Gray had been staring at the ceiling for ten minutes straight. Tomorrow is Saturday, and it would be another usual Saturday if he didn't do something about it. Just another ordinary Saturday that he spent alone.
That idea didn't sit well with Gray.
But, how could he turn tomorrow into something special? He had been staring at his ceilings and still he didn't have any idea.
Gray let out a sigh as his mind pictured someone who made him suddenly aware of the weekends. A beautiful girl with her wavy blue hair and her crazy blush when she looked at him. Who looked so cold towards other boys but became so shy when she was around him.
A girl that goes by the name of Juvia Lockser.
His student which captured his heart the moment he saw her.
Well, at first, it was just a pure curiosity of him. Juvia had been blushing from the moment their eyes met when he introduced himself in her class for the first time. She was so shy around him and yet she had no problem with other boys in her class. She stuttered when she answered his questions in class, but she had no problem talking with her friends. The way she acted around him piqued Gray's curiosity. She was different from other girls that had a crush on him. Unlike the other girls Gray had seen before, Juvia walked away when he was nearby. She chose to be his admirer from afar, rather than being bold and pursued him.
After a few weeks of being intrigued by her shyness, Gray decided to make the first move.
As usual, she was hiding behind a pillar not far from him while he was buying his lunch at the school's cafeteria. But today, Gray decided not to eat at the cafeteria. He walked away and as he thought, Juvia followed him. He led them to the back garden of the school where there was nobody during the lunch time.
Juvia hadn't realized that she was running out of places to hide until Gray suddenly appeared in front of her. She yelped out of surprise and embarrassment and was about to run away when Gray grabbed her hand.
Juvia instantaneously blushed and Gray was afraid of her head exploding.
"A…a…a…."
"Whoa," Gray chuckled upon hearing her stammers. "calm down. I won't hurt you."
Juvia's legs staggered but Gray readily caught her. His hand was firmly placed around her waist. Juvia blushed even harder and Gray had to slap himself mentally to not kiss her right there right then. She looked so cute to him.
"Juvia Lockser," Gray stared at Juvia's eyes directly. "I know you've been following me around for the past few weeks."
"A…a… J… Juvia…"
"I won't reprimand you for that." Gray chuckled slightly and he helped her to stand straight on her legs again. But he kept his hands firm around her waist and her own hand.
"Y—you don't mind, Gray-sensei…?" Juvia squeaked.
Gray shook his head. "In fact, I sort of like it."
Juvia instantly looked up and her face grew even redder when she saw Gray's own onyx eyes. "Y—yes?"
"Would you give me the honor of taking you for a date this Saturday?"
Right now, Juvia's face was so red Gray was afraid it would really explode in the next few seconds. But she couldn't shake her eyes away from him. She hadn't been able to since the first time she saw him in class.
"Well?" Gray asked after waiting for a couple of minutes.
"Y—yes!" Juvia replied instantly. "I would be honored to, Gray-sensei!"
Gray smiled. "Then, I'll see you this Saturday."
Juvia's smile beamed and that made Gray's heart skipped a beat. He inwardly thanked the rule that allowed him to date one of his students. Who would ever thought that the first girl who managed to snatch his heart would be his own student?
And after that, Gray couldn't stop thinking what he should do with Juvia this Saturday. Gray wanted to make the day special for both of them. He wanted to take a step past the border of being a teacher and a student and get to know her better.
But since this would be the first time he had ever asked a girl to go out with him, Gray was at lost. He browsed some ideas on the internet, but nothing seemed compelling for him. And even after staring at the ceiling for a long time, he still didn't know what to do.
Gray glanced at the clock and he let out a heavy sigh. He only got around five hours left before Saturday came.
Running out of options, Gray called the one person he didn't think he would ever call to ask something like 'how to take a girl out'. But right now, that person was the only one Gray could think of for asking help.
"What?" Natsu's voice greeted him from the other side of the phone.
"Dude, I need your help." Gray admitted on the first second.
"If you want me to help checking that homework of yours, I'm hangin' up." Natsu blatantly said.
"It's not that!" Gray spat. "Look, I really need your help."
A silence fell between the two of them for a while. Gray hoped his voice sounded desperate enough. Finally, Natsu's voice was heard again. "What is it?"
"Can I go to your house?" Gray asked. "It'll be easier to talk about this face to face."
"I'll just go to yours." Natsu said. "10 minutes."
Gray and Natsu were like ice and fire. They rarely got along together. But once they found things they could both agree on, they were totally in sync. And even though they bickered a lot, they knew they could rely on each other's shoulders.
True to his words, Natsu arrived at Gray's apartment ten minutes after he hung up.
"What is it?" Natsu asked as he stepped inside. "Did something happen?"
"I'm stumped." Gray said. "And I have no idea why I'm looking for your help, but I can only think of you. Especially because you have experiences with Lucy."
Natsu froze for a split second but Gray didn't notice it. He then looked at Gray, suspicion flashed in his eyes. "What are you talking about?"
"I'll just get it done." Gray took a deep breath. "How did you ask her out?"
That question apparently short-circuited Natsu's brain. "…What?"
"Lucy." Now Gray started to get annoyed. It was embarrassing enough for him to ask that kind of suggestions from Natsu! Why did he make it even harder for him?! "How did you ask her out for the first time?"
Natsu blinked for several times before breaking into a cheeky grin. "Who's the girl?"
"What girl?" Gray spat.
"The one that made you this stupid." Natsu smirked.
"Are you looking for a fight?!"
Natsu broke into a laughter. "You're looking for me because you don't know how to take a girl out?"
Gray threw a pillow at Natsu. Since he was busy laughing, Natsu didn't even bother to catch the pillow. He didn't even mind on the fact that the said pillow just slapped him right on his face. He was so amused that he toppled over while still laughing.
"Shut up!" Gray's ears were red from embarrassment. Now he regretted his decision of asking Natsu for help.
"Oh my god, Lucy needs to know about this." Natsu said.
"Don't you dare!" Gray glared. "Just answer my question, flame-head!"
Natsu's laughter died down as he managed to control himself again. Although he couldn't stop his smile from forming. Seeing how red Gray's face right now and how confused he was were enough for Natsu to realize just how serious he is towards this particular girl.
"Well, I don't think you can use my idea to take your girl out on your first date." Natsu said.
"What did you do?"
Natsu shrugged. "I took Lucy to her rooftop to see the stars. In pajamas."
Gray blinked. "Why?"
"Because I can't sleep." Natsu blatantly said. "And because she loves to stargaze."
"Okay…" Gray mumbled.
"But maybe you can start from there." Natsu said.
"I'm not that crazy!" Gray retorted. "I couldn't just whisk her to her rooftop in freaking pajamas and—"
"Not that, moron." Natsu scoffed. "I mean, start from doing things that she loves. She ought to have something she really loves to do."
"Ah…" Gray slightly nodded and then went silence into his own thoughts.
"I heard Juvia loves the aquarium." Natsu grinned.
Gray's face reddened upon hearing that name. "How—how did you…"
"You're the one who told Levy you're interested in her." Natsu said. "And I'm not deaf, you know."
"But how did you know about the aquarium?"
"I heard that from Lucy and she heard it from Levy." Natsu answered. "Since Levy is her homeroom teacher, I think the information is pretty much valid."
"Lucy, Levy, you both are my life savers." Gray muttered.
"Honestly, why are you so confused on how to take her out?" Natsu asked.
"Duh. It's my first time, flame-head." Gray rolled his eyes. "You've known Lucy since you guys were babies, so of course you wouldn't understand my dilemma."
Natsu scoffed. "Dilemma, my ass. For someone who have feelings for you, everything you do would always be special for them, dimwit. No matter how small or how cheesy it is."
"I know, but still… I want to make our first day together a memorable one." Gray muttered.
Natsu almost laughed again but he held himself. Of course, he could relate to Gray's wish very well. It was exactly the same thing he wanted when he planned his first date with Lucy.
"Just take her to the aquarium tomorrow." Natsu said. "Spending the entire day there with you would be memorable for her."
"Is that would be enough?"
"Take her to lunch and dinner afterwards." Natsu shrugged. "Keep it simple for the first time, dude. You ought to learn a lot by doing simple things."
"Is that what you did with Lucy?" Gray asked which Natsu replied with a nod. He then scoffed. "You should just date her already."
Already did., Natsu grinned inwardly. I even married her. "Anyway, just don't exaggerate. And definitely don't rush anything. Like you know, whisking her to a love—"
"I'm not a bastard, you ass!" Gray threw another pillow at Natsu. "I won't do anything she doesn't like!"
Natsu chuckled. Well, of course he knew Gray wouldn't rush anything. Even though he looked like a cold jerk, Natsu knew just how gentle he is with girls. It showed on how caring he is towards Levy and Lucy because he took them as his sisters.
"And… What about—ugh—clothes…?" Gray mumbled.
Natsu had to tried so hard to swallow his laughter again. "Keep it the usual way. You gotta be comfortable for the first time."
"Okay."
"Now, get your phone and tell her where and when will the two of you meet tomorrow."
"Oh, that's right!"
Gray quickly snatched his phone from the desk and quickly typed his message to Juvia. Natsu silently smiled and wished his best friend—don't ever tell Gray he considered him that—good luck.
Either it was because of his excitement or instead nervous, but Gray couldn't sleep. He didn't even feel sleepy for a slightest. When his alarm clock rang, he just sat up on his bed with his eyes wide awake.
After one hour of trying to calm down his nerves, Gray stood up and made his way to the bathroom. And 30 minutes later, he was waiting for Juvia in front of the aquarium already. He bought the tickets already once he arrived and he shoved them into his pockets. He glanced at his reflection on a store's windows, making sure he looked, well, okay.
Following Natsu's idea, he was just wearing a dark-blue shirt with black pants and white sneakers.
"Gray-sensei!"
Gray turned his head and his hands unconsciously gripped the tickets in his pocket. Juvia was running lightly towards him, but she… She looked so cute and beautiful. She was wearing a knee-length white skirt and light blue blouse. Her wavy blue hair was let loose. Her dark-blue flat shoes accentuated her white legs.
"Oh… Uhm… H—hey." Gray mumbled, his heart was beating faster than it used to.
"I—I'm sorry I'm late." Juvia fidgeted.
"I—it's fine." Gray managed. "Shall we go in…?"
Juvia nodded lightly and the two of them walked into the aquarium in an awkward silence. Gray took a deep breath and pulled out his hand before it got sweaty inside his pocket. His fingers twitched but he braved himself to took Juvia's hand into his.
Juvia's breath hitched slightly but she didn't shake her hand away. That simple gesture was enough to send her heart doing somersaults. She hoped her hand wouldn't get sweaty.
But their awkwardness and shyness went away once the aquarium's view came into their sights. The place was so beautiful, it made them felt like they were underwater. Both of them were mesmerized by the view.
Since it was the weekend, the place was packed with lots of people. Gray's instincts kicked in, and he let go of Juvia's hand. Then he placed his hand around Juvia's shoulder firmly, placing her close to him. Gray froze for a split second upon feeling how right her body fitted into his.
Juvia's breath hitched again but Gray's warmth was enough to calm her frantic heart down. It felt so comfortable and so right. Juvia couldn't believe that the one person she gave her heart to actually replied her feelings back.
Both Gray and Juvia enjoyed the aquarium very much. They visited every corner, taking pictures here and there, and joined every available performance there. They even ate their lunch there because they didn't want to leave just yet.
They left the place when it was time for it to be closed.
"Wah, that aquarium is so beautiful!" Juvia sighed in content, her hand was back into Gray's tight hold.
"You like it?"
"Very much, sensei!" Juvia beamed.
Gray flicked his fingers lightly on her forehead. "Don't call me that. We're not in school."
"Eh? Then… How should Juvia address Gray-sensei…?"
"Just use my name."
"Juvia cannot do that!" Juvia's face blushed. "It's too embarrassing and it's impolite!"
"I don't mind."
"Juvia minds!" Juvia slightly pouted. "How about… Gray-sama…? Yes, that sounds better!"
"No, it's not." Gray scoffed.
"But… Juvia—Juvia prefers to call you that way, sensei…"
Juvia didn't intend to, but Gray melted when he saw her pleading eyes. "F—fine…"
Juvia's face beamed and that was enough to make Gray's brain malfunctioned. He grabbed her shoulders and pulled her into his hug, his face dipped down to hers. The next second, his lips met hers.
Juvia gasped out of surprise and Gray took his chance to deepen the kiss. She didn't struggle in his hold and instead replied his kiss back shyly. Gray used his free hand to support the back of Juvia's head while his other hand kept its firm position around her shoulders.
Before they turned into the whole crowd's spectacle, Gray pulled himself slightly and placed a bit of distance between them. Both of them were slightly panting and dazed.
"G—Gray-sama…?" Juvia found her voice first but her breath choked. "W—why…?"
"Are you seriously asking me that?" Gray scoffed. Man, kissing her felt so right and so good. Gray knew he was about to get addicted to that, but he kept himself in control. He didn't want to rush anything, and he knew Juvia wanted to take it slowly as well.
Juvia's face was as red as a boiled crab right now, but she hugged Gray tight. "Juvia loves you, Gray-sama!"
Gray hugged her back and kissed the top of her head lightly. "And I love you, Juvia."
Gray had just returned to his apartment after dropping off Juvia to her house and sat down on his small but cozy living room. He couldn't stop his smile at all. On their fourth date, he finally met Juvia's parents and spent a little time with them. Juvia had introduced him to her parents and that made him so happy. And the fact that her parents didn't immediately kick him out of their house nor acting cold towards him only made him even happier.
He couldn't wait until his parents came back from their own overseas trip to introduce his girlfriend to them.
Ah, how he loved that word 'girlfriend' so much. One simple word that showed the world that Juvia is his. He was so glad he plucked up his courage to make his first move.
Just then, Gray's phone rang and without looking, he just picked it up.
"Gray!"
"Yo, Levy."
"I JUST SAW SOMETHING CRAZY!"
Gray winced and pulled his phone away from his ear a bit. "Ouch! Have I ever told you how loud your shrieks are?"
"Nevermind that!" Levy huffed. "Did you hear what I said?!"
"Yeah. What is it? Don't tell me… You saw Gajeel has a pink underwear?"
"What? No! How did you even know whether he has a pink underwear or not anyway?"
"There's nothing crazier than that for you, right?"
"There is! It's Lu-chan and Natsu!"
"What? They decided to become a couple?" Gray jokingly said. "Lev, you know that's ain't—"
"YOU KNEW?!" Levy shrieked.
Gray fell into a temporary silence as he processed Levy's words. "…What?"
"You knew that they are in a relationship?!"
"SAY WHAT?!"
This time, it was Levy who fell into a temporary silence. "What…? You don't know about this either?"
"Do I sound like I know?!"
"I thought… Well, earlier you said—"
"Since when are the two of them in a relationship?" Gray demanded. "What did you see? How did you know? Why didn't they tell us?!"
Levy told Gray what she saw in the observatory, not missing a detail. "…So, I think the two of them have been in a relationship even before we became teachers!"
Gray was loss at words. He just gaped his mouth while hearing Levy's story. "What the… Are you sure you didn't mistake them for someone else?"
"Are you an idiot!" Levy complained. "How could I?"
"I don't believe this." Gray muttered. "Why didn't they say a word to us? What is the point of our long-time friendship, then?!"
"Should we ask them?"
"Obviously." Gray emphasized. "We have the rights to know!"
"You're right." Levy agreed. "Then, how should we ask them?"
"I have an idea." Gray said. "It's been awhile since the four of us had fun in an amusement park. We take them there and just ask them straight on! We need to lower their guards so they couldn't sneak away from us!"
"Okay."
Damn you, Natsu!, Gray inwardly grumbled. How come you didn't say anything to me about this?!
Done !
Whew, I've been wanting to write down a story about Gruvia for a while and I finally had the chance to ! I've always wanted to portray Juvia as a shy girl while Gray as a more aggressive type, and I'm happy I finally managed to portrait them !
