DEGRASSI: GLORY DAYS - S01E18 - SNOW BLIND

DISCLAIMER: I DON´T OWN DEGRASSI

1. Int. Axel´s Apartment. Evening.

We open on Michelle lying spaced out on Axel´s couch. "Voodoo Chile (Slight Return)" by Jimi Hendrix is playing from the stereo and she plays a little air guitar with her eyes closed. Axel´s apartment is small, but still pretty cozy to look at. A rolled up money note is visible on the table. The door opens and Axel White comes in. He´s a slenderly built 21 year old with shoulder long hair, that he keeps tied with a red bandana. He´s dressed in jeans and an old army jacket.

Michelle:

Was he there?

Axel:

Some guy told me, he got busted.

Michelle:

I can´t go through tomorrow without blow!

Axel:

Do you think I´d let you down?

She sits up. He throws a bag with around 10 grams of cocaine in it on the table and she smiles.

Michelle:

I knew you´d come through.

Axel:

I don´t know how good the quality is. We have to test it first.

Michelle:

You have a willing subject right here.

He lays out a small bit on the table, crushes it and starts cutting it into lines.

Axel:

You go first. I´d rather it´s you that gets sick, If there´s rat poison in it .

Michelle looks a little worried.

Michelle:

How sick can I get?

Axel:

It can kill you, if you get enough in your system. You´re getting it for free, so stop complaining.

Michelle backs off from it.

Michelle:

You go first.

Axel:

Didn´t we agree that you do as I say, when you´re here?

Michelle:

This could kill me.

Axel:

Only if you do a lot. Shut up and do that line!

Michelle rolls up the note and snorts her line. She leans back and looks wasted.

Axel:

Do you feel sick?

Michelle:

No. I just feel high.

He does his line and looks pleased. Michelle lies down again and he gets on top of her. She closes her eyes and dreams herself away as he fondles her breasts.

OPENING CREDITS

2. Int. Classroom. Morning.

Sandra is with mr. Watson.

Watson:

It´s a noble deed. I still wish you´d reconsider.

Sandra:

I would have finished with the others, if I felt I had a choice.

Watson:

You´re aware, that you´ll lose the entire year by dropping out?

Sandra:

I don´t like it any more than you do. Keeping a roof over our family´s heads is more important, than me losing a year. On the bright side, you get a whole year with the pleasure of my company!

Watson:

Lord, help us all!

Sandra:

Just admit that this place wouldn´t be the same without me.

Watson:

It´s good to see your ego hasn´t taken a hit. I look forward to seeing you again next semester, Sandra.

They stand up and shake hands.

3. Int. Hallway. Morning.

Sandra comes out from the classroom to find Ruby and Mike waiting for her.

Sandra:

Last one down.

Ruby:

I can´t believe you´re not gonna graduate with us.

Sandra:

Don´t feel sorry for me. If anything, this has brought out the fighter in me. I´ll be back, stronger than ever!

Mike:

That´s my girl!

He gives her a hug.

We cut to Trish and Kat watching them.

Trish:

It´s so sad.

Kat:

I know how she must feel. When they told me I had to do grade 9 over again, I couldn´t have felt lower.

Trish:

At least you´ll have another "old lady" to keep you company next year.

Kat:

Allow me to express my doubts, that me and Sandra become chummy again.

Trish:

You were once, weren´t you?

Kat:

We hung out a lot in Junior High. She froze me out, after I became pregnant. It´s not the sort of thing you forget.

Trish:

You´ll still have Michelle.

Kat:

If she keeps skipping school, she´ll be stuck in grade 11.

Sandra approaches them.

Sandra:

Hi, Kat. I want to say I´m sorry, for being so mean to you.

Kat:

Oh?

Sandra:

This whole experience has changed me. I hope we can start fresh next year.

Kat:

We´ll see.

Sandra:

Trish, I wish you all the best and I´m sorry, I was a bitch to you. I hope, you didn´t take it personal.

Trish:

I´m way over it. Good luck.

Sandra walks back to Mike and Ruby. Kat looks a bit shell shocked.

Kat:

Did I just see that?

We cut back to Sandra, Mike and Ruby.

Sandra:

That´s it. High School´s over.

She gets a big hug from Ruby and they both shed a tear.

4. Int. Michelle´s House. Day.

Michelle wakes up in her bed, still fully clothed from her bender the night before. She looks a mess and groans, as he stands up. She looks at her digital clock radio, which reads 9:47.

Michelle:

Crap!

She gets out a small bag of Cocaine from her dresser drawer and quickly makes herself a line, that she snorts. She puts the drugs away before leaving her room.

5. Int. Car. Day.

Michelle is driving high, while singing along to "Raindrops Keep Falling on My Head" by BJ Thomas, playing from the radio. Her driving skills aren´t good and because she´s easily distracted, she nearly rear ends the car in front of her at a turn signal.

6. Int. Hallway. Day.

Michelle waits outside a classroom, as students come out from there. Kat comes out and looks at her sternly.

Kat:

Where have you been?

Michelle:

Sleeping took longer than planned.

Kat:

Do you think this is funny? You missed three classes.

Michelle:

I forgot to set the alarm.

Kat:

Do you want to get held back? You won´t be laughing, when they tell you.

Ms. Kendricks comes out of the classroom.

Kendricks:

You turned up after all.

Michelle:

There was only a few minutes left, when I got here. I didn´t want to interrupt.

Kendricks:

Discuss it with the principal. He´s not happy!

Kendricks leaves them.

Michelle:

What do you think, he´s gonna do?

Kat:

There´s one way to find out. I´m glad, I´m not you right now.

Michelle looks like she´s ready to give up already.

7. Int. Classroom. Day.

The 12th graders are waiting for class to start. Ruby, Dexter, Mike and Troy have huddled together.

Ruby:

We should do something nice for her. Something where she can forget her troubles and feel free for a night.

Dexter:

What´s the plan?

Mike:

We get all of us Led Zeppelin tickets for the show next Saturday.

Troy:

Aren´t they almost sold out?

Dexter:

And aren´t they like 30 dollars a piece?

Ruby:

Exactly. We have to raise at least 150 dollars for the tickets and probably 50 more to spend there. We have to get the them today, or risk that they´re sold out.

Troy:

How do you plan to raise 200 dollars in a school day?

Dexter:

It´s nice of you to want to do this for her, but It seems unrealistic.

Ruby:

Dexter Reginald Carlton! Did your momma raise a quitter? I certainly hope not, because I ain´t wasting my time with no quitters!

Dexter:

What are you gonna do, sell kisses for a dollar?

Mike:

If we could get a few members cheerleading squad on board, that could be a start.

Ruby:

They like me, but I can´t get them to kiss any Tom, Dick and Harry.

Mike:

The Niner boys think you´re goddesses. They´d gladly give their lunch money for a little peck on the cheek. If we say we´ll get them tickets, you could probably find a volunteer or two. At two bucks per kiss, that´s 130 kisses.

Troy:

We can do one with Mike and the best looking guys from the football team.

Dexter:

As long as it isn´t me.

Ruby:

It´s not cheating, if it´s for a good cause. I promise that it´s the only time, I´ll make you kiss other girls.

Dexter goes along with it.

8. Int. Hallway. Day.

Michelle comes out from the principal´s office. Kat is there waiting for start walking to class.

Kat:

What´s the verdict?

Michelle:

Saturday detention for the rest of the school year.

Kat:

Ouch!

Michelle:

I only have myself to blame.

Kat:

I haven´t seen you much lately.

Michelle:

I´ve had other things to do.

Kat:

We can hang out tonight?

Michelle:

There´s something, I need to do. We can hang out tomorrow?

Kat:

Sure. Anything special, you need to do?

Michelle:

It´s something, I´d rather get over with. Living on my own isn´t as easy, as I thought.

Kat:

I know I´m hard on you, but I was afraid, you´d fall apart. You´re proving me wrong and I think, you should be proud. If your mom could see you, I´m sure she´d be proud too.

Michelle looks uncomfortable at the praise.

9. Ext. Restaurant. Day.

Sandra and Mellissa are having a cigarette on their break.

Mellissa:

How did your friends react?

Sandra:

They were sad. I went around and apologized to those I´d PO´ed at some point. The ones I remembered anyway.

Mellissa:

Why bother? You´ll never see most of them again.

Sandra:

I´m going back next year.

Mellissa:

Most drop-out´s work jobs like this or worse.

Sandra:

When I find out what I want to do with my life, I´ll make something of myself.

Mellissa:

It´s cute that you dream big, but you know nothing about life yet.

Sandra:

Excuse me! I´m almost 18!

Mellissa:

This world will break you before you know it. Dreams die, when you´re on the bottom.

Sandra stomps out her cigarette and looks annoyed.

10. Ext. Parking Lot. Day.

Two tables have been set up in the parking lot. Troy, Mike and Dexter have a line of about 20 girls waiting to be kissed. The boys line to get a kiss from the cheerleaders is twice as long. Ruby, Kelly and Trish are at the girl´s table, while Tif is counting the money, as it comes in. Dexter hands her a stack of one dollar notes.

Tif:

You´re almost there.

A lucky freshman boy steps up to the table.

Boy:

Can I get a kiss from Trish?

Trish:

If you lay down your two dollars.

The boy lays down the money and gets a kiss on the cheek from Trish. He looks overjoyed, as the next one steps up.

At the guy´s table, it´s clearly Mike who´s most popular with the young girls. He kisses a nerdy Niner girl on the cheek and she couldn´t look happier.

Girl:

Wow! Thanks.

Dexter and Troy eye him.

Dexter:

They could have the star players from the Football team and they want your sorry ass?

Mike:

They seem to like their bad boys.

Samira steps up. Troy looks pleased.

Troy:

Here´s a girl, who appreciates a good man with proper morals.

Samira:

Actually, I was hoping Mike would kiss me?

Troy looks annoyed.

Samira:

Don´t tell dad, please.

Troy:

Go ahead.

He looks away as Mike kisses her on the cheek.

11. Int. Classroom. Day.

Michelle is the first one there. She´s looking "dope-sick" and is staring out the window. The other students begin filing in and she looks away from them as much as possible to hide how she looks. Kat sits down next to her.

Kat:

I didn´t see you at lunch.

Michelle:

I didn´t feel like eating.

She reluctantly looks at Kat, who looks worried about her.

Kat:

You´re looking very pale. Are you sure, you´re not sick?

Michelle:

I have to stick it out.

Kat:

You could infect everyone.

Michelle:

It´s not infectious!

Kat:

How do you know?

Michelle:

I just do! I´ll be fine.

Kat still looks worried about her as class starts.

12. Int. McDonald´s Restaurant. Day.

Montage - Music: "Working in a Coal Mine" by Lee Dorsey

We see Sandra slaving away at her job. She´s as far removed from her glory days as the head cheerleader as she can come. We see her busting tables and mopping up vomit with a disgusted look on her face. Customers, who can´t make up their mind annoy her and it´s harder with each of them to keep her customer friendly smile on. She has to take a moment to go outside and shout out her frustrations. When she comes back in, it seems to have helped. Mellissa giver her an understanding smile and it cheers her up a little.

13. Int. Classroom. Day.

Only Trish, Ruby, Kelly, Troy, Mike, Dexter and Tif are in there. Ttif has almost finished counting the money.

Tif:

372 dollars.

The others celebrate.

Kelly:

Do me and Trish get to bring dates?

The others agree.

Tif:

How about me? I counted the money.

Troy:

With a big smile on your face. I almost think, you enjoyed it too much.

Tif:

Please! They´re Carl´s favorite band!

Kelly:

What if he comes along as my date?

Tif:

You´d do that for me?

Kelly:

If a guy doesn´t think I´m worth spending 30 bucks on, why would I want him anyway?

Tif looks excited.

14. Int. Hallway. Day.

Kat and Carl are talking.

Kat:

Something´s going on, she´s not telling me about.

Carl:

It must be weird, living on your own.

Kat:

Lots of people do.

Carl:

Not 16 year olds.

Kat:

She´s getting by.

Trish and Tif approach them smiling.

Carl:

Where have you been?

Tif:

We had a productive lunch. Guess where we´re going next Saturday.

Carl:

No idea.

Trish:

It starts with Led.

Kat and Carl look overjoyed.

Carl:

You got Zeppelin tickets?

Tif:

Ruby is picking them up after school.

Kat:

I´m so happy for you guys.

Trish:

You´re coming too, as my date.

Kat:

For real?

Trish:

It wouldn´t be the same without you.

Tif:

You could get any guy you want to be your date.

Trish:

Friends are more important than boys.

Carl:

Don´t go giving her ideas!

Tif:

You´re not just my boyfriend, you´re also my best friend.

Carl:

Same here.

Tif and Carl kiss.

15. Int. Car. Day.

Michelle is driving home. "Sailing" by Rod Stewart is playing on the radio. She´s looking very dope sick and nearly falls asleep behind the wheel. She pulls over, opens the window and turns radio all the up, until she continues.

16. Int. Michelle´s House. Day.

We see Michelle francticaly making herself another line. She snorts it and lies down on her bed, finally feeling better.

17. Int. McDonald´s Restaurant. Evening.

Sandra is looking completely worn down. Mellissa comes over to her.

Mellissa:

Take five.

Sandra:

I´ve had my last break.

Mellissa:

The manager´s left. I´ll cover for you.

Sandra:

Thanks.

Mellissa:

I´m doing it, because you look like crap.

Sandra:

How do you do it day after day?

Mellissa:

You´ll get used to it.

Sandra heads to the back of the restaurant.

18. Ext. Restaurant. Evening.

Sandra is leaning against the wall and smoking a cigarette, when Mike comes creeping up on her.

Mike:

Are you working hard or hardly working?

Sandra:

Hey.

Sandra´s face light s up a little. They kiss.

Mike:

Weren´t you supposed to be off work by now?

Sandra:

Someone else quit. I have to work overtime, until they hire a new one.

Mike:

Make sure you get next Saturday off. We´re going to the Led Zeppelin concert.

Sandra looks overjoyed.

Sandra:

How did you afford them?

Mike:

I had to kiss a lot of girls, but it was on the cheek. I hope it´s alright.

Sandra:

I think, I can forgive you this one time.

Mike:

It was Ruby´s idea. Her, Dexter, Troy and some other people are coming too. She wanted to give you a proper send-off.

Sandra smiles, looking full of new energy again.

19. Int. Axel´s Apartment. Evening.

Michelle is waiting for Axel to finish pouring them a glass of wine. She looks uncomfortable.

Axel:

This is one of my favorite Bordeaux´s.

He hands her a glass. She takes it.

Axel:

Cheers.

They both take a sip.

Axel:

Do you like it?

Michelle:

It´s nice. I´m not a wine expert.

Axel:

Me neither, I just know what I like.

He sees that she uncomfortable and seems slightly turned on by it.

Axel:

Relax.

Michelle:

I´m trying.

Axel:

You want those two hundred dollars, don´t you?

There´s a knock on the door.

Axel:

Have a seat. I´ll get the door.

Michelle sits down on a chair. Axel opens the door, letting in Mira White, a pretty, but very petite and frail looking 20 year old. She´s looking as uncomfortable as Michelle is. He shuts and locks the door. He starts closing the drapes.

Axel:

Michelle, this is my step-sister Mira.

Mira:

Hi.

Michelle:

Hi.

Axel gets a camera out and starts changing the lens.

Axel:

We all know, why we´re here.

Michelle:

I don´t like this.

Axel:

If you want money, you have to earn it.

Mira:

It´s no use arguing with him. Pretend like you´re someone else.

Axel:

Listen to Mira. She´s become a smart girl. Start undressing each other.

The girls semi-reluctantly start undressing each other, while Axel takes pictures of them. We fade out.
