Sorry for the wait. Although I am back a little sooner than I expected. Apparently being able to see your reviews really does inspire me to work quicker. Thank you for all the kind words and I just love seeing your predictions on who pushed Maggie.
How will Maggie react to finding out that Kate pushed her?
Was it really Kate that pushed her?
Guess you'll have to Read & See.

Maggie's eyes flutter open and her hand immediately goes to her stomach. She doesn't know what it is, or if it's even possible but she feels empty. She knew before she even opened her eyes. Her baby is gone. Her baby is gone and there's no getting it back. She slowly turns her head and when blue meets brown Jackson reaches up and strokes her cheek.
"Say it." She croaks out.
Jackson looks away and rises to get Maggie some water but before he can walk away she grabs his wrist.
"Jackson. Say it."
Jackson sits on the side of the bed and grabs Maggie's hand into his. He takes a deep breath and looks her in the eye. "We lost the baby." he whispers.
There's a moment of silence and the next thing heard is Maggie's guttural cries. Nurses run to the door but Jackson holds his hand up to stop them while he gathers Maggie into his arms.
"I'm sorry. I'm so sorry." He repeats over and over again as he holds her tighter and rubs her back.
They sat like that for nearly an hour before Maggie had stopped crying long enough to pull away and speak to him. As glad as he was that she was calming down he was nervous as hell. He knew what was coming next. She had questions and he owed her the answers. Answers that would probably destroy them. This was on him. They lost their baby and it was his fault.
"Jackson…. what happened? Last thing I remember I was at the top of the stairs sending you text. Oh God!" she begins to get hysterical "Did I trip? It was so irresponsible! I knew that I was supposed to be careful but I was so excited to tell y-"
"Maggie. MAGGIE. Please…. stop" He says with tears in his eyes as he begins to pace.
"But Jackson…"
"YOU DIDN'T DO THIS! I DID!" he shouts as he pounds on his chest.
"Jackson" she reaches her hand out to him "Jackson, come here."
"Maggie… you didn't trip" he whispers.
She tilts her head to the side looking at him questioningly and then everything comes back to her and she looks horrified, "Some-someone pushed me, right? I remember feeling a hand on my back."
"Yes."
"What? Why? Who? How? Why?"
"Amelia and Link found you laying at the bottom of the steps."
"Do you know who did this? Who Jackson? Who would push me? I didn't do anything to anyone. My baby" she pauses "our baby, didn't do anything to anyone." She looks over at him and notices something she can't quite read behind the sadness in his eyes. Was it… guilt? "Who Jackson?"
"Kate."
Her eyes frantically search his, "Kate? Kate Shepherd?"
He walks over and sits by her side, "Yeah."
She's silent for a minute as she lets it sink in. When Jackson reaches for her hand she jerks it away, "Kate who's only in our lives beca-"
He reaches for her again "Maggie please."
She snatches her hand away "DON'T cut me off again." She closes her eyes and takes a deep breath before she begins again "Kate, who's only in our lives because you couldn't even go on your stupid God quest without getting entangled with another woman? Is that the Kate we're talking about?" when he just looks at her with tears streaming down his face she continues "NOW YOU SPEAK! ANSWER THE QUESTION!"
"Yes." He whimpers.
"So MY baby is dead because of you."
"I'm sorry. I'm so so sorry." She tenses when lays his head across her stomach and cries "I'm sorry baby. I'm so so sorry. Please"
"Just go Jackson."
He raises his head and looks her in the eye "Maggie please, I love you. I'm sorry."
He could swear he saw her eyes go black and then, "Well I don't love you. Not anymore."
Jackson shakes his head, "Baby, you don't mean that."
"YOU KILLED MY BABY! OF COURSE I MEAN IT!" she's crying hysterically and throwing her pillows at him "GET OUT! I HATE YOU! GET OUT!"
Jackson slowly backs out the room sobbing, repeating his apologies over and over again.
When Jackson is finally outside the room he sees Amelia and Meredith running towards the room.
"What the hell happened?" Amelia asks panicked, but Jackson is too distraught to pay her any mind. He takes one last look at Maggie through the window and leaves the hospital for the first time in 3 days. He needed a minute to regroup, get some fresh air, and maybe go see Harriet for a while. She'd been with Richard and his mother the past few days. He also needed to give Maggie some time to herself. Hopefully after a few hours alone she would be ready to see him when he went back later tonight.
Amelia and Meredith run into the room and find Maggie curled up in a ball on the bed, crying hysterically. They both approach slowly and Meredith lays a hand on Maggie's back while Amelia hops onto the bed with her. They let her cry for a minute but when it doesn't seem like she's getting any calmer Amelia speaks.
"Mags. I know it hurts but you know how this works. If you don't calm down a bit we're gonna have to sedate you for health purposes." She whispers to her.
"I… want my… mom." She cries as Amelia holds her as tight as she can.
"I know Maggie. I know." Meredith says rubbing her back.
Her cries begin to slow and she slowly sits up in the bed. Amelia stands and begins to give her a physical exam to make sure everything is okay, while Meredith holds her hand.
Her voice is scratchy when she speaks again, "I was so excited. Too excited I guess."
"No such thing." Meredith says.
Maggie looks over at Amelia and notices that she's gone silent and she isn't looking at her. She's actually just staring at the tablet in front her even though Maggie is sure there's nothing she needs to see on the screen at the moment. She's also standing pretty far back. It doesn't take genius to know what this was about. She was pulling back now that Maggie was calmer and more aware of things because she thought Maggie would be upset with her.
"Hey you." Maggie whispers as she reaches her hand out for Amelia. Amelia is hesitant but after a minute she grabs onto Maggie's hand and Maggie speaks again, "I love you, you know?"
Amelia immediately hugs Maggie and cries into her shoulder, "I love you too. I'm sorry. So sorry."
Maggie grabs Amelia's face between her hands, "You didn't do this. You're not responsible and I don't blame you. Okay? From what I hear, you found me. So really, you saved me."
Amelia nods and chuckles an she wipes away her tears, "Well when you put it that way."
Maggie then turns her head towards Meredith, "she's not who you should be mad at Mer."
Meredith looks shocked for a second and then rolls her eyes, "I know that. I'm not." When Maggie just raises her brow Meredith sighs, "Okay so I'm a little mad. You're my baby sister. I get to be mad if someone hurts you."
"You do, but you get to be mad at who hurt me. It was her sister. Not her. You can't blame her for who she happens to be related too."
Meredith looks at her defiantly "By that logic, you can't blame Jackson. He didn't push you."
"Don't Meredith."
"Hey, I'm not saying don't blame him, because I certainly do. I'm just saying the reason you're telling me not to blame Amelia relates to Jackson as well."
"Not really. Kate didn't throw me down the steps because Amelia calls me her sister. She did however throw me down the steps because Jackson calls me his girlfriend."
"Touché. Look, we'll be fine. Amelia and I, this is what we do. That's not what's important right now. How are you feeling?"
"My arm is killing me, I'm assuming it's broken. My ankle hurts. My head is killing me. What exactly were my injuries?"
Amelia gets up to administer something for her pain while Meredith response to her question, "Broken arm, sprained ankle, it's a partial tear. Laceration on your forehead. And you had a small brain bleed, which is why you were in a medically induced coma for the last 2 days."
She looks over at Amelia, "Everything okay with the bleed?"
"Absolutely. Good as new." Amelia smiles.
There's a brief silence before Maggie speaks again, "Did my baby stand a chance?"
Amelia grips her hand with tear filled eyes, "By the time we found you…. there was just too much blood Mags."
Maggie nods her head as tears roll down her cheeks. "When does it stop?"
Meredith gently wipes her tears with a kleenex, "It doesn't stop, but it does lessen. I promise."
She nods, "Would you guys mind giving me some time alone?"
"No problem. Call if you need us okay?" Meredith says.
Amelia places a kiss on her forehead and they both walk towards the door.
"Hey." Maggie says, "Can you guys check on Jackson? Make sure he's okay. He shouldn't be alone right now. He lost something too."
"You two should be together Maggie" Amelia says.
"I know. And we will… eventually. But I just can't look at him right now. I can't. Logically I know he didn't do this, but my empty womb needs time to catch up. But please, check in with him. I know you blame him, but for me, make sure he knows he isn't alone. Call Catherine if it's too much for either of you."
"Whatever you want."
Ever since she'd woken up 2 days ago it seemed like Maggie's room had a revolving door. Everyone came and went. The annoying part? All her visitors were doctors who apparently didn't trust one another with her health so they all did checks of their own. She was irritated but she put up with it because as annoying as they were, she couldn't help but feel anything but extremely loved.
She was sitting alone picking at her blanket lost in her thoughts and drowning in heartbreak when there was a knock on her door. She looked up to see Catherine walking in with a huge flower arrangement.
"Hey baby. How you feeling?"
Maggie smiles, "I'm okay. You didn't have to bring those."
"Oh, these are from Jackson. He said he won't come until you say so but he wanted you to know he's thinking of you. Hence the flowers. Some company okay?"
"Only if you promise not to give me a physical. I swear I've had like 20." She rolls her eyes.
"I promise." She says as she places the floral arrangement on the side table.
"Does he think I don't know he's been lurking around my room the past couple of nights?"
Catherine chuckles, "I have no idea. He's trying to give you your space Maggie but he loves you and wants to see that you're okay with his own eyes. He's just tryna find middle ground I guess."
"It's okay. I'm not mad. How's Harriet?"
"Worried about you. She wants to come see you but we explained." Catherine pulls a piece of paper out of her purse, "She made you this."
"I just don't want her to see me like this. I look like the living dead, I'll scare her. Maybe in another day or 2."
Maggie looks down at the picture and tears up. Harriet drew what she's sure is supposed to be the new house, their forever home, and standing out front were Maggie, Jackson, and Harriet. Maggie continues looking at the picture and suddenly she pauses.
"Is that… is that a baby in a cloud?" she asks and then she's weeping all over again.
Catherine stands and gathers her in her arms, "It's okay. Let it out."
When Maggie calms a bit Catherine pulls back and looks her in the eye, "I know this is tough and it's gonna be a while before you're okay but I want you to know I'm here for you Maggie. Your mom can't be here and I know that makes it hurt even more, but I like to think we're pretty close, you and I, and you need a mom right now. I can be that if you want."
Maggie nods her head and cries "I've never missed or needed her more. I don't know how I'm supposed to go forward now. I know I'd only known about the baby for a few days, but I pictured this whole life for us and now it's just gone. And it wasn't a medical complication that I could make sense of. It wasn't some random accident. Someone took it away."
"And trust that we're going to take care of that someone. No one messes with an Avery."
Maggie laughs as she wipes away her tears, "I'm not an Avery."
"Maybe not yet, but either way that baby was. We'll handle it, so I don't want you to even concern yourself with that. Okay?"
"Okay."
"Now that that's out the way. You go forward by letting yourself feel it. The pain, the anger, everything. You feel it, and when you need to fall apart, you fall apart. We're all here to pick you up. Your sisters, Richard, myself, and Jackson. Hell, this entire hospital is here for you. You do the only thing we know how to do, and you push through it. You're always going to miss your baby, the same way you'll always miss your mom, but it won't always be this painful. I know you learned that the hard way, but you know it's the truth."
She nods "Thank you." she fiddles with her hands and Catherine can tell she's struggling with what she wants to say next. Catherine knows exactly what it is, but she'll let Maggie come to it on her own. "Ho-how is he?"
"About as good as you. Just a little less banged up." Catherine says and they both chuckle, "He's hurting Maggie. He misses you. He just wants to take care of you, and his guilt is eating him alive but he's trying to push through…. The rattle is beautiful."
Maggie's eyes snap to hers, "You have it?"
"Jackson does."
She looks confused "How?"
"He found it laying by a pool of your blood."
Maggie gasps "My Gosh."
"Maggie he needs you and you need him. Don't make the same mistake he and April made. You should be going through this together."
"This is completely different Catherine."
"In some ways, absolutely. But not in the most important ways. Look, I'm not telling you what to do. I'm just telling you what's real to me. It's what mamas do." Catherine shrugs.
"No, I know. I just don't know that I can see him without seeing everything we lost and thinking about the reason why. His stupid God quest was a big issue in our relationship and it just keeps coming back to bite us in the ass, and this time it took my baby with it. How am I supposed to let that go?"
"Maggie, I know that a part of you blames Jackson for bringing that woman into your lives, but what else is bothering you? I can see it in your eyes."
She fiddles with her hands for a minute before looking up at Catherine and whispering, "It's my fault too."
"How so?"
"The last time she was here, I slapped her. She told a lie about Jackson and I got pissed because we were just starting to work things out and I went to her hotel room and I slapped her. I provoked her Catherine. I provoked her and when she came to get me back I couldn't protect my baby." She cries.
"Oh baby girl." She hugs Maggie to her chest, "that's absolute nonsense. See? This is why you and Jackson need each other. You're both idiots." She smiles.
Maggie can't help but laugh. "Look, I can't guarantee I won't send him right back out, but you can tell him he can come by during normal hours tomorrow."
"Good. Even if you send him back out it's the trying that matters. This is where you fight Maggie. When things are the ugliest, and the most painful, that's when you have to fight the hardest. You just have to believe your love is worth it. If it's not, that's okay too. You just have to say that."
"It is." She whispers, "Worth it I mean. It's worth…. Everything."
Jackson is sitting in his mom's living room watching as Harriet draws another picture for Maggie. All he could think about though, was what Maggie was doing and how she was feeling. As heartbroken as he was about their baby, he wouldn't let himself feel it. Not until Kate was locked up, and he knew Maggie was okay. He knew that once he let himself really feel the pain, he'd more likely than not, get lost in it for a while and right now, he couldn't afford that.
"Daddy!" he's broken out of his thoughts by the sound of Harriet's voice, "did you hear me?"
"No baby, I'm sorry. What's up?"
"When does Maggie get to go home?"
"Well… we're not sure just yet but soon. The other doctors want to keep a close eye on her for a bit."
Harriet nods "Okay. So when can I go see her?"
"Maybe in a couple of days."
"You promise? Cause I miss her, a lot. And I wanna give her my picture myself."
"I promise I'll take you to her as soon as I can." He kisses the crown of her head, "now finish your picture, daddy's gonna go make a call."
He'd decided that since he couldn't be the one to take care of Maggie just yet, he would get to work on making sure Kate paid for what she did.
The phone rang five times before it was answered, "What Jackson?"
"I know I'm the last person you want to talk to but I think this is something you want just as much as I do."
"Stop talking in riddles. What is it you want? I'm not talking to Maggie for you." Meredith says.
Jackson sighs, "I wasn't going to ask. I was just wondering if you could meet me in the security office in half an hour. Go over the footage so that we can prove Kate did it."
"There aren't any cameras in the stairwell."
"No but all we have to do is prove that she wasn't sitting in the waiting area when she said she was, and then place her in the halls near the stairwell. That should be enough to at least catch her in a lie and maybe force a confession."
"Half an hour." And before he can say anything else, she hangs up the phone.
Jackson is on the elevator on his way to meet Meredith in the security office. His mom had come home as he was leaving which he was grateful for because that meant he wouldn't have to drag Harriet along and leave her in the daycare. As he leaned against the elevator wall he thought about what he would say to Maggie tomorrow when he went to see her. As he was leaving his mom told him that Maggie said it would be okay for him to stop by. He was so excited it was taking everything in him not to take a detour and go see her right now. The only reasons he didn't was because he wanted to have legit answers about what would happen to Kate for her the next time he saw her, and he wanted to respect her wishes right now.
"Good evening Dr. Avery."
He jumped slightly at the greeting. He hadn't even heard the doors open. He quickly glanced up to make sure he hadn't missed his floor then focused his attention on the woman in front of him.
"Hi, how are you Nurse Betty?"
"I'm good. Things are crazy, but I don't have to tell you that. Make sure Dr. Pierce knows we're praying for her."
Jackson smiles slightly, "I'm sure she does but I'll let her know."
"Great. Well this is me." she starts to exit the elevator then turns back briefly, "Hey, tell Dr. Kepner we miss her. Hopefully she isn't in such a rush next time she stops by." And then Betty is gone and the doors close.
Jackson briefly wonders why Betty mentioned April, she'd been gone nearly 2 years, but he quickly switches gears when the doors open on his floor. When he gets to the security room Meredith is already there and to his surprise, Amelia is with her. The surprise must show on his face because Amelia rolls her eyes at him before turning towards the screens.
"I'm going to overlook the fact that you didn't invite me along for this. Now, do you know how to work this thing because we can't figure it out." Amelia says.
"You started without me?" he asks.
"We got bored waiting. Now do you or don't you?" Meredith says annoyed.
Jackson takes a seat in front of the main screen and starts hitting buttons. They took that as a yes.
"Now, Amelia what time was it when you found Maggie and how long do you think she was there?" he asks.
"It was like 1:45 and she had to be there for 20 minutes minimum but it could've been longer."
He pressed a few more buttons and suddenly the waiting area Kate said she was in appeared on the screen.
"Why are we looking at this?" Amelia asks impatiently.
Jackson points at the screen and they all see Kate sitting there, "First we're going to disprove her claim that she was in the waiting area the whole time."
They all sit and watch the screen as it fast forwards. Jackson pulled the video up for the time frame of 12pm and 2pm. They all watched with bated breath and jumped every time Kate got up out of her seat. When the video stopped playing Jackson double checked the times he entered and they all watched it again. What the hell? While Kate had gotten up a few times, she had never left the camera frame. The furthest she ever went was the nurses desk. Around the time Maggie had to have been pushed Kate had been anxiously sitting in the waiting area. Around the time Maggie was found she had been anxiously pacing… in the waiting area. Her story checked out. There was no way she could've pushed Maggie. They all look at each other in dumbfounded silence.
Jackson breaks the silence, "So… it wasn't Kate?" he looks at them confused.
"Do you think Maggie was confused? Maybe she did trip?" Amelia tentatively questions.
Jackson seems to consider it but Meredith speaks, "Absolutely not. Let's pull up the video from the halls surrounding the staircase now."
"I am. I will. I just- what makes you so sure? Sometimes trauma can alter our memory."
Meredith rolls her eyes, "I'm a doctor, I know that Jackson." she shrugs and then continues, "I just know it. I can't explain it but I know it. Even before she said she was pushed, I felt it."
Jackson silently pulled up both halls and a camera that had an angle on Carina's office. This time he set the time for 12:55pm and 2pm. Carina had said Maggie had come into her office around 1 that afternoon and according to his messages, the last text he received from Maggie was at 12:57. He assumed she'd sent the text right before going in to meet Carina. This time however, he didn't put the video in fast forward. They needed to see everything that went on. Even the people who passed by while Maggie was in Carina's office, everyone was a suspect. He watched as Maggie paused outside of Carina's office, phone in hand, no doubt texting him, and then she disappeared behind the door.
They sat just watching when Amelia sat up closer. "Hey, can you rewind a bit?"
He did as he was told and they all watched where Amelia pointed. There was a woman with her hat pulled down low, standing a couple of yards from Carina's office.
"It was her." Amelia points.
"Amelia..." Meredith starts
"Jackson, just focus on her. You're not the only one with an intuition Meredith."
They sat back and watched as Maggie walked out of Carina's office and as soon as she did, the woman in the hat started to follow her. They watch as Maggie disappears behind the door to the stairwell, and then the woman in the hat checks her surroundings before following behind her.
"I knew it. If she fell, that woman should have been the one to find her and call for help but we all know that didn't happen. It was her, she pushed her. Now we have to figure out who the hell she is. Go back Jackson!"
They sit anxiously while Jackson rewinds, and zooms in. They all study the screen quietly and then gasp collectively. They can't see her face clearly but they'd known her for years. There was no mistaking it.
"That can't be…" Meredith says.
"I thought she was in Iowa." Amelia asks dumbfounded.
Amelia and Meredith watch silently while Jackson stares at the screen in silence for a minute before he bolts up and vomits into a trashcan.
"I was going to apologize, but looks like it's still your fault Avery." Meredith says.
"Mer… Jackson you okay?"
He vomits again and then takes a seat against the wall, holding his head in his hands. They all sit in silence for what seems like hours but really it was only a few minutes.
Meredith pulls out her phone, "I'm calling the cops."
Jackson jumps up, "No, wait…."
"Wait? Wasn't that the point of this project Jackson? To get evidence for the cops." Meredith says frustrated.
"Yeah. I just- I…" Jackson tries.
"She knew about the baby Jackson. She knew and she still did what she did." Amelia adds softly.
Jackson looks panicked, "What? No. I don't think- I mean, it doesn't change what she did but I don't think she knew. She couldn't have."
"And I'm sure you didn't think she could physically hurt anyone for any reason. Hell neither did I, but we just saw differently." Meredith says.
"We saw her Jackson. She watched Maggie leave Carina's office looking like she was floating on a cloud. She knew. And I'm guessing it was the reason why she did it." Amelia adds.
And again, Jackson vomits in the trashcan.
Review! Let me know what you guys think!
I know this is all a bit dramatic but I've watched General Hospital since I was kid. It's been over 20 years. All I know is dramatic, over the top soapy storylines. Lol
