"I know," Kim said, "I wanted him to have a better life then I could give him. It's just that when I think of everything I would have missed it's overwhelming."
Chris nodded.
"I'm just so relieved your suicide attempt didn't succeed," he said, "I don't know what I would have done without you."
"When I pulled the trigger," Kim said, "There was an angel there that looked like you. His name was Chester. He told me that I wasn't ready to die yet. It wasn't my time."
"I love him," Chris said, "He gave you back to me."
"I would always be watching over you," Kim said, "Just like I would always be watching over Tam. But I love Chester too."
"If we ever have another boy we should name him Chester," Chris said.
"It wouldn't be safe for me to have more children," Kim told him quietly.
Chris was surprised.
"Why," he asked her gently.
"When I had Tam I almost died," she said, "I was bleeding horribly."
Chris put his arms around her.
"We could always adopt," he said.
"I'd love that. There was this four year old girl in the orphanage who was put to sleep when I was working there," Kim said tears filling her eyes, "They weren't able to find a family for her in time. I would have adopted her but I was only 13 years old at the time."
Chris gasped softly.
"If we do adopt," Kim continued, "I'd like it to be from the orphanage I used to volunteer in. I want to actually save a baby or a child there."
"Absolutely," Chris said.
"But I'd like to wait a few years," Kim said, "I don't think Tam is quite ready for a sibling."
"I agree with that," Chris said.
Tam had been through so much and more change in his life would be too much for him to handle right now.
Chris put the dishes away while Kim swept up the floor.
"I love you Kim," Chris said.
"I love you too," Kim replied.
The next morning Chris was awaken by Tam coughing. He rushed into Tam's room.
"Hey buddy," he said, "You're not feeling good?"
"No," Tam said, "My throat hurts and I'm cold."
Chris felt Tam's forehead.
"You have a fever," he said, "Let's see how high."
He got a thermometer and put it to Tam's ear. It was 102.
"Yup you're sick," Chris said, "Just lie here. I'll get you some Tylenol for the fever and one of your pills for the pain."
"Can I have ice cream," Tam asked.
"Sure," Chris said.
He got Tam some ice cream, Tylenol and one of his pills.
