Chapter 21- The Hunt Begins
Jack walked out of the bathroom, carefully carrying his armor with him. He turned to see Veil was waiting on the edge of the bed.
As he carefully placed his armor next to the small couch, Veil stood up and asked, "Can you help me, Jack?"
Jack turned to her and asked, "Yeah, what do you need help with?"
He watched as Veil approached the bathroom, then she pointed at the shower against the wall and said, "I do not know how to use that, but I know they are used for cleaning. I haven't cleaned myself in a long while now."
Jack nodded and said, "Oh yeah, it's easy."
He walked into the bathroom with Veil behind him, then he gestured to the two knobs in the square space.
He grabbed one and said, "You want to turn the red knob for hot water, and the blue one for cold water. The further you turn it, the hotter or colder the water will get. You kinda stand outside while turning the knob, testing the water for a bit, until it gets to just the right temperature. You Sangheili like cold showers?"
Veil shook her head as she examined the knobs. She watched as he turned the red knob, then water began pouring out of the shower head, just as she thought it would.
Jack stepped back from the water and asked, "Do you Sangheili clean yourselves differently?"
Veil bobbed her head as she placed her hand under the water and said, "Somewhat. But this will work. Thank you."
Jack nodded, then stepped out of the bathroom and shut the door. He exhaled, a shiver running down his back. He then turned to the bed, letting out a yawn in the process. He had already showered back on his old ship before they left, so now he just needed to rest.
He kicked the boots off his feet, pulled his shirt off, and threw himself face first into the bed. He sank right into it and let out a loud sigh from how comfortable it was. He lifted his face from the pillow and rolled onto his back.
The soft sound of the shower was quick to lull Jack to sleep. He hadn't slept in a real bed for so long, and he prayed that the comfort would give him a peaceful sleep.
-Veil 'Harom's POV-
Veil carefully opened the door to the bathroom and peeked out into the room. It looked empty, until she stuck her head out the doorway and saw Jack lying in the bed. He seemed out cold, then Veil stepped out of the bathroom.
She stepped towards the bed, then inspected it. Despite what she told Jack, she found herself quite nervous as well. She was taught from a young age on how to handle a relationship, but this was the first time she'd have to use those lessons.
Veil shook her head, trying to clear her thoughts and calm herself. She was a Sangheili warrior, she fought countless foes and came out on top every time. She can handle sharing a bed with her new partner.
She turned towards the wall next to the door, trying to find some kind of way to turn the lights off. What she could find was a knob on the wall, which she slowly twisted. The lights dimmed, then she twisted it until there was barely any light.
She approached the opposite side of the bed, careful not to disturb Jack. She knew what she wanted to do once she was in, the problem was not waking him up. Though, as it appeared, he seemed to be a heavy sleeper.
As she placed her hand on the edge of the bed, she was surprised at how soft it was. She lifted the sheets and slipped herself onto the bed. The bed was just as comfortable as it looked. She turned her head to Jack, who's shirtless body was now mere inches from her.
Veil remembered the last time she saw his chest, back when they arrived on Sanghelios, though last time he was fully naked. As any soldier should be, his muscles were extremely refined, along with small scars dotting his chest and stomach.
Just like last time, she couldn't help but stare at him. He was very different from Sangheili males, but that didn't bother her a bit.
After staring at his body for a minute, she huffed and decided to make her move. Sleeping in the same bed was a start, but she wanted to hold him. She remembers all the times she felt him hold her, the warmth and comfort she felt. She wanted him to feel that as well.
Her hand slowly reached towards Jack's resting body. She froze for a second right before she touched his bare skin, then she almost squeezed her eyes shut and started to mvoe her arm under him.
Before she could even think, his body turned and his arm shot out and grabbed her by her side. She almost let out a wort of surprise, but suppressed it. She looked at his eyes to see he was still fast asleep.
Without even feeling it, she realized that his other arm had slid under her, and now she could feel his legs brushing against hers. Veil didn't expect Jack to be so aggressive in his sleep, though she wasn't going to stop it.
Once the shock had passed, Veil felt that warmth build again. The feeling of him wrapped around her, slowly moving himself closer to her, it was more comforting than the bed. She gently laid her arm over him, then laid her head down on the pillow. Her head laid right over his, and she could feel his head on her chin.
The coming mission would be dangerous, probably more dangerous than their mission on Sanghelios. Veil was well aware of that, and so was Jack, yet he was willing to go so that they could go to Earth. She was starting to rethink it, however. Not because of the troubles they might face on Earth, but from how risky this hunt would be. Them holding each other like this, was all she wanted, and they could do this on any planet.
At this point, though, it was too late to take it back. Veil was going to make sure nothing happened to Jack. He was an aggressive fighter, but there was a big difference between him running up to a Sangheili with a knife and him running at a demon with a knife. She would need to stick close to him to make sure once this is all over, she'd still have a reason to go to Earth in the first place.
Veil could feel her eyelids getting heavier as she continued thinking. She decided to push her thoughts aside, wanting to simply appreciate her current comfort. The embrace between the two was more important to her than her doubtful thoughts.
As she relaxed her mind, she could feel herself slipping into a deep sleep. Before she fell asleep, she could already tell it would be the best sleep she's had in a long time. She would usually have to lay for an hour or so before she could sleep, but tonight was very different.
Waking up almost happened instantaneously as Veil slowly opened her eyes to see the lights were now brighter. For a second, she thought Jack was the one who turned them on, but when she looked down, he was closely clinging to her.
Veil carefully pulled her arm back and softly ran her hand down his back. His only reaction was pulling himself closer to her body, but she knew they'd have to get up. She carefully ran her clawed finger along the side of his face, trying to find a sensitive spot.
As her claw ran up his face, she brushed it against his ear, causing his eyes to instantly open up. He was barely an inch away from her bust, and it took him a few seconds to realize it, but once he did, his face quickly turned red. The sight was quite amusing to Veil as she quietly snickered at it.
He pushed himself slightly away from her, but didn't fully let go of her. His red face turned upwards and looked at her as she raised her head to watch him.
In an embarrassed tone, he avoided her eyes and asked, "I didn't do this, did I?"
Veil nodded and said, "You grabbed me in your sleep as if we have been betrothed for years."
She felt as he slowly started pulling his arms back, then he said, "Sorry, I just…"
Veil chuckled and said, "Why are you apologizing? This is something I want, Jack. Unless you don't…"
He shook his head before she could finish and said, "No, it's not that I don't want this, I'm just nervous, is all."
Veil chuckled again as she stared at his still red face. If simply holding her in the same bed was enough to make him this red, she wondered if he'd pop if she was naked as well. Might be worth a test someday, but not anytime soon.
She watched as he turned his head, searching the walls, before he landed on a digital clock. The clock said it was 8 in the morning. Veil didn't know what time it was when they went to sleep, but she assumed it wasn't too long until they had to get ready for the mission.
Jack seemed to grunt, then he pulled his arms from her and said, "The Spartan said half a day, right? That means we only have an hour till mission time."
He rolled himself out of bed, and Veil watched him purposefully fall off the edge, hitting the ground with a soft thud. He shot up, then turned to look at her. Veil was laying on her side, using her arm to support her head as she watched him.
She watched as his face turned red again, making Veil look at herself. She wasn't doing anything too special, but she was glad to have continuous proof that her partner found her attractive.
Veil sat up in the bed and watched as Jack grabbed his shirt from the edge of the couch and pulled it over himself. His clothes seemed very thick, probably to help protect from debris and shrapnel. She wondered how uncomfortable it must've been for him to wear his pants to sleep, though he must be used to it, seeing as he slept quite soundly last night.
As she stood up, Jack was already strapping his armor on. Veil was about to grab her armor, but her attention turned to the knob near the door. She knew it controlled the light, but Jack obviously wasn't the one to turn it.
Out of curiosity, she opened the door and peeked out, only to be met by the Spartan, patiently waiting outside the door, his attention focused on a datapad in his hand.
Before Veil could pull back into the room, the Spartan turned to face her. The two stared at each other silently for a second, then Veil took a step out the doorway and gave him a nervous wave.
The Spartan nodded, then said, "Morning Veil. Good thing you two are up. I was hoping I wouldn't have to force you two up."
Veil tilted her head, then asked, "Were you the one who turned up the light?"
The Spartan nodded and said,"Yes. I was going to awake you two normally, but when I walked in, you two were… very comfortable. I decided to let the bright light wake you up."
Veil nodded and said, "Well, thanks, I guess. We'll be ready shortly."
The Spartan silently nodded, then turned back around and looked at his datapad. Veil stared at him for a second, then turned back into the room, the door shutting behind her. She looked to Jack, who was already almost done with his armor.
Veil walked over to her armor, then heard Jack ask, "You want help putting that on?"
Veil turned around and said, "I would gladly accept that help. Do you need any help? I can tell you are struggling so."
She watched Jack flip his helmet on, finishing his armor, then he chuckled and said, "Actually yes. Once I'm done with you, help me get this back pack on my back. I almost always pull a muscle reaching back there."
Veil lifted her front chest plate upwards, then watched as Jack grabbed the back one. As she placed the chest plate on her chest, she could hear the sound of the two plates attach together. Alone, it would've taken her a good minute or two to get the back plate on.
It didn't take long for them to finish getting her armor on, though she still lacked a helmet. As she thought about that, she could see Jack looked at her.
He turned towards the door and said, "Don't worry, I'm sure they have spare helmets on the ship."
Veil sighed and said, "I hope. A hit from plasma on the head could be non-lethal if I'm lucky, but bullets tend to penetrate heads immediately, right?"
Jack nodded and said, "Yup. Shot enough heads to know that."
The two left the room only to be met by the Spartan, who was no longer looking into a datapad. The Spartan turned to the two, staying silent for a few seconds.
Veil was about to ask something, then the Spartan said, "Let me show you to the Sangheili armory, Veil. I hope you'll find the weapon choices satisfactory."
Veil nodded and said, "I can work with anything."
The Spartan turned around and starte walking away, Veil and Jack staying close behind. As they walked, Veil noted how empty this ship was compared to Jack's old ship. She rarely saw another person.
Soon, they entered an armory. Veil peeked around it, seeing multiple crates and racks with neatly set up weaponry. She immediately gravitated towards the carbine, taking one off the racks and placing it on her back. After she grabbed extra ammo, she turned around to see Jack inspecting some Sangheili armor.
She approached him, then watched as he grabbed a helmet. He stared at it, then turned to her and asked, "What's up with this armor? It looks… weird."
Veil stared at the helmet, then she turned to the other armor and said, "I don't exactly know, but it is too large for me."
The rest of the armors were all assault class, so she only had one real option. She lifted an assault helmet up and put it on. Her HUD activated, then she turned to Jack. He was staring at the rest of the room, taking in the weaponry.
The Spartan tapped his foot and said, "We arrived over the planet ahead of schedule. We can move out as soon as you two are equipped. The regular armory is right down the hall."
The Spartan then turned around and disappeared from the doorway. Veil turned back to the weapons and grabbed two plasma grenades. She looked around, making sure she had all she needed, then turned to Jack and nodded.
He walked backwards out of the armory and said, "You might want to bring a spare helmet. Who knows what'll happen."
The two walked out of the armory, then saw the Spartan waiting outside the second one. He opened the door and said, "This might not be your field of expertise, Corporal, but I'm going to need you to be a sniper for some time."
Veil could hear Jack let out a groan, then the two followed the Spartan in. She watched the Spartan take a sniper rifle off a rack and hold it out to Jack. He swiped it out of the Spartan's hands and asked, "Why the fuck am I sniping? I don't really trust myself with this."
The Spartan turned towards the weapons and said, "Satellite pictures show a clear image of where Noble Six is. The Insurrectionist camp is in an abandoned construction site, which is built on a flat. Next to that flat is a long hill, which me and Veil will travel down to quietly infiltrate the camp. You will stay at the top and cover us."
Jack put the rifle on his back, then grabbed extra magazines and asked, "What if I see Six?"
The Spartan whipped around and said, "The target is wanted alive, got it? And preferably without intensive damage. You'll simply be covering us as we go for the target. Me and Veil will get as close to him as possible without alerting anyone, then try and nab him. You then shoot down the closest people while we backtrack and you run out of rounds, come down the hill and you two will cover me as I escape with Six."
Veil wasn't going to say it, but she didn't like the plan. The Spartan wanted her and Jack to split up, which was not on her agenda.
Jack spoke up and asked, "How do you plane on just snatching a fucking Six? He's a Spartan!"
The Spartan nodded and said, "Yes, but he doesn't have his armor. And with the two of us, I believe we can successfully contain him while you cover us. But if it does go South, he will run. So you'll have to ditch the rifle and join us."
Jack grabbed an assault rifle from a rack, then turned back to the Spartan and asked, "You know how many Innies there are?"
The Spartan shook his head and said, "The number is unclear. But we know they are more organized than usual. When Noble Six escaped me on Tribute, he had quite a bit of backup to slow me down, and his Pelican boarded a frigate. We've been unable to find the frigate since then, so the extent of these Insurrectionists isn't known."
Veil grunted and said, "I am afraid we're about to find out."
Jack nodded his head as he finished loading up, then said, "For the Insurrectionists to get Noble Six on their side, they must be feeling confident. What the hell happened to Six to turn him into an Innie?"
The Spartan shrugged his shoulders and said, "No one knows. Once we have him in custody, then we'll get some answers."
The Spartan grabbed himself a battle rifle and shotgun, then turned around to walk out. Veil watched as Jack's arm shot out and grabbed a hold of the Spartan's arm. The motion immediately made Veil tense. She knew the Spartan was an ally, but there was much about him she didn't know.
Luckily, the Spartan didn't seemed too bothered and simply turned around to face Jack. Jack let go and asked, "Do we get a map of the area? If you have pictures, I want to know what it looks like."
The Spartan sighed, then held out the datapad and said, "I was going to show you on the Pelican, but here. Look it over as much as you please."
Jack snatched the datapad, then lifted it up for him and Veil to both view. She leaned over his shoulder to see. The area was definitely once a construction zone, for what she couldn't tell. There seemed to be long metal tent-looking structures which held crates of supplies under them, and these were outlining the exterior of the area, and the middle seemed flattened and open, with only a partly constructed building surrounded by misplaced lumber stacks, bags of concrete, and more crated supplies.
She could immediately tell where the Spartan wanted to go. The hillside led sdirectly to a metal-tent that ran near the edge of the partly constructed building, which had crated lined on the side. If Noble six were to exit, they could get right next to the door unseen and grab him, though after that they'd have to pray Jack's aim was precise, which Veil was confident in. Though, if it went wrong, they did have some cover to use, though Jack would have to clear their backs up from enemies for them to properly return fire.
As the two looked at the picture, Veil heard a small gasp come from Jack. She was about to ask what was wrong, but Jack walked away from her and tapped the Spartan on the shoulder.
The Spartan turned, but before he could ask, Jack held out the datapad and said, "Do you see anything interesting in this picture?"
The Spartan leaned forward to look, then shook his head. Jack turned the datapad back, then seemed to use his fingers to zoom in. He then spun it around and showe dit again.
The Spartan stayed silent, then took a step back from surprise. Curious, Veil asked, "What did you find?"
Jack gumbled and said, "The Spartan here said Noble Six didn't have any armor. But guess what I found! A fucking Spartan helmet, sitting on one of the supply crates. When was this picture taken?"
The Spartan sighed and said, "A day ago. Now, we can't assume he has power armor. They might only have a helmet, which is useless without the rest of the armor."
Jack laughed and said, "Oh yeah, so we should forget about it and go with our original plan?"
The Spartan seemed annoyed at the moment, or at least that's what Veil could tell from his body language. The Spartan stepped towards Jack and said, "The likelihood that Insurrectionists were able to acquire power armor, of any kind, is non-existent. It simply must be a relique Six brought back from Reach. We stick to the plan, and if he does have power armor, we have a backup plan. You clear us an area to take cover, and we do this the hard-way, with a firefight."
Veil looke at the two, who were staring each other down at the moment. Veil was still surprised at how much Jack talked back to the Spartan, even though the Spartan is clearly his superior.
Jack huffed, then walked past the Spartan, out of the room, and said, "If something goes wrong, it's on you tin-man! Now walk us to the Pelican, please!"
The Spartan turned around and walked out, leading them out of the armory and through more halls. Veil was growing slightly nervous now with this revelation. She had grown some confidence when the Spartan said Noble Six would lack armor, but now, that question was yet to be answered. She didn't get too over-anxious though. Last night, she had already prepared herself to take on a fully equipped Spartan. She was still hopeful that it would go well, even with the flawed plan.
After a minute, they reached the hangar once more. Waiting by their Pelican was the pilot again. He seemed to be talking to a woman, who then patted him on the shoulder and walked off.
The pilot saluted as the Spartan walked past him and into the Pelican, though Jack stopped in front of the pilot. Jack gestured to the woman walking off and asked, "A friend?"
The pilot chuckled and said, "More like a mentor. This was her Pelican, during the war. She get's over-protective sometimes, but she picked the best to take care of her girl!"
Jack nodded, then walked in and sat down. Veil stood next to him and watched the Pilot jog off into the cockpit. Veil watched as the Pelican's door shut behind her, then she turned back to Jack. He seemed to be in a trance, constantly running his hands over his sniper rifle, checking it's mechanisms over and over again.
The sight was almost amusing, making her let out a small chuckle. She lowered her head and asked, "Do you not trust your weapon to work properly?"
Jack, with no amusement in his voice, nodded and said, "I will never fucking trust these rifles to work. I swear to God I won't let it happen again."
After his statement, his checking seemed to get more aggressive, as he continually went over his weapon. Veil sighed as she watched, remembering what he told her. The last time he had to use a sniper rifle, it didn't end well. She knew he simply didn't want a similar fate to meet her.
Veil turned to a small munitions rack in the pelican, then grabbed a pistol from it. She turned back to Jack, then held it out and said, "So why not a backup for your backup? Just to be sure."
Jack stopped for a moment and looked at her, then nodded his head and said, "Yeah, that's probably a good idea. Thanks."
He took the pistol from her and placed it on his thigh, then looked up to her and said, "Just… don't get yourself in too much trouble. I wanted to stay by your side this whole time, but it appears the mission requires something different."
Veil knelt down in front of him and said, "Jack, I trust this will go well. Don't dwell on your doubts. In the end, we will both be able to go to a new home."
Jack looked up at her, then chuckled and said, "I'll do my best, ma'am."
Veil gave him a smile with her mandibles, then watched as he turned back to his sniper rifle, though now his movements were slower and calmer. She shifted her gaze back to the Spartan, who wasn't paying them any attention. He seemed deep in his own thoughts.
The Pelican rumbled slightly as it exited the hangar of the Frigate, then it quickly made it's way down to the planet's surface.
Veil carefully stood herself up and looked out the small viewing port in the Pelican's back entrance. She could see the Frigate they were on shrinking at a very quick rate.
As she looked, she heard Jack speak behind her and ask, "So, how are we gonna sneak up on them when they will probably see the Pelican land nearby. Actually, they probably noticed the military Frigate in orbit first."
The Spartan huffed and said, "They do not have the technology to see the Frigate, and this Pelican's digital call-sign was changed to match a civilian vessel. So even if they do catch us on radar, they'll only think we're heading into the city."
Veil turned to see Jack nod at the reply, then he returned to his rifle. She knew he was paranoid beyond belief. He's never had to fight a demon, but she hoped her words would continue to help him through the mission.
After about an hour of flight, the pilot spoke into their coms and said, "Alrighty, we're over the drop zone! Happy hunting!"
Veil watched as Jack stood up, sniper rifle in hand, then the Spartan stepped behind him. The back entrance opened up, and Veil jumped out of it and into a green forest. She heard the sound of bushes rustling as Jack landed next to her. They were followed by the Spartan, who landed directly behind them.
After a second, the Pelican shut the door and flew off. The Spartan gazed around for a second, then pointed two fingers in a direction and said, "The camp is 2 clicks south. Let's move."
Veil and Jack nodded, then followed the Spartan as he moved through the brush in a light jog. As they went, Jack softly nudged Veil and said, "Might want to hold on to your carbine, we don't know if the Innies will have patrols or not."
Veil nodded, and as she took her carbine from her back, she suddenly realized something. In order to complete this mission, she was going to have to kill humans. It was only now that this dawned on her. She hadn't killed a human in over two years, and she didn't know how Jack would react.
She turned to Jack and said, "Jack, I just realized that I'm going to have to kill more of your kind in this mission. I don't know how I feel about that."
Jack let out a sigh, then turned to her and said, "Let me explain this really quick. I don't care if you kill these guys. Insurrectionists are peace-hating freaks. As soon as the Human-Covenant War ended, they wouldn't let the UNSC have a single second of peace, and immediately started attacking us. They won't let us or civilians live peacefully, and are a constant threat to all our colonies."
Veil nodded, having a better grasp on them. Though, she doubts the reason was as simple as "they hate peace".
She turned back to Jack and asked, "Why do they attack the UNSC? They must have a reason."
Before Jack could speak, the Spartan spoke up and said, "They think the UNSC is a tyrannical government. They believe that they fight for their colonies to gain independence, as they think the UNSC ignores and doesn't value outer colonies. They believed the UNSC abandoned them at the beginning of the war, but they are too ignorant to understand how spread out the UNSC fleet was, and how powerful the Covenant was. They're lucky the Covenant attacked, or else us Spartans would've done what we were built to do, hunt them down and eliminate them."
Veil was intrigued by the Spartan's answer. The demon's were built to combat these Insurrectionist's originally? If that's the case, then humanity was very lucky that the Insurrectionists existed in the first place, or else humanity's greatest advantage wouldn't have existed. But now, these demons were focusing their attention back on the Insurrectionists. She wondered how hard they would be to fight.
As the krept through the forest, the Spartan stopped moving and crouched behind a tree, gazing in front of them. Veil and Jack both stopped behind him, peeking over him to try to see what he was gazing at.
Through the brush, Veil could make out two forms slowly walking through the forest. Both were carrying assault rifles, so Veil assumed they were hostiles.
The Spartan turned to Jack and asked, "Would you like the honor?"
She watched as Jack nodded, then he turned to her and held out his sniper rifle. She held it for him, then watched him unsheathe his knife and slowly leave the two, approaching the two hostiles.
Jack was careful to keep his footsteps quiet as he approached the two. Soon enough he was directly behind them. Jack tapped the one on the left on their right shoulder, making them turn their head to look. As soon as his head was turned, Jack lunged his knife forward, sending it straight into his throat. The second Innie turned to see and let out a gasp of surprise, but before he could shoot, Jack pulled his knife out and cut across his neck, causing blood to start gushing out.
Both of the men dropped their rifles and gripped their necks, falling to the ground and letting out gurgles of pain until they finally bled out.
Jack sighed as he wiped the blood off his knife with his sleeve and sheathed it. Both Veil and the Spartan approached him and looked at the bodies.
Jack pointed at them and said, "Don't worry yourself about killing these assholes, Veil. They deserve it, trust me."
Veil nodded, still looking at the bodies. They were very different from the human soldiers she saw on the ship. Their armor was minimal, and their rifles looked older and more worn than Jack's.
She watched as Jack knelt over the bodies, then he grabbed something from them. He raised it to the Spartan and said, "A radio. Should we take it in case?"
The Spartan nodded and said, "Keep it on you. It will help us if things go South."
Jack nodded as he clipped the radio to his waist, then he turned to Veil. She handed him his rifle back, then he said, "Thanks for holding that. I hope you don't think less of me for that."
Veil shook her head as they continued forward and said, "The way you eliminate your foes will never make me think less of my partner."
She watched as his head stayed locked to her, then he looked forward and lowered his head. Veil could sense the small smile on his face, which made her glad.
After a few more minutes of walking, they approached the end of the forest. As they reached it, Veil could see the camp. It was exactly like what she saw on the datapad. They were at the top of a steep hill that looked right over the camp.
She could see a few men walking around in the camp, though they looked unarmed from the distance she was looking. She turned to see Jack lift the snipe rifle and look down the scope.
He looked at the two and said, "I count about six visible men. They all have magnums, but that's it. Might be more in the building."
The Spartan stepped next to him and said, "Any sign of the target?"
Jack looked down the scope, then said, "I think I saw an Innie carrying the helmet into the building. If we know he's here, he's in there."
The Spartan nodded, then turned to Veil and said, "Use your active camo and let's move."
Veil nodded as she watched The Spartan slowly start making his way down the hill. Before she could follow, Jack softly grabbed her hand and said, "Be careful. And remember, I got you covered."
She nodded to him and said, "I won't be long."
She watched as Jack laid himself down on the ground and set up the tripod on the rifle, then she went invisible and followed slowly behind the Spartan.
The two slid down the hill, entering one of the large metal tents. The Spartan waved her ahead of him, so she slowly crept past him. She led the two of them between metal crates, making their way to the unfinished building.
Soon, they reached the end of the tent, which led to the wall of the building. Veil crept up the wall, then took cover behind a crate directly next to the building's entrance. She turned to watch the Spartan take cover by the crate behind her.
Veil turned to the left to look out into the camp. Luckily, no one noticed the two make their way next to the entrance, and their current positions were hidden from their sight.
After a minute of waiting, Jack spoke over the coms and said, "I see movement by the door. Be ready."
Veil let out a breath of nervousness as she prepared herself to grapple with a demon. She heard footsteps by the door, but before she could see anyone exit, she heard Jack whisper over the coms, "Fuck."
Right after that, a fully armored and armed Spartan exited the building, scanning the entirety of the camp. Veil froze as she stared at the Spartan. There was no way she could grapple with him now.
Before she could think of what to do, the Spartan turned and looked directly at her. He then lowered his assault rifle and leveled it directly at her face. Before she could do anything, a loud crack went off, and the camp erupted into chaos.
It is I, back again, with another chapter. Hope you enjoyed this one, and I'm quite surprised I got it out within two weeks. Now that I say that, my next chapter will take four weeks, huh? Anyway, I'm so happy to know you guys actually enjoy this. Since school has started, my life took a dive bomb in quality honestly. Especially with how the school and teachers are handling the online school, I'd prefer risking getting Corona just to go back to actual school. Writing this story and reading others on this website have become the highlights of my days honestly, seeing as everything else is either school or work.
I honestly just wanted to thank you people for reading this. There's a chance my chapters might get shorter than usual, I try to at the very least get them above 4,000 words, but that's just a small thing to me. And I promise I will continue to do my best with my work here! Have a good day or night!
