There had been whispers of dragons since Khal Drogo and his son died, that his child bride Daenerys, had hatched them, but Lewyn had not believed them. Jyenessa and Khiara had stated their magic grew stronger, but he had shaken it off. He thought magic was for children or healing. He had never seen the feats many claimed to have done centuries ago. Still, according to the maesters an obsidian candle was lit. This was impossible, as that meant magic was coming back. The maesters held the same stance on magic he did, that magic was dangerous at the best of times. Even so, he had heard whispers of White Walkers coming back as well. Maybe the two events were connected. Maybe the return of Dragons meant they would be used as weapons against the Undead.
"Could an enemy that can raise the dead raise a dead dragon?" he thought. He was afraid of the answer. Serena had begun to receive letters from Jaehaerys. At first he would talk about the friends he made and how worried he was about Benjin. Lately he had been talking of magic and the living dead. Lewyn had only seen Jaehaerys once as a babe, but he and the others had heard stories of the Stark Bastard who grew up as if he was a trueborn.
Lewyn decided to visit Elia. He began to walk toward the Inn where Elia and her son were staying. A dragon was a hard thing to hide, especially in an inn. And Elia had two dragons. They had tried hiding the dragons in a barn, but they didn't like being separated from their people. Luckily they were still small enough to conceal in pockets and purses. Despite their small sizes, they were deceptively smart. Sunspear, Elia's dragon, managed to figure out how to use his small size and coloring to blend into his surroundings. Greensight, Aegon's dragon, was somewhat more open, yet always seemed to be thinking. They would always stare intently at strangers, as if deciding on whether they were trustworthy or not. They also were incredibly close to Aegon. Lewyn knocked on the door to Elia's room. She opened the door and he walked in.
"How are you?" he asked
"Very Well."
"And the dragons?"
"They are also doing well, despite their captivity."
Lewin and Elia looked at the dragons. Sunspear was stalking a mouse. Greensight wandered up to him and looked up exepectantly. Lewyn began to stroke his head.
"That's good to hear. Where's Samwell?"
"He's with the children we found posing as him and his sister."
Lewyn looked at her, a bit confused.
"Why did you take them prisoner? Isn't the punishment for that type of thing death?"
"Yes, but they were forced into it by the Spider. If we're punishing anyone, it would be him."
Lewyn understood. Killing children was frowned upon, no matter the crime.
"If there's anything you need, tell me."
"I will." she replied as he left.
After all these years he still felt guilty for not doing more to protect her and her children. Maybe if he had done more to convince Rhaegar to stay, or killed the Mad King before he burned the Starks alive, they would be happy. He couldn't understand either of them. Thousands died or had their lives ruined because of them. He thought of this as he walked home and fell asleep in his bed.
That night he dreamed of how he met Serena. Shortly after they established their village and after the war ended, a boat came in from Dorne, carrying a young man and a girl. They were heavily dressed despite the heat and were keen on keeping their faces covered. The girl was holding a sleeping babe. The man was a little older than his sister, about two years older than Jynessa herself, and both were curious about the village being built. The man seemed to recognize them, and he in turn had a familiar air about him.
"What village is this?" asked the man.
"Rhoyne's Cove m'lord." answered Lewyn
"I did not see it on any map of Essos."
"We are a relatively new village sir, we just finished building the last house a few days past. There are also plenty of villages not shown on maps of Essos" said Jynessa. The man paused, and after a few moments he finally asked what was on his mind.
"Not many Dornishmen in Essos are there?"
"What are you trying to ask sir?" asked Lewyn.
"Have you seen a Dornish woman recently, with a babe and a child, followed by a few knights?" asked the girl, impatiently.
"No, why are you asking?" Lewyn discreetly moved his hand to his sword as he asked this.
As if sensing their panic, they took off their cloaks. Jynessa and Lewyn recognized them instantly. The man had a long face, brown hair and dark grey eyes, as did his sister. Eddard and Lyanna Stark stood before them, proud yet sad.
"My sister needs somewhere safe to stay in order to avoid Robert." said Eddard.
"Why can't she stay in Winterfell?" asked Jynessa
"There are too many people who'd recognize her, and the Spider has spies everywhere."
"What makes you think Essos is any different? Varys was born and raised on this continent, and everyone knows Pentos is where his spy network got it's start."
"This is a relatively new village, and one not on the maps of Essos, you said it yourself."
Lewyn thought for a moment.
"If I may m'Lord, in all likelihood Varys already knows. The heir to the Stark household leaving on a ship to Essos with a woman and her babe is not something that goes unnoticed."
"People believe Lyanna is dead, and I have claimed the child as my bastard son, anyone who may or may not have seen me leave will assume I am hiding his mother somewhere Caitlyn cannot find her."
"Fair enough. We will keep her and her son safe."
"Just L- I mean Serena. If anyone asks I'll say she didn't want the child. I am in your debt."
Lewyn awoke alone. That had been the last time he had seen Eddard Stark in person alive. It was still dark out but he couldn't sleep. He got dressed and went outside. It was a beautiful night. As he walked, he remembered the dream Lyanna had a few months back. She had told him about it one morning. She dreamt she was in the Winterfell Crypts and had seen Eddard standing by an open grave. She was convinced that he was dead, and mourned for weeks, but Lewyn didn't believe it until Elia and Aegon arrived. From what little he knew of him, Eddard Stark seemed like a good man.
As he continued walking, he heard footsteps that weren't his own and whispering coming from around the inn. Lewyn grabbed his sword and headed toward it.
