The first following day was the hardest to cope for Madelyn, she threw herself into work by helping Gaius and Merlin with tending to the hurt and wounded. Her skill for stitching had been used to many times to count. The roaring Dragon endlessly attacking Camelot without mercy, ending countless of lives as days went by. Merlin had told her the story of how he had promised to release the Dragon and blamed himself for all the pain and misery but Madelyn had almost slapped him. The only one top blame for all the death was the Dragon, he chose to attack Camelot.

Now it was day three since the dragon attacked and Madelyn sat half conscious from lack of sleeping, with a sleeping child in her arms. The girl lost her parents and no one knew if they were alive and so Madelyn decided keep the child close. No one should be alone in these times and the child, Rose, held onto Madelyn.

Madelyn didn't dare to sleep for long and she only slept when she couldn't keep her mind awake, the images and nightmares of Mary and Bernhard's death still close whenever she closed her eyes.

"Gwen! Don't! " Gaius calling made Madelyn look towards the door where she spotted Gwen run out with an empty bucket. After slowly standing up and placing the sleeping Rose on a cot Madelyn moved to Gaius.

"Where is she going? " Gaius looked just as tired as Madelyn.

"She saw we needed more fresh water." His voice was tired and sad. Madelyn nodded and felt worry rise inside her as they both looked at the door where the brave servant girl had disappeared.

Gwen had made it, thanks to the prince. Madelyn watched as Gwen tended to Arthur and smiled, happy that the two had each other. Turning her head her gaze fell upon her brother as he approached her and Gaius.

"Are you hurt?" Madelyn put her hand on Merlin's arm, her question was met with the smallest of smiles as a no and her brothers arms around her. The siblings had shared many hugs these past days since Madelyn's injury and loss.

"There's nothing I can do, my magic is no good. It doesn't work." Madelyn hugged her younger brother closer in comfort as they but listened to Gaius.

"Dragons aren't monsters. They're creatures of wonder and magic. You must realise that they're immune to your powers."

Madelyn had heard the idea of Arthur riding to find a so called Dragonlord which meant that Merlin would go aswell so now she hurried to find him.

"Merlin!" She called as she saw him further down the corridor walking slightly behind Arthur, as she called the both stopped.

"Maddy?" Merlin's face showed slight confusion and he knew she wanted something else than wish him a safe journey.

"Please, let me come with you." Her words shocked Merlin and for a few seconds he watched her, waiting for her to reveal if it was a joke. Realising she wore her serious face and her back straight Merlin knew she wasn't backing down.

"What? No, Maddy it could be dangerous. Besides I'm sure Arthur would never allow it." Merlin turned towards Arthur and just as the prince was about to speak Madelyn spoke again.

"Sire, I am aware of the journey you're making. I've travelled those roads and I've been in that area when travelling to buy new fabrics with ..." Madelyn's voice broke slightly, and as Arthur watched the young woman he realised she wanted to do this not only for helping Camelot but for the man and woman whom had died.

"Are you sure? It will be dangerous." Arthur's answer made both siblings look up at him, Merlin's face showed great shock as Madelyn's held a certain calmness and a greatfull smile made it's way onto her lips.

"I'm sure, Sire." Arthur hesitated slightly, studying the woman who he never had seen so sure, reminding him of Morgana and he nodded.

"We'll leave as soon as we can, are you not in the stables we have to go without you." With a nod Madelyn turned and hurried to find Gwen, she needed clothes. There was something that kept poking her mind, why did the name Balinor sound so familiar?

How Gwen had managed to find traveling clothes that fitted Madelyn was a wonder but now she stood ready in Gaius chambers, in breaches and a shirt with a brown vest on top. She held a jacket belonging to Merlin and watched as her brother packed for the journey.

"Merlin..." Her words were gentle.

"Please, just... tell me why?" Merlin stopped and looked at his sister, his eyes filled with worry.

"I... can't stay here, I need to leave Camelot. It hurts so much remembering... them." Madelyn's words held sorrow and pain.

"Leave? For ever?" Merlin's voice hitched as he moved towards his sister.

"No, just right now." Madelyn smiled slightly and held onto Merlin's hands. Merlin sighed and nodded, knowing Madelyn would joining would be dangerous but she needed it. "Now get back to packing before Arthur rides away from the both of us." Merlin smiled and nodded and went back to packing. Madelyn's eyes followed Gaius who had been pacing the chambers all the time while she had been here. Exchanging a look with her brother she knew he was wondering the same.

"Who were the dragonlords? Gaius?" Thanks to Merlin's question Gaius snapped out of his pacing and turned to the children of Hunith.

"There were once men who could talk to the dragons, tame them."

"What happend to them?" Madelyn's asked what she knew they both wanted to know.

"Uther believed that the art of the dragonlord was too close to magic. So he had them all rounded up and slaughtered." Madelyn shared a look with Merlin again, pain evident in Gaius' voice.

"But one survived. How did you know?" Merlin asked his mentor.

"I helped him escape." Gaius answer startled them both.

"Gaius." Merlin smiled teasingly, Gaius defying the king was not common. Madelyn smiled aswell but was intrigued now more than ever.

"Merlin, you've never heard the name Balinor? " Madelyn saw the exchange between the older man and her brother but couldn't hold it.

"Your mother never mentioned him?" Madelyn suddenly felt an overwhelming sense of knowing the name. She saw images of a man walking alongside her mother, and how Madelyn ran towards them laughing. The man picked her up and swung her around and she felt so happy. She didn't realise the others kept talking until she heard Gaius.

"Merlin, I promised her I would never speak of these things. " As Merlin opened his mouth to speak Madelyn spoke up.

"I've...heard of it." The two males looked at her. "And I know why." Madelyn kept her eyes on Gaius, teary eyes as she felt all the memories and feelings come back to her. "He's our father. " Gaius sighed slightly and nodded confirming.

"Yes. I sent him long ago to Ealdor when Uther started feeling suspicious. When a few years later Uther called all the dragonlords Balinor came back to Camelot to try and convince Uther otherwise. But instead Uther tried to have him executed and so I helped him escape. When Uther managed to follow his trace to Ealdor is when Balinor had to escape." Merlin starred wide eyed at his mentor and sister.

"My father was a dragonlord! Why did no one ever tell me!? " Merlin's outburst towards them both didn't surprise but still it hurt Madelyn seeing her brother so upset.

"I wanted to. Your mother feared it to be too dangerous." Gaius stayed calm as he answered.

"I had the right to know!" Merlin's voice was filled with pain, sadness and anger.

"She wanted to protect you, both of you." Madelyn looked down at her lap, understanding the danger they would've been in.

"No. I had the right to know. " with that Merlin rushed out the door. Madelyn looked at Gaius, giving him a small reassuring smile as she grabbed both hers and Merlin's bag than followed her brother.

They stood on the square readying the horses when Merlin spoke.

"Did you know?" Merlin's quiet question came after a long time of silence. Madelyn turned around from her horse and looked at her brother smiling gently.

"No I didn't even know he was a sorcerer. I guess I saw him using magic and such but... I think I never asked. Call it a daughter's admiration. I'm sorry I've never mentioned him, I barely remember anything." Madelyn wished she remembered him so she could have told Merlin. Giving her a smile Merlin turned towards his horse as Gaius approached.

"You got everything you need?" Merlin nodded slightly but Madelyn knew he wouldn't leave being angry at Gaius.

"I'm sorry, I didn't mean to..." smiling at the two Madelyn sat up on her horse

"I know that." Smiling at the two Madelyn sat up on her horse as she noticed the prince arriving ready to go.

"Come on Merlin. " it was clear on Arthur's voice he wanted to get going.

"You're ready?" At Merlin's surprised question Madelyn almost bit her lip to not laugh.

"No thanks to you." As Arthur sat on his horse he cringed and Madelyn remembered the wound he had, her brother seeing it aswell.

"You okay?"

"It's just a scratch." As Arthur urged his horse forward Merlin sat up. Madelyn was ready to follow but Gaius speaking made her wait.

"Whatever happens, any of you must not let Arthur know who this man is. Uther would view the son and daughter of a dragonlord with the deepest suspicion." Nodding towards the physician the two rode away.
