"Abby, what's the matter?" Ducky asked, looking up from his model, interrupting his monologue about the history of the train. She looked like she would soon be in need of his particular services…heaven forbid!

He thought about what her day had entailed so far, and knew she was going to the hospital to interview to be a kidney transplant donor for a young woman on the other side of the country. The young woman had been poisoned with something that destroyed both her kidneys and needed a transplant in order to have any kind of a life of quality.

Oh, dear Lord! What if the hospital found out something was wrong with her?!

Hoping that it wasn't what he feared, he started the conversation by telling Abby that donating a kidney was a serious thing to consider…especially when doing so for a stranger. That's when she dropped the bombshell.

"The coordinator was amazed that both me and my brother would be matches, but not too amazed considering it's for our isister/i," Abby explained while wringing her hands and pacing.

"I didn't know you had a sister," Ducky exclaimed. Then again, until several years ago, he hadn't known about Gibbs' first wife and his only daughter.

Abby paced some more and said, "Neither did I. And the brother she mentioned wasn't Luca. I talked to him and he didn't know about it." She explained that part of the screening process included a more in-depth matching system, which showed a near-perfect match between Abby and her brother, and a match indicating that the sister was a half-sibling to them.

She was freaked out at the thought that not only had her parents had given up two children, but that one of them wasn't a full sibling…meaning that one of them had cheated on the other during their marriage. It would have had to have been her dad, because she never remembered her mom being pregnant – and she would have been about 9-10 at the time. And she didn't remember her parents ever being unhappy…not unhappy enough for something like this to be going on.

A few days later…

Gibbs let Abby in, wondering if she actually spoke to the guy that McGee tracked down or if she let her fear stop her.

"I talked to him, but didn't tell him who I was. He's having the surgery tomorrow and doesn't need the added stress of this on top of that," Abby babbled. "Plus, I need to work some stuff out."

"Like what?" he asked.

She explained that she figured out she was adopted by running a DNA test on the hair from her mother in the locket she wore. But she felt like she didn't know who she was anymore. And was her sister also given up for adoption or did her bio-mother/father keep her after giving up Abby and Kyle? How would she track her half-sister down?

All Gibbs could do was comfort Abby and assure her that her adoptive status didn't change who she was.

And if someday she really wanted to find her sister, they'd do it together…because family wasn't just about DNA.

A/N: Rather than continuing with new ideas, I thought I'd be nice and post the follow-up to show the NCIS side of yesterday's fic…even if it was years later.
