The nightmare was really real. She was breathing hard, and screaming my name and I couldn't figure out what was wrong with her.
"Anakin!" she screamed. "ANAKIN! Help me!"
Tears flowed from her eyes and I tried to use the Force to deduce what was happening to my wife.
"Padme!" I yelled, caressing her swollen belly and feeling with the force if my children were in danger. "Padme!"
I felt all of their heartbeats. Padme's was definitely slowing down, we were losing her.
"Skywalker," said the medical droid. "There is nothing we can do for your wife. We are trying to save the infants."
"Please," I wailed. "I can't live without her."
"Skywalker," said Mace Windu, reaching out for me.
Angry and terrified, I used force push, and created a protective bubble around myself. I didn't want to be touched, and I tried to get to Padme.
"Sorry, man," came Rex's voice, and a torrent of cold water over me. Gasping for breath, I sat up in bed and looked around me. A tech, Mishi, and Chance were standing around my bed, staring at me like I was crazy, which I guess I was given the circumstances.
I looked up and saw Chance standing over me with an empty cup of water. In a second, he handed me a washcloth, and I dried my face off. I shivered from when the cup had drenched me in cold water, and then I realized I was sweating.
"What's wrong with him?" asked Mishi.
"He was having a night terror," said the tech.
"What is that?" I asked. I had heard of a nightmare, but what the hell was a terror?
"There are two types of sleep: REM and NREM. Nightmares occur in rem, and night terrors occur in NREM. The most classic sign of a night terror is you can't wake up, that is why we had to throw water on you. Terrors usually occur when you are twenty to thirty."
"Fantastic," I mumbled.
"What were you dreaming about?" asked Mishi.
I sighed. I wanted to tell her without reliving it. "Jedi can get visions of the future," I said. "I have had them all my life, even before I was a Jedi." Taking a shuddering breath, I tried to explain what I saw. "Basically, I can see people get hurt before they actually do."
"You are seeing people die before they do," said Chance. "That is the freakiest thing I ever heard in my life."
"It's a gift," I said, "But I could live without it."
"Can they give you something for it?" asked Mishi.
"It's a Jedi thing," I said. "I hope. Maybe I'm crazy."
Sheom poked his head in. "Guys, we need to do vitals. Mishi what are you doing in here?"
"Don't get mad at me," she cried. "Anakin was having a nightmare and Chance couldn't wake him up."
"Alright, he's fine. Now come on, we are getting vitals, everyone in the day room while we are getting checked out."
Mishi sulked out the room after being reprimanded.
"I'm going to hop in the fresher," said Chance, "get me last."
"Chance, I know you don't like being poked and prodded but it takes two seconds. Come on I'll do you first, so you can shower."
Chance rolled his eyes, but went to the day room.
"You comin?" asked Sheom.
"Yeah," I said, and followed him to the day room. I plopped down on the couch by Mishi and waited as we all got our temperature and blood pressure taken by the techs. I looked at the chronometer on the wall, and it was 0800 in the morning.
"Why are we up so early?" I asked Chance while they were taking his blood pressure.
"They get us up this early everyday," he said. "You were just half asleep the last few days."
"How are we supposed to get any sleep?"
"Well, the trick is to not be crazy. But since that is out of the question, I get sleep aid shots. There is a particular one that helps with nightmares. I'm on Minail. Its the only drug I will let them put me on."
"Minal?" I asked. "I gotta remember that."
"Alright, Chance," said Sheom. "You know the drill."
Sheom took out a thermometer and put it under Chance's tongue. "Got one for you too, Anakin," he said, and I opened my mouth for him to slide a thermometer into it. Then he slid an automatic blood pressure gauge up Chances arm, and turned it on. Chance's thermometer beeped, and then he undid Chance's cuff.
"Congratulations Chance, something about you is normal," teased Sheom.
"I've been telling Jasmine that," he said.
"You will hit on anything that moves."
"I need something to do around here."
"Alright Anakin let's check on you," said Sheom. He took out my thermometer and nodded. Then he did my blood pressure. "How are you feeling?"
"I'm okay."
"Your blood pressure is high."
"Everyone's blood pressure is high here," said Chance. "This isn't exactly a warm, welcoming place."
"When was the last time you saw a doctor?"
"Last Zhellday at the hospital."
"I am going to see if Dr. Zurdi can check you over today."
"What?! I am fine." I am in the best shape of my life!
"No, I think she needs to look you over," said Sheom. "Alright, go get some breakfast."
