Subaru woke up early as usual. He had gotten used to the fact that he only ever slept for four hours. Never more never less. It was the day after he had wrapped up the arc 2 quest. He thought Rem would've wanted to talk to him, but she had instead told him to rest. He himself knew that his body, now that he had slept, was in perfect order, but to a normal person, what happened would probably require a couple days off work, even with healing magic.

Roswaal had returned in the evening after everything had finished and Subaru was stuck explaining what had happened. Subaru couldn't shake the feeling that Roswaal knew something, but as an employee working under him, he didn't want to cause any fuss. On the bright side, Rem was no longer absolutely hostile to him.

That brings us to now. Subaru was supposed to be resting, but he couldn't contain himself. The more he sat around, the more irritated he felt. This he knew was an effect of the system. Sitting around spending time on nothing never irritated him before, but it did so now. Subaru knew he couldn't go to the courtyard to practice or someone would stop him. He was confined to his room being told to rest.

"Maybe I should try sneaking into Beatrice's room?"

Subaru entertained the thought. If it was only studying, then the residents wouldn't complain that much. However, Subaru knew that was only a temporary solution. As soon as he was discovered not being in his room, the maids would search for him. He hoped that Rem would talk to him soon so he could gain her trust.

Instead, Subaru decided to try out his new skill. Despite not being a unique, it was a skill that did have a level attached to it. As Subaru activated it, he saw his mana bar drain a large amount. A bright light enveloped his back. Checking behind him, he found wings now on his back. He tried moving them. The wings stretched out. They were bat-like in shape, but had a vibrant white color to them. Subaru noticed that not only did it cost a good amount of mana to create them, but maintaining them would cost him constantly. Moreover, he couldn't use them to fly. He was indoors, so he couldn't even try, but he had no chance even if he could. While the skills like swordsmanship granted a bit of aid, assisting his movements and correcting him to an extent, this skill gave him no pointers on how to use the wings he was given. He was just able to make them. Although having air superiority was a massive advantage, he would have to train himself how to use it from scratch. The wings would be great, but the amount of training he would have to put in would be massive. He thanked the genius title he had gotten which reduced the amount of work he would have to do, but it would still be hard.

Speaking of titles, wouldn't saving someone's life or saving the village constitute as something worthy of getting a title? He checked the log, but never got a notification of a title. Finally, he checked the title set setting. He had gained two titles. 'Life Saver—granted for directly saving the life of another at risk of oneself. Boosts all stats by 25% when working to save another.' It had a great effect, but wouldn't work if he wasn't in that very specific situation. 'Hero of the Village—causes people to be more trusting of you. Works less on people in larger cities.'

The titles were certainly great, but it was unlikely he would be able to use the effects of either very well. Hero of the village would only shine when talking to small amounts of people. While he appreciated the titles. They didn't seem to alter his strength or such in any real manner. He would keep them in the back of his head.

Running out of things to keep him busy, Subaru lay down on his bed. His mind kept wandering back to his conversation with Puck. The spirit had asked him to be her knight out of nowhere. Subaru was one to think things through. The system was constantly tugging on his mind. It made him want to be as efficient as possible. Fighting was one of the best ways to be efficient and becoming her knight certainly made him more prone to being pulled into combat. However, becoming a knight for that reason was pretty shameless. If he swore loyalty to her for purely his own benefit, what would others think of him?

Subaru thought about the girl that he would be responsible for should he accept. The girl was, absolutely innocent. Her outlook on the world was rather naïve. She always showed kindness to others, even when she didn't know them. A clear example of this was when she healed him on his first day in the world. Despite being a total stranger, she had healed him. He could see why Puck wanted a guard for her. If she was going to be in a royal election, then there would definitely be a lot of people who would take advantage of her.

It wasn't like he disliked Emilia. He just had uncertainties about his qualifications. Puck had reassured him that he would be better in the future, but he would still want to check with the others. In the end, he decided that he would ask puck if he truly thought him able. If Puck accepted that, then he would accept his request, or at least bring it up with Roswaal and Emilia; with Puck present of course. Deciding on this course of action, Subaru sat up.

It was still really boring waiting.

Rem came walking to Subaru's room. She was finally going to get her answers from him. She was about to knock at his door, but it opened before she could. Subaru had seen her coming and decided to invite her in. Cutting right to the chase, Rem began her questioning.

"What are you here for?"

"I just ended up here. It wasn't my intention to come here and start working with you. I just ended up here through a series of unfortunate events. I saw the opportunity to take a good job and I took it."

"Are you working for one of Emilia-sama's rival candidates?"

"No. I just got to this country recently. My run in with Emilia was purely coincidental. I don't even know the names of the other candidates, or how many there are."

Rem paused looking at Subaru; Hesitating to ask the final question. As far as she could tell, Subaru wasn't lying. Her last question was more personal.

"What do you know about the witch cult?"

"Not much of anything. I know the scent of the witch is all over me, but I don't know anything about it."

Rem stared at him, trying to figure out if he was lying. Subaru on the other hand hadn't even heard of it before, but from Rem's tone, they were probably a dangerous group. One that had something to do with the witch, but what?

"Sorry for doubting you. Since you seem to have recovered, Roswaal expects you back to work tomorrow. Until then, rest."

Rem turned to leave the room and began walking. Before she turned the corner, Subaru called out to her.

"Hey Rem, thank you. For trusting me."

Rem didn't reply, but nodded to him and continued walking.

Subaru couldn't bear to be in his room anymore. Besides, he had an important decision to make. It wasn't too late, so Subaru located Puck on his map. He expected Puck to be by Emilia's side, but instead was in Beatrice's room.

Subaru made sure the coast was clear before leaving his room. Every time an inhabitant of the place came close by, he would teleport into one of the rooms or to a different floor. Like this, he managed to escape to Beatrice's room.

He pushed open the doors. No matter how many times he saw it, it was a magical sight. The rows of books were amazing to look at. Less amazing was the state he saw Beatrice and Puck in.

"I missed you Bubby. Even even when you came back, you didn't stop by at all."

Subaru was in complete shock at Beatrice's words. Nowhere was her normal quiet self. Nowhere was the tone she used to talk with him. She acted as old as she looked. Subaru knew that she was a greater spirit and had probably been alive for a long time, but now she acted without regard to her usually seen pride.

"Should I come back at a different time?"

Subaru spoke up, capturing the attention of Puck and Beatrice. Puck simply looked over from Beatrice's arms, but Beatrice adopted a whole new air.

"What are you doing here, I wonder?"

Subaru suddenly felt sense danger slightly tingle in the background and continued carefully.

"I came to speak to Puck, but if this is a bad time, I'll leave."

Subaru turned to leave, but was stopped by Puck.

"What did you want to talk about?"

"It was about your suggestion yesterday."

"Do you have your answer?"

Subaru hesitated here. He thought back on his decision one last time. He would be locked in if Puck gave confirmation again. Subaru had already decided though. He was here to ask him a question. Subaru cast away his hesitation and asked.

"Do you truly think I would be completely qualified for becoming Emilia's knight?"

Puck didn't hesitate with his response.

"I think that your type of attitude is required for being Emilia's knight. Even if a lot about you is unexplained, I know I can at least trust you. Your abilities might be a bit lacking as a knight, but like I said before: you have a great amount of potential. The rate at which you grow at everything you do is astounding. I see no reason why you wouldn't be qualified for the position."

Hearing this, Subaru gave his answer.

"If you believe I have what it takes, then I'd like to accept your suggestion. Will you be there to inform Roswaal of my intentions at dinner?"

"I'll tell him that I'd like you to be Emilia's knight at dinner. Roswaal won't refuse a request from me."

"Then I'll leave you to your… business for now."

Subaru left the room feeling sense danger get stronger with every second. He'd have to apologize to Beatrice later. Leaving the room had put him in a different spot in the mansion. While dinner was only a few hours away, he knew that waiting was only going to irritate him. Instead he moved out to the courtyard. He knew that if he did training of any kind, the others would be upset with him, so he instead opted to play violin.

At dinner, Roswaal was the first to speak up.

"You've ceeeeertainly saved us again Suuuuubaru. If the village had been ravaged, then Emilia would have some troooouuuble. Is there anything you would like as a rewaaaaard?"

"Now seems a great time as ever to say it. Emilia, I'd like to become your knight."

Subaru didn't hold himself back at all. He felt that Roswaal would appreciate it more if he didn't beat around the bush. He also had Puck's backing, so he had confidence in his somewhat absurd request. Puck himself interjected here.

"Subaru is requesting this at my suggestion. I believe he is qualified to become a knight. I have no qualms about his attitude either. Emilia is going to need a knight at some point as well."

Silence fell on the room. Emilia was shocked about this development, while Roswaal had turned serious. Roswaal took charge of the situation.

"Are you prepared for what it meeeeaaans to become her knight? Will you abandon everything to protect her should the situation come to that?"

"Yes, I considered what my duties would be. I wouldn't have accepted Puck's offer if I wasn't prepared for the difficulties of being in that position."

Subaru had prepared himself for it. Roswaal studied him for a few moments before accepting this.

"I seeeeeeee. In that case, I'll begin making the preeeeeeparations for you to be knighted. In the mean time, you should dedicate yourself to traaaaaiiiing and learning the mannerisms of being a knight."

With that, dinner continued on like normal. Subaru would be relived from his duties as a butler and would begin training as a knight. The royal selection had yet to find it's final candidate yet and so he would train until he was fit to be at that level.

And with that, we have the beginnings of each of these issues. I'll update in this format for a couple of chapters. I don't want to flashback or go back in time to show everything happening. I'll divide the chapters based on if we're dealing with Rem, Emilia, or his training/studies. I hope you all find this acceptable.
