Sam smiled when she saw Nigel. He looked so cute holding a picnic basket. A picnic for four…she forgot to tell Nigel about Jake and Rose coming. So, a picnic for four? Now she was confused. She walked up to Nigel.
"I'm sorry. I should've texted you." She said.
"What's wrong?" he asked.
"I forgot to tell you, I invited my sister and her boyfriend. I thought it would be fun to have a double date kind of thing…I forgot it was a picnic." Sam said.
"No worries, the more the merrier." Nigel said, subtly making the picnic basket disappear when Sam started looking around for her sister.
"I don't suppose you have a backup plan, I'm afraid I don't." Nigel said.
"Pizza?" Sam asked, "I know it's not romantic or anything but at least we get to spend time together. I don't want to waste your time though. If you want to do something else, we can-"
"Anytime spent with you, is never a waste of time. Pizza is fine lovely, don't try so hard." Nigel laughed.
Sam smiled. "I like it when you call me lovely…so don't stop doing it." She said.
"That's your name in my phone." Nigel confessed. "You are lovely."
Sam was tempted to kiss him, but she knew it wasn't the right time. She wanted it to be more private. More intimate. She wanted it to mean something this time. Suddenly she spotted Rose, she was happily chatting with Jake, holding hands. He laughed at something she said.
They looked like a regular, teenage couple. She wasn't showing yet, so you couldn't tell she was pregnant. Maybe their first kiss shouldn't be too intimate…just special. She couldn't help but feel there was some truth to what her dad said. She liked Nigel and he could talk her into doing anything if she wasn't careful. Nigel noticed her staring.
"What are you looking at?" he asked.
"There's my sister. She's the girl that looks just like me." Sam said pointing.
"You never mentioned you were a twin."
"I guess I forgot to tell you that. Let met guess, you see a carbon copy of me coming towards us." Sam sighed.
She had the smallest hint of hope that Nigel would be able to tell them apart. It is what it is. When you're a twin you learn to live with things.
"Not a carbon copy. She doesn't have your eyes. Or your smile, and she has the oddest tattoo. Shaped like a dragon." Nigel said.
"It's actually a birthmark." Sam told him.
"Interesting…" Nigel said.
"Let's go." She said pulling Nigel by the hand.
Rose saw Sam running towards them pulling Nigel along. "He doesn't know what he's in for." Rose laughed.
"Guys. This is Nigel. Nigel, this is my sister Rose, and she said you knew Jake." Sam said.
"We run in the same circle, yes." Nigel said.
"Nice to see you again Nigel." Jake said, grinning.
"You as well. Pleasure to meet you." Nigel said turning his attention to Rose.
"We decided to get some pizza. Are you okay with that Rose?" Sam asked.
"I can handle pizza." Rose said.
"I'm down." Jake said.
They walked to the pizzeria, where there wasn't a long wait thankfully. They had their pizza in ten minutes. The conversation was mostly Rose interrogating Nigel. Jake already had an opinion on him, but he couldn't speak for Rose. He could tell Nigel was sincere, and that he truly liked Sam.
"Any felonies?" Rose asked.
"No."
"Do you drink?" Rose asked.
"No."
"Do you smoke? That includes, vaping." Rose said.
"No."
Nigel sighed; he was tired of answering the what seemed endless stream of questions.
"Rose, can you do more than yes or no questions? It's getting boring." Sam said.
"Fine. What's your family like?" Rose asked.
Nigel froze. He hated talking about his family.
When he came to New York to study he was placed with a foster family. He didn't know where his actual parents were, ever since he could remember he'd lived with his grandmother who trained him until she passed away. Before she died, she referred him to a wizard master here in New York, but he had a one bedroom apartment and no room for Nigel. The only way for Nigel to stay here was for him to live with the only available foster parents at the time.
He wasn't allowed to tell them he was a sorcerer. So, they always took his staying out late to train as an act of rebellion, treating him like a delinquent. The other foster children in the house would only make it worse by playing mean pranks like saying he was going out to buy drugs, then planting drugs under his pillow. He couldn't wait for the day he finished his training. His plan was originally to go back to the UK to search for family there, but now he's met Sam. If he didn't believe in love at first sight before, he did now. He had a lot to think about. How to answer Rose's question was one of those things. He sighed and finally answered.
"I live with a foster family. It's not ideal but I get by." Nigel said smiling, to show he was okay.
"What happened to your parents?" Rose asked.
Even Jake looked interested, he didn't know this about Nigel.
"Well…I'm not exactly sure what happened to them. I was raised by my grandmother, when she died, I was sent here. I could've gone back to the UK to search for remaining family, but New York has been good to me." Nigel answered smiling at Sam.
"I like you; I feel like we're going to get along great!" Rose said.
"I'm so glad to hear you say that Rose! I told you, you'd like him!" Sam said.
"You did tell me." Rose said.
"How are the babies?" Sam asked changing the subject completely.
"We'll know more tomorrow. They've been pretty calm today thank goodness; it's been hell the last few days." Rose said.
"I have a question. Obviously, Rose probably knows…you know. Does Sam?" Nigel asked Jake, trying to get the dragon point across. Thankfully, Jake got the message.
"She knows I'm a dragon. She was with me and Rose when the oracles told us they would be twins." Jake said.
"Well as long as you know that, you should know I'm a wizard." Nigel said.
"Are you serious?" Sam said, she looked around the table. Everyone acted as if this was normal. Which for them it was.
She wasn't sure how she felt about dating a wizard or sorcerer or whatever he was. Was it dangerous? Could Nigel put spells on her? What were his powers? She was clueless and she didn't like the feeling.
"I am serious, though I prefer sorcerer. Wizard is so Harry Potter." Nigel said.
"Jake, is he lying?" Sam asked.
"No. He's a wizard. He helped me in a fight the other night actually."
"I wouldn't lie to you." Nigel said.
"Nice. I'm dating a wizard." Sam said sarcastically, she shook her head in disbelief.
"Sorcerer…or wizard. Whatever you like...lovely" Nigel corrected, finally picking up on Sam's distaste for his magical powers.
"Whatever you are. I wish you'd told me this." Sam said.
"There are rules Sam. He wasn't allowed to. He only told you once he found out he knew about the magical universe. Give him a break. Dating with magical powers is hard." Jake explained.
"Nigel…I like you. Is it okay if we end this date early? I need some time to think." Sam said. She wasn't feeling this date right now. She had to get away…and she knew just where to go.
"Of course. I understand it's a lot. Whatever you end up deciding, I'll always think you're lovely." Nigel said.
Sam felt awful hearing the hurt in his voice, but her feelings mattered too she thought as she left the pizzeria. Rose put a comforting hand on Nigel's arm.
"Give her time. She'll come around. She likes you." Rose said.
"I'm surprised she wasn't cool with it. She was cool with the pregnancy." Jake said.
"Maybe I shouldn't have told her so soon. She did say she wanted to take things slowly. She didn't even want to kiss after the first date." Nigel said.
"She knows Jake being a dragon used to put a strain on our relationship, and then we got back together, and we may have gotten a little too intimate…maybe she thinks dating someone magical will only lead to some kind of trouble. Even if it's worth it In the end." Rose said with her hand on her stomach.
"Are you two really happy?" Nigel asked.
"We are, but it's hard. Sam doesn't like hard." Rose said.
"You should go after her. I know Rose said to give her time, but I was always chasing Rose. The best part is you have magic. You don't even have to run after her, just teleport yourself to wherever she is." Jake said.
"Where is she?" Rose asked.
Nigel smiled. He knew exactly where she was. "I'll see you later" He said.
He looked around to make sure no one was watching and instantly teleported to the bench. In liberty park. He appeared next to his blonde beauty and put his arm around her, feeling hopeful when she didn't pull away. Nothing surprised Sam anymore, except for the fact Nigel actually cared enough to go after her.
"How'd you know I'd be here?" She asked.
"It's the place we first met. You were eating an ice cream. I saw you across the way and thought, well isn't she lovely? I had to say hi."
"Are you like Jake?" Sam asked.
"I'm a sorcerer- or wizard. Whatever you want to call it. I have magical powers, but we're not Jake and Rose. We're Nigel and Samantha. I can't promise you things will be perfect. No relationship is perfect. We're going to fight. We're going to kiss-hopefully sometime in the near future- and makeup. New York is my favorite place because of you. Please, give me the chance to prove we can make this work." Nigel pleaded.
"I don't want to get pregnant." Sam said.
"I'd prefer that not happen either. Your sister and Long might be happy, but I'm not ready for a child of my own. Even it has all of your lovely features." Nigel laughed.
"No sex?" She asked.
"I can agree to that." Nigel said.
"If there's a magical emergency will you leave me?" Sam asked.
"If it's an emergency and only if it's an emergency. Jake has more responsibilities than I do, but I'm still needed in dire situations from time to time."
"I can agree to that." Sam said smiling.
"You aren't going to put like, love spells or anything on me, are you?" Sam asked.
"Of course not. Not only is it against the rules, I would be taking advantage of my lovely Samantha." Nigel said.
"Anything else?" Nigel asked.
"Yeah. One more thing." Sam said.
"Whatever you want, lovely."
"Kiss me."
Sam rolled her eyes when Nigel kissed her cheek.
"On the lips please." She said.
"Finally, I've been wanting to do this since you looked up at me with those big blue eyes of yours." Nigel said and pulled her in for a kiss.
Sam returned the kiss nervously. She'd kissed boys before, but never ones she actually cared about. Mainly ones she was just seeing for a few minutes. Those kisses meant nothing. This kiss meant much more.
She pulled away and smiled.
"I really like you." She said.
"I promise, I'll never hurt you. I have a feeling if I do, I'll have your sister and Long to deal with." Nigel said.
"Yeah, and he's a dragon." Sam said.
"I know. I also know all of his weaknesses…flick him behind the left ear. See how he reacts." Nigel said.
"What? Why?" Sam asked.
"Just do it." Nigel laughed.
He kissed Sam again, and she ran her hands through his long red hair.
"My wizard." She whispered.
"Only you can call me that and get away with it." Nigel laughed.
"I happen to be a fan of Harry Potter." Sam said.
"There's no difference between a sorcerer and a wizard." Nigel said.
"Whatever…wizard."
"It's a good thing you're cute, and a good kisser." Nigel said, pulling her in for their third kiss to end the date.
A/N: Sorry this took so long, I had real life stuff to deal with. Don't you hate when that happens. The next few chapters will be Jake and Rose, a scene with Trixie and Rose that was cut earlier. I decided to give Nigel backstory, and I have a lot planned. Sorry if this seems rushed. I wanted to get something out but I think it didn't turn out half bad. Hope you like it. As usual I don't know how to end chapters...
