Chapter nineteen
Matt had been awake for a while, just starring at the bedroom's ceiling. He hadn't been able to sleep very well that night, trying not to think too much about the speech that was taking place today.
This speech would be ending his alderman time, and even though he was sure this was what was best for his family but also for himself. He just didn't like the idea that he was letting down so many people. He was also aware that Gabby wouldn't mind if he decided to keep his job but he wouldn't just change his mind now. This political job had been putting his life at risk, putting his family in the harms way and he would never put Gabby and Louie in anymore danger.
He turned his head to the side, looking at his beautiful wife. Looking at her, he was sure it was the right decision. That was what Gabby brought to him, this confidence, the certainty that everything would be okay. And of course he knew that no matter what, they would face the troubles and problems together.
Gently, Matt turned to his side toward Gabby and looked at her. She was the most beautiful human being he's ever seen, and he felt genuinely the luckiest man on earth. He loved her with his entire being, more than ever. His wife was definitely the cutest and most sexy woman he ever met, but she also was such a badass and a strong woman. He was proud of her, proud of her independence and he strong-headedness.
"Be quiet" Gabby suddenly mumbled, her eyes still closed, making her husband jumped.
"You're awake? Of course you are" he mumbled with a smirk, rolling his eyes knowing his wife was judging him for being awake and spinning out.
"You woke me up by thinking so hard" she whispered her eyes closed but a smile on her face.
"You know what woke me up?" Matt whispered back.
"Huh?"
"You! You are snoring!" He shot back, as Gabby's eyes shot opened.
"I do not snore! You idiot" She said hitting his chest.
"You do! You snore like a mother-trucker!" he said laughing as Gabby sat in bed a starting smacking his head with her pillow.
"You're such an idiot Matt Casey!" she said laughing as well. Matt took the pillow from her, and pushed Gabby to lay back down.
"Am just kidding baby" he said steeling a kiss. Gabby smiled and caressed the back of his neck.
"Tell me what's bothering you baby?" She asked then as Casey sighed looking down to his hands.
"The speech…" he replied.
Gabby nodded and caressed his cheek "You're having second thoughts?" she asked, worried about him.
"About having a baby? Definitely not" he said changing the subject.
Gabby shook her head, not ready to mess with him and joke around right now "Matt am serious"
"So am I" he whispered getting on top of her and kissing her neck. Gabby tried not to focus on the fact he was not willing to actually talk about it, and of course feeling his lips over her skin was driving her crazy. It had been a long time, and she wasn't sure she would have a lot of will to make a stop to what he was doing but she knew she had to.
Gently she pushed his chest, making him pull back and look at her. "Babe please" she said gently.
Matt finally nodded knowing she wouldn't just drop it "Am not having second thoughts about politics, I just feel like I didn't do enough for people but I also don't want you and Louie to ever be put in this position ever again"
Gabby smiled. She knew her husband was a good man, and she loved his heart. "You know you don't have to make a decision for me or Louie, I want you to do what feels right for you my love" She said caressing his face as he nodded.
"It's time Gabby, I need it to stop, I just don't want people to feel like I am just giving up on them" he explained, really aware that his wife knew how he felt.
Gabby nodded, seeing that Matt just fell in some silence, probably still spinning out. "Do you want me to come with you?" she asked breaking the silence that had settled between them.
"No it's okay, I'd rather have you stay here with Louie. I don't really want you to be exposed to any kind of media" he said earning a confused look from the brown woman.
"Where is this coming from?" she asked then.
"I… Being in the public eyes is not an easy… thing. And being in politics I knew what would happen, I don't want you to be more involved in politics than you already are… I-I didn't tell you but when the entire thing went down with Deering, I've been receiving so many phone calls from journalists, so reporters have been digging on me and the situation, I also got home a couple times to reporters waiting outside the house… And I realized that this is not something I want… I mean… When you're always followed and when people just see you as a famous person or a public figure, they want all the answers to all their questions, and they don't care if they are stepping out of line, they are just invading your personal space and are digging on your personal life, and I have been dreading the moment it would happen to me, and it's something I need to protect you and Louie from"
Gabby was speechless she never even imagined that this was happening while she had been staying with Antonio and she felt bad knowing that she had not been here with Matt to face it. Also she was kind of glad that she didn't experiment this because it was really nerve-wracking and bringing some anxiety to her.
At first she had helped her husband getting into politics, working with him for his run for alderman. They had been interviewed a few times, some people would take pictures of them but it was okay, and then quickly, she took a step back from politics when Louie came into their lives. But Matt was always the exposed one. And even if she was aware of this side of his job, she preferred ignore it.
"If you want me to be there I can come, it doesn't matter what people think, or what the reporters want asked if you need me to be there to support you then I will baby" she replied then after letting everything sink in.
"I just want everything to be over, and I want you to stay home when I know you're safe, with our son, taking care of yourself, the cameras paparazzi and kind of bad influence." He said firmly but also very grateful that his amazing wife was willing to put herself out there if he needed her.
"fine I'll be staying home waiting for you and listening to you on the TV, and then we can do something nice just you and me and our little boy, what do you say?" She suggested earning a gentle smile from Matt.
"Sounds perfect!" he exclaimed planting a loving kiss to her lips. "So how about we talk about being committed to create the most beautiful baby?" he whispered kissing Gabby's neck, ready to enjoy so intimate time with his wife, even knowing they couldn't make love just yet.
Later Casey was in the bedroom getting ready for his speech. He was putting one of his suits when Gabby walked in with Louie who was barely waking up. Matt smiled at the sight of his family.
"Hey you" he exclaimed tying his tie around his neck.
"Daddy you're again wearing a penguin outfit!" Louie said chuckling in his mommy's arms. "You look like a charming prince" he added with a smile.
"Does that mean mommy is my princess?" Matt asked kissing the little boy forehead.
"I guess so!" Louie replied with a grin.
Gabby and Matt shared a look, both chuckling at Louie. "I should go, I'll see you later, and we can spend a nice day in, how about that?" he said.
"Yeah, we can watch some movies, and we order some Thai food?" Gabby suggested as it was her favorite and knowing Matt wouldn't say no to this offer.
"Whatever you want baby!" Matt replied kissing her lips.
"Yuk" Louie exclaimed hiding his eyes in his hands, not wanting to see the kiss his parents were sharing.
Gabby laughed after pulling away, and putting her son on the ground "Okay little trouble maker, go to the table and finish your bowl of cereal" she said as Louie ran off.
"Kid's got some energy today" Matt said getting a bit closer.
Gabby pulled on Matt's tie and gently kissed him again "I've got some energy as well" she whispered letting her hands run down his body.
Matt groaned a bit, enjoying Gabby's touch. "How I wish you didn't have to take it easy" he mumbled.
"We could have sex if you actually grew some balls" She chuckled.
Matt rolled his eyes knowing he was mostly responsible for their no sex situation right now "You're going to regret this!" he said ready to kiss his girl again when Louie called out for his mommy. The two adults realized it was time to get back out there, and for Matt to actually go to the meeting.
Gabby was sitting on the couch, resting, and watching tv waiting for Matt's speech to start. She felt a bit nervous for him, as he had been nervous, she didn't want him to recent her someday if he changed his mind.
She looked at Louie who was drawing on the coffee table, sitting on the ground. "Mommy when can we go to the firehouse?" He asked gently looking up at his mother.
"Well, daddy is going back to work next week, and I'll see my doctor next week as well maybe he'll allow me to get back to work as well." Gabby explained knowing she was still stuck at home for a while.
"I want to see the firehouse" Louie said then getting a nod from his mother.
"I know baby, I am sure we can go next week, is that okay?" She asked as Louie smiled excited to finally go back to 51. Suddenly she heard the front door opened.
She strengthened up, a bit surprised but she relaxed when she saw who it was. "Hey Dawson! It's just me, your favorite Bachelor"
"Severide! You scared me! What are you doing here?" she asked as he walked in the living room, sitting in one of the armchair.
"Uncle Kelly!" Louie yelled standing up and walking to Kelly. The older man took the little boy in his arms and sat him in his laps.
"Hey my favorite heart-breaker!" Kelly said excited ignoring Gabby's previous question.
"Mama said I can come to the firehouse soon!" He exclaimed so happy.
"Yeah? That's amazing!" Kelly smiled.
Gabby cleared her throat, getting Kelly's attention "What are you doing here Severide?" she asked again.
"I wanted to see you guys" he said.
"Casey is not here you know? He's at his speech"
"Oh I know that, I just thought you might need some company while waiting for your hubby to get home"
Gabby rolled her eyes, but smiled grateful that her friend was here. "Thanks for coming"
"Of course! So how was he before leaving?" Kelly wondered, knowing they were both a bit stressed.
"Nervous, but I think he made up his mind, and I don't think he can spend more time being an alderman, I think he is doing the right thing" Gabby explained.
She was proud of her husband, she had seen him so involved and worried about everybody and that made her so proud of him. He had given a lot for the citizen of Chicago, and she knew that deep down he loved doing it, helping people, and doing the right things. But she also knew that it was a job that took him a lot of time, and he wasn't willing to miss more time with his family.
She had followed everything that Matt had done, but after getting Louie she took a step back from it knowing that she needed to take care of her son, make sure that he had everything he needed and obviously protect him from bad influence. But she was proud that Matt kept doing this job, kept helping people, and always stayed true to himself. That was the most important thing, starting in politics Matt didn't want to change, he didn't want to be like every other politician, he wanted to make a difference and he did.
"Matt is doing the right thing for sure, and he loves you both so much he really wants to protect you"
"Yeah I know and we love him so much too, I just feel a little bit bad… Cause I know he is quitting for us"
Kelly nodded, and looked at the tv where Matt was finally going to talk. "And we are here today to listen at Alderman Casey." A journalist said.
"Hello everybody, I've been meaning to talk for a while, and now is the right time. Some of you might be aware that I have been dealing with some threats from Aldermen Deering, it's been a difficult time for myself but also for my family. Now I am very grateful for the Chicago police department, they were able to prove what he did, and finally take him down. He's been working for years now with so many bad people, trying to make the most money out of it. Last vote, he asked me to join him by voting for something that didn't feel right to me. I didn't know what to do and it put my family in a lot of danger. My wife and child got in a car accident, they were sent to the hospital, and a lot more problems came out from this situation. I've been doing this job to help people and to make a difference, but I also realize that It can cost you a lot, and it could've cost me a lot more than what actually happened. I haven't been able to do my job properly as an alderman, but also a firefighter and most importantly as a husband and father. I was not able to protect my family as I should've been… I love helping people I do it every single day, and I'm so grateful that I was able to do it with my voice, and proving to everybody that not all politicians are bad people, now I need to focus more on what really matters to me, and most importantly I need to be able to be a good father and husband and protect the one I love the most which is why I came to the decision to step down as Alderman." Matt finished looking straight at the camera.
Gabby smiled, feeling a lot of love for this perfect man. He was genuinely the most caring and sweet man she ever met, she was proud to be his wife. And she couldn't wait for him to get home.
"One loving man you found for yourself" Kelly said after hearing his best friend's speech.
"Yeah, he is amazing, lucky me" Gabby answered smiling.
"Can I ask you something?" Kelly asked then.
"Sure"
Kelly scratched the back of his neck, feeling a bit nervous. "How… Casey asked you to marry him like twice and… And then you got married…. But how… How could you be so sure that it would work out?" Kelly asked.
Gabby looked at her friend confused by his question "You know… I fell in love with him the minute I met him, and I've dreamt about the moment I'd get lucky enough to be with him, but Hallie was here… And she was… well… She was Hallie… Matt loved her so much, and then she died, and Matt didn't know how to deal with that, and I wasn't sure about what was right for him, but in the end, our time happened and… And I fell in love with him even more. He asked me to be his wife and I said yes, but… We got married a long time after his proposal but deep down we didn't really need to be married to actually know we would spend our lives together, and then we just did it… I thought I would never be able to love him more than I did on our wedding day, and I was wrong, I love him a little more every single day, he amazes me, he is an amazing father, and a perfect husband, so I am not worried about anything else because we are together!" Gabby said earning a big smile from her friend. "Why this question?" she asked then.
"Am going to ask Stella to marry me but…"
"You're scared" Gabby teased earning a roll of eyes from Kelly.
"I just don't want to mess up"
"You won't Kelly, so ask her, don't lose any more time, just ask her and she'll say yes, if you love each other don't worry" Gabby finished getting a nod from Kelly.
"Right"
After Matt got home, Gabriela decided not to talk about his speech, and because Kelly was here they enjoyed a really nice time together. Matt tried to give as much advices as possible for Kelly to do the best proposal ever. They of course ate Thai food, and watch ceiling movies for Louie and the adults to enjoy.
At some point bedtime arrived for the little boy, and Kelly decided it was time for him to get home and leave Dawson and Casey to enjoy the end of their night.
They were cuddling on the couch in silence just enjoying being in the arms of each other, Matt was tracing small pattern on Gabby's arm and shoulder, his eyes are still focused on the TV, but his mind was very far away.
Just thinking about this woman in his arms, how much he loved her, how much she meant to him, how he would never be able to live without her, she was the one for sure. And was so grateful Gabriela Dawson happened to walk in his life and changed it for the better.
"I want us to have a baby" he whispered then breaking the silence. Gabby's head snapped up as she looked at him surprised. "I want a baby, a baby with as beautiful eyes as yours, with your attitude and your good heart. A child as smart as it's mom…" he said so gently, giving butterfly to Gabby.
"I want a baby too, as good as you, with your eyes, and your dimples, and your strength" she answered running a hand over his cheek.
"My strength, where do you think I got it from? It's from you, you give me this strength" he whispered leaning gently to kiss your perfect lips. "I love you for that Gabby, for believing in me and giving me the strength to do things" he continued smiling.
"I hope you know that I'm never going to take this for granted, because I am so grateful for who you've been through everything that's been happening to us and how you've been" Gabby said emotion in her voice.
"There's no other way for me to be baby, you've been there for me so many times, you've been here when I didn't know you were here, or when I thought I was alone, you were always there, you're always there… You're the strongest person I know and I am lucky to have you by my side."
"Always" Gabby whispered snuggling into his chest.
"Always" Matt whispered back kissing the top of her head.
Gabby quickly shift and stood up under her husband's look, and took his hand pulling him with her as they walked to the bedroom after switching the TV and lights off. "We might not be able to make a baby, but it doesn't mean we can't have a little fun" she said seductively, closing the door behind them.
