Chapter 24.
=Normal POV=
[November 13; Late Night]
[Hunter Ship; Sea]
Two days had passed since Hiccup revealed not one, but two stories to the dragon hunters on their sail to Hunter Isle. Hiccup told the hunters how he met Toothless, stopped the dragon war when he was fifteen, and what happened with Berk finding out about his powers. The only parts Hiccup left out of the second tale was that everything happened a week before what would have been his marriage to Astrid and that she left him the night before the wedding date. Also, Hiccup left out that his father was going to start his chieftain training after the honeymoon was over. Hiccup wasn't quite ready to reveal all that yet and had wanted to get on a happier subject before he got emotional. The last thing Hiccup wanted to do was accidentally hurt them.
The trip was going well; Viggo suspected they would reach their destination in another week given how the weather had been but also factoring if the wind was with them. The nights were still spent with ships locked together and everyone getting together in the middle of all four around a fire to talk, drink a little, and laugh. It was a fun time for Hiccup, and he never thought he could enjoy this with dragon hunters, but outside of the business they had, this group was just regular people who liked to relax after a long day. Hiccup had always wanted this kind of interaction with his tribe, or even only the riders, but it never happened. Hiccup was nervous about meeting the rest of the tribe when they reached their destination, but somehow, it wasn't as bad the closer they got, and the more time he got to hang out with the hunters.
Tonight was no different than the others; everyone was sitting together. It was about 11:00 pm right now, and Hiccup was laughing and smiling, but his mind wasn't entirely focused on all the jokes and talks. Hiccup's thoughts were on Toothless; it was hard not to think about him when Snoggletog was coming up, and Hiccup remembered their first holiday together. What was he going to do this year? Hiccup also considered that around this time is when he and the riders packed up and returned to Berk, then everything else happened to lead him where he was right now with the dragon hunters. Hiccup knew he was going to have to work hard to keep his emotions under control to prevent any issues with his powers.
"I love that Hiccup just spaces out and doesn't even realize it," One hunter laughed, then others did the same.
"I haven't spaced out, and I'm still listening even if I don't look like it." Hiccup remarked.
"Well, you weren't answering."
"Just staring into the fire,"
"There wasn't anything for me to answer," Hiccup stated.
"You sure about that? I was talking about you, so I'd say that usually means you're involved," Someone responded.
"You made a general statement out loud, wondering what else I can do with my powers. That means you were talking about me, not to me. And back on not having anything to comment on, I don't have an answer to give you as I've said before that I don't know what else I can do. I've spent the last almost seventeen years being forced to hide them." Hiccup reminded.
"Have you tried since leaving Berk to work with them?" Viggo asked.
"I tried and only got as far as what I did with your sword," Hiccup replied. "I was practicing on my own before I got captured three months after leaving Berk. It started with just trying to pick it up, then made it to doing that and being able to move it freely as if were an extension of my hand without physically touching it." He added.
"What about the dome forcefield thing you did when you protected Astrid?" A hunter questioned.
"That's what I attempted to work with first, but couldn't do it, so I tried something else." Hiccup said.
"That one could have a defensive power, and perhaps not accessible unless you're in danger or wanting to protect something. You said it activated when you wanted to keep Astrid safe and put your hands up out of instinct to stop the weapons from hitting you both." Ryker mentioned. "You wanted to protect her, and with your hands up to stop the attack, your powers manifested in a way to protect you and her with a barrier that made sure nothing hit the area your dome had covered."
"Maybe," Hiccup shrugged. "No way to test that unless you're gonna put me in some kind of danger," He chuckled.
"We could throw weapons at you?" One offered.
"And if I can't put the shield up, you end up killing me. Excuse my immense lack of faith in that idea," Hiccup rolled his eyes.
"Hiccup is right," Viggo agreed. "That instance was done out of fear and desire to protect the woman he loved, not himself. Hiccup hadn't been in any danger, and he put himself there to keep the girl safe. There's no way of knowing if the same could be done again for himself." He informed. "But we should try to find a way to find out what you're capable of doing, safely, and learning to control it as you did with the sword." He added, now looking at Hiccup.
"It would be beneficial to you," Ryker nodded.
"I know it would be good for me to learn what I can do…I guess I'm just scared to experiment. I did it before while island hopping with Toothless, but…That was just us. I don't want something to go wrong here and end up destroying anything or hurting you guys," Hiccup glanced down a bit.
"Don't you worry about us, Hiccup. We're not going to hold it against you when we're encouraging you to go for it. We expect things to be uncontrolled when you're first doing them. You're trying to learn what you can do, while also trying to control years of pent up energy. It's not going to be easy, and there are likely to be some failures and accidents, but that's what practice is for," Viggo put a hand on his shoulder.
"I'm sure you weren't perfect with the sword thing right away, but you got it now after some time." Ryker offered. "This will be the same. And you're not doing it alone, Hiccup. It's not just you and Toothless on some island with you trying something new, and then working with it. You've got us, and we'll help all we can,"
"But your first step is not being afraid to go for something you want," Viggo stated. "That's what you did with Toothless, right? You couldn't kill him; you wouldn't. Instead, you decided to let your curiosity take over, and you worked throughout the day to finally get close to Toothless and earn his trust when you gave your own. You took a chance, fear, or not. And you did fail a few times, but you eventually succeeded Hiccup." He continued.
"Aye, the same with creating the flying rig. You admitted there were a lot of fails but did it stop you?" Ryker pushed as Hiccup shook his head.
"No, but this could get you hurt-," Hiccup tried.
"I'm sure you and Toothless got yourselves hurt in all those test runs during crashes, but you kept going until you got it right, and now you can proudly say that you built a working dragon prosthetic and mastered flying that dragon if it had both tail fins. Did Toothless ever resent you for all the crashing?" Viggo wondered.
"Eh…Maybe got annoyed, but understood I was doing my best," Hiccup shrugged.
"And that's all you can do here, Hiccup. It's just trying new things until you get it, and then practicing until you master it." Ryker encouraged. "We want to help, so don't be scared. Everything you do in life is new one time,"
"Okay, okay…I guess we can try to find out what else I can do and work with it…" Hiccup gave in. The hunters cheered. "But we start tomorrow. It's late, and I'm tired," He added.
"Of course," Viggo nodded. "We should all be winding down for the night anyway. You go on ahead, Hiccup. We'll catch up once things are set for the evening."
"Okay," Hiccup nodded to him as he got up. Others began to do the same in rising to their feet and getting things put where they belonged. After that, it would be separating the ships from one to four with the crew split up among them. Hiccup stretched his arms and yawned before turning to make his way to the chamber tiredly. "Night, guys, and the few ladies,"
"Goodnight, Hiccup!" The hunters called back together. Hiccup only laughed a little, shaking his head before continuing towards up the stairs to the second level. While walking and there was a brief moment of silence, the sound of a roar reached his ears, and Hiccup stopped midstep and looked around. No one else looked up in confusion or curiosity; they were just going about normal duties for the end of the night. Hiccup shook it off and started walking again, but not more than three steps in, and he heard another roar again.
Hiccup knew it shouldn't shock him with dragons roaming around freely, and it had been quiet all night, not a dragon in sight. What made Hiccup stop was the type of roar because it sounded like a Night Fury's. Hiccup gave it a second but heard nothing. It's not him, Hiccup…You know he's gone. You just miss him so much that you want to believe it's him. Hiccup told himself as he sighed and closed his eyes to keep walking. Just as Hiccup made it to the top of the staircase, the roar hit his ears again. Hiccup turned around quickly to look around.
"Something wrong, Hiccup?" Hauk asked. Hiccup didn't respond right away. "Uh, lad?" Hauk tried again.
"Ssh," Hiccup said, trying to listen for the sound again while making his way down the stairs and standing on the last one where Viggo and Ryker approached to ask what was going on. Hiccup knew roars like what he heard three times now were used as distress calls, a dragon trying to get help. Come on…Do it again… Hiccup thought as he closed his eyes to drown out the sound of everything else and only focus on the roar if it came through. After a minute or two, there was nothing as Hiccup shook his head; he was getting his hopes up for nothing. "Sorry, I thought I heard something…"
"Heard what?" Ryker questioned.
Hiccup prepared to turn and continue his path to the chamber. "It's…Nothing. I just…Thought I heard something," Hiccup waved it off like nothing big.
"You seemed pretty focused. Are you sure it was nothing?" Viggo inquired.
Hiccup nodded at them. "I…Heard something, but I think it's just my mind playing tricks on me because I miss my dragon…" Hiccup admitted gently.
"Why would you think that? What did you hear?" Ryker arched a brow.
Hiccup closed his eyes and got ready to head back up the stairs. "Maybe I'm going crazy, or overtired…But I could have sworn I heard a dragon roaring and sounded like-," Hiccup stopped his ascent up as soon as the sound hit his ears again, and his eyes widened, and he whipped around. "Toothless…" He whispered.
"You're…Probably just tired, Hiccup. Go on to bed; we're coming too," Viggo stated.
"No. No, I heard this roar four times. It's the same one…" Hiccup got off the stairs and continued looking out into the darkness. "It's a dragon distress call…"
"It's probably hurt and in the water, or on a nearby island," Ryker tried.
"I know why the call is given…It's…The type of dragon call I hear…" Hiccup looked shocked and scared as Viggo and Ryker stared at him while he was looking around. "It's a Night Fury roar…"
"But you didn't say that, Hiccup. You said it sounded like Toothless. You think it's him, don't you?" Viggo questioned.
"It has to be him." Hiccup said.
"Hiccup, be reasonable. You admitted just now that your mind was playing tricks on you because you miss Toothless." Ryker reminded.
"It's him." Hiccup glared at them as they backed up a few spaces from the angry teenager.
"Hiccup, do you hear yourself? Toothless has been gone since June when we found you in the water. Aside from some wreckage, there were no people and no dragons to be seen. It's been five months, and even you said that he's gone…" Viggo attempted to get Hiccup to calm down. Hiccup finally faced them with narrowed eyes, and his hands balled to fists at his sides.
"IT'S HIM! Okay? I know it's him. I told you that you wouldn't understand how it works unless you felt what a bond is with a dragon." Hiccup snapped. "I know how long it's been, and I know what I said…But I also told you that it was easier to believe Toothless was gone than hold onto the hope he was alive…UNLESS, there was proof to show me that. And I said that if he were alive, I'd search to the ends of Midgard to find him." He reminded firmly. "I know this roar belongs to a Night Fury. I know my bonded dragon. I know my best friend. I know that the dragon I hear calling out for help is Toothless." Viggo and Ryker continued to stare at him in shock and disbelief.
"Hiccup…We want to believe you, but how can you be sure? What proof do you have after all this time that this particular dragon roaring out is Toothless?" Ryker asked.
"I feel our bond, the one that showed me what complete feels like…" Hiccup relaxed a little but didn't lose his determination. "I couldn't feel it before, and maybe that's just because I had so much going on, and I was miserable…I felt alone and empty. But I don't feel any of that right now. Toothless is the piece of me that was missing before we bonded…The part of me I didn't know I was missing. And I feel that part now. I know it's Toothless. I can feel it. I can feel him." He informed.
Viggo sighed before looking back at Hiccup. "I don't want to see you get your hopes up and learn you were wrong and it crushes you,"
"Please…I'll take Cinder and go search without holding up your return home and I can catch up…Just please let me find him? I don't want to miss this chance…I can't…Please?" Hiccup begged.
"Are you of absolute certainty that it's Toothless? Without an ounce of doubt in your heart or mind, you're positive that roar is Toothless?" Viggo stared into Hiccup's eyes.
"All I've ever known is my bond with Toothless. Nothing else as ever made sense until the day Toothless and I bonded. It's the only thing I have complete faith in and would never question…I've never been more sure of anything in my entire life, Viggo," Hiccup affirmed.
"Well then, you have our full support and help in your endeavor," Hiccup's eyes widened a little at Viggo's words, seeing him smile.
"I suggest you locate your best friend so that we can retrieve him and get you two reunited," Ryker agreed smiling as well.
Hiccup instantly stepped in and hugged both of them, or at least the best he could. Viggo and Ryker blinked in surprise. "Thank you," Hiccup said on the verge of tears.
"You're welcome," Ryker and Viggo said, both using their outer arm to hug Hiccup back. Afterward, Hiccup let them go.
"Now, how do we find a black dragon at night?" Ryker inquired.
"The only way Toothless and I use to find each other when we're separated but in hearing range…If I can hear him, he can hear me." Hiccup informed. "Have everyone keep quiet?" Viggo brought his hand up as the people on the boats fell silent. Hiccup took a deep breath before cupping his hands over his mouth and letting out a roar that sounded like a Night Fury's.
"I didn't know he could do that," Ryker said in surprise.
"Hiccup is a man of mystery, brother," Viggo reminded with a chuckle.
"Ssh," Hiccup hushed them, he needed to be able to hear. After another moment, Hiccup repeated the call, louder than the first, and waited. "Come on," He whispered, closing his eyes and praying. "Come on…" Then in silence, a roar like the one Hiccup gave was heard by everyone. Hiccup's eyes snapped open as tears formed, but he didn't let them fall. Hiccup roared again, and call back came immediately after. Hiccup knew it was Toothless; it had to be. Hiccup could hear him, but not see him, so he needed an idea for that.
Hiccup tapped his chin a few times, then stopped while looking at his hand. "Duh, why didn't I think of that before…" He opened his palm up and what appeared to be a mostly white ball of energy that moved like flames did appear there. "TOOTHLESS, IF YOU CAN HEAR ME, SHOW ME WHERE YOU ARE!" Hiccup released his blast, sending it in the air. "DISTRESS SIGNAL!" Hiccup's energy hit a certain point and burst out in the form of a circular wave. The blast Hiccup fired eventually faded, and as soon as the flame was out, a purple blast shot into the sky and then dispersed apart in waves. Hiccup could have cried but found himself smiling. "I'm coming, bud!" Hiccup called.
As if on cue that Hiccup was going to call him, Cinder came into sight flamed up, but let it die down for Hiccup to jump over the railing of the ship and onto his neck. "Should we come too?" Viggo asked.
"No, I'll grab him and return to the ship. I don't know what kind of shape he'll be in…It's been months since I last saw him…" Hiccup said, worried about the state of his friend.
"What can we do for you from here?" Ryker questioned.
"Just get a spot clear on deck for him, and maybe have the healers at the ready with whatever supplies they can spare? I also advise all weapons to get hidden or put away…" Hiccup said.
"Understood. Be safe," Viggo nodded.
"Mostly safe all the time," Hiccup replied before he directed Cinder off in the direction Toothless's blast went up in.
. . .
Viggo and Ryker got everything ready for Hiccup to arrive with Toothless, and it had been about twenty minutes since Hiccup took off with Cinder to find his dragon.
"You know with Toothless back; he'll probably want to leave us," Ryker mentioned.
"You don't know that for sure, but regardless, it is his decision, and we must respect that." Viggo reminded.
"Viggo, he'd only stayed with us because he had nowhere else to go. You heard him; he rather stay here or die on some random island. He's got his dragon now," Ryker remarked.
"That doesn't mean we'll just be forgotten. We have Hiccup's trust and friendship, Ryker, and we know that Hiccup is not one for abandoning people, given what he went through with Berk. He still has nowhere to go; he just has his best friend back." Viggo explained. Before anything else could be said, Cinder flew over the connected ships and carefully lowered an unconscious Night Fury to the deck. Hiccup rubbed Cinder's neck, earning a light growl.
"Thanks, boy…" Hiccup gave him a light squeeze before Cinder lowered his head enough to let Hiccup slide off and land on the deck. "You still gonna follow us?" Cinder nodded. "Alright," Hiccup replied as Cinder headed off. Hiccup instantly went to Toothless's side to check over him.
"Is he okay, Hiccup?" Ryker wondered.
"I don't know yet..." Hiccup said, still scanning over Toothless's body. Hiccup could see a lot of old scars he knew about, then some from their time captive on Johann's ship. Other injuries may have been sustained during their time apart, but overall, it looked like there wasn't anything open to be concerned about right now. Sighing with relief, Hiccup closed his eyes. "I think he's okay, physically. Maybe just exhausted, probably hungry too…I found him on a beach of an island a bit more West from here; he was unconscious when Cinder landed. We just grabbed him and returned here…" He revealed.
"We'll make sure there's a good portion of fish waiting for him in the morning," Hauk promised.
"Thanks," Hiccup replied softly, unable to take his eyes off his friend.
"Are you alright?" Viggo asked.
Hiccup was just beside himself that of all things to happen tonight; he found Toothless. His best friend was alive and here with him now. Hiccup teared up and didn't bother to stop them from falling down his cheeks. Hiccup was doing precisely what he said he would do; he'd make sure Toothless was okay first, and then he'd just cry at the overwhelming feeling of relief and joy to have his friend back.
"I think we should just give him a little time," Olga offered softly. Viggo and Ryker got the hint, so did the other men.
It was best just to leave Hiccup alone right now and let him have his moment with Toothless. Everyone backed off and left the whimpering teenager be, as they all dispersed Viggo, and Ryker noticed that Hiccup curled himself up against his friend while still crying and sniffling, but his eyes were closed. It wasn't much longer after that when Hiccup fell asleep there. The obvious choice was to leave Hiccup with Toothless because if either woke up away from the other, it wouldn't be good. Instead, Viggo just placed a warm blanket over Hiccup, and then they retired to their room for the evening. The night crew went about their duties until the next switch, and the night was peaceful.
