"I feel like we were definitely supposed to turn right back there," Hawke said thoughtfully.

Suddenly the sound of singing filled the cavern. Anders snapped his head around looking for the source but could see nothing. "Did you guys hear that?"

"- left was right – what, Blondie?" Varric turned around, checking on Anders.

"That voice. That singing." He looked around once more before noticing the concerned looks from his companions. He shook it off and just tried to reassure them. "Never-mind. I'm sure it was nothing."

Varric stared at him for a long moment before shrugging and turning back to Hawke. "As I was saying, it didn't make sense to turn right. I'm sure this is the way to go."

Anders slowed down a little, putting some distance between himself and his companions. Looking around quickly once more, he whispered to himself, "I can hear you, but I won't. Some look for trouble while others don't. There's a thousand reasons I should go about my day and ignore your whispers, which I wish would go away." He sang a responding tune to the voice he heard.

Hawke and Varric stopped their conversation, looking back. "Uh, Varric?"

"Yes, Hawke?"

"Is Anders just singing to himself back there?"

"It seems so."

"Should we worry?"

"Hmm…Not yet. Maybe he's just bored."

"How could he be bored when he's with us?"

"Hawke, we've been arguing about directions for almost an hour. How could he not be?"

Ignoring his friends up ahead, Anders continued responding to the voice. "You're not a voice. Just a ringing in my ears. And if I hear you, which I don't, I'm spoken for, I fear. Everyone I've ever loved is here within these walls," he said gesturing around at his companions.

Hawke and Varric paused bickering once again to stare at Anders.

"I mean really though. This is weird, am I right? Varric? Carver?" Hawke looked around for support.

Carver shrugged. "They're your friends. Checks out."

"Gee, thanks," Hawke deadpanned.

Meanwhile, Anders was getting heated.

"I'm sorry secret siren but I'm blocking out your calls! I've had my adventure; I don't need something new! I'm afraid of what I'm risking if I follow you…" He sashayed over to a nearby boulder before loudly continuing, "into the unknown!"

"Well now he's really going off," Hawke said, watching from a distance. "Should we just…leave him? Can we do that?"

"I would," Carver said with a shrug.

"No! We're not gonna leave Blondie here. Let's just see where this goes," Varric said watching pensively.

"You just want story fodder," Hawke said glaring.

"Of course not! But if it does pan out well, I can't say I'd mind," Varric said trailing off while Anders repeated his last line before singing another call and response.

Ignoring his friends entirely, Anders plowed forwards on the path.

"What do you want? 'Cause you've been keeping me awake. Are you here to distract me so I make a big mistake?"

"Great," Carver said angrily. "That's just what we need right now."

"Carver! He's working through something," Hawke started, "I think. Honestly, it's very unclear what's going on."

"Or are you someone out there who's a little bit like me? Who knows deep down I'm not where I'm meant to be?"

"Aww, oh no. He's really going through it," Hawke said, taking a seat on a nearby outcropping of rock. She patted the space next to her and Varric came to sit and watch Anders go.

"So now it's a spectacle?" Carver asked incredulously.

"It's all about the presentation, kid," Varric explained.

"He's really getting into it now. I want to see where he goes with this," Hawke mused.

"What happened to you guys being concerned about your friend?"

Varric and Hawke exchanged glances and shrugged.

"Every day's a little harder as I feel my power grow. Don't you know there's part of me that longs to go," Anders sang, running up along the edge of the rocky path, "into the unknown!" He spun around, very dramatically, casting an ice spell into the nearby area. Hawke and Varric clapped as Carver sighed and regretted his choices. "Are you out there? Do you know me? Can you feel me? Can you show me?" Anders continued sending up small spells into the abyss around them.

"Are you guys not concerned he's alerting anyone nearby to our location?" Carver gestured wildly at the magical display around them.

"Oh, lighten up, Carver. I think he's doing a great job," Hawke said, waving him off.

"Yeah, he really nailed that last part," Varric said clapping.

"And we're just not concerned about who he's talking to anymore?"

Hawke shrugged. "Probably Justice? I mean, he's done it before. He thinks no one notices, but he's talked to Justice out loud on missions before."

Anders continued dramatically singing a call and response. Hawke teared up a little bit.

"Honestly, guys, the more I think about it, the more I think this is unusual; even for him." Carver looked out at Anders continuing thinking no one had noticed. "It reminds me of something the Grey Wardens told me about when I joined but I just can't remember…" Crossing his arms and going into deep thought, Carver again became quiet.

"Where are you going?" Anders ran further along the path. "Don't leave me alone! How do I follow you into the unknown?"

Carver snapped his fingers, recollection coming to him. "The calling! It almost sounds like the calling! I guess maybe it's just Justice." Hawke and Varric nodded along solemnly as though they too, had already gone through this thought process.

Just then, Anders bent over in pain, grabbing his head. The team ran over with Hawke immediately asking, "You're back to normal? Done singing? What's wrong?"

"Singing? You guys heard me? I thought I was really secretive," Anders trailed off, looking concerned.

"Blondie, you've been belting out a song for the past three minutes. We were just waiting on the finale. You didn't wonder why no one else was moving forward?" Varric tried putting on hand on Anders' shoulder.

Anders moved away, clearly embarrassed. "Yes, well. This is related then I guess. I can't; the voices, the wardens…." He trailed off, falling forward. "I have too much taint in my blood; I can't shut him out. Help me," he said, falling even further. "I will not…be controlled!" His body began glowing as Justice took control.

"See, I told you he and Justice were just having a chat," Hawke said turning away.

Carver put his face in his hands and let out an exceptionally long, very exasperated sigh.

"What?" Hawke asked, turning back around. "You think that's not it?"

At that moment, Anders began summoning demons and preparing to attack.

Carver's eyes went wide. "I called it. It's the calling! I said it was! I knew it!"

Who says you can't periodically visit a fic you started writing literally 8 years ago? Makes sense. So much free time in quarantine. If any one still feels like reading or still has any suggestions let me know! I'm in the mood to revisit and write a few more.
