2012 — DANCING:

"Daddy!"

Harry looked up from the list of trainee applications he had been hoping to go over on his day off. Ginny had run into work for the afternoon, leaving him alone with the kids. He didn't mind that in the least, but he knew what that particular shout entailed.

Someone had said something or done something to annoy another. This was one of those moments he missed Teddy the most. Having his godson at Hogwarts was great and he knew how much his eldest was loving his first year in Hufflepuff, but he'd gotten used to having the boy play referee during times of crisis. Teddy was extremely good at stopping the boys from killing each other and in keeping the peace between the boys and Lily.

Harry put his quill down as Lily came running into the kitchen, tears in her eyes. She wore a pink leotard and pink tights with a rainbow tule skirt that her godmother had made for her. It was covered in sparkles and Lily loved it. She wanted to wear it everywhere. At almost six, she had him completely wrapped around her finger and he knew it.

"Daddy! Jamie and Albus said my dancing was stupid!"

Harry lifted her into his lap, his heart breaking when she buried her face in his chest. "They said it was stupid?"

She nodded. "Uh-huh! But I gotta practice! My recital is next week and Miss Maggie says I have to work on it!"

Harry knew how important her dance recital was. Lily took dance at a nearby Muggle studio where they taught a mix of ballet, tap, and jazz for students ages four to eight. She loved it. For her recital, Miss Maggie has taught them a fun dance routine to perform at the end and Lily was so excited about it.

"Come on," he said, carrying her upstairs and out onto the roof of Grimmauld Place.

He and Ginny had converted the large roof into a garden and yard where the kids could play football and have fun. They'd erected a huge magical fence that made sure Quaffles, footballs, or anything else couldn't be thrown off the roof. The ward was almost more like a giant impenetrable bubble that kept them safe and out of sight. Since the house was warded against pretty much everything, it was really only an added precaution for roof safety.

Harry found James and Albus playing football.

"James, Albus, come here."

The boys stopped what they were doing as Harry put Lily on the ground. He kicked the football when it moved towards him before he crossed his arms in front of his chest.

"Now, I know that you two think dancing is stupid. I can't dance much myself, but I do know that when someone is learning how to do something, we don't make fun of them for it."

"Dad, we're trying to play football and she's twirling all around us and lifting her legs up!" James protested. At nine, he seemed determined to always be right as of late.

"She's trying to practice. She has a recital coming up and you boys are going to be in the front row, cheering her on."

Albus rolled his eyes. "I'd rather be at my football game."

"What happened last Saturday at your game, Al?"

Albus shuffled his feet. "We lost."

"Yes, and what did Lily do?"

Albus' eyes met his father's. "She hugged me and told me that I played great."

"Exactly," Harry said. "And what did Lily do at your last Quidditch match, James?"

James bowed his head. "Screamed my name like a chant when I scored a goal."

"Exactly," Harry repeated. "Now it's your turn to support your sister." Both boys remained silent so Harry turned to his daughter. "Show us what you're working on, Lily."

Lily immediately grinned, bouncing in excitement. She ran to the stereo to put on her song. The Muggle dance school had chosen the popular British hit song by the boy band One Direction. "What Makes You Beautiful" began to play and Lily immediately began to dive into her routine.

Jump to the left, shoulder shrug, jump to the right, shoulder shrug. Leg out, arm up, head roll, arms wide as she skipped back, crossed her arms, crossed her legs, buried her head, all very much on point. But when she got to the chorus and had to do the fist pump and bended as she jumped, she stumbled.

She blew her hair out of her eyes and fixed her purple glasses.

"I can't get that step right!"

Harry smiled. He knew how hard she'd been practicing. "Teach it to us, Lily. It will help you practice. Jamie, Al, and I are going to learn it, aren't we boys?"

James and Albus groaned in response.

Lily immediately grinned widely as she showed them her dance step by step.

"Then its hip check, step, step, hip check, step," she instructed.

Within thirty minutes, Harry thought that the four of them were doing pretty well.

"Hands up and jump," Lily instructed, as she led them. "You have to move your hips to the beat, Daddy!"

Harry intentionally kept tripping over his feet (mostly) and when Albus corrected him on how to appropriately move his hips, he felt like he'd saved the day.

It was where Ginny found them an hour later.

When she opened the door to the house and found it empty, she'd made her way up to the roof. She could hear the loud bass of the music and she was smiling as she pushed the door open. The last thing she expected to find was three of her boys dancing and shaking their butts alongside of Lily as she led the way through her dance routine to One Direction.

Reaching into her bag, she pulled out the camera she'd been using for work and clicked six quick shots, a big smile on her face.

"Well, what do we have here?"

"Mummy!" Lily cried, running towards her with her arms outstretched. "Daddy, Jamie, and Al are helping me with my dance moves!"

"I can see that," Ginny said, her eyes twinkling at Harry as he walked towards her. "Can I see the whole thing from the top?"

The back of Harry's neck flushed. "Yes, go on, you lot; show Mum what you learned."

He bent down to kiss her. "The boys said her dancing was stupid."

Ginny laced her fingers through his hair and pulled him back for another kiss, loving the dark stubble beard on his face. "I want to see your moves too, Auror Potter"

"Yes, Daddy! You dance too!" Lily squealed grabbing his hand.

Harry rolled his eyes as Lily said. "Five! Six! Seven! Eight!"

Ginny watched in amusement as the four of them nailed Lily's dance number to perfection. Just as they were finishing up, Harry took her hand and pulled her into the dance so that she could join in.

When he tugged her close to kiss her, she cuddled into his warm embrace.

"You don't know, oh, oh, you don't know you're beautiful. That's what makes you beautiful," Harry sang into her ear.

Ginny smiled and kissed him. "You really can't sing at all."

"Doesn't make the words less true," he told her, spinning her out and into his arms.

"Daddy! That's not the right move!"

"Sorry, Lily. Show us again."

Lily rolled her eyes. "It's arm up and leg up as you jump, like this and then again facing the other way."

Harry and Ginny both moved into the dance as James and Albus followed and Lily beamed.

"You got it!"

"That's what makes you beautiful!" James sang, high-fiving Albus as they moved into the next dance sequence.

The boys had taken to the dance moves like mermaids to water. It made Harry grin to watch them jumping and dancing behind Lily as if she was the lead dancer of their little ensemble.

"Sometimes I love you more than I say," she whispered.

Harry kissed her again, his hands sliding up her back into her hair as he deepened the kiss and their kids made groaning and gagging sounds in the background.

Harry responded by kissing his wife's neck before he scooped Albus up into his arms and peppered his face in kisses as he laughed and cried out for him to stop. Harry kissed his forehead once more before he whispered to Albus his plan and they both tackled James, kissing and tickling him as well.

"Dad!" James squealed between giggles as he was tickled mercilessly.

Ginny was holding Lily on her hip, their daughter's head nuzzled into her shoulder and when all three boys turned to look at them, she shook her head.

"Oh no, you don't!"

Then she laughed as Harry, James, and Albus all grabbed them and began to tickle them mercilessly. Ginny and Lily attempted to fight back, laughing. When the five of them were finally out of breath, she turned to grin at her husband.

"Now, who wants to mirror-call Teddy and show him the new family dance number?"

James' eyes widened. "Mum! Teddy can't see us dancing like this! It's embarrassing!"

Harry ruffled his son's hair. "Looked to me like you kids were pros."

Lily giggled and ran into Harry's arms. "I want to show Teddy, Daddy! Let's call him!"

Albus grinned sheepishly. "Maybe we could do it just one more time."

Ginny put her arm around James' shoulders as Harry put his arm around Albus. "Harry, get the mirror. It's time to show Teddy what makes you all beautiful."

James buried his face in his hands. "You're so embarrassing, Mum," he groaned.

Ginny covered his face in kisses as he laughed. "You just wait, James Potter. This is nothing."

James snuck a look over at his father as he pulled out the mirror and grinned. "Maybe just one more time."

Lily jumped out of Harry's arms to hug James. "Let's do it!"

Ginny held the mirror out, smiling at Teddy's bright and happy face. "Want to see something that will make your whole night, Ted?"

"Always. What's going on, Mum?"

Ginny grinned mischievously. "Go on, Lily."

When Teddy's big laugh echoed through the mirror as Lily led her brothers and father in the dance routine, she thought that she had the best family in the whole world. She used her wand to hover the mirror and joined in, making her husband laugh.

Teddy smiled at them through the mirror and Harry thought that nothing on earth was a better sound than his children's laughter. He knew he could make the brightest Patronus right now.

End Author's Notes:

DISCLAIMER: I don't own the lyrics to One Direction's "What Makes You Beautiful".

When I saw it was one of the top songs of 2012 I felt like it was perfect for Lily's dance. Hope you enjoyed this great Dad Harry moment.
