When the time finally came to get everything ready for the meeting with Kelly in Peru - she had a new problem. She had no passport because hers had been lost in the jungle years ago. She had no visas - hers had all expired years ago. She had no personal identification - it had all been lost years ago as well. And she had been living in the wrong country for several years now. Catherine was fretting and gritting her teeth about going to battle on this gigantic administrative headache. She was literally having nightmares about sitting on park benches in the middle of the night crying again.
Juan simply smiled and laughed. This was his jungle. There was no reason to fool with any of that paperwork business, nobody out here ever did any of that. He would simply take her through the jungle to meet up. He knew the place and all the jungle in between. She could pose as his wife like last time. Fr. Antonio insisted on drawing up the marriage paperwork for them in case anyone asked. Juan had his reserve military credentials - this sort of thing was fairly common, so it would be no problem. They put on wedding rings and off they went.
Whenever they got stopped - she would only speak in his local Brazilian Amazon dialect and feigned not knowing anything else other than jungle Portuguese.. "Indiano" did all the talking and they got right through.
They met up with Kelly, Rob, Jacinda, Julie, and her aunts in a small Peruvian village. The world is a small place - Rob had known Juan's father from his own military days doing DEA work in Brazil. Jacinda instantly saw the connection between the two of them and asked were they married?
They laughed and showed her the paperwork. "So" Julie's mother exclaimed "It's so good to have you with us on your honeymoon!" They laughed. Oh, it was just for the paperwork. She smiled "Did he say 'I now pronounce you husband and wife?'" "Yes". "And you are wearing rings?" "Yes". "Well, then, you're married. See, it says so right here. Anyway, I could tell as soon as I saw you two."
The two of them laughed about being "married." It seemed so completely ridiculous to say it out loud and the rings felt so strange on their hands.
But later on that night.. She curled up on his shoulder. "I didn't realize how much I missed this when you went home."
He smiled "I missed it too. It felt like my whole house was empty all over again."
She smiled "I noticed you found a lot of things to fix at the mission."
He smiled again "I had to make sure I could eat dinner with you - I'm not much of a cook. So, do you want to be married?"
She smiled "I do. Do you want to be married?"
He smiled "I do. So I guess it's official then. We can't argue with Fr. Antonio - We're married."
And so they spent their "Honeymoon" doing medical work in the jungles of Peru.
When they returned to the mission six months later, everyone could see the change in them. Fr. Antonio teased her that she was no longer allowed to don the black robes of the nuns - those were for single women only. And of course married women could not live in the mission when their husbands lived so close by... She must now go live with him. And she couldn't work such long hours now that she had a husband to take care of unless there was an emergency. Juan had an actual bed, a gas stove, and hot water there. Catherine was smiling.
The nuns also teased them that she must now buy some actual clothes - she hadn't worn anything except nuns robes and old worn out ill-fitting men's clothing the whole time they had known her. She thought back and realized she hadn't owned actual clothes in the better part of ten years and had even gotten in the habit of chopping her hair shorter with hospital scissors or a razor blade when it got too long.
But now since this was Juan's wife - he was proud of her and wanted her to feel good. He was utterly amazed at how good she did look in quality clothing and with actual styled hair. She was stunning - as in every man in the whole place staring at her beautiful. He almost didn't recognize her when she came out of the dressing rooms. She looked so completely and totally different. Juan was smiling.
Their next return to the mission was even more interesting. The nuns literally did not recognize her when she came in. One of her nun friends walked up to her and asked her if they could help her - they assumed she was some sort of lost tourist. She played along for a bit until Juan came in and took her hand and kissed her. The nuns were shocked - what was Juan doing with this tourist woman? He was just married! Then it finally sunk in - this was Juan's wife, Catherine, the doctor! Then they all came and crowded around her to look. How could this be the same woman? They were both smiling.
And so she continued her medical work there on the destitute. She would spent about half the year at the mission and the other half in the jungle with Juan. She was training several more nuns in medical work as well. She was happy serving the destitute and she was happy living with her actual, real life husband.
