To be honest, I was so glad the school day was finally over that I didn't really register what dad and skills were talking about. It looked serious but I at that moment didn't want to pay attention to it. I started walking towards dad's office to wait for him there. Unfortunately, i didn't even make it out of the gym yet or I noticed someone was walking next to me.
I looked up while thinking it was Liam since I kind of had been avoiding him today but to my luck, it was the lovely Brett. It felt like it wasn't my day.
"Whats up Mell? Have you been thinking about our conversation today?" Brett asked.
"Ohh which conversation was that again? to be honest, today has been a blur." I said being sarcastic with a bit of honestly in it.
I just don't want to deal with this now.
"Well I hope you remembered, the golden girl. Since I think I know your little secret." Brett replied
"Ohh again Brett, Which secret may that be? That I am dutch? That I can speak more languages then you while even being dyslectic. Well done you figured it out". I said sarcastically.
"Ohh what your dyslectic, well that wasn't the secret I am talking about but he thanks for letting me know," Brett said with a smile.
Fuck, wait did I really say that. Shit! That wasn't supposed to happen. No sleep really can do weird stuff with your brain. I needed to keep my head cool. He is just playing mind games since he has some troubles himself he just doesn't wanna deal with.
"Okay Brett, stop what is it that you want and just tell me and let me be on my way home again alright?" I replied
"Well, since you asked," He said with a smile
I didn't like where this was going but decided to pay attention since there is always a hidden meaning behind words. At least that is what my uncle Bass told me when I first got bullied in The Netherlands. To say at least this isn't my first rodeo.
"I want you to quit the basketball team. Just say that it isn't a girl's sport and leave it to the boys alright?"
"Wait, hahaha. I just started laughing. Well hell no. This is my sport too. If you wanna have it, you not going to get it. Not without a fight." I said
Brett looked like he was about to explode. He looked at me and grabbed my sports jacket I was still wearing. "You listen bitch, this isn't a girls team and this is my team. Nobody is going to take a point away from me with the scouts. You better be careful."
"Is this a threat Brett?" I asked
We both heard the sound of the gym doors opening and Brett quickly let me go. The rest of the team including Liam walked in.
Brett's best friend came up to him and started chatting while I was standing there with a bit of a surprised look on my face.
Liam walked towards me. "Okay, so what was that?"
"Uhh, just your usual cool guy in high school being a dick I guess."
"Well that's not what it looked like to me," Liam responded
"Well, how did it looked to you?" I asked
"It looked like he was treating you with something? What's going on mell. First of all, you have been acting weird all day and now Brett has been acting aggressively to you? Just talk to me please."
"Okay, well to be fair with you. Brett has been treating me. He wants me out of the team but I don't care. It's also my sport so I won't quit because someone isn't being nice, to say the least. So I just told him that. Just let him be alright. He is just a big jerk to say it softly." I told Liam
"Alright, I will leave it for now since you are asking but if I see something like that again I will have a serious talk with you and our coaches. This is not normal Mell." Liam told me
"I know but I just had a shitty day and I don't want to deal with it now alright. I will promise to you when it happens again that I will tell you and that I will tell the coaches. Deal?"
"Deal, alright I should head home. Do you wanna have a ride with me?" Liam asked.
" I would love to but my dad had already offered me a ride this morning. I should probably ride with him. Can I ride with you tomorrow?"
"Yeah always, you know that. Alright, see you tomorrow right?"
"Always, I said" while giving Liam a goodbye kiss.
Liam walked off and I continued my walk towards dad's office.
I don't know what it was but before I opened the door I knew something was off. It just didn't seem right. I opened the door to see something sitting on Dad's desk. It was a letter with a bottle of pills it seems next to it. I walked closer to it and read the name on the letter. It was addressed to me. WTF. I grabbed the letter and put it together with the bottle of pills in my backpack. Who would put this on Dad's desk? Nobody in the school except for Hailey and the principle knows we are related.
A few minutes later dad came into his office. Are you ready to go home? he asked.
"Yess to be honest, I was ready to go home the minute I entered the school today. Let's just say it has been a long day."
"Well that doesn't sound to go does it now. Wanna talk about it in the car?" Dad replied
"No, thanks I am fine. Maybe tomorrow. I just wanna sleep in the car and the rest of the day if that's possible."
"Uhh, the car ride is possible but did you forget that we have diner at Hailey and Nathans house today?"
"Ohh shit I totally forgot. Can't we just do it tomorrow?"
"No, not really, mell. We cant cancel the last minute. Just sleep a bit in the car and see how you feel later on alright?"
I slept the whole car ride back home. Dad gently woke me up and I half awake walked toward the couch in the living room and continue to sleep there until it was time to go to the diner at Nathans and Hailey's place.
Dinner was nothing special. Just our normally happy, cheery Jamie who could not resist hugging me on arrival and asking to play basketball with me. Which of course I couldn't refuse. Dinner itself was uneventful. I was just deading to go to sleep tonight again. Since last night was so terrible.
Back home in my own bed after dinner. I couldn't sleep very well today but at least I fell asleep this time. Not that that was any better. My dreams were filled with images of that night and when the morning came again. I woke up covered in sweat. Well, this is great I thought. Even though I did get some sleep it still doesn't felt like I got enough. At least I can now have a relatively normal day now.
I walked downstairs towards the kitchen where mum was making breakfast. We didn't really talk much since that night. Yesterday was filled with activities and after dinner, I went straight towards my room and fell asleep.
"Good morning Mell, how are you doing?" she asked.
"exactly not too bad, how are you?" I replied
"Not too bad either, you sure you okay sweety? you look tired and to be frank with you I did hear a lot of noises tonight from your room. You sure you are alright?"
I tried to hide what was going on with me since I don't want mum to be troubled with this too. "Yeah I am alright, just some nightmare but I can handle it."
"Alright, I trust you. Just know that we are always here for you when or if you wanna talk." Mum replied
"Thanks, mum, that means a lot to me.
Dad walked in and gave mum a kiss while she was still making the eggs.
Today already looked way better than tomorrow but how wrong could I have been.
