Author's Note:
When you get to where Flynn, Rapunzel and I start cooking up lunch, cue the special order music from "Ratatouille."
Now, onto Flynn's turn.
"Calamari à l'orange?" I asked. "That's not an actual recipe."
"It is for the time being." said Nathan. "Now, you're in charge of frying the calamari and making the sauce. Rapunzel, you're in charge of making the buttermilk biscuits. I'll take care of the lemon meringue pie."
"Uh, could we make something else instead?" asked Rapunzel. "Jennifer and Amanda are already making the biscuits."
Upon seeing that they were, I said. "Hey, whatever floats your boat, sunshine."
"OK, let's get to it!" said Nathan.
So, we went straight to work.
While the calamari was frying, I looked at the recipe for the à l'orange sauce, which, come to think of it, looks bland to make, especially with the oranges mixed into it.
Thinking it could use a little bit more kick, I passed by each station the other chefs were working on, saying. "Now, let me see. I'll take a little bit of these and a little bit of those, some of these, some of those...oh...and a whole lot of this."
"Doesn't anyone say please or thank you anymore?" asked Jenny, another one of the newer chefs-in-training, who, along with Serene, Larry and Curly, looked at Moe, who slapped the latter two and snapped. "Quit your eyeing and get back to work!"
Having collected the spices and other useful things, I started working on the à l'orange sauce my way, aside from zesting the oranges and squeezing out the juice.
During my progress, I spotted Pascal frowning at me, for those that I've gathered for the sauce are not in the recipe, which he pointed at.
"You saw nothing!" I said to him, then went back to work.
"Three minutes and counting!" Gru called out.
"Troo sacwad yee codjeu!" repeated Kevin.
As Nathan and Rapunzel pulled the lemon meringue pie and scones out of the oven, Pascal came squealing to them.
"What is it, Pascal?" asked Rapunzel.
Pascal acted out as me, waving his hands like I was doing something, which, in this case, he was.
Rapunzel and Nathan looked at each other as Gru called out. "Two minutes and counting!"
"Dul sacwad yee codjeu!" repeated Kevin.
"Here, take this out, will ya?" Nathan asked Rapunzel, handing her his pie.
While she and the other chefs hurried out to the classroom with their prepared choices of food, I was about to pour the à l'orange sauce on top of the calamari when Nathan came up, asking. "What are you doing?!"
"What does it look like I'm doing?" I asked back. "I was just about to put the sauce on the calamari."
"Then what's with all these?" asked Nathan, pointing at the ingredients that were not added into the recipe.
"Well, I thought I could spice it up a bit and..."
"...cost us the challenge by not following the recipe?" Nathan guessed, cutting me off.
I was about to protest, but when I heard Gru say...
"One minute and..."
"Coming!" I called out, quickly dumping the sauce into the calamari, to Nathan's shock, and hurrying out into the classroom.
"Oh, we're doomed." Nathan moaned to himself.
Nathan: As the JobTrain staff went from table to table filling their plates, Gothel smugly walked up to our table.
"I would say it's been a pleasure having you two here, but..." she said to me and Flynn while snatching away the plate with the calamari with a sinister chuckle. "That would be a lie."
But before she could try the calamari, Sharon Williams, the executive director of JobTrain, came up to her, saying. "Now, don't be so selfish, Gothel. There's plenty of calamari for everyone.
"In fact," she went on, scooping more calamari onto her plate. "I just got a craving for more of that tangy à l'orange sauce."
Soon, the rest of the staff gathered around, plucking the rest of the calamari out of the plate Gothel was holding.
She even tried one of them herself, and to her shock, it was actually quite good.
"No! It can't be." she gasped in horror and realization, watching everyone enjoying what's left of the calamari and Flynn wrapping his shoulder around my arm, asking. "Guess you did the right thing putting me in charge of the calamari, huh, Nate?"
As I looked at him, I smiled, not only because our dish was a surprising success, but also for the fact that Rapunzel is now free to go wherever she wants outside of JobTrain.
