Ear Infection
Hey, everyone. I hope you are having a good day. We are finally onto the Es. This first prompt was suggested by a guest. It's Evan- Ear Infection- during the series. I'm going to set this between Heritage and Promised Land. Enjoy.
"You guys need to hurry up. You're gonna be late for the bus." Adam ordered. Then he noticed that Evan was missing. "Ford, where's Evan?"
"He's still in bed. I tried to wake him, but he pushed me away." Ford answered. Adam sighed and went upstairs. He walked into Evan and Ford's room and saw Evan curled up in bed sleeping.
"Evan, come on. Time to get up. You'll be late." Adam stated as he shook Evan. Evan groaned and rolled over. Adam sat down on the edge of the bed and put his hand on Evan's forehead. "Great. You have a fever. Where does it hurt?"
"My ear. It feels like its full of water or something." Evan mumbled.
"Which ear?"
"My left."
"I'm gonna call Dr. Wolf. The last thing we need is for it to get worse. Is it hard to hear?"
"Yeah."
"Ok. Hannah will bring up your breakfast and I'll send a note with Ford saying that you're sick."
Adam left the room and went downstairs. He grabbed a piece of paper and pen and started writing.
"Ford, give this note to Evan's teacher. He has an ear infection." Adam stated.
"Yes, sir." Ford answered. Adam handed Ford the note.
"I'm gonna call Dr. Wolf. See if he can come over and check Evan's ear." Adam sighed.
"I'll make sure he eats his breakfast." Hannah answered.
"Thanks."
Hannah took a tray of food up to Evan while Adam called Dr. Wolf. When he was done, he looked at Brian and Crane.
"I'm gonna have to take Evan to see Dr. Wolf." Adam sighed.
"We'll take care of things here." Crane answered. Adam went upstairs and saw Evan eating his breakfast.
"I'm gonna have to take you to the clinic. Finish eating and then you'll have to get dressed." Adam explained. "How are you feeling?"
"Not too great." Evan replied. Then he rubbed his ear.
"Evan, stop scratching. You're just gonna make it worse." Hannah stated as she grabbed Evan's hand.
"Sorry." Evan mumbled.
"Finish eating. I'll pull out your clothes."
"What?"
"Finish eating. I'm gonna pull out your clothes."
"Ok."
Hannah stood up and grabbed Evan's clothes. Evan finished eating and Hannah took the dishes downstairs while Adam made sure Evan didn't collapse.
"Ready?" Adam asked.
"Ready as I'll ever be." Evan sighed.
"Ok."
They went to the jeep and drove to the clinic. When they arrived, they went inside and waited for a doctor. Evan started to scratch his ear and Adam sighed and pulled Evan's hand away.
"Stop. The infection will never heal if you keep that up." Adam stated.
"I'm trying." Evan answered.
"Try harder."
Eventually, they were able to see Dr. Wolf.
"Well, there's some swelling and it's red. You have a rash too." Dr. Wolf sighed as he looked into Evan's ear.
"What kind of ear infection is it?" Adam wondered.
"Outer ear infection. It could be from a foreign object getting in there or water in his ear. It's not too bad and it should heal by itself if he doesn't scratch it."
"Is there anything you can give him to help?"
"I could prescribe some eardrops, but he doesn't really need them. We caught it before it could get worse. I can stop by tomorrow and check on him."
"Ok."
Adam and Evan went home. When they arrived, Evan went upstairs to bed.
"It's an outer ear infection. It'll go away on its own if he stops scratching it. Dr. Wolf just wants him to rest for the day. It's not contagious." Adam explained.
"Good." Hannah answered.
"Dr. Wolf will be by tomorrow to check Evan's infection."
That afternoon, Daniel, Ford, and Guthrie arrived home.
"How's Evan?" Daniel wondered.
"He'll be fine. It's just an outer ear infection. It's not even contagious." Adam replied.
"Good."
Ford went upstairs and saw Evan reading.
"I have your homework, Evan." Ford said.
"What did you say?" Evan wondered.
"I have your homework."
"What? I can't hear you. Speak up."
"I have your homework!"
Adam ran in and looked at the two.
"What's going on here? I could hear that all the way outside." Adam questioned.
"Evan couldn't hear me." Ford answered. Adam looked at Evan who was trying hard not to laugh.
"Ford, looks can be deceiving. Evan might have an infection and he might have fluid in his ear, but he can still hear with his other ear."
Ford looked at Evan and threw his bookbag at Evan.
"That's not funny, Evan. DO something constructive and get your homework done." Ford ordered as he handed Evan his homework.
"But I'm too sick to do this." Evan lied.
"You have an ear infection, not the flu. Do it yourself."
Ford grabbed his bookbag and left the room. Adam looked at Evan and raised an eyebrow.
"Don't let this go to your head or else I'll put you to work." Adam warned.
"Yes, sir." Evan sassed.
"Don't call me sir."
Adam left the room and Evan did his homework.
The next day, Dr. Wolf came and checked Evan's ear.
"Another day or two and the worst should be over. He can go back to school on Monday." Dr. Wolf said.
"Good." Adam answered.
"I'd let him rest a little, but don't let him get lazy. If he starts causing trouble put him to work inside. Like helping Hannah fold the laundry. I'm sure she could use some help."
"She'd love it."
Dr. Wolf left and Adam looked at Evan. Hannah came in and looked at the two.
"Dr. Wolf says that in a day or two the worst should be over. He handed me a list of things that we can do to help get rid of the infection, but... he's at your disposal. Put him to work." Adam said.
"Well, I could use some help with the laundry and making dinner." Hannah sighed.
"Hey, I still have a fever." Evan exclaimed. "I'm still sick."
"A fever of 99.8 isn't much to be worried about. Besides, it'll keep you distracted so that you stop scratching your ear."
"Yes, ma'am. Man, what does it take to get a sick day?"
"A lot more than an ear infection." Adam stated. "You'll live."
A couple of days later, the worst was over and Evan had more energy and his ear was starting to feel better.
I used outer ear infection (or Swimmer's ear) because it's common for just about anyone where middle ear infections are a little less common in adults.
