Chapter 24: Field Trip
All of Class 1-A, with the exception of Bakugo, held their breath, watching Gohan, bowing his head, struggling to get the words out. "I'd like to ask you all...please… Come with me to Mt. Paozu to visit my father's grave." All eyes were on him, and the room fell quiet. "I know it's sudden. To be frank, I don't even know if we'll be approved to go. There's so much that I've been hiding, and I want to reveal everything because it's not fair for me to keep secrets from all of you. You're my friends, and I would like to reveal everything under my father's protection, at his grave."
"Gohan…" Midoriya was speechless. Walking up to his friend, he reached a hand put and firmly squeezed the young man's shoulder, prompting him to look up. "I'll go with you. Let's go visit your father's grave."
As Gohan began to smile, Ururaka joined Deku's side. "Yeah, we'll come with you, Gohan. You've done so much for all of us, it's the least we could do."
"I must say, as the Class Representative, we must get permission before making any plans. However, if Mr. Aizawa will approve a field trip to the mountains, then I'll gladly join along." Iida told him, holding his hands on his hips.
"I've never been to the mountains before!" Hagakure shouted, her clothes indicating that she had a hand in the air.
"Isn't Mt. Paozu the dinosaur reserve?" Mineta questioned, biting his fingernails.
"Dinosaurs!?" Koda asked, his eyes lighting up. "I've always wanted to see a dinosaur! Aren't they supposed to be extinct!?"
"Yeah, but there was a man, Haruhi something, who had a restoration Quirk. So a long time ago he opened up a dinosaur sanctuary and kept their breeding strict. They're somewhat domesticated but the parts of the mountain that people are allowed to visit have guides with Quirks like Koda's." Kaminari explained with a finger on his chin.
"That's incredible! I'd love to be able to see a T-Rex with my own eyes!" Yaoyarozu said, pressing her fingertips together.
"I don't think you'd want to come face to face with a wild T-Rex, Yaomomo." Jiro said, scratching the back of her head.
"I think it'd be great!" Ashido called out, pumping her fist.
"I think some fresh mountain air would be beneficial to all of us. Don't you think, Todoroki?" Tokoyami asked his classmate.
"Yeah."
"Oui, without all of the distracting city lights, I can truly sparkle!" Aoyama claimed in agreement.
"I think I'd enjoy a trip to the mountain." Shoji spoke from one of his mouths.
"I'm not sure Bakugo would be on board, but I don't think he'll have a choice if it's a class field trip." Kirishima explained with a manly smile.
"Gohan. Ribbit. Are there any places to swim?" Asui asked him, approaching the kitchen.
"Yeah! There's this huge river near my house and it always has fresh clean water! So much so that you can see right through it! And there's always these massive fish I used to catch that swim there!" He explained excitedly.
"I've always wanted a chance to swim in a mountain stream. Ribbit." She told him. "You can count me in."
"Alright! Field trip!" Sero shouted.
Sato approached Gohan from behind and rested his hands on his shoulders. As he turned around, Sato gave him a determined smile. "I'll put together plenty of snacks for everyone."
"Everybody…" Gohan was overwhelmed, and the corners of his mouth creeped ever further into a smile. "Thank you!"
The following day, Gohan packed his bag and prepped to go see Mr. Aizawa in the faculty office. He had spent the day putting together a form of itinerary in order to persuade his teacher. "Gohan, are you heading to see the principal?" Midoriya asked him.
"I'm going to see Mr. Aizawa, first. I figured that if I wanted Principal Nezu on board, I would have to convince him first, anyway." He said as he finished packing his bag.
"I'll come with you. I was going to see All Might to ask him about the Work Study." He told him as the two walked out of the whole classroom.
"Hey, so, Izuku?"
"What is it?" Midoriya responded, turning to his friend.
"I noticed you still call All Might 'All Might'. Don't you all think it's time to start calling him Mr. Yagi?" Gohan asked him.
The thought seemed to strike Midoriya. "I guess we all call him All Might in order to show our respect for him. All that All Might has done, not just for us, but for the whole world. I just couldn't imagine calling him anything else."
"Izuku," Gohan looked around to ensure that nobody was around, "you're the next All Might. I don't want to sound rude, but All Might is dead, but the story of Toshinori Yagi still lives on. I think it'd be best if we all respect that, but I won't force anybody." The thought bounced around Midoriya's head as they entered the faculty office.
Midoriya approached his idol. "All Mi-!" Now that I think about it, if I never met All Might, would I have ever met Toshinori Yagi…? The thought began to really resonate with him as he began to understand what Gohan meant. "M-Mr. Yagi, would you introduce my to your old Sidekick, Mr. Nighteye?" I need to stop acting like a fanboy, and start acting like a successor… You're right, Gohan!
"Woah!" The sound of his own name took him as a surprise. "I wasn't expecting you to call me that."
"Oh, I'm sorry! I can go back to-" He was cut off by All Might's laughter.
"No, no, it's alright. I'm happy for you all to think of me more as your teacher than the world's greatest hero, at least in my retirement." He told him.
Gohan slightly overheard the conversation, making him happy that Midoriya took his advice. "Field trip?" Mr. Aizawa said.
"Yes, sir. I know that you will all most likely be against the idea, but I figured that the least I could do was try to convince you. Now see, I think that it would be good for the class to take in some fresh air after everything going on. I recommend the mountain that I grew up on, Mt. Paozu." Gohan pulled the map out of his bag and allowed it to unroll. "Although the mountain is teeming with dinosaurs, they're domesticated by a wide-range Quirk similar to Koda's. It'd be good for refreshing our knowledge on the creatures that existed during different eras of prehistoric times."
"Gohan, I know you miss home, but for us to take a field trip all the way to Mustu wouldn't be wise. Especially with the recent movement of Villains." He explained, standing up from his chair.
"I understand that, but Mustu is so far out, it'd be unlikely for the Villains to waste their time following us all the way out across Japan." Gohan responded sternly.
"Come on, Shoza!" Android 21, now named Kyoju Kyoka, suddenly chimed in. "I'll even go with them. Ya know I'm the strongest one here." She told him.
Aizawa growled at the nickname. "I told you to drop that name. And that's not the issue!" He told her. "I can't even be sure that the school just happens to have that kind of money laying around after all of our defense enhancements. It's a matter of safety and funding." He explained, putting his hands in his pockets. "Gohan, to level with you, you should really be focusing on your Work Study right now. You've got a bright future ahead of you, so take the opportunities you have while they're available."
"Mr. Aizawa, what if I could get the school the funding?" He asked him.
After several moments of silence, Aizawa fought against his better judgement. "Well if that was the case, and Kyoka decided to go with you, then I guess we really have no reason to object. When All Mi- I mean, Yagi, and I went out there, I saw a few hot spring towns, too. I guess it wouldn't be all bad for the class to take some time to relax after everything that's happened." He said, filling Gohan with hope.
"Really?!" Gohan asked with a smile on his face.
"On a few conditions, however!" Aizawa said, holding up his fist. "First, none of you will engage in any form of trouble." He said, holding up one finger. "Two, you will continue to train harder than you were at the summer camp. And three," he began, holding up another finger, "if any of you break these rules, try to handle a Villain on your own, or allow yourselves to get badly wounded and/or abducted by a Villain, I will cancel any plans for school trips for the rest of your time here at UA. Do I make myself clear?!" Gohan could feel the weight of his threat, knowing that he was putting a lot of faith in him, despite not needing to. "Kyoka, I'll accompany you in chaperoning." He told her as he walked towards the door. "I'll crunch some numbers and get you the total amount you need to raise." Aizawa said before leaving the room.
Gohan took out his phone and gave a call to his old friend. "Bulma?"
"Hey, Gohan, what can I do for you?" She asked him, taking off her welding mask.
"So I suggested a school trip out to Mt. Paozu for my class. Mr. Aizawa agreed to it, but only if I found a way to get the money." He explained, taking a seat in the chair that his teacher left behind.
"Well, how much do you need?" She asked him, switching the phone to her other shoulder so she could wipe the other side of her head.
"I don't know yet. He told me that he'll crunch the numbers and let me know." Gohan told her.
"Alright, well when you find out, just let me know. I'll write a check out for your school once you get the number." She told him.
"I didn't even ask for any money, Bulma!" Gohan didn't want to seem greedy in asking, but even he understood that asking her was the fastest way.
"And I didn't ask for you to save Vegeta and kill Cell, so let's just say I'm repaying a debt. Just keep me updated, alright?" She told him. "I have to get back to work."
"O-Okay. Thank you so much, Bulma. I'll talk to you later." He said as the tone for being hung up on played.
"Ms. Kyoka, could you let Principal Nezu know that he can contact Capsule Corps on my behalf and inform Bulma Brief of how much money the school needs for Class 1-A's trip?" He asked her, bringing himself to his feet.
"Of course! I can't wait to stop by a hot spring!" And just like that, Class 1-A's Mt. Paozu trip was now in motion.
