"Do we think Cham's plan will work?" asked Ezra, finishing wiping down one table and starting on another. He had spent all lunch thinking about it.
Sabine let out a sigh of relief. "Oh good, it's not just me." She used the mop to gather some dirt into the shape of an abstracted Kalikori. "I never expected someone like him to come up with something as wild as he did."
"Wild plans tend to be our thing. Maybe he made it just for us."
Sabine raised her eyebrows, keeping her focus on her mop. "I hope he knows what he's doing." She added the calligraphy brushstrokes on the top core piece of the Kalikori. "We should tell Saw about this. I'm sure he'd be glad to know we have additional forces on our side."
"Good idea." Ezra continued washing the tables. There was a break in the conversation.
"I think we should do one last thing for Hera," said Ezra. "You know, after all she's done for us."
"What did you have in mind?" Sabine replied.
"We've got some free time next week, so I thought we could clean the Ghost... make it nice for when she and the baby come."
Sabine didn't look forward to spending the entirety of a day cleaning, but it was true; the Ghost was filthy. She'd hate it, but she'd be willing to do it for Hera.
"Sure, that's a great idea. We'd just have to make sure we have the plan totally figured out beforehand." She dunked the mop in the bucket and washed her art away. "Let's talk to Saw when you're done."
A week had passed. Sabine, Zeb, and Ezra had spoken with Saw and Cham and had their plan ready to go. All they had to do was wait another week for their sentence to be lifted. As Ezra had suggested, the crew decided it was time to prepare for Hera's arrival and clean the Ghost. Ezra volunteered to take the cargo bay and galley, Zeb took the 'fresher and cockpit, and Sabine was left with the quarters and lounge. They all grabbed their materials and got to work.
Sabine pulled out her datapad and put on some energetic music to help her work. She started with her room, cleaning up any paint splatters on the floor or shelves, then dusted the furniture in the lounge. As she reached for a package of half-eaten grain chips sitting on an end table, she felt her boot step in something sticky. She looked down, and the floor was faintly stained a distinct shade of dark red-orange.
Is that... S'dakke wine? she thought. She hadn't seen anyone but Kanan drink it occasionally. She sighed, slid her boot off, and grabbed the mop from the closet.
After the lounge was finished, Sabine moved on to the baby's room. She checked the paintings on the walls to make sure the new sealant she had tested was working. She sprayed a cleaning product on the bunk bed and vacuumed the crevices between the padding. She glanced at the door frame that Hera painted, all done with a brush. The design showed up in Twi'leki folk art a lot, especially from the region in which Hera grew up. Out of curiosity, Sabine pulled out her datapad and played a few famous Rylothean folk tunes. She actually enjoyed them more than what she was listening to earlier. Finally, she mopped the floor and moved on to Hera's cabin.
Sabine had never seen the inside of Hera's cabin before. Compared to the other rooms, it was spotless. It looked like it had already been dusted and swept. She heard Chopper roll by, warbling and spinning his head.
"So that's what you were doing in here!" she replied.
There were a few more things that needed to be straightened up that would have been out of the astromech's reach. On a shelf beside Hera's bed, there was a printed square cloth on which her Kalikori and Kanan's mask lay, along with a few beads and a necklace. She wondered if Chopper bumped against or brushed something over it; the beads were scattered everywhere and the mask was crooked. She straightened everything and aligned the mask with the Kalikori, and laid the necklace and beads neatly in front.
She stepped back and admired the details on the Kalikori, wondering how long it had been in the Syndulla family. The symbols on each block were so precise they looked as if they were printed. She wondered what Hera would add to it; she knew it was traditional for a Twi'lek couple to do so when they were pregnant with their first child. She imagined it would be something to remember Kanan.
Sabine's gaze shifted to the wadded-up blankets on Hera's bed. She gathered them up in her arms, starting with the brown woven one Hera seemed to prefer. She always wore it around her shoulders when it was cold after Kanan died. Sabine put the blankets along with the pillowcase in the washing machine, and came back to mop the floor.
Underneath Hera's bed, there was a drawer that didn't seem to close all the way. Sabine had bumped it with the mop and tried to close it with her foot, but she spied a flat, gray box peeking out of the crack. She leaned the mop against the bed, knelt down to open it, and carefully lifted the box out of its drawer. It had an engraving on the lid, what looked to be a tailor's symbol.
Wait, she thought. Hera wouldn't want me to open this.
She looked at the box for a while, wondering desperately what was inside it. She put it back in the drawer and closed it all the way it would go, then continued mopping the floor. By the time she was finished, so were Ezra and Zeb. They met in the hallway outside the quarters, sharing their odd findings with each other. Chopper rolled up behind Ezra and chattered, his manipulators pointed above his head.
"Good idea, Chopper. Should we move the baby's bed into his room? Or do we think Hera's going to want it in hers?" Zeb asked the crew.
"I think she'd want it in hers," said Ezra. "Sabine, would you agree?"
"Yes. We talked while we were painting a few weeks back," she answered.
Zeb nodded. He and Ezra carried the bed over to Hera's quarters, and Sabine grabbed the clothing, the Lothcat plush, and the blanket she made. She arranged them neatly on the bed, nearly squealing over the Lothcat plush alone. She placed the clothes in one of her drawers and took one last look at the room as she left. Suddenly, it all felt real to her, as if she were becoming an aunt or a big sister again. She had no doubt that with the help of Saw and Cham, they would bring Hera home.
