CHAPTER 16: If There's a Will, There's a Way (Fandom: Harry Potter)
War was a terrible thing, Draco should know as he ran away from one. Draco himself had been living in America as a muggle, or No-Maj as they were called here, for almost a year now. Far away from Britain and far away from MACUSA, Draco could ignore that he was supposed to be a wanted criminal.
So under the name Joseph Jones, he lived in the midwest and made money fixing clocks.
Sure, analog clocks were going out of style, but a clock repairman was always needed.
One day he went to town to buy some tools, and that was when he saw it.
Dollar General.
For a moment, he stood there and debated if he should go in. There was probably little chance of anyone knowing who he was, and he was very curious why a famous Wizarding shop was in the middle of a Muggle town, especially one that he could see Muggles wandering inside.
"Hi, welcome to Dollar General."
Draco walked over to the lady who had greeted him as he entered and asked, "I don't remember your store being here last time I came in."
The lady's eyebrows rose a fraction, "A wizard then?"
He reared back as if he had been slapped and hissed, "Not so loud!"
Shaking her head, the lady said, "No need, everyone's known about you guys for a few years now," she paused but continued when it became apparent he was shocked silent, "Electronics haven't been disabled by magic in a while, mostly because the Japanese weren't going to be without their animations, no way José. What's a Brit like you doing in Star Spangled America anyway?"
Draco recovered from his worldview shattering quicker than most, and he cleared his throat before answering, "I was escaping the most recent Wizarding War and hitched a ride on an airplane going anywhere and ended up here. How did you know I was British?"
"You've done a good job disguising your accent," she winked, "but I'm better, no way José am I going to make that mistake again."
He glowered, "Stop calling me José, that's not my name! It's Joseph."
Waving him off, she explained, "It's a phrase, I like to use it."
Calming down, Draco nodded. She then quietly asked, "What did you want to do before the war?"
He sighed, "I wanted to lead something. The Quidditch team, an Auror team, anything. Now I'm hiding here as a clock repairman."
She nodded sagely, then said, "You know, the voting for the Prime Minister candidates is coming up soon. I know that they have a wizard… I don't know the name but they give wizards coming out of their hole the papers required to live out here. They could probably set you up to try and run for Prime Minister?"
Chuckling sadly, he shook his head and made for the door, calling over his shoulder, "How would I get there?"
He exited and looked out upon the busy streets of London. He spun around and caught the lady giving him a smile and a cheeky wave before the inside seemed to distort and he was looking into a different Dollar General.
He turned back around.
As she said, no way José was he giving up this chance.
Hmm, that's a satisfying phrase, maybe he'll use it more.
(Author-sama assures you, yes this is a prequel to Chapter 8. No, nothing more will be written in this universe.)
