. "Did you hit me and still remain airborne?" Jin shook his head. "No, I uthed a wing currant." Keigo looked at him expectantly and his friend rolled his eyes.
"You don't know how to uthe a wing currant?" Keigo shook his head. "What is it?" Jin lifted both arms to show his wings and dropped one hand so his right wing was out. "When you flap your wingth, there'th a thnap in the air when your wing cometh up right?" Keigo nodded and mimicked what Jin was doing. "When you feel that thnap, you bring your wing down quickly and it'th like flicking air at thomeone. Taketh practithe." Keigo tried flapping his wings hard and fast. Then tried with just one, a faint snapping noise was heard when he brought his wing up. "Whoah. I never thought about that. How did you learn this?" Jin looked at the ground mumbling. "One of dad'th friendth. Hey you haven't told me about the Commission yet. How ith it?"
Keigo walked next to Jin and started explaining his daily routine for the last week. He described Guen, Miss Bend, the doctors and teachers and how they were examining his quirk. Jin listened quietly, only asking a question or two when he didn't understand what Keigo was saying. They found they had walked around the building a few times by the time Keigo was done. Jin walked with his hands clasped together behind his head so his wings could stretch. "You are tho lucky you don't have to deal with the tutor. He'th mean, yellth a lot and thayth I'm not good at anything." Frowning, Keigo bumped into his friend's side playfully. "That's not true, Jin. You pick up hero stuff way faster than I seem to be able to." Jin smiled at Keigo. Eyes closed and a wide grin on his face. "Thankth Keigo." The streetlights came on, along with the lights outside the building and both boys ran inside to get upstairs.
Azumi had made taco fixings and left both boys to load up their own tacos. Cans of soda were set down in front of them both at the counter top seats and they dug in, laughing and goofing off. For Keigo, this was exactly what he needed after a week of tests and assessments. After dinner, they washed up and changed into their pajamas as Azumi pulled a bunch of pillows and bedding into the living room to make a giant nest in front of the TV. The boys hopped onto it and cheered when Azumi put on the new hero movie that was on demand. She waited a bit for them to be enthralled in the movie before she slipped into the bedroom.
A hand went to her head and she bit her lip, eyeing the new rows of pill bottles that made up her regime of medication. They were marked with how often, and a plastic tray with multiple little tabs had been filled up for her. She took her evening meds with some water and laid on the bed, an arm over her eyes as she waited for the crashing headache to go away. She didn't even wake up when the movie finished and both boys creeped into the bedroom, spotting her laying on the bed passed out. Jin was about to ask, but Keigo put a finger to his lips and motioned for Jin to help pull a blanket over her. Keigo dimmed the lights and kisses her cheek gently as they tiptoed out of the room, Jin whispering. "What'th going on with Mith Athumi?"
Keigo explained it, as best as he could from his understanding, and Jin looked down with a frown as if hearing that made him more upset then it should. He put a hand on Keigo's head and earned a glare from his friend. "I'm still the same age as you, jerk face." Jin grinned as he tried to contain a yawn. "Only until April." The boys went back to the nest in front of the TV and flipped to the news to watch hero interviews as they drifted to sleep. Jin ended up curled into Keigo's side and Keigo had a wing wrapped around Jin. That's how Azumi found them when she woke up the following morning.

Weekends at the Commission building were slow. Most of the training programs ran during the week and weekends were for individual training and growth. Agent Bend was looking through the test results for the week, making notes and adding observations, her desk covered in folders and paperwork. A man walked up to her desk, his brown eyes and plain hair that made him look so average betrayed how dark he could be to his assets for the company. He only warranted a glance from Bend before she kept working, the man leaning on her desk.
"You must really like this one Bend. Here on a weekend doing all those fine little details of his file." She pointedly glared at him as she kept scooping it all up. "What do you want Slicer?" He grinned and snatched up a page with a profile picture of Keigo grinning. "He looks happy. Still on his assessments?" She snatched the paperwork away with a glare. "My trainee, my method. I guess they trust me to get him started since they took away your assignment. Is that why you're here bothering me?" Agent Slicer frowned at her and narrowed his eyes. "Just because he couldn't handle the training and broke doesn't mean they took him away from me. He's recovering on floor 30." Bend shuddered involuntarily.
Every asset and trainee was given a handler called an aid that was an Agent, there to aid them in their lessons and training. Each Agent tried to get the most out of their asset by pushing them to be the best, this competitive streak in the aids and students led to a lot of strong heroes from the training program. The agents chosen were able to use their quirks for discipline when their assets needed it. Slicer had the ability to move his fingers and slice open parts of the human body on the outer skin and internally if he wanted. He could also close them by moving the same finger back. If he refused to do that, floor 30 had a full surgical team that would have to perform stitches to correct the damage without scarring. It made Bend happy that her own quirk didn't require such brutal recovery methods.
Bend's quirk was the ability to bend any object she touched without breaking it. While it hurt to have to use it on children, she took comfort in the knowledge her bending quirk would give the pain of a broken arm or finger without actually breaking the bone. She was supposed to be growing closer to Keigo Takami so that he would be willing to confide in her, trust her, and eventually obey her when the time came for orders to be issued. He was so trusting that it was easy to gain his trust halfway through the first day. With his tests and assessments done already. They could begin his schooling and training.
Slicer leaned over to look at some of her notes. "You aren't doing him any favors by praising the things he does sub par. He needs to know that excellence is a requirement not an option." Bend glared at him again and shuffled her paperwork together. "You focus on your own assets and leave me to mine. If I remember correctly, yours can't even control his own flames without burning his body up. And you sent him to the 30th floor after punishment. No wonder he isn't doing well." The agent narrowed his eyes at Bend and pointed at her stack of papers. "His body is resistant to cold not flames. He was defective from the time he got here. You would think being the son of a hero he would be better at this but I believe he is lazy."
Bend stood and hugged her paperwork as she turned to walk out of the office. "Just don't forget our own performance is based on how they do. You keep sending him to floor 30 and you're going to face the same punishment for failing that he will." With that, she walked out of the room and down the hall for the elevator. She got results every time, which is why she had been chosen for Keigo. She knew a child's breaking point and how to manipulate them better than most. In the elevator, she pulled a pen out and wrote a final note on one of the pages before stepping off at floor 15 to submit them all.
'Need to have a familial connection broken for full potential.'
