"Go tell whoever you're gonna bring, and then make sure you all grab your packs and the few duffle bags we have, I'm expecting there should be a lot of food, no one else is going to think about raiding the airbase for that," Lilly reminded Scott who let out a short nod.
The former hardware store worker headed out of Lilly's room and scanned the Motor Inn parking lot once more, thinking over who would be the best choice to bring along with him and Lilly. Immediately he knew Larry was out, if Lilly didn't ask him herself then she didn't want him coming and it wasn't like he was going to join if he asked regardless. Scott lightly considered asking Doug as they were becoming close friends but he couldn't forget that Doug had done nearly the worst at gun training yesterday and despite being brave, wasn't the greatest around the dead.
Scott noticed Carley making her way to the top of the RV to start a morning watch, he accepted that her keen eye would best be used here while his group was gone as well. With three people already out, Scott knew he had to make a decision before he was left alone with only Lilly. He spotted Lee and Kenny in front of the RV, the latter muttering in irritation as he attempted to take apart something deep inside the engine while Lee held a light for him.
Scott jogged over to the pair and moved to the right side, resting against the machine and peering into it, "You doing alright, Ken?" Scott asked the southern man who shook his head with a grumble,
"Damn belt is shot and I need to change it, only problem is the damn thing is all snagged up inside!" Kenny grunted while digging a screwdriver down into the engine block, trying to free the engine's belt, "Then, if I can get this damn thing free today, I gotta go try and find a new one!"
"What are you doing, Scott?" Lee calmly asked, glancing up at him,
"Lilly's got this plan to head up to her old airbase, she's got a lead on some food and wants me to grab two others to come with me, without leaving this place shorthanded with defenses," Scott explained, "I was thinking about asking you two,"
"Can't," Kenny immediately replied, not thinking too much of it, "Good luck to you and whoever you take, and I hope you find some shit for here but I gotta focus on this machine, need to get it roadworthy, ya know?" He explained, looking up at Scott expectantly,
"Yeah, sure Kenny, I totally get it," Scott nodded back causing Kenny to look back down into the engine, "What about you, Lee?"
"Sounds like you could use the hand," Lee thoughtfully replied, "Ken, think you can handle this on your own?"
"Yeah, yeah, honestly probably just get in the way here," Kenny lazily replied with a toss of his hand, "Go on, no problem,"
"Alright, Lee grab your pack, try not to take too much, Lilly thinks we're gonna be filling our packs to the brim," Scott said while he and Lee walked away from Kenny and the RV, "She even wants us to grab the duffel bags we have,"
"For real? How much food does she think we'll be getting?" Lee asked back in surprise,
"She's thinking a few months worth, hence why she needs four of us instead of the standard two-person runs we take," Scott replied,
"Makes sense," Lee thought aloud, "Give me a few minutes to say goodbye to Clem and get what I need ready,"
"Of course, oh and Lee, bring the ax, never know when we'll need something like that," Scott smirked,
"Never leave home without now," Lee chuckled back.
As Lee left Scott and headed towards his room to gear up, Scott turned his attention to Larry and Andre working on the north end of the wall. For Scott it wasn't even a question on who else he wanted to bring with him, he trusted Andre and he knew the officer knew how to handle himself. "Andre!" Scott called out, causing the man to turn, say something to Larry who angrily waved him off before he came jogging over.
"What's up Scott?" Andre asked,
"It's Lilly, she's got me going on a run with her up to her old airbase. She wanted me to get two others to go with us, I already got Lee and I was figuring-" Scott explained only to get interrupted,
"That I could go out there with you and watch your back," Andre finished for him, "Of course, I owe you a hell of a lot, you need my help, I'm there,"
"Thanks Andre, Lee's getting his shit together now, pack light, leave space in your bag, Lilly thinks we'll be bring home a lot of food," Scott said while giving the officer a quick pat on the shoulder,
"Sounds good to me, just need two minutes and I'll be back out here." Andre nodded while jogging back to his room.
Ten minutes later Lilly had everyone gathered by the front gate, "Alright everyone," Lilly announced as she looked over the survivors in the camp, "I have a lead on some food that can keep all of us fed for months. I'm taking Scott, Lee, and Andre out with me today a few miles up the road back to Robinson's, my old airbase."
"Why would we take the risk going so far out?" Doug asked in genuine curiosity, "Seems quite the risk for only a lead is all I mean," He added on,
"The commissary at the air base is stocked with three months worth of food, it's also locked up tight. Now I know where the keys are, I know the base, and I'm certain that no one else would have had the thought to raid it for food, weapons sure, but not that," Lilly replied with completely confidence,
"What will you do if the base is overrun? You guys can't expect to just walk inside a deathtrap," Carley quickly spoke up,
"Odds are it's going to be overrun, and if they're too many we turn back, but if we can get through them, then we'll take the risk, it'll be worth it." Lilly sharply replied,
"Enough out of all of you!" Larry suddenly barked out, "All you fucking people do is complain! She's coming up with solutions and keeping us alive, so can it!"
"Why don't you take it down a notch, old man," Kenny growled out while shaking his head in disgust,
"Hey, come on keep it together guys," Scott quickly interjected, "I'm sure we'll be back before nightfall and we'll all sit down and have a filling meal. Until then everyone just continue to focus on what you've been doing. Doug, your traps, Kenny, the Rv, Larry, the wall, and Carley, keep a lookout, alright?"
"What don't you learn your place, and stop trying to tell me what to do!" Larry spat back,
"Christ, it never fucking ends with you," Andre muttered with a shake of his head,
"Okay, enough of this shit, we need to get going," Lilly firmly stated while stepping forward, giving her father a quick kiss on the cheek, "Stay safe, and please stay calm, I'll be back soon,"
Larry let out a short exhale and nodded, "I know you will punkin," Larry softly replied, "Be careful,"
"Clem, you stay close to Katjaa and Duck while I'm gone, alright?" Lee said while kneeling down in front of the girl,
"I will," Clementine agreed before embracing him in a hug, "Please come back soon, okay?"
"Aw, don't worry, Sweet Pea, I'll be back before you know it," Lee warmly replied,
"Watch your back out there guys," Carley said towards Scott and Andre, "I wish I was going with you,"
"I'm not," Andre chuckled, "I'd rather one of us be back here protecting the others, camp needs a good shot on watch,"
"And I'm sure Doug here doesn't mind you staying behind," Scott added while glancing over to the slightly dorky man,
Doug scratched the back of his head and let out a smile, "Uh, yeah, I can't exactly argue with that," Carley flashed the man a short smile before looking back to the others, "So, yeah, good luck out there you two,"
"Thanks, both of you," Scott replied while nodding to them both,
"Okay, guys, let's get this fucking show on the road," Lilly called to Andre and Scott as Lee pushed the dumpster gate opened.
The four survivors stepped out of the safety of the Motor Inn and headed up the street following Lilly's lead. It was sure to be a long walk and there was no telling who they'd run into along the way or what state this airbase would be in when they finally arrived. Scott glanced between each of his fellow survivors and thought if he should talk to any of them along the way. Then again, keeping a vigilant eye out for any dangers or perhaps opportunities along the way might be a better use of his time.
