Emily sighed as she tried to find a comfortable position on the couch. She was a week overdue and she was miserable. It was now December 28 and she was supposed to have her little girl a week ago, but their sweet bundle of joy wasn't in any hurry to be born. Her doctor had told her that if she didn't go into labor on her own by the 30th she would induce her. Emily hoped she wouldn't have to be induced. She just wanted her to come out, though.
"How are you doing?" Spencer asked as he settled on the couch beside her holding a plate of Christmas cookies.
"Okay, I guess. Just trying to get comfortable," Emily replied. She winced she was having a bit of cramping, but it wasn't too bad.
"Are you okay?"
"Yeah, I'm having some of the Braxton Hicks contractions," she explained.
"Oh, okay, you'd tell me if we needed to go to the hospital, wouldn't you?" Emily nodded as they settled into watch the Christmas movie showing on TV. Emily was able to ignore the contractions for a little bit longer but then they began getting stronger. Letting out a gasp at a particularly painful one she turned to Spencer.
"Hey Spencer?"
"They're getting stronger. I think I might actually be in labor." Spencer gasped and jumped up running for the stairs ready to grab the hospital bag.
"Okay, I'll get the bag, is there anything else you need to put in it? I can…"
"Spencer!" she called.
"What?"
"They're not too bad yet. We have to wait until they are five minutes apart, last for a minute, and last for an hour, remember? I've had two in the last 10 minutes, but they could slow down again," she reminded him. He nodded he remembered what they'd told them at the childbirth class they had gone to.
"So, what do you want to do?" he questioned.
"I want to go take a shower and maybe have some dinner. Then we can go from there, okay?" she suggested.
"Works for me, I'll fix us something to eat while you shower. Nodding in agreement, Emily headed for their shower thinking about the fact that she might get to meet her baby soon.

During dinner the contractions continued to grow stronger and were consistently five minutes apart. After the strongest one yet Emily decided it was time to go.
"It's time to go to the hospital she said as she took her dishes to the sink. Spencer nodded as he did the same and after grabbing the bags, he helped Emily into her coat and guided her out to the car. He couldn't believe when they came home, they'd be a family of three.
"Are you ready to meet our rainbow baby?" he asked softly.
"Yes, I am," Emily responded. She was excited and terrified all at the same time.

"Everything looks good, Emily. You're about four CM dilated. So, a little under halfway there," her doctor told her.
"That's good, and the baby's okay?" the mother-to-be checked.
"She's doing great. Do you want an epidural?" the doctor questioned.
"No, not right now. I'll let you know if I want one. Is it a problem that my water hasn't broken yet?"
"No, if it doesn't break in the next hour or two, though, I'll break it," the doctor replied. "Unless you have any more questions I'll head out and check on you in an hour or so."
"No, we don't thank," Spencer replied. The doctor smiled and left the two of them alone.
"Can you call the team?" Emily requested.
"I called JJ while they were hooking you up to all the monitors and she's calling the others. She told me they all would stay home until she's born. Garcia and she will keep the others updated when I send them messages. Emily nodded and tensed as another contraction began. Spencer watched it on the monitor and held out his hand for her to hold. After riding out a few more contractions Emily was getting restless.
"What's wrong, sweetheart?"
"I need to move. Lying down isn't helping. Let's take a walk," she suggested.
"That's a good idea," the nurse said as she entered to do another round of checks. "Once I'm done you can take a lap around the maternity ward." Giving her a slight smile Emily nodded in thanks as the nurse looked at the monitors and smiled. "Everything looks great, the baby's heartbeat is strong. Enjoy your walk," she said as she helped Emily out of the bed and after draping the tubes for her monitors around her neck allowed her to take Spencer's hand and head out for the walk.

Emily moaned as she walked. She could feel the baby moving down. The contractions were coming between three and four minutes apart. "God this hurts," she panted leaning against the wall through a contraction. Spencer reached out and rubbed her back.
"I know do you want to go back to the room?" he asked. Emily nodded biting her lip trying not to cry out.
"Just. Give. Me. A. moment…" she gasped as the contraction climaxed then slowly came back down. Once it had ended, they began the long walk back to their room. They were at the other end of the ward.

Arriving back at the room they met the doctor as she reached the door.
"Good timing it's time for me to check you again, Emily," the doctor instructed.
"Okay, after this contract…" Emily broke off as the contraction slammed into her. "Aaaahhhhhh!" she cried out as she doubled over. This was the strongest contraction yet. She felt a pop and a gush of fluid came out. "Uh… I think my water just broke," she stated trying to breathe through the contraction. Looking down the doctor was pleased to see that the fluid was clear.
"Yes, it did and it's clear which is a good thing. Are you ready to get back on the bed so I can check you?" she asked. Emily nodded breathing a sigh of relief that the contraction was over. Spencer and the doctor helped her back on to the bed letting her get comfortable before the doctor checked her.
"Well all that walking has done some good. You're eight CM dilated now. You're entering transition, it won't be too much longer before you get to meet your baby girl. Emily tried to smile but a contraction was beginning, and it was taking her breath away.
"Fuck… this hurts so bad. My water breaking has made them ten times worse," she whimpered reaching out for something to grab. Spencer offered his hand which she squeezed for all she was worth. He tried not to wince he knew the pain he was in was only a fraction of what she was dealing with.
"You're doing so good, baby," he whispered in her ear. Reaching out he wiped her face with the damp cloth he'd been using. Emily gave him a small smile as she sank back on to the pillows. Time seemed to blur after that. The contractions came one on top of another. Emily had started to experience some pretty severe nausea. The nurse had given her some antinausea drugs, but they didn't seem like they were helping much. During a contraction Emily groaned and her eyes went wide.
"Oh god, Spencer!" she yelled. He'd stepped away to refill her cup of ice chips. He rushed back to her side to find her a sickly shade of green.
"What's wrong?"
"I'm going to be sick, hurry!" she cried. As quick as he could Spencer grabbed the basin and placed it under her mouth. It was just in time as Emily began violently throwing up. She cried as the contracting of her stomach muscles as a result of the throwing up happened as another contraction was happening. Finally, she stopped throwing up and sank wearily back on to her pillows.
"Are we not feeling well?" the nurse asked as she entered the room.
"I think I'm okay now, god at least I hope so. I think I threw everything up," Emily replied.
"Okay, let me check and make sure the monitors are still in the right place," the nurse said as Spencer left to empty out the basin. Just as the nurse finished her check the doctor walked in.
"Okay, lets check you and see if you're ready to deliver," the doctor instructed.
"Well you'd better do it fast, because my next contraction isn't far away," Emily grumbled. The doctor nodded and took her place at the foot of the bed.
"You're at 10 CM, Emily. You'll be pushing soon. We're going to get your bed ready for delivery," the doctor informed the happy couple.
"Oh, thank god," Emily groaned as she felt another contraction building. Spencer grinned he couldn't wait to meet his baby girl.
"Do you want me to text the team?" Spencer asked.
"Yes," Emily answered through gritted teeth.
"Okay, I'm going to step out and do that and go to the bathroom," he answered.
"Okay, but don't be too long. I don't think she's going to wait much longer," Emily groaned as she went from one contraction right into another. Nodding Spencer hurried to do what he needed to and come back as quickly as he could.
Arriving back at her room he walked in and noticed that Emily was taking deliberate breaths.
"Get the doctor now! I can feel her head and she's not waiting! If you don't hurry, you'll be delivering her. Oh god, I have to push, fuck!" Emily began to bear down.
"No, don't push, I'll get her," Spencer said as he repeatedly pushed the call button. The nurse came running.
"What is it?"
"She's coming out and I have to push!" Emily yelled. Gasping in surprise the nurse took a look then ran out of the room. A moment later the doctor came rushing in with the nurse right behind him.
"Looks like this little girl is ready to meet her Mommy and Daddy. Okay, Emily, on your next contraction I want you to curl around yourself and put your chin to your chest while pushing down like you're trying to poop. Push as hard as you can," the doctor instructed.
"You mean like this?" Emily growled as she curled forward and pushed with all her mite.
"Yes, just like that, I can see her starting to move forward. Keep up the good work. Emily continued to push for about half an hour. She was getting discouraged. Her daughter's head was close but wasn't crowning just yet.
"Can I try a different position, please?" the laboring woman requested.
"Sure, what did you have in mind?" the doctor asked.
"Can I squat for a bit? I feel like that would help. Nodding the doctor and nurse helped position her on the floor.
"Okay, dad, if you'll get behind her and support her. Help her count like you've been doing. Emily, you just keep doing what you're doing," the doctor told her.
"Don't worry, I'm going to. God, I need to push!"
"Push then," the doctor told her.
"I am! Ooooooooo fuck! Oh god, this hurts, I think I can feel her head," Emily gasped. The doctor looked down and smiled.
"I can see it; it's starting to crown. Emily could feel the overwhelming urge to push again so she did.
"Aaaaah!" she screamed.
"Okay, Emily, I need you to stop pushing for a moment. Just breathe."
"But I need to push," she whined.
"I know but if you do right now, you'll tear. Let me help ease her head out then you can push again," the doctor instructed. Emily nodded and tried to blow through the contraction.
"Just keep breathing," Spencer soothed. Emily glared at him and he snapped his mouth shut.
"Okay, Emily, give me a good push.
"Good, because I was going to anyway!" Emily yelled as she bore down.
"Okay we've got the shoulders. One more little push and she'll be here," the doctor said. Nodding Emily gave one more push and cried in relief as she felt her child slip from her body.
"It's a girl, do you want to cut the cord, Dad?" the doctor asked. Nodding Spencer stood on shaky legs and made his way to where the doctor was kneeling on the floor with his tiny daughter cradled in her hands.
"Where do I cut?" he asked.
"Right between the two yellow clamps," the nurse told him. Cutting the chord Reid smiled as the little girl began to cry now that she was separated from her mother and out in this cold bright world. The nurse took the baby to clean her up and weigh and measure her while Spencer and the doctor helped Emily back up on to the bed.
"She's perfect, sweetheart. I love you so much," Spencer declared kissing Emily tenderly on the lips as happy tears streamed down his face.
"I love you to," she whispered. "Spencer, go to her and make sure she's okay," Emily instructed.
"Yes, dear," he said making is way to where his infant daughter was squalling at the injustices being done to her.
"Hey Doc, I have to push again is that normal?"
"Yes, it's the after birth," he explained taking his place back at the end of the bed.
"This feels like more than just the placenta! Oh god I think I feel another head!" Emily nearly shouted.
"What?" Spencer gasped turning back around. The doctor quickly took a look and his eyes widened.
"You're right, apparently this little lady has a baby brother or sister ready to be born."
TBC?
A/n, this little twist I just thought of. Hope you enjoy it.
