She opened her eyes when she heard the gravel crunch behind her. She turned before she remembered Paul had been naked the last time she'd seen him.
"It's okay," he said sitting down, "I've got clothes on."
Adelaide turned and looked at him; she glanced up and down.
"So the legends are true." She said flatly.
He nodded.
"And who was that?" Adelaide jerked her head backwards.
Paul paused and sighed, "that was my father."
Adelaide nodded; they didn't talk for a bit. It started to mist, Paul glanced behind them and glowered at the house.
"Do you mind if we move?" he asked.
Adelaide shook her head and started to get up, "where do you want to go?"
"There's a nice trail near here we can talk there," Paul said.
"Okay."
They started walking and disappeared into the green of the forest.
"Paul, you never told me the story of the third wife."
"Adelaide..." Paul groaned.
"Why does your father keep bringing it up? Why didn't you tell me with the rest of the legends?" Adelaide demanded. She stopped walking.
Paul took a few steps forward and turned around. He ran a hand through his hair.
"Because it's not a happy story. It..." he paused.
"It's the legend of imprinting. It's... a legend of sacrifice. I didn't want to tell it to you, it..."
"What's imprinting?" Adelaide asked.
She crossed her arms.
"Imprinting is..." Paul paused.
He turned his head.
"It's finding your soulmate, it happens after we first transition to... you know wolves."
Paul turned his head again and looked into the woods.
"And what is it the first person you see afterwards?" Adelaide asked.
"No..."
"Would you look at me?" Adelaide said.
Paul had turned and was walking further down the path. Adelaide didn't want to be the whiny girl frustrated because she wasn't receiving attention, but this was rude. When Paul didn't answer her, she turned around and started walking away.
"Adelaide! Wait!" He yelled.
He launched himself at her. He transitioned into a wolf mid jump. He felt the bite on his back and howled. He plowed into Adelaide and they both hit the ground. He could hear a bone break, he wasn't sure if it was his or not. Adrenaline ran through his veins, he could see the others running towards them. He could hear Adelaide's ragged breathing from underneath him. She weakly pushed at his fur, trying to wiggle out from underneath him. Paul moved his paw to keep her down. He needed to protect her even if that meant smothering her. He could feel the finger nails and bites on his back. He was focusing on his thoughts as the pack came racing towards them.
