A/N: This one picks up right where the last one left off :)
Once Drew calmed down, he hiccupped and looked at Jay, "Is it okay?"
"Is what okay?" Jay asked and gently wiped the tears from Drew's face.
"What I said," Drew sniffled and looked between Jay and Hailey, "Am in trouble?"
Jay smiled a little and shook his head, "You're not in trouble," he hugged Drew again, "Thank you for calling me 'Dad.'"
Hailey rubbed Drew's back, "And more than that, thank you for trusting us enough to call us 'Mom' and 'Dad.'"
Jay nodded, "We want to always protect you like parents."
"I know you're good at protecting cause that's your job," Drew mumbled.
Hailey laughed softly, "Now our more important job is taking care of you and loving you," she lightly touched his hair.
Drew winced, but he still looked at her and smiled, "Okay."
"Okay," Jay repeated and set Drew on the ground.
Drew gasped and leaned into Jay again, "No, no."
"It still hurts?" Hailey asked and carefully looked at his foot, "It's a little swollen still. We can keep the ice on it."
Drew groaned and covered his face, "Doctor Will's going to need to cut off my foot!"
Jay chuckled and stood with Drew, "No one's foot is getting cut off." He carried him outside where the others were still eating, "Just a bee sting."
"Ouch, bud," Adam pushed a chair out for Jay to set Drew in, "Those are the worst."
Hailey nodded and passed Drew the bag of ice, "Once the swelling goes down, you'll be much better."
"Do you have to cut your foot off?" Cara asked.
Drew sighed, "Apparently not."
Cara nodded, "Good. I don't like pirates."
Kim laughed and shook her head, "You're too silly."
"You always say that," Cara smiled.
Vanessa passed Jay and Hailey their plates, "Still hungry?"
"Starving," Hailey said, "Thank you."
Hailey and Vanessa told Kim they'd take care dishes since she was hosting and Kim didn't even blink before accepting, so they were in the kitchen quietly loading the dishwasher when Vanessa said, "Are we going to talk about the elephant in the room?"
Hailey laughed, "What elephant?"
"He said, 'Dad!'" Vanessa smiled, "This is huge! Jay's gotta be ecstatic."
Hailey nodded, "I think he is," she shook her head and laughed softly, "He's been waiting all week since Drew said 'Mom.'"
"He said 'Mom?'" Vanessa asked.
"Yeah," Hailey's smile grew, "It was super sweet and he was nervous, but it was perfect. He keeps slipping it into conversations too and I love it."
Vanessa squealed quietly and hugged Hailey, "I'm so happy for you."
"Thank you," Hailey said, "It's…surreal, and now that he's said, 'Dad'…I feel like we're on our way to becoming a real family."
"You are a real family," Vanessa nodded.
Hailey smiled, "Thank you," she took a deep breath, "I can't believe we did it sometimes, but I'm so glad we did."
Vanessa laughed softly, "And do you think you'll have more?"
Hailey raised her eyebrows, "He's been with us over two weeks and in our life for like two months, cool it."
Vanessa shrugged, "You never know," she sang softly.
Hailey looked out the window at Jay and Adam racing through the yard with Drew and Cara on their backs. Kevin put a hand up and seemed to declare Adam the winner. She smiled as Jay held Drew upside down and tickle his sides.
"Maybe someday," Hailey breathed and laughed as Jay set Drew on the ground only for Drew to start chasing him.
The power came back on at Kim's house later that night, so Jay and Hailey took off with Drew to check on their own place.
"Oh sweet air conditioning how I've missed you," Jay said as he walked in the house.
Drew laid on the ground inside the door, "It feels so good."
Hailey laughed, "You two are so picky. It wasn't that bad."
"It was horrible," Jay shook his head and brought the bag with their towels and swimsuits to the laundry room.
Drew nodded, "I felt so gross last night."
"All right, you were pretty sweaty," Hailey said.
Jay came out, "Now that we have power, I declare a movie night."
Drew sat up, "Yes! Can we have popcorn too?"
Hailey crossed her arms and laughed, "Oh my goodness, you two are too similar."
"Nothing wrong with that," Jay chuckled and walked to the living room.
As the movie played on the TV, it couldn't keep Hailey's attention and she found herself searching online at the local school district. Drew was going to have to start at a new building this year since Hailey and Jay's house was out of the boundary lines of his other one, and she wanted to make sure everything went as smooth as possible.
She tried looking up the different second grade teachers, but wasn't having much luck on her personal computer. She shut her laptop and tried focusing again on the movie, but her phone buzzed and when she looked at it, her eyes about jumped out of her head. She glanced at Jay and Drew laying together on the couch before heading upstairs.
Jay's eyes followed her until she was out of sight. He sighed and pulled Drew closer against him.
"This is the best part," Drew whispered and ate a handful of popcorn.
Jay smiled and nodded; eating from his own bowl, he turned back to the movie and pushed any thoughts of Hailey out of his mind.
An hour later, Jay poked his head in his and Hailey's room, "I just put Drew in bed, you want to say goodnight before he's completely asleep?"
Hailey turned from the window, "Sure," she said softly and walked past him.
Jay let out a deep breath and went in the bathroom to shower. As steam filled the room, Jay jumped when the shower curtain was pushed back and Hailey stepped in. "What're you doing?" he chuckled.
Hailey shook her head and pressed him against the tile. She kissed him slowly and whispered, "The door's locked. Please."
"I…" Jay swallowed and gently pulled away, "What's going on?"
"I'm just in the mood," Hailey said and squeezed his arms, "Please."
Jay stared at her, "Hailey."
"No," she said sternly and kissed him again.
Jay dried his face off, "I love…love taking showers with you, but come on, that started pretty weird."
Hailey glanced at him out of the corner of her eye and started brushing her teeth.
"So we're not going to talk about it?" Jay asked and pulled his shirt on.
Hailey rolled her eyes and continued watching herself in the mirror.
"Okay," Jay breathed and walked out, "I can wait."
Hailey spit in the sink and leaned against it, groaning softly. She finally slipped her pajamas on and walked into the bedroom to see Jay sitting up in the bed.
"Hey, wife," Jay smiled and patted the spot next to him.
"Don't call me that," Hailey mumbled, but she still went to sit next to him.
"I know, you're not my property," Jay kissed her head, "But we vowed to stay together for better or for worse and you seem to be slipping in that worse category right now."
Hailey closed her eyes and leaned into Jay, "My mom texted me."
"Yeah?" Jay asked softly, "What's she up to?"
"Wanted to know why she saw a little boy in your backseat," Hailey said.
Jay slowly nodded, "How-"
"She was leaving CVS when we were at that light and had the windows down," Hailey couldn't help but laugh, "She said she recognized my beautiful singing voice."
Jay chuckled, "You do sound amazing when you sing Queen."
Hailey smiled, "I know."
Jay brushed her hair back, "So she saw him absolutely killing it in the car. Did you tell her who he was?"
"I called her and said he was a foster boy staying with us," Hailey said softly.
Jay nodded, "And?"
"And she wants to get dinner with us this weekend," Hailey breathed.
Jay shook his head and rested his head back against the wall.
"She's my mom," Hailey said, "What was I supposed to say?"
"I don't want your dad there," Jay stated, "That is not up for debate."
"How am I supposed to control that?" Hailey asked.
"By telling your mom that we'll only introduce her to Drew if your dad's not there, it's simple," Jay shrugged.
"Easy for you to say," Hailey whispered.
Jay froze, "What?"
Hailey's eyes widened, "Jay, I didn't mean it like that."
Jay shook his head and got out of the bed, "We both know what you meant and that was low, Hailey."
"Jay," Hailey sat up on her knees and reached out to grab his hands, "I just meant that it's easier said than done."
"I need to be alone right now," Jay let go of her hands and walked out.
"Jay," Hailey breathed.
Hailey stayed awake staring at the ceiling waiting for Jay to come back in the room, but one hour passed, then two, and it was half midnight when she fell asleep.
Jay was tossing and turning on the couch. He was stuck reliving the same nightmare over and over and over again. He groaned low in his sleep and choked back a sob.
"Dad?"
It was coming from far away and Jay tried pushing past the red to reach it.
"Dad, you're scaring me."
Jay woke with a start when a cold hand touched his face.
"Sorry! I'm sorry!" There was a loud band and Jay winced as he tried remembering where he was.
Jay blinked, "Drew?"
"Yeah?"
Jay rubbed his eyes and sat up to see Drew lightly scratching his arms on the other side of the coffee table. He swallowed and couldn't bear to ask, but knew he had to, "Did I hurt you?"
"No," Drew shook his head and bit his lip.
"Come here," Jay breathed and put his hand out.
Drew slowly walked over and hesitantly sat on the couch.
"I'm so sorry," Jay said softly.
"Why?" Drew asked.
"For scaring you," Jay said.
Drew shook his head, "I-I was worried. You were crying."
Jay blushed, "I'm sorry you saw that."
"Are you sad?" Drew asked.
Jay breathed deeply, "Remember when we talked about PTSD?"
Drew nodded quickly.
Jay nodded in return, "Well, sometimes those bad memories I was talking about come up when I'm sleeping."
"Nightmares," Drew breathed.
"Yeah," Jay said softly and looked around the living room. He rubbed his face remembering why he slept on the couch anyways.
Drew watched him for a minute before reaching out and holding Jay's hand, "When I have bad days, you hold my hand, so I'll do that for you too."
Jay looked at him and smiled a little, "Thank you, bud."
Drew nodded and sat quietly. He looked at the coffee table and noticed all the photo albums. He held onto Jay's hand while reaching forward and picking up a smaller silver one.
"That's our wedding album," Jay breathed.
Drew looked up at him, "Why were you looking at it?"
"I…" Jay shook his head, "I just like looking at it sometimes and remembering that day."
Drew let go of Jay's hand and flipped through the pages. He smiled as he recognized the majority of the faces.
Jay yawned and stood to put the other three albums away.
"Mom looked really pretty," Drew said.
Jay turned back and smiled, "She's always pretty."
Drew nodded, "But especially here," he pointed to a picture.
Jay walked over and his smile widened, "That's right after we got married and were walking down the aisle."
"Can you print this for me?" Drew asked.
Jay raised his eyebrows, "You want a copy of this picture?"
"Yeah, I'll add it to my room," Drew said and looked at it with a small smile.
Jay smiled and nodded, "Sure, I can do that for you."
"And this one," Drew held up the album to show Jay a picture of him with Adam and Kevin, "They're our friends, right? Officer Kevin is really funny and now Officer Adam's going to be Cara's dad, so I want pictures of them too."
"Of course," Jay lightly squeezed Drew's shoulder and walked in the kitchen to start a pot of coffee.
Drew followed him, "Did you fall asleep while looking at the pictures? Why didn't you sleep in your bed?"
Jay bit his lip while grabbing two mugs out of the cabinet, "It just happened."
"Does Mom know?" Drew asked.
"Yeah," Jay said quietly, "She knows I slept down here."
"Then let's go wake her up," Drew walked over to grab Jay's hand and drag him upstairs. He pushed open the bedroom door, "Mom?" Hailey rolled over to face them; her face was blotchy and her eyes were swollen, so Drew ran over to her, "You're sick!"
Hailey sniffled and shook her head, "I'm not sick."
Drew crossed his arms, "I don't believe you." He climbed on the bed and set his hand on her forehead, "I don't know what I'm feeling for."
Jay chuckled and walked over, "If you do that, it means you're looking to see if she's warm." He looked Hailey in the eyes before gently resting the back of his hand on her forehead, "She's okay," he breathed.
"I don't know," Drew said. He chewed his lip and lightly brushed Hailey's hair with his fingers, "Do you want us to bring you pancakes?"
Hailey laughed softly and shook her head.
"I'm going to hug you," Drew whispered before wrapping his arms around her shoulders tightly.
Jay sat on the bed by Hailey's feet and waited for Drew to pull back before saying quietly, "Drew, can I talk to Hai-Mom alone real quick?"
Drew nodded and looked at him, "Take care of her."
"I will," Jay smiled slightly as he watched Drew walk out. He turned back to Hailey, "Good morning."
Hailey wiped her face, "Good morning," she whispered.
"I shouldn't have left like that," Jay said and played with the comforter, "Wasn't fair. I hate going to sleep in the middle of a fight or a disagreement or whatever."
Hailey nodded and reached out to softly set her hand on Jay's, "I should have gone down to you. Don't blame yourself. I was in the wrong from the start."
Jay shook his head, "You'd think I'd cool it on your dad, but I still can't help myself and just word vomit."
Hailey smiled slightly, "Your feelings are valid…growing up was extremely hard because of him."
Jay's jaw set and he nodded.
Hailey tilted his head up, "What I said was wrong, Jay. Bad role model or not, he's still alive and to throw in your face that your dad is gone was unacceptable."
Jay lightly brushed his hand over her face and hugged her against him.
"I'm sorry," Hailey whispered, "I didn't mean to hurt you like that. I was the definition of word vomit."
Jay chuckled and held her against him, "Our parents make us emotional and maybe a tad irrational at times."
Hailey nodded and pulled back, she kissed him softly, "I love you."
"I love you too," Jay replied and kissed her forehead.
"How'd you sleep?" Hailey asked and set a hand on his cheek.
Jay shook his head, "You?"
"What happened?" Hailey raised her eyebrows.
"Just a nightmare," Jay shook his head, "Drew woke me up."
"I'm so sorry," Hailey said quickly, "I should have been there."
"It's fine," Jay said, "It's okay. I'm okay."
Hailey shook her head in disbelief, "I'm sorry."
"Don't apologize, you can't control them anymore than I can," Jay squeezed her hand.
"But you're less likely to have them when we sleep in the same bed," Hailey argued.
"I should have come back up here, I was the one who fell asleep on the couch, this was one me," Jay stated, "End of story."
Hailey bit her lip and shook her head; she hugged Jay tightly.
"I'm okay," he whispered again and rubbed her back, "Trust me."
"I do," Hailey breathed, "But let me worry about you. I don't like when you're in those situations and I'm not there."
Jay smiled a little, "I can go without my rock for a night."
Hailey laughed and shook her head, brushing her thumb across Jay's cheek, "Don't expect it to be a normal thing."
"Absolutely not," Jay said.
"I couldn't sleep either," Hailey sighed.
Jay ran a hand over her hair, "Maybe we take naps today."
Hailey smiled, "I'm not opposed to that idea."
"Perfect," Jay kissed her softly.
A/N: As always, thank you so so much for all your super kind reviews. It makes me so happy to get a notification from all of you. I've also been reading through your suggestions, so please keep sending them! I love thinking of ways to incorporate them in. I do keep getting a lot asking for a pregnant Hailey though and that's not in the plans for anytime soon, maybe not even this exact story but in a sequel or something like that if I'm writing in this same world, but maybe I'll write a one-shot for it if you'd like? Let me know what you'd like! If I do a one-shot, it might not be in this same world because I wouldn't want to give anything away from here unless I feel like spoiling some of my ideas haha
