Meredith woke up the next morning ready for the groundbreaking surgery on Lonnie. She went into the bathroom to get ready for the day when she heard Derek get up.
"Good Morning Love." Derek said, wrapping his arms around her waist and kissing her neck.
"Good Morning to you too." Meredith said, turning around to kiss him.
"I was going to take a shower. Care to join?"
"You're crazy. I love it." Meredith said, kissing him again and taking his hand and leading him into the shower.
Maggie had woken up in the opposite mood as her sister. She had thought the day before was going to be fine and the hard part was already past. Maggie couldn't even count how many times she froze in the OR. She wished she could stay in bed all day, but she knew she had to be strong for her sisters. She went downstairs and started making a pot of coffee. She poured a bowl of cereal and turned on the tv. She saw Lexie walk through the front door, looking very happy.
"Hey Lex. Where were you last night?"
She looked shocked as she turned to look at her sister, "Oh, I was um, out for drinks with some people from the hospital, and just stayed over at their house."
"Who was it?" Maggie asked, knowing something was up.
She knew she was caught, "Margaret Pierce you have to swear to never tell a single soul what I'm about to tell you."
"Not even Meredith?"
"Especially Meredith."
"Lexie, what did you do?"
She went quiet for a moment, then got the courage to tell her, "I'm in a secret relationship with Mark Sloan."
"OH MY GOD."
Lexie covered her mouth, "Shhhh!"
"oh my god." Maggie whispered.
"This is why I said don't tell Meredith."
"When? Where? How?" Maggie asked.
"I started talking to him shortly after he came here. I felt bad and he's really hot."
"Alexandra Caroline Grey, you're dating forbidden fruit."
"I know! It's completely insane!"
"Well is he good?"
"Maggie!"
"What it's a question?"
"I'm going upstairs, to my room, away from you." Lexie said. She passed Meredith in the hallway who she assumed was getting Zola.
"Hey Lexie!"
Hi Mer." Lexie said, barely making eye contact with her and heading straight to her room.
Meredith turned to Derek, "Are those the same clothes she wore yesterday?"
Meredith was hardly into the front door when Bailey almost plowed her over.
"Today's the day Dr Grey."
"I know Dr Bailey." Meredith said, handing over the carseat Zola was in to Derek and kissing his cheek. He brought Zola to daycare while Dr Bailey took Meredith to see Lonnie.
"Dr Grey! Today's the day." Lonnie said when she walked in.
"Today is the day."
Meredith turned to look at Bailey who was beaming.
"Dr Bailey, prep Lonnie for surgery, Today's the day." Meredith walked out of the room and met up with Jo in the Attending's lounge.
"Helm is still on for today right Wilson?"
Jo seemed to be lost in her thoughts and didn't respond to her.
"Wilson?"
Jo didn't respond.
That's when Meredith noticed the ring on her finger. Alex walked into the room and Meredith stared him down.
"Alexander Michael Karev, you proposed without telling me?"
"If it makes you feel better, I didn't know either." Jo said, taking a bite of the bagel in her hand and kissing Alex on the cheek.
"Well let me see it." Meredith said, taking Jo's hand and looking at the ring.
"I did good didn't I?" Alex said.
"It is very pretty Alex." Meredith said.
Derek walked in and saw Meredith admiring the ring.
"Damnit Karev now she's gonna want a ring." Derek said.
"You're basically already married." Alex said nudging him.
"You really want us to steal your thunder?" Meredith said.
Alex looked at Derek, "After the wedding, you hear me?"
Alex walked out of the lounge, grabbing his files and coffee.
"What did you ask earlier Mer?" Jo said.
"Is Helm still on for today?" Meredith asked.
"Yeah totally. She wouldn't reject you." Jo said with a wink.
"Why'd she say it like that?" Derek said, "Why did she say it like that?" He whispered.
"Helm has a thing for Mer. It's slightly obsessive, but nothing too creepy." Jo said.
"And on that note, I have patients. Wilson, come with me." Meredith said.
Before she walked out Derek said, "You better not be going to see Helm."
Meredith gave him a look and walked out.
Derek was paged right after Meredith left to the pit so he took a sip of his coffee and rushed down. He met Owen and he explained the situation.
"Car crash into a mall. Multiple injuries to the head and I believe a broken leg. This is the driver." Owen said. He saw Link, Callie, and Lexie waiting outside as he dressed in his trauma gown.
"Was the driver conscious before the crash?" Derek asked.
"I don't know yet." Owen said. The ambulance came and the back doors swung open. Owen was helping the paramedic with the patient and listening to what he was saying.
"35 year old male, trauma to the head and legs, not conscious."
"Do they know if he was conscious before impact?" Owen asked.
"I don't know."
April looked at Derek, "Bring him to trauma room 1, page cardio."
They got him to the room and assessed the damage.
"He has a fractured leg." Callie said.
"Get a head CT." Derek said to the nurse.
Maggie walked in and Owen said, "He drove a car into a mall, I think that he might of had a heart attack."
Maggie was still for a moment, but once she saw a reassuring look from Derek, she took a deep breath and began checking out his heart.
"I'll run a few tests to make sure I'm right, but he most definitely had a heart attack."
The nurse who went to schedule a head CT came back and wheeled the patient to get a CT.
Derek got his scans back and went to go check them out. Meredith came it with some of Lonnie's scans to check them out too.
"Hey there you." Meredith said. She kissed his cheek and but the scans up on the light board.
"Last minute scans before the big surgery?" Derek said.
"Yep. What do you have? Is it the car into mall patient?"
"It's the driver."
Meredith walked up to him and kissed him, "Well good luck today."
"You too." Derek said kissing her back. She took her scans and left. She was walking back to Lonnie's room when she felt uneasy all of a sudden. She dropped her stuff off at her office and went to the bathroom and threw up.
She called Lexie, "Hey can you meet me in the bathroom by my office?"
"Um Yeah what's up?"
"I threw up."
"I'll be right there." Lexie hung up and Meredith sat on the floor in the stall.
When she heard footsteps approaching and Lexie's voice, she unlatched the stall door and went on her knees to help her.
"I have ibuprofen, water, and a hairtie." Lexie said. She pulled back Meredith's hair and handed her the pills.
"Lex, I think I might be pregnant."
"Mer, does Derek know?"
"No. I was hoping you brought a test or if you could get one?"
"Mer I-"
"Please Lex."
"Fine. I'm going to go get you your test." Lexie said. She walked out of the bathroom and Meredith threw up again.
Derek had seen Lexie walk into the supply closet and come back out stuffing something into her pocket and heading to the bathroom. His thoughts immediately went to her being pregnant.
"Hey Sheps. How's the case going?" Mark asked him, leaning against the nurse's counter. He took a sip of his coffee.
"I think Lexie's pregnant."
Mark choked on his drink, "What?"
"I saw Lexie stuff a pregnancy test in her pocket and go to the bathroom."
Mark looked as if he was going to pass out, "I think I have patients to check on."
Derek grabbed his paperwork and headed to his patient.
"Well? Did you pee on it?" Lexie said.
Meredith walked out of the stall and sat the test on the counter and began to wash her hands, "What if I'm pregnant? We're still in the process of adopting Zola and I've only been back at work for a while."
"Mer, you're going to be fine. So what if it wasn't planned? You're baby will be absolutely adorable with Derek's genes and your genes."
"Lex. Not helping."
They stood in silence and watched the test.
When the two minutes passed, Meredith reached for the test and looked at Lexie.
"Ok on the count of three. 1..."
"2..."
"3..."
Meredith looked down at the test. 2 lines.
It's been a while but finally I finished Chapter 20. This is only the beginning, so be ready.
