Chapter Twenty-Seven
The one that I need
Help me see beyond the surface
My purpose
-Claire Guerreso (Ashes)
The courtyard was dark and empty. A sea of stars filled the black sky above him. Dark locks fluttered around Harry's pale face in the cool breeze. His slender back rested against a tall pillar and he had his knees pulled up to his chest with his chin resting on them.
Professor Dumbledore would not listen to him. He had assured Harry everything was as safe as it possibly could be. The dangers were very much a reality, but nothing the professors couldn't step in should they need too. Pulling out of the competition or forfeiting was not an option.
Harry had tried to put up a fight, even going so far as threatening to transfigure Cedric into a chess piece and disappearing. He'd had it all planned out too. Cast the spell and hide out in the Shrieking Shack until the whole damn thing was over.
"The consequences will be dire, Harry."
Anything was better than ending up with his nightmares coming true.
"You would both be in violation of a magical binding contract. Even if you didn't put your name in the goblet, the goblet recognizes you, and Cedric willingly entered of his own free will. The contract is binding. Backing out could mean death."
He cursed under his breath.
"Why would anyone allow teenagers to compete in something like this?"
He'd stormed out.
Compete and possibly die. Backout and possibly die.
He was trapped.
Footsteps had him turn his head. Cedric was walking towards him. His green eyes lit up and a smile graced his face.
"Hi," the older boy greeted him, returning the smile. Those smoky eyes a spark away from catching fire. "I'm supposed to be meeting my boyfriend here."
Harry's grin got a little bigger. "Should I leave?"
Cedric nodded. "I don't think it would be good for him to see me alone with such a beautiful young man, especially under the stars like this. He might get the wrong idea."
"What if I want him to get the wrong idea?" Harry asked, holding out a slender hand for the bigger teen to help him rise to his feet.
A large hand gripped his and gently pulled him up. "I think that would be inconsiderate of his feelings."
Harry stood on his tiptoes and leaned in close. "Fuck his feelings." He whispered and pressed his lips against Cedric's. Strong arms embraced him and lifted him off his feet as their tongues met.
Cedric squeezed him and the kiss deepened. Harry took a deep breath and pulled back, gazing intently into those smoky orbs.
"The third task is fast approaching," he whispered as Cedric gently lowered him to his feet but kept his arms around him.
"We're going to be okay, Harry," Cedric said, resting his chin on top of his head.
Harry wanted more than anything to believe him, but his dreams were getting worse and worse. They were too real and the cold from them was sinking into his bones.
All he could do was smile and nod his head. He was going to do everything he could to protect Cedric if it came down to it. Winning wasn't something he cared about. His only goal was to make sure they both survived. He was going to have to study his charms and curses so he would be prepared for anything.
"Do you have anything special planned for the 23rd of June?" Cedric asked him, pulling away to look down into those amazing green eyes.
Harry shook his head.
"Now you do," Cedric spoke, lifting Harry's arm and twirling him around. "We're going to need your invisibility cloak."
Harry cocked a brow as Cedric led him in a dance around the courtyard. No music was playing. It was just the two of them spinning around under the silver stars.
"What do you have planned?" Harry asked, allowing himself to be dipped backwards. The top of his head nearly touching the ground. His eyes narrowed, but it must have been his imagination. He'd thought he'd seen a shadow.
Cedric pulled him up. "You'll see."
Harry gave him a warm smile as he leaned up and placed a soft kiss on his golden cheek. The scent of jasmine washed over and through him, chasing the cold away. The ice water left his veins, replaced by a warmth only love could create.
He moved in closer and rested his head against Cedric's broad chest. Harry began to lead the dance with slow movements to the beat of the taller boy's heart. When he was in these arms, he felt like nothing could touch him. He could level entire armies and cause mountains to crumble. Cruelty and wickedness had no power here.
He gazed up into that handsome face and saw himself in those eyes. Cedric was looking right at him, seeing himself reflected. In that tiny moment, time itself stood still.
"I see you," Harry whispered just as Cedric did the same.

Ginny stood hidden in the shadows, doing her very best not to breathe too hard. She had her hand over her heart, struggling to keep her breath under control.
She knew it was Harry and Cedric dancing, but her vision kept changing. One second Harry was himself and the next he was dressed in darkness and shining like a pale star. Terrible to look at for too long. She'd blink and Cedric was normal looking and in another he was pale, bruised, and slightly decayed.
She shook her head and gazed back around the pillar she was hiding behind. The two teens looked exactly like she knew them to be.
Her eyes blinked and Harry was kneeling over Cedric, fingers clawing into his torn shirt, head thrown back, mouth gaping in a silent scream that stirred the air violently. She gasped and stumbled backwards. It was just the two of them dancing in the dark.
Taking a deep breath, she turned and ran.

PRESENT
My heart, my heart
My drowning heart
Oh all the tears I've cried
Oh I may weep forevermore
My love will never die
-Andre Barnes (My Love Will Never Die)
Tom had escaped and that was okay. He was perfectly fine with that. Voldemort would be taken care of in time. Harry had all that he needed now except for one thing, but he'd procure it soon enough.
His altercation with Tom had taught what he'd already known all along. The dark lord was nothing to him now. No spell, charm, or curse could touch him. He had no fear and there was nothing and no one to be used against him.
I am your nemesis, Tom. Behold your creation and despair.
Green blades of grass froze and shattered under his booted feet as he silently stalked through the Forbidden Forest. Tree limbs moved out of his way and roots shrank from his path. Not a single sound could be heard.
His ivory flesh cast a cruel and cold light, illuminating the darkness he walked through.
In the distance a silver white glow shimmered within the dense trees. He could hear a gentle whinny as the entity moved closer to him.
The enchanting white glow took shape before him.
A unicorn. Pure as fresh fallen snow with a single horn pointing towards Heaven.
Gazing upon the divine creature caused his heart to beat once and the pain it caused him was terrible. It was as if his grief was brand new. It stabbed and gnawed as if it were a hungry beast trying to escape.
I don't care how dark I become.
Moving faster than an angel falling in a flash of lightning, his razor-sharp talons slashed through the silky soft throat of Flicker, the unicorn whose single hair had been given for Cedric's wand. Flicker went down and Harry immediately began to gather the blood of innocence within the chalice.
He went down on his knees and sat with the fallen unicorn. Tears streamed from his eyes.
"I'm sorry," he whispered, gently running his talons through Flicker's mane. "I'm so sorry."
The unicorn drew its last breath and Harry wept. His skin took on the luminescence of ice and the shadows closed him round. He rose to his feet and emerald green eyes became pure poison.
Holding the golden chalice close, a terrifying smile made the very shadows shudder. Tears streamed from poison green eyes. He now had everything he needed.
I'm coming, my love. We'll be together soon. And all the world shall be ours.
