Chapter 18: Loss (Battle of Alrest State Park, Part 3)
Nia couldn't believe what she had just seen. The boy she loved had just stood in front of her to take a knife to his chest, saving her. But what of him?
Nia dropped to her knees in the grass beside Rex and took his body in her arms. She could feel him slowly getting colder as the life drained out of him.
"R-rex?" Nia said, her eyes beginning to fill with tears.
He looked up at her and gave her a sad smile. "So this is what it feels like to die." He said.
"Don't say that!" Nia shouted, panicking. "You're going to make it." Nia looked desperately at Rex's friends. "Someone call for help!"
Zeke, snapping out of a trance, took out his phone and dialed 911.
"It's no use." Rex said. " they won't get here in time and I'm losing too much blood. "
"Stop talking like that! You're going to make it, you just need to hold on a little longer!" Nia was not thinking straight.
"Nia?" Rex said.
" What? " she replied.
"I love you."
Nia stopped panicking. She wanted to tell him not to talk like that, to tell him that he was going to live, but she couldn't even find herself to believe it.
"I-I love you too, Rex. More than anything." Nia replied.
Now she couldn't stop the tears that were flowing, she sobbed, crying big, ugly tears. Then, with the small amount of strength that he had left, Rex lifted up his hand and wiped away her tears.
Rex smiled, happy that he was going to die by the girl he loved. Nia screamed a cry of anguish as Rex dropped his hand and closed his eyes.
