It's been almost a week since I arrived at Dimitri's childhood home and things seemed to have calmed down a little after Abe's visit. Sonya has started to warm up a bit from the cold shoulder she had given to me the couple days following the comment she made to me. She even greeted me in the kitchen when we all sat down for breakfast this morning. It's funny, if we had met under different circumstances and if she wasn't the sister to the love of my life, then she would have been on my list of people to mouth off to in a given situation. But I'm trying to be respectful to Dimitri and not tell her to stick it where the sun don't shine.
Right now, Dimitri and I were sitting out in the back yard on the steps that lead to the yeard. A light blanket was draped over me. I needed the fresh air from being cooped up in the house the past few days. I lay my head on Dimitri's shoulder and he wraps an arm around me. The weather was nice out. It was about 20°C. Paul was playing with a ball in front of us. I could not help but wonder if our own little one would be able to play outside like this. He looked so happy kicking the ball around.
Dimitri turned his head to me and kissed my forehead. "How are you feeling?" He asked.
"I'm feeling a lot better being out of the house. I wish you would let me our more often."
"It's just a precaution for now. You'll have the next ultra sound soon and we will be able to see if anything had changed. I looked up at him with a newfound excitement.
"That's when we find out that it's a girl right?" I asked.
"How are you so sure that it is a girl?" He questioned. I have not told anyone about the dream I've been having. The one where I see my beautiful daughter. I can't for sure explain to myself why I believe these dreams to be real or not. When I have them, they don't feel like dreams. When I am in them I can feel the wind on my face, the sweat on my forehead as I run through the chaos of Strigoi, dhampire, and Moroi around me. I can smell the smoke in the air that burn my eyes. The dreams have to mean something so I believe them. But I won't tell Dimitri about them... At least not yet.
"I just have a feeling."
"Okay, does this feeling have a name for her?" He asked.
"Well..." The sound of the back door creaking open cut me off. The door opened to reveal someone I was not expecting to see.
"Dimka, I was looking... Oh." She stopped dead in her tracks as her gaze made it's way to us. "Rose? What are you doing here?" She looked very confused but there was something else there too that I was not able to put a pin on.
"Tasha, what are you doing here?" Dimitri asked her, standing up from the steps. I was too shocked to move. I wasn't expecting to see anyone outside of Dimitri's family here.
"I came to visit you. You seemed like you were having a hard time dealing with what happened to Yeva and I wanted to check in on you as soon as I could... What is Rose doing here?" She asked again, looking my way.
"I, I..." My words were cut off again.
"You should have told me you were planning on coming." Dimitri told her.
"I knew If I did that you would just tell me not to. I can see why. Are you going to answer my question? Why is Rose here and not at Court?" Well, it's going to come out sooner or later. I slowly lifted myself up from the steps, lowering the blanket from my lap. Her eyes fell on my baby bump and widened. I was still only 4 months along and so it wasn't a huge belly but it was still enough that it was obvious that I was expecting.
"Rose, you're pregnant?" She asked in disbelief as I nodded yes.
"Tasha, maybe we should go inside and talk." Dimitri said as he looked back at Paul who had stopped playing now and was watching us all but Tasha didn't seem to notice.
"I don't want to go inside, I want you to tell me now." She crossed her arms, "What were the two of you doing before I interrupted?" She was starting to sound on edge now.
"We were talking about baby names." I blurted out. She looked at me still confused but before she could say anything, Dimitri continued.
"Rose and I are together. The baby is mine." Tasha's face went from shocked to confused and then angry.
"So my offer wasn't good enough for you? You think playing house with another person's baby is better than having your own with me?"
"As impossible as it sounds, Tasha, Rose is carrying my biological child. It's complicated but true." Dimitri was talking calmly which was the opposite of what I felt. I was getting annoyed about having to explain to everyone that Dimitri is the father. I'm starting to think that I should be on one of those late night TV shows that hand out DNA results left and right. I can picture it now, 'Dimitri, you ARE the father'!
"You slept with your student!"
And there it is.
"This is... How could you... But..." The wheels were turning in her head as Tasha processed what Dimitri had told her. "I knew it!" I looked up at her and could hear the anger rising in her voice. She knew?
"Tasha." Dimitri tried to calm her but it was too late.
"Don't 'Tasha' me! You slept with your student! How could you do that? How could you chose her over me! A child! How could you do this to me Dimitri. How could you have a baby with her instead of me? I knew something was going on between you two. It was quite obvious."
"Tasha, I didn't mean to hurt you like this. It's just that what you and I have is nothing more than friendship. I love Rose and that was always the case. I could not share your feelings. I'm sorry."
"Sorry? Oh Dimitri, mark my words, you will be." She spat out before storming off. I grabbed Dimitri's arm.
"What does she mean by that?" I asked him. Is she going to hurt us? Tasha had always been so nice but the person I just saw was nothing but bitter and aggressively angry.
"She's just upset. I'm sure she will cool off and then come to apologize to us." I didn't have a good feeling about any of this. I know that Dimitri trusts her and all but I'm starting to question that trust.
"Can we go back inside?" I asked, now feeling a bit sick.
"Yeah, sure." He nodded before turning to Paul who was staring at us in fear. I don't blame him. Tasha really looked scary for a minuet there. "Paul, you should wash up for supper. It should be done soon."
The three of us made our way inside and I sat down on the couch in the family room. Dimitri sat next to me and pulled me into his arms. "Hey, everything will be okay, alright?" I gave him a small smile but it still wasn't enough to convince me.
