JPOV
I tapped my foot impatiently, sitting on my bed, looking at the blank screen in my phone. Today was my birthday and the pack had called me this morning, waking me up from my most peaceful sleep. It was already 12 in the noon but still no calls or texts, wishing me on my day, from the Cullens. Not like I bothered anyway, but how could they forget my birthday! It was enough that they feed me almost all the time and let me crash in their place. I should not expect them to call me on my birthday. But, Nessie? Why hasn't she called me yet?
Every birthday she and I would spend the whole day together. But, this year, nothing of that sort.
She texted me a usual good morning and I had texted her back.
Me: Wat r u up to 2dy?
Nothing. Plenty of homework to do, she'd replied.
Me: Wanna hang out?
Ness: Homework, Jake! Maybe we could do hw 2gtr?
My face fell. She didn't even remember that it was my birthday today. Nah. I'm good. Guess I'll see you later then.
Ness: Sure. Bye, sweetie. I love yu.
Me: Love ya too.
I'd tossed the phone angrily over my bed and punched the wall in disappointment. I was determined not to go the mansion today. Instead, I decided that I'd go to mother's grave, just like every year. I would go there whenever something worth saying happens in my life. I'd been there every birthday. I was there at Bella's wedding, crying to my mother about losing Bella. I'd been there when I first imprinted on Renesmee. I'd been there when I was made Alpha. I'd been there at Rachel's wedding.
I walked all the way to my mother's grave, slowly, cursing my fate. My legs, used to this path, led me to the grave which read 'Sarah Kenzie Black'. I left a bouquet of roses there and sat down beside her grave.
"Hi, Mumma. I guess I'm back again. I hope you are happy and well. Today is my birthday," I paused. "Thank you, Mumma," I said like she had just now wished me a very happy birthday. Yeah, I was that crazy. "Everything is fine. Dad is good. Rachel and Paul are happy together. Bec doesn't talk much, but she is happy too. The pack is doing great. They all wished me heartily. The Cullens didn't, though. I know you like them, I do too. But, isn't it too much to expect them to wish me on my birthday after all that they do for me. But, I am really heartbroken that Nessie didn't call me. That she did not even text me." I looked at the grave, my eyes welled up. I cursed myself for crying.
Nessie's voice echoed in my head. Oh, you're such a baby, Jakey.
I sat there for a while, said goodbye to my mother and made my way to Emily's. They hugged me and greeted me warmly.
"Jacob?" Emily called. "Where is Nessie?"
They blinked at me. "Apparently, she forgot that it is my birthday today," I said cheerfully to lighten up the situation and not want to look wanted in front of them.
"What?" they wondered in unison.
"Yeah. She texted me this morning. She has homework to do it seems. She asked me to come over- only if I wanted to. So, I said that it was fine."
"No, no. Oh, no!" Ina said with a frown. "Jake, I'll call her."
"No. don't!" I said.
"Oh, Jake! You know how hysterical she gets when it comes to homework and tests and exams. She must have genuinely forgot," Ina insisted and I shook my head.
"It's fine. Just drop it." They looked at me with pity and this was something that I didn't want to happen. But, Emily knowing me well enough, smiled cheerfully and asked me to come eat the tasty lunch she had prepared. "Thank you, Emily," I smiled and joined my pack for lunch.
I had to admit that spending my birthday with my boys was fun. We drank some beers on the beach, raced in our wolves and I took a good nap at Seth's place. Around 10, I went over to my house and found my Dad missing. I called him immediately.
Hello, son? What is the matter?
"Where are you, Dad? Are you okay?"
I'm at Charlie's watching a game.
"Why couldn't you just tell me and go? You had me worried."
Where else would this old man go other than Charlie's?
"Okay. Come home safe, alright?"
Sure, son. How was your day?
"Yeah, I had fun," –true- "I ate a wonderful lunch," –true- "It was great" –lie-.
Nice.
"Okay, Dad. Tell Charlie and Sue I said hi."
I will, son. Bye.
"Bye, Dad."
I made my way to the room but something tripped me- I didn't fall, though. I saw the floor and found small packages, wrapped up in gift sheets, lined all the way from the living room to my bedroom. A blue balloon was tied to each of the gift and a candle was lit near every package. It was now I realised that the lights in the house were put off.
I picked up my first gift and found a note attached to it.
Pick them all and do not open until I say so. Blow the candles as you pick the gifts. You have a surprise waiting for you.
Love, Your One and Only.
What? I blinked, but did as I was told. I picked all the gifts and blew every candle and finally the house went dark. I sat on my bed and held the note which was attached to the last gift.
Twenty five gifts 'coz, you are 25.
Happy birthday, love.
Renesmee?
My phone rang at the same second and I checked my caller id. Renesmee.
I couldn't let my fingers answer the call. I looked at the phone too stunned to do anything. She was definitely the only person who could get me frozen.
"Hello?" my voice was feeble.
Happy Birthday, Jacob. You may open your gifts now, she said and hung up before I could say anything.
Anyway, I did as she said. 25 gifts? Wow, that is something. I opened the first one and found a wallet. The second was a black t-shirt, third a sunglass, fourth a frame which had a picture of us together, fifth a sneakers. I lost count then. I opened the rest and found coupons to McDonalds, a watch, an iPhone 6S- just like hers, sweatpants- coz she knew I needed them the most, a white button down shirt (it had a note attached to it, which said, you look cute in them.), a new backpack, a huge box of Ferrero Rocher- my favourite chocolate, jean shorts, bottle openers, beer tins, another frame with a picture of my family together, another frame with a picture of my mother and myself, a mechanic kit- full of tools, oil and grease proof gloves, DVD of 300- my favourite movie, an iPod, a leather belt, a red Adidas jacket, perfume and a note.
Come home as soon as you read this. I can't wait to kiss you.
Love, Renesmee.
"Oh, my God, Nessie! You always take me back by surprise!" I exclaimed loudly. Can't wait to kiss me? "I am on my way," I mumbled to myself and rushed to the Rabbit, grabbing my keys on the way.
I drove as fast as I could to the main house. She said home. Where am I supposed to go? I didn't think twice but went to the cottage. The door was closed. I knocked but nobody came. I opened it myself and went inside. The lights were out but, I knew Nessie was there. Her sweet peachy smell engulfed me as she threw her hands around me and I wrapped my hands around her.
"Happy Birthday, Jacob!" she exclaimed happily and without allowing me to speak, pulled me into the most passionate kiss ever. I was still frozen, but kissed her back with all that I had in me. She broke the kiss and in the same time the lights went on. I could see her face, her beautiful, angelic face before me. Her chocolate brown eyes were dazzling in the dim, golden light of the cottage. She looked me with so much love which made me wonder if I deserved such an amazing person in my life.
"Well, I expect at least a thank you, if not for a 'Wow' or a 'Perfect'," she said, crossing her hand across her chest, the way she did when she was angry.
I chuckled softly. "Thank you, Nessie."
She beamed, her smile brighter than the sun. "Did you like the gifts, Jake?"
"I loved them. Super cool! Except for that belt, though," I laughed and she joined me.
"Okay, I know. That was stupid. To think of twenty five gifts, that is a hard job, buddy," she said and laughed.
"But, you did a pretty good job," I appreciated her and she nodded.
"Don't thank me yet," she said wiggling her eyebrows.
"What have you in store for me, Renesmee Cullen?" I asked and she smiled wickedly.
"You'll see." She took me by my arms and dragged me to her room. "Sit here. You will not come outside. It is my order."
I laughed. "Okay. Whatever you say, Madam."
She opened her bedroom's door and went outside. After a while, she was back and stood outside the door. "Jake, close your eyes. Okay? Please don't open your eyes. Okay? Please."
I couldn't stop laughing. "I won't open my eyes, Ness. Please come in." I closed my eyes and sat there just as she left me. I heard her come inside and close the door and smelled food.
"You can open your eyes, Jacob," she said and I opened my eyes to find her standing with- "Is that blueberry pie?" I asked her, my eyes wide with surprise. Mumma always used to prepare blueberry pies on my birthday. It was a routine, well, till my fifth birthday. She nodded excitedly and handed me the pie. "Nessie, how did you-," my throat hurt to speak.
She held a finger on my lips. "Shh, Jacob. Eat it. I know you will be starving." I ate the pie in silence, tears brimming at the corner of my eyes. She sat in her bed smiling at me and occasionally stroked my hair. After I was done with the pie, she asked me, "How was the pie, Jakey?"
"Delicious, Ness. I hadn't eaten blueberry pie since my fifth birthday," I said and smiled at her. "Thank you so much, Ness. My Mumma-,"
"I know, Jake," she interrupted me. "She always made blueberry pie on your birthday, right?" I nodded. "I also knew that you hadn't ate them since you were five. I didn't forget your birthday, Jake. I just wanted to make it special. And also, I wanted to be your last wish. You have no idea how much it hurt to pretend."
I chuckled. "You made me a walking corpse today."
Pouting, she reached over to kiss my cheek. "Oh, baby. I am so sorry."
"Don't apologise. This is the best birthday I have celebrated in my entire life." Pride overtook pity in her face. I eyed her suspiciously. "You are not done with your surprise, are you?" I asked her, raising my eyebrows. She burst out laughing and nodded.
"Come here," she said, motioning me to rest my head in her lap. Clearing her throat, she began singing as she stroked my hair gently with her soft warm hands.
Raindrops on roses
And whiskers on kittens
"No, no, no!" I said, with wide eyes. "How-,"
"SHHHH. Shut up. Don't interrupt me. Is that clear?" she shot me a mock stare.
Raindrops on roses
And whiskers on kittens, she began again.
Bright copper kettles and warm woolen mittens
Brown paper packages tied up with strings
These are a few of my favorite things
"Jeez! This is ridiculous," I said, covering my face with her hair that was now on me. She smiled, looking at me but continued anyway. I was thinking, just staring at her through the little gap between my fingers, as I watched her singing in her wonderful voice I can't believe this is the person I am in love with.
Cream-colored ponies and crisp apple strudels
Doorbells and sleigh bells
And schnitzel with noodles
Wild geese that fly with the moon on their wings
These are a few of my favorite things
Girls in white dresses with blue satin sashes
Snowflakes that stay on my nose and eyelashes
Silver-white winters that melt into springs
These are a few of my favorite things
When the dog bites
When the bee stings
When I'm feeling sad
I simply remember my favorite things
And then I don't feel so bad
She smiled her brilliant smile when she finished and I did not take the hair off my face. "Jake, did you enjoy it?" I could hear the happiness and eagerness in her voice. But, I did not take her hair off my face, for the fear of bursting into a puddle of tears filled me in. The waterworks had already begun, though. "Jake?" she whispered now. She took the hair off my face and I couldn't manage to see her face.
Three things happened together at the same time. I broke into tears. She hugged me to her chest. And I began rambling. "Every birthday Mumma used to make blueberry pies, tie blue balloons all around the house and celebrate. After eating I would say good night to my family and Mumma and I would go to my room and I would lay on her lap and she would sing me this song because it was our favourite. I would ask, "Mumma, will you do this for me even if I am a grown up like Dad?" and then she would say, "Yes, my sweet pea, you will always be my little boy" and I would smile so happily because it would have been a truly fantastic day and go to sleep laying in her lap. But, then, after she died, nobody made blueberry pies anymore, nobody tied blue balloons and nobody ever sang this song. All happiness in that house drifted away with her. And then, out of nowhere, I met you, you teeny tiny girl. You washed away the emptiness. But, I never thought I'd celebrate one more birthday like the ones I used to celebrate with my mother ever again. I miss her. I miss her so much."
All this time, Nessie was saying 'Shhhh, shhh, shhh' and 'It's okay", stroking my hair and rubbing soothing circles in my back. She left me as I was, allowing me to calm down. I felt the need to push back my tears. This girl had managed to make my birthday so special and it was not fair on my part to make her shirt wet with salt water. I wiped away my tears and made myself better.
"Thank you, Nessie. This was the best birthday ever. I am so grateful for you," I smiled at her and she blushed.
"You are welcome, Jacob."
"Oh, look at you blushing," I teased her to lighten up the mood.
"Rose is right. You are a mutt," she smiled smugly and smacked my ribs.
"She most definitely is," I said and pulled her into a kiss. She fell over me, making me lose my grip and fall on my back. "My God! Are you getting heavy?" I teased her.
She groaned. "Shut up and kiss me."
I laughed and kissed her, holding her by her waist in my hands and our legs were intertwined with one and other. Her hair fell on my body and tickled me but I wasn't letting go of her. She broke the kiss and looked at me. "Happy Birthday, Jake. I love you."
"I love you more, Ness."
I kissed her again with much passion that would have destroyed the world. But, I didn't care.
