The Supporters and the Opposition spent the first few minutes taking turns to talk about the main points that supported their arguments. Atsumu patiently waited till all of them were laid out neatly for everyone to prod, dissect and abuse for their own benefit.
*flashback to the weekend before the exams*
Atsumu sat on his study table, going through the major topics that they would mostly be tested on.
Poverty... Equality in society... Religion... Science for social issues. Food culture... General governance... Japanese governance... Mass media, Facts vs. Media Representation... Importance of Art in a Technologically Advanced Society.
It was already known that the debate would be happen within this set of topics. They all were broad topics, and knowing the breadth of these topics should be ample, along with some recent examples and case studies. A whole lot of them were already discussed in class, so that opened up a whole swarm of opportunities that Atsumu could dig through a little more and generate a few more points.
Strategically, with a plan in mind, Atsumu opened up the web browser on his laptop to his left, and opened his file of information on these topics to his right, with a pen in hand.
He had two more hours before he had to go over to Ren-chan's house for their study session, and in these couple of hours, he'd cover the whole breadth of points he would discuss within each topic.
That was the task on hand. And then, would the refinement begin along with the identification of nuances.
Let's do this!
*flashback ends*
He sat with his team, passing notes and points whenever they required, to support their own points, as well as shoot down the opponent's points.
So far, all the points made from both sides were building a rather sterile debate, but that was to be expected according to Atsumu.
His plan of action was a 5-Step Shoot-down of Ren-chan process, the first of which was already taking place: exhausting the points of discussion.
It was rather time-consuming, but watching Ren-chan become excited with the way the debate was then and again leaning towards her side, was fun to watch.
Little do you know Ren-chan~
The second step would be to pursue the line of discussion towards the whatabouteries. That would be when both sides would be expected to become livelier than now. He'd have to have Gin-kun and Akira-kun take over for this, as almost everyone on their side had spoken once, and stated their purpose. There were only a few more moves to make, before Atsumu would checkmate her.
Akira: What about the point where you suggested that Media should ALWAYS be controlled? That's a strong way to put it, and you seem to be very sure that such situations would ALWAYS occur where media would need to be controlled at all times.
Hina: The idea behind that statement was to stick to reality, Akira-san. The what-ifs have a place in fiction not reality.
Gin: Even when it's a matter of freedom of speech? Free media can often equate to unbiased opinion. What if the governments controlling media could brainwash their citizens?
Osamu: Those are extreme cases, Gin-kun, and are a rarity. But uncontrolled media could even lead disastrous results where information spread by media could threaten national security.
Atsumu smiled at the way his twin steadfastly held on to their previous slip-up when mentioning the word "never." He started counting the minutes before their team would be destroyed.
So far so good for them, as they had not noticed the trap he had laid out. He glanced at Gin-kun, who was already looking back at him, and gave him an imperceptible nod.
Time for the next step.
The third step, the quickest one, would be to hypothetically pull some grand notion out of no where, that would incite a more heated discussion, leading the opposition to believe that they could still save themselves.
Gin: But the question stated the word SHOULD (tilting his head towards the blackboard), which we can all agree with the fact that, that word falls in the realms of what-ifs and future possibilities. I believe it would be harsh to not consider those options.
He watched as Ren's neck stiffen at his statement, and she opened her mouth to rebut.
Ren: Of course, we have considered that option Ginjima-kun. But more often than not, most nations wouldn't let something like that happen, since we do have the World Security Council, the United Nations, working towards pro-humanitarian goals.
Time for the fourth step.
He breathed loudly enough for Gin to hear him, and on cue he said a few things in retaliation, distracting them from letting Atsumu give the indication for the fourth step.
The fourth step would be a quick one. Atsumu would have to hand it to the only person who can make the opponent feel a false sense of security as the discussion points would come under negotiation, right before the final blow.
He glanced at Suna to take over the reigns, and do what he must.
Suna: So you would still support that media needs to be controlled?
Ren: That's right.
The fifth, and the final step, when he knew Ren-chan would take over the reigns, like she did, and he would deliver his final statement, making the entire discussion stalemate.
Atsumu: Then we must disagree with you.
Ren: But that alone doesn't make you right.
She smirked at that.
Ahhh, naive little Ren-chan~~
He smirked back at her, and found a tiny bit of joy from watching her stiffen slightly, at his own show of confidence. She clearly thought she had the upper hand.
Atsumu: True, but what I'm about to say, will make us right.
Her smirk faltered even more.
Atsumu: While your team has stated quite a few fair points, your total disregard for the meaning of the "control" has pushed your view point towards the extreme ends. Hence, we still stand by our belief, that media should not controlled. However, in light of the way this discussion has proceeded, it can be regulated, and only to the extent where it protects both national security as well as freedom of speech of the citizens.
There!
What followed was a pin-drop silence, before they heard a lone pair of hands clapping, sitting right behind the teacher's desk.
How's that for being the smarter Miya, Ren-chan?
