Emily leaned over the engine of their tractor with tools spinning around her head. It was something her mother had gotten used to since the first time a bottle went flying across the living room when she was about a year old.
"How's it coming?" she asked setting a glass of water down near her daughter.
Emily didn't look up from her task at hand, "Almost got it. Belt broke, but we had an extra. I'm just putting it back together."
Beck leaned against the tractor and considered her daughter covered in grease. "Have I told you I love you today?"
Emily smiled and tightened the last bolt. She pulled herself out of the engine cab and wiped her hands off on a rag. "This morning I think."
"Must've forgot," Beck replied with a teasing smile. She reached over and adjusted Emily's glasses admiring her daughter's rich brown eyes.
The two women stood in silence looking out over their new farm slowly coming together.
"I think I'll take a walk with Copper." Emily pushed away from the tracker and called for the pup heeding her mother's warning to be careful with a wave of her hand.
The sun was bright and warm on her green skin, but the wind sent goosebumps up her arms. She shivered wishing she'd brought a jacket. Winter and Bessie lifting their heads from grazing as she passed and snorted at the excited pup in tow.
Emily entered the shadowed woods with a sense of comfort. She could disappear in the foliage and let her worries fade. It didn't matter who she was, why she was so different, or what she was missing. In the woods she could be alone in a way she chose. A little power taken back.
She sighed picking up a stick and tossing it into the bushes off the path. Copper yapped and bounced after the stick but was distracted by a bug. Emily smiled with a small laugh rolling her eyes at the crazy mutt.
She sat on a fallen tree looking down at her green hands. She lifted a rock from the ground without touching it. When the rock rested in her hand, she ran her thumb along the cool, smooth surface.
"Are there other's like me?" she wondered aloud half hoping the universe would answer her. Her eyes watched the clouds drifting by through the bare branches. No answer came. The universe was as silent as ever much to her disappointment.
She tossed the rock away and scuffed her foot against the dirt. As much as she tried to not think about it the thought of being alone forever ebbed at her mind. Not like anyone would love her or accept her. Not when she was green or could move things with her mind.
Eventually her grandma and mother would pass, and she would be alone. And that worried her to no end.
Staring down at the orange and burgundy covering the forest floor she wondered if her existence would fade away as silently as leaves in the fall. Bright and beautiful and gone all at once.
I just finished writing a chapter about Emily and I lover her so much. Thanks for reading!
