A/N High all! I know my updates have gotten a little sporadic, thanks for being patient. Here is another chapter for you all to enjoy! Let me know what you think!
Toph came barging towards the healing hut like a hurricane but Katara was quick to head her off. "Toph you can't go in there right now; the healers are still working on him."
Toph huffed at this and responded in her trademark exasperated tone: "I told him not to do anything stupid and what does he do? He takes on a trebuchet shot to the chest!"
"Toph he was protecting Yianna, if he hadn't done what he did Yianna wouldn't have likely made it." Katara continued gently but Toph was already continuing to murmur to herself in frustration: "I bet his stance was off when he took that shot. Just means his earthbending needs more work…"
Abruptly, she turned on her heels and headed back to her room at the palace. "Let me know when the healers are done with him so I can knock the life back out of him myself."
Katara knew better though, she saw her eyes watering before she turned away from them, she needed time to process this all on her own and Katara was not about to stop her.
Yianna's Perspective:
Her eyes were closed, she was so tired, but she forced herself to stay awake. Why am I so tired? She was confused so she thought back to the last thing she remembered. I remember waking up this morning for our mission, I remember destroying trebuchet… Being attacked by other ships… Helping Fire Nation soldiers escape… Getting hit by a fire blast… and Aang…
At his name, her eyes shot open and she shot up in her bed, immediately calling for him. She couldn't find him as her eyes frantically adjusted to the lighting as she looked from cot to cot. She now knew she was in the healer's hut, but she still couldn't find Aang with her eyes. With worry starting to sink in, she began to try and get up from bed before hands gently pushed her back down.
Worry quickly turned to panic as she tried to fight them but the pain that was once dull in her back was now coming back in waves. "Where's Aang I need to get to him!" She nearly yelled out to the healer who just smiled at her.
With hands raised in a non-threatening way, we slowly gestured to the left of her: "Don't worry, he's behind this curtain right next to you." She started as she pulled the curtain aside to reveal the bandaged Avatar at her side. Yianna immediately breathed a sigh of relief at this, seeing that he was safe and the slight rise and fall of his chest as he was resting was enough to calm her down.
"Thank the gods." Yianna breathed out.
The healer continued once she knew that Yianna had calmed: "I have not called any visitors yet as I assumed you would like some time with him. I also wanted to wait for his strength to return enough for him to wake."
Yianna nodded in agreement with this, knowing that was the best choice at this point. "How long have we been out?" Yianna started, trying to sit up in the bed but failing miserably in her attempt to do so.
"It's only been a few hours since we finished working on your injuries, you'll need to stay here the night to be observed but you should be good for light activity in the morning." The healer finished.
Yianna scoffed a bit at this, knowing what "light activity" meant the following day for all water tribe warriors but she stayed silent. "How about Aang?"
The healer frowned a bit at this: "His injuries were a bit more… extensive. He hasn't woken up yet. Though I do have hope he will soon. His breathing has become less labored and he seems to be resting well at this point. Perhaps we will know more in the morning…" The healer finished.
Yianna did not like what she heard from the healer, there was a lot of uncertainty in her voice, though she tried to hide it well with a positive report. At this the healer pulled her back out of her thoughts as she bowed and spoke: "You will need to stay here for the night. Rest and we will check on your again early in the morning."
Yianna nodded in agreement, not intending on leaving Aang's side for a moment regardless. As she laid in silence just staring over at Aang's sleeping form, she realized that he had likely saved her life. The Avatar had pushed her to safety, ignoring what would happen to him entirely. It was in that moment that she realized that she would do everything in her power to protect him tomorrow.
She sat up in bed, ignoring the pain that was radiating off her back. Reaching out, she grabbed his hand in hers, he seemed to reflexively hold her hand back: "Why would you do something so stupid Aang…" She started: "You can't be risking your life for mine."
"You're wrong." Aang spoke, awake now: "It wasn't stupid, it was reflexive… I couldn't let anything happen to you."
Yianna stopped him there, pulling him into a hug. Aang grimaced: "Careful, I might break."
Yianna gently laid him back down, relieved that he was well enough to make jokes. He would be okay: "Never scare me like that again Aang."
"I'll try my best." Aang responded back. "What happened out there?" Aang started once he began to take in his surroundings more.
Yianna sighed at this: "It seems the commander of the fleet out there is okay with killing his own men to get to you."
Aang grimaced at this, knowing who would be willing to do such a thing to accomplish his goals: "There is no telling what Zhao is capable of. We need to be ready for tomorrow." Aang began to continue before grimacing and laying back down. "Maybe we can wait a few more minutes so I can catch my breath." Aang said before laying back down, albeit not so gracefully.
Yianna laughed at this: "Well you might as well get comfortable; we are stuck here till at least the morning. The healers would never let us hear the end of it if we left before they gave us a clean bill of health… and from the looks of it, you are far from that clean bill at this point."
Aang knew she was right but hated being able to do nothing none-the-less. "I guess we have no choice but to wait till morning then." Aang finished as he attempted to get more comfortable, fatigue already crashing over him from his efforts.
He was sound asleep only a few minutes later. As fatigue began to overtake Yianna, she smiled a little knowing Aang was safe beside her.
A/N: Hope you enjoyed this chapter! Interesting things to come for sure!
