Chapter 24 Failed

I stood at Fili's side as he stood by Thorin. I stood with my hand on the bow as we watch legions of Elves and men armed for battle, marching towards the mountain. I had a strange feeling that Azog was already heading our way and we had no time for this. Thrandruil and Bard ride togehter to the front of the armies. They come up to the broken bridge. Thorin draws a bow and shoots an arrow at the ground directly in front of Thranduil and Bard. They come to a halt in surprise.

"I will put the next one between your eyes!" Thorin said, as he draws his bow again. Dwarves cheer and shake their weapons. I stayed quiet. Remi and Zarrek stood with the humans in their human form. Thranduil stares up at Thorin, angrily. He tilts his head. Several rows of Elves near the front pull out their bows, nocking arrow, and aim up at the dwarves. The dwarves drop to the ground. I roll my eyes as me and Thorin stood.

"Stubburn dwarves." I grumble in elvish. The elves hold the pose for awhile til Thranduil raises his hand and the elves put away their weapons. The dwarves stand up.

"We've come to tell you. Payment of your debt has been offered and accepted." Thranduil said with a smug look on his face.

"What payment? I gave you nothing! You have nothing!" Thorin said.

"We have this!" Bard said, pulling the Arkenstone from his pocket. Thorin lowers his bow, looking shocked.

"They have the Arkenstone? Thieves! How came you by the heirloom of our house? That stone belongs to the King!" Kili shouted.

"And the king may have it. In our good will." Bard said. He puts the stone away. I saw Fili look at me. I held a straight face as I looked at him. "But first he must honor his word."

"They are taking us for fools. This is a ruse, a filthy lie." Thorin said, in a near whisper.

"Thorin." I said. He glares at me. Balin looked shocked at Thorin's mental state. Fili looked worried.

"THE ARKENSTONE IS IN THE MOUNTAIN! IT IS A TRICK!" Thorin shouted. I flinch at his angry words. Bilbo comes out of the dwarves to face Thorin.

"It's not a trick. The stone is real. I gave it to them." Bilbo said.

"You..." Thorin said. Fili turned to me.

"Did you know?" Fili asked. I looked at him with sad eyes.

"I'm sorry Fili." I whisper. Fili's eyes widen as we turn to watch as Thorin turned on Bilbo.

"I took it as my fourteenth share." Bilbo said.

"You would steal from me?" Thorin asked.

"Steal from you? No. No. I may be a burglar, but I like to think I'm an honest one. I'm willing to let it stand against my claim." Bilbo said.

"Against your claim?! Your claim! You have no claim over me you miserable rat!" Thorin said. He throws the bow down in anger and begins walking towards Bilbo. I grab Fili.

"Fili. Please. Understand that I helped Bilbo to save yer family." I whisper. Fili didn't answer and I feared he was mad at me.

"I was going to give it to you. Many times I wanted to. But..." Bilbo froze trying to think what he was going to say.

"But what, thief?!" Thorin said.

"You have changed, Thorin! The dwarf I met in Bag ENd would never have gone back on his word! Would never have doubted the loyalty of his his kin!" Bilbo said. Dwarves looked at each other in shock.

"Do not speak of me of loyalty!" Thorin said. He turns to the dwarves. "Throw him from the rampart."

"What?" I said. Dwarves didn't move as Bilbo looked shocked.

"Do you hear me?!" Thorin said, grabbing Fili. Fili ripped his arm from his uncle. "I will do It myself." Thorin went to get Bilbo and I grabbed his arm and put my hand to his face as my hand glowed with the healing. Thorin sput and punched me hard in the face. I hit the ground.

"THORIN!" Fili yelled, running to me with Kili.

"LEAVE HER!" Thorin shouted. Fili and Kili froze. I felt tears in my face.

"Bilbo is right." I said, pulling myself to my feet as my face throbbed. I knew dwarves would never lay hands on their women or any woman. Thorin was to far gone and I felt like my healing worked maybe some.

"What did you say?!" Thorin turned on me.

"Yer to far gone with the sickness that took your grandfather for me to save you!" I said.

"Don't compare me to my grandfather, child of Valar." Thorin sneered.

"Yer turning into him. I risked finding out of the Arkenstone to save ye and yer nephews so you don't suffer the same fate!" I said.

"So you knew the thief had the stone. I'll throw you both over." Thorin said. Thorin grabs Bilbo first and pushes him over the ramperts."

"No!" Fili said. The dwarves try and stop Thorin. Bofur and Bifur held me back, protecting me.

"Cursed be the Wizard that forced you on this Company!" Thorin shouted.

"IF YOU DON'T LIKE MY BURLAR!" I turn and see Gandalf pushing through the crowd. " Then please don't damage him. Return him to me! You're not making a very splendid figure as King under the mountain, are you? Thorin son of Thrain." Thorin let got of Bilbo and dwarves rush to get him up. Thorin turned on me and my eyes widen as Fili turned as Thorin approached.

"I'll send the girl with but first." Thorin said, drawing his sword.

"UNCLE NO." Fili yelled, running, but Thorin cuts the courting braid off and I couldn't hold back the tears.

"You'll never see Fili again and I'll kill you if you step foot in the mountain." Thorin said. Fili looked hurt. Bofur grabs me and Bilbo and pushes us towards the rope.

"Never again will I have dealings with wizards." Thorin said.

"Go." Bofur said. Bilbo goes first. I get on the rampart holding the rope. I looked at Fili, who Kili was standing next to him. He was trying to hold in the tears as I felt mine falling. I change into my human form as I go down the rampart. I jumped to the ground. "Or Shire Rats!" I run towards my brothers.

"Your going to have a black and blue eye." Remi said.

"The sickness has won." I said. I prayed that some of the healing powers will help him recover. I turn to look at the mountain. Fili was staring at me. Pain was written all over his handsome face. "Oh Fili. I'm so sorry." I whisper.

"Are we resolved? The return of the Arkenstone for what was promised?" Bard asked. Thorin was breathing heavily as he looks to a ridge in the distance as if he was looking for something. "Give us your answer! Will you have peace or war?" Thorin bows his head and I thought he was going to answer as a raven flies up to him and sits next to him. The two stare at each other.

"I will have war!" Thorin shouted. A rumbling comes and I look in the distance as an army of dwarves come over the ridge. A huge dwarf led them a battle pig.

"Ironfoot." I said. The dwarves begin cheering. "For Mahal's sake. Thorin sent for backup." I said.

"Rush the shield fence." Thranduil yelled in elvish, riding his deer through the army. The Laketown people and elves turn and march towards the coming dwarves. I rush forward with my brothers to join Gandalf.

"Who is that? He doens't look very happy." Bilbo said as we walk with Gandalf.

"It is Dain, lord of the Iron Hills, Thorin's cousin." Gandalf said.

"Are they alike?" I ask.

"I always found Thorin the more reasonable of the two." Gandalf said. I snort at that.

"That's questionable now." I said. Gandalf nodded as the army comes to a stop. I stood with Gandalf and my brothers as Dain approaches us onto a rocky overlook to address us.

"Good morning! How are we all? I have a wee proposition, if you wouldn't mind giving me a few moment of your time. Would you consider just SODDING OFF!" Dain yelled. I rubbed my forehead as the townspeople stepback in fear. Thorin was more reasoable then Dain. "All of you. Right now!" Gandalf moved foward.

"Stand fast!" Bard said.

"Come now, lord Dain!" Gandalf said.

"Gandalf the Grey. Tell this rabble to leave, or I'll water the ground in their blood!" Dain said.

"There is no need for war between dwarves, men, and elves! A legion of orcs march on the mountain. Stand your army down!" Gandalf said.

"I will not stand down before any elf! not least this faithless woodland sprite!" Dain said. He gestures to Thranduil. "He wishes nothing but ill upon my people! If he chooses to stnad between me and my kin. I'll split his pretty head open! See if he's still smirking then!" Thranduil was smiling, furiously. The dwarves cheer.

"He's clearly mad, like his cousin." Thranduil said. I move forward.

"Lord Dain. I'm Laila Daughter of Valar. Please listen to Gandalf. Azog looks to whipe out the Line of Durin and yer next to take the throne if Thorin and his heirs are killed. Ye need to side with the elves and men to stop Azog." I said. Dain looks at me and then ignores me as he turns. I sigh in fustration. Why did I have to fall in love with a dwarf from a crazy family and are hard heads?

"You hear that lads. Come on! Let's give these elves a good hammering." Dain said, riding for his army.

"Ye sure you want to marry into the dwarf family?" Zarrek asks. I ignore my brother as a dwarf yells a command and the Iron Hill dwarves raise their weapons and cheer. The elves perform a maneuver to put their shield and spear bearers at the front of the army while the archers stand behind them. A rumbling suddenly heard. My brothers and I share looks of worry.

"Were worms" Gandalf said. I turn as were worms burst fromt the ground.

"Valar." I said. The mouths were like giant drilling machines, strong enough to cursh the toughest rocks in their jaws.

"Fight of our lifetime." Remi said with a smirk. I was the only one of us that fought in the War of the Ring. I roll my eyes at them.

"Oh come on!" Dain yelled. The worms retreat and a horn blew. Legions of orcs burst through the holes.

"Valar save us all." I pray.

"The hordes of hell are upon us! To battle! To battle, sons of Durin!" Dain yelled. Dain and part of his army turn and rush the oncoming orcs.

Fili's POV. Orcs were heading towards our kin, the elves, and humans. Laila was caught in it. I went and picked up my bead and put it in my pocket. I turn to the Company.

"I'm going over the wall! Who's coming with me?" I ask. Dwarves cheer and agree as we plan to climb down.

"STAND DOWN!" Thorin shouted. I turn and looked at uncle.

"What?" Dwalin asked.

"Are we to do nothing? My one is down there!" I said.

"I said STAND DOWN!" Thorin said. Thorin walks away. Kili put a hand on my shoulder.

"She will survive. She is a fighter." Kili said.

"I still worry." I said. She was right. Uncle was gone to the gold sickness. "Mahal. Help him." I whisper. We turn to watch the battle.

Laila's POV. I pull out my sword and my brothers follow as the dwarves make a line building a shield wall in front of them.

"The elves, will they not fight?" Bilbo asked.

"Thranduil! This is madness!" Gandalf yelled. Thranduil says nothing as he looks at the oncoming dwarves. The orch reach the dwarves and elves jump over the shield and start killing orcs. My brothers and I ran and jump over the shield as well, letting out battle cries as we join the battle. The fight for Erebor has begun.

AN: Oh God. that was emotional to write. Pool Fili and Laila. Till next time
