Earthquake
Hello, everyone. This was suggested by a guest. It's Adam- earthquake- during the series. Enjoy. This is set between episodes two and three.
Adam and Brian were out checking the fence lines near the top of a hill in the high country.
"Everything looks ok." Brian sighed.
"Good. We should head back." Adam answered.
"Yeah."
They were walking back to the horses when they felt an earthquake. Adam was near the edge of the hill when it gave way and Adam fell along with it. When he fell, rocks and dirt hit him hard causing him to roll down the rest of the hill and hit his head on some rocks.
"Adam!" Brian exclaimed. When the earthquake ended, Brian looked over the edge and saw Adam down at the bottom of the hill. "Adam!"Adam didn't respond.
"Adam!" Brian exclaimed again. Brian tried to climb down, but the earth was too unstable. "Great. Just great."
Adam could feel rocks and dirt surrounding him. He opened his eyes and he looked around. He couldn't see Brian and it worried him.
"Brian!" Adam panicked.
"I'm up here, Adam. I'm fine. Listen, the ground's too unstable. I'll have to find another way down to you. Are you ok?" Brian explained. That's when Adam noticed how painful everything was.
"No. My whole body hurts."
"Try to stay awake. I'll find a way down there."
"Hurry."
Adam tried to move, but couldn't. He could tell that he had a concussion and that he had a few broken ribs. His left arm was in a bad position and it was covered in rocks and dirt. Adam tried to move, but all he could move was his head and his right hand. He looked over at his hand and saw that it was bleeding.
"Great." Adam sighed. Adam moved his free hand and carefully tried to push the smaller stones away. Soon, he was able to move his lower arm and he was able to clear his right arm of rocks and dirt. He looked at his hand and saw a large shallow cut on his palm. He pressed the back of his hand to his forehead and when he pulled it back, he found blood. He carefully pushed rocks off of his chest and left arm. When he was done, he saw that his left arm was pretty messed up. Adam tried to sit up, but he couldn't. He was able to look down at his legs and he saw that they were pinned.
"I'm not gonna be able to get of here alone." Adam grumbled.
AT the top, Brian was looking around trying to find a safe place to ride down. He managed to find an area on the other side of the hill and he rode down with both horses. Then he circles around the hill, but it took a while.
Adam was growing weaker. The blood on his forehead had seeped down to his right eye and had caused his eyelids to cake itself shut. Adam was in more pain than he was when he fell and he feared what injuries he had. He could hear footsteps and then he saw a figure walk towards him.
When Brian saw Adam, he could tell that Adam was injured severely. He walked over and knelt down with the first aid kit. He saw the blood caking Adam's eye and started to take a damp cloth and clean it.
"Took you long enough." Adam mumbled.
"Yeah. The rest of the hill was unstable. I had to go all the way to the other side and circle around." Brian sighed.
"Get the rocks off my legs."
"Yeah."
Brian pulled the rocks off of Adam's legs and saw blood, but nothing to indicate broken bones. He pressed Adam's legs but couldn't tell if they were broken.
"There's too much swelling. We'll have to get you to a hospital." Brian sighed.
"What about the rest of me?" Adam wondered. Brian examined the rest of Adam and sighed.
"You have a lot of cuts and scrapes. Maybe a couple of broken ribs. All I know is that it's 4 pm and you need help. DO you think you can move?"
"What choice do I have? If we don't... I'll have to wait till morning and I'm losing too much blood for that. We'll have to bandage me up and hope I make it home."
"Yeah. It's easier to get back from here. The ride is a little smoother too."
Brian grabbed the first aid kit and bandaged Adam's larger and more dangerous cuts and scrapes. When he was done, he helped Adam up. Adam cried out in pain but managed to move one foot in front of the other. They got to the horses and they climbed on. They rode back home and Brian made sure that Adam didn't fall off his horse. Halfway there, Adam became very weak.
"Adam, hey. You have to stay awake." Brian said.
"I can't. I'm exhausted." Adam mumbled.
"We're halfway home. Just another half an hour."
"OK."
Adam managed to stay awake. When they got to the edge of the woods, they could see the house. Brian looked at Adam and saw that he was unconscious.
"Adam!" Brian exclaimed. He reached over and gently shook Adam, but it did no good. "Great."
He carefully rode to the house with Adam and his horse in tow. When they arrived, Hannah ran out and ran up to Adam.
"What happened?" Hannah asked.
"The earthquake caused part of the hill to collapse and Adam fell. He's pretty beat up." Brian answered. He pulled Adam off the horse and carried him to the truck. Hannah got in and drove them to the hospital. Brian shook Adam who didn't respond. "Just hold on, Adam. Hold on."
When they arrived at the hospital, Adam was rushed back and treated. Brian and Hannah waited in the waiting room.
"We were lucky. It could have been a lot worse." Brian sighed.
"What happened?" Hannah asked.
"Uh, we were at the top of the hill near the national park. We had finished checking the fence lines when an earthquake hit. Adam was on the edge and he fell. Rock and dirt fell on top of him. It took him a while to wake up and it took me even longer to get to him. When I did, he had uncovered half of his body, but his legs were still trapped. I could tell he was in a lot of pain, but he didn't make a noise unless I touched him. I examined him, bandaged him up, and brought him home. You know, you hear about earthquakes and you know they're deadly, but you don't know just how deadly they are till you almost lose someone to one."
"But he's alive. He'll be ok."
"I hope so."
Dr. Wolf came out and walked over to Hannah and Brian.
"He's lucky. He only has a couple of broken ribs, a broken toe, and a broken finger. His left arm was dislocated and pretty well bruised. He had a few fractures all over, but they'll heal. He has a mild concussion and he's lost quite a bit of blood. He has a lot of cuts and he will have to stay till they're almost healed. The last thing we want is an infection. His back is pretty well bruised and he has a lot of swelling all over. He's sleeping right now. He's recovering from the shock. The landslide caused by the earthquake scared him even if he won't admit it. He should be dead or have more injuries than he has." Dr. Wolf explained. "I'll take you to his room."
They went to Adam's room and saw that he was moving in his sleep. Hannah went to Adam and caressed his cheek. Adam weakly opened his eyes and looked up at Hannah.
"Hi." Hannah whispered.
"Hey." Adam mumbled.
"How do you feel?"
"Not too good."
"You're very lucky."
"I know. I could have died. The earthquake... when it started... it scared me to death. I started falling and my head hit something or something hit my head. The next thing I remember is waking up covered in rocks and dirt and being in so much pain."
"Shh, get some sleep, Adam. You have a long road ahead of you."
Adam went back to sleep.
A few weeks later, Adam was able to go home, but the memories of what happened haunted him till the day he died. They all knew that it should have been worse, but it wasn't. He was lucky.
We are halfway through the Es. We have two more and then we are onto Fs. I know this may not have been the most realistic, but I did my research. It's just hard to find stuff dating back to the early 80s.
