As promised, upon their return, Heda announced a feast day in honour of Wanheda, it was set for ten days. It was to begin with a processional march through Polis, Heda would give a speech, each of the clan leaders would present Wanheda with a token emblematic of their tribe. Heda would declare events open and the clans would compete across various events; including horse racing, boating and fighting and Wanheda would present the winners of each division with a prize. The markets were to be opened well into the night, with music and street performers and fireworks at midnight.
On the eighth and ninth day after the announcement, clan leaders began pouring into the city. It was a never ending parade of Heda and Wanheda waiting on the steps, welcoming each contingent which could take an hour or more, going back upstairs to rest and wait for word of the next arrival. On the ninth day there was to be a Coalition banquet in honour of the newest members Skaikru, Kane was in attendance on behalf of the Chancellor and Clarke was in attendance as the Skaikru Ambassador only, not Wanheda.
By all accounts the Chancellor had been determined to attend in person but no one who had heard Lexa's warning about her never to look at or speak to Heda ever again would allow her to go. They had all become accustomed to the peace which came with being part of the Coalition and the trade supplies that came with it.
Clarke rather enjoyed the parade, Heda and Wanheda side by side on their majestic steeds, leather and metal polished fit to blind onlookers, people calling out to them as they passed through. It was a busy day and Wanheda was determined to attend every event, if people were kind enough to travel to Polis and participate in her honour, it was the least she could do to announce the names of contenders and to congratulate the winners and those less fortunate.
Clarke had a sneaky trick up her sleeve that she had not revealed to any one. At the last fight, Wanheda congratulated what everyone expected was the final champion but in a dramatic turn of events Wanheda took off her cape and asked the Champion if he would honour, grant her the opportunity to fight him herself for the title. He was surprised but agreed to her request - he had to really! He had been put on the spot in front of thousands of people and she was the person for whom all of these were happening in the first place.
Heda was shocked, taken completely by surprise, she knew Clarke was not a fighter and what was she thinking - this was not part of their plan? Clarke suddenly vaulted over the side of the pit and drew out her twin swords. She made a decorous bow before her opponent, who was drawing his bloody sword when she heard what she had expected to hear minutes earlier.
Heda stood up and called out "Wanheda, please allow me the honour of fighting in your name?" Wanheda looked around at the crowd who grasped a sense of the theatrical and began chanting "Heda! Heda! Heda!" Wanheda shrugged obviously aat her would be opponent, slid her blades back in their sheaths and invited Heda to join them in the pit.
Whilst Heda was shrugging off her matching cape and likewise vaulting over the side, Wanheda was loosening a blue ribbon from her braids, woven into her hair for this precise event. She presented Heda with a wicked smile as she fastened her ribbon to Heda's breast, kissed her cheek and whispered, "Come and collect your prize when you win, lover." Wanheda's almost opponent bowed gallantly at her retreat back and the crowd was cheering madly at the daring behaviour of Wanheda toward their Heda, it was thought very risque.
Heda won, of course she did and when she came before Wanheda she was presented with a perfect peach which she held up for all to see and then looking Wanheda right in the eye, she took a huge bight. The crowd erupted again, the rumours were confirmed, everybody presumed that Heda and Wanheda were romantically involved and now they knew it without doubt. Their nuptials were very near being announced to the Coalition clan leaders in any case, it was just something Wanheda thought would be amusing and she did like to keep Heda on her toes.
Titus lost his shit about Wanheda's inappropriate behaviour, she was putting Heda to shame he said, showing the world that Heda was her bitch, he said. Wrong choice of words, Titus, he should have known better, he did know better. It happened in the Throne room before Heda's generals, Anya and Indra were present and Clarke was there. Luckily none of the clan leaders had yet been allowed to enter, perhaps he would have held his tongue or modified his language if they had.
As soon as Clarke heard the word bitch she turned and left the room, silently and without being noticed. All eyes were on Titus and he raised his chin in defiance. Heda took a fortifying breath and and offered Titus a way out, she could take his head here and now or he could be banished forthwith. Titus defended himself, "I have been Fleimkepa to four Heda's before you Heda, I have earned the right -"
"You have earned nothing, Titus. It is only my generosity that affords you this choice and if you don't make it, I shall."
Titus bowed his head, defeated and said, "I will take banishment, Heda."
"Very well, thank you for your service. Guards take him."
Heda moved out onto the balcony for a moment, a moment, that's all she needed. "No one will ever again refer to the former Fleimkepa nor this incident," she said and all present bowed their heads in assent, it hardly needed saying. "Indra, please have Gaia come and see me at her earliest opportunity. Anya, would you please see to Wanheda, I have the clan leaders to attend to." Both women bowed their heads again and moved to follow their orders.
In the following days Heda worked closely with Gaia to bring her up to speed with her agenda and gave her the opportunity to withdraw if she felt her politics aligned more closely to her mentor Titus than to Heda's. Gaia assured Heda of her loyalty and it was only after meeting with both Aden and Clarke to gain their opinion, that Gaia was promoted to Fleimkepa, tasked primarily with well, keeping the flame, as well as training the Nightblood children a for now, preparing for the nuptials between Heda and Wanheda, which were still to be announced.
On that note, after the fiasco with Titus, the clan leaders took the seats more commonly employed by their Ambassadors in the throne room, Kane occupying the Skaikru seat. Heda thanked them all for coming to celebrate Wanheda's feast day, she hoped they had all enjoyed the festivities and now she had an important announcement. Heda and Wanheda were to be married, no one but Kane could pretend to be shocked, the rumours of their relationship had not been well concealed.
Most clan leaders chose to leave Polis more or less immediately to return again in time for the wedding ceremony, which pleased Lexa enormously, only Kane expressed a wish to meet with Heda before he too beat a hasty retreat. Heda granted his request, they walked from the throne to better enjoy a more informal discussion, Lexa had come to value Kane, he was level headed, easy to work with and treated others with kindness and respect.
Kane asked to meet with Clarke before he left but Lexa relayed the rather difficult interaction she had had earlied and explained that Clarke was rather upset and had wished to remain alone at this time. It was a guess on Lexa's part but she felt sure that it is what Clarke would wish, Kane had seen quite a bit of Clarke in the preceding days and was convinced of her happiness, so he didn't push it.
He asked Lexa what they intended to do in relation to Abby regarding the wedding and Lexa replied that Clarke was waiting to see what Abby's response to the news was before making any decisions. Lexa decided to take this opportunity to be quite candid with Kan.,
"Kane, I am satisfied with the relationship between the Coalition and Skaikru, also between you and myself. It is my personal desire that you succeed to the Chancellorship of Skaikru and we continue to work together as successfully as we have so far done. On a different note, Clarke and Abby could again relate to each other as mother and daughter, whatever that means for them."
"Of course I have no power in this and have no intention of getting further involved except for what I have now said to you. I leave Clarke to decide regarding the current Chancellor and her mother as far as the wedding. If a new Chancellor were to be elected, they would of course be welcome to represent Skaikru at the celebration." Kane understood and took his leave, he had a lot to think about before he reached Mount Weather.
