Chapter 22:
I slept in the cave that night, on a couch. I'm not exactly sure how it works, but apparently one of the special vampire powers is having a mind connection with other vampires, and David told Uncle Max where I'd be.
When David and I got back, Paul was the only one waiting up for us, that big grin on his face. "So Lilah girl, what do you think?" I smiled at him. "I think it makes a lot of sense, like all the missing pieces of my life fit all together."
He laughed. "So do you remember anything?" I giggled, starting to sing. "We can't go on together, with suspicious minds." He bounced up from his seat on the couch and grabbed my arms, swinging me around as he joined in, both of us laughing and David shaking his head as he watched us. "You'd listen to this song every night" Paul grinned, letting go. I nodded. "I know that now."
The guys had climbed into a deeper part of the cave to go sleep, and I noticed Star and Laddie had been sleeping in the corner of the main room on a giant bed.
Sometime during the night, or day I guess, since some sunlight was peeking through, Laddie had climbed onto the couch and snuggled into my side, waking me up. "You okay?" I asked, worried he had a bad dream. He nodded. "I'm okay Lilah, now that you're here" I smiled and ruffled his hair as I wrapped an arm around him and we drifted back to sleep.
...
"Over there!" I was dreaming, and in my dream, these loud voices were coming closer and closer to me. Why? I don't know. And I don't think I'd want to find out either.
"There she is!" The voices were shouting again, but they sounded much louder. Suddenly, a pair of arms were shaking me awake and I opened my eyes to see Edgar and Alan standing in front of the couch. I almost screamed, but I thought better of it.
"What are you doing here?" I asked, sitting up, trying so carefully to avoid moving Laddie. "Did they hurt you?" Edgar asked, still gripping my shoulders. "Did who hurt me?" I asked, maneuvering my way off the couch. "And keep it down, Laddie's still sleeping." "The bloodsuckers of course!" Alan scoffed, and I felt my face go pale. They knew. They absolutely knew.
I took in their appearances, my friends the 'Vampire Hunters', and grimaced. They had garlic, bottles of Holy Water, stakes, you name it. None of these things meant anything until now, when they've become threats to the safety of my family. "I don't know what you're talking about" I mumbled. Edgar's face turned red. "Don't play dumb Lilah, we know the truth. We know what they are. They're killers. And if you don't tell us where they are, you're just as bad." They started to walk off and I noticed Sam and Michael had finally joined us, Sam supporting Mike, who looked like he had been hit by a truck.
"Holy Shit!" Alan yelled, running around the place. "Vampire hotel!" "Look!" Edgar exclaimed as he found Star on her bed. "She's one of them. Let's stake her!"
"Don't you touch her!" Mike's voice boomed. "You stay away from her!" He walked over to Star and the boys rolled their eyes and started looking around. "Come on, Vampires have such rotten temper. The rest of them have got to be here someplace. We'll find them". I glared at Sam. "Why would you call them?" I hissed. He shook his head. "Aren't they your friends?" "Sure they are. And So are the boys, but I wouldn't let them kill you guys!" I hissed. He winced, and I watched as Mike leaned over to pick Star up. "No, take Laddie first" She whined. So Star was in on this? My eyes widened as he turned and headed to the couch, and I ran over, blocking my little cousin.
"No, you're not taking him!" I exclaimed, folding my arms in front of my chest, trying to look as intimidating as possible. "Lilah, move." Mike said. I shook my head. "I said you're not taking him!" Before I knew it, arms were wrapped around me and I was kicking and screaming, demanding to be let go, as Mike picked Laddie up and threw his leather jacket over his face. "Let him go!" I yelled. "Shut up!" Edgar snapped. "You'll wake them up. Then how are we going to catch them by surprise?" I shoved my elbow into his stomach and turned around as he let go, doubling over. "You shut up! You shut the hell up! You must be stupid if you think I'm going to let you kill my family!" I hadn't noticed, but in the time I was yelling at him, Sam and Alan had headed down towards the back of the cave, where the guys were, and Michael had come back for Star.
"Are you stupid Lilah?" Edgar yelled. "He's probably not even your cousin! He's a creepy old vampire and you-" I punched him in the arm. I had never punched anybody before, let alone my best friend. "What was that for?" He yelled. My eyes narrowed. "He's not a creepy old vampire. And you're right Edgar, you're right, of course you're right cause God forbid you're ever wrong, right? He's not my cousin Edgar. He's never been my cousin." "What is he then, huh?" "He's my father and if you think I'm going to sit here and let you-" He rushed forward and clamped a hand over my mouth. "Shut up!" He hissed. I bit his hand, and he pulled away angrily. "Don't touch me," I said. "Then shut up! Do you hear that?" I shook my head as we stood silent, and then heard Sam and Alan yelling as they came running from the depths of the cave.
Both of us ran over, watching as they came out of the opening. "Let's get out of here!" Sam yelled. "What did you do!" I screamed, hearing pained cries coming from the deep, dark depths. "Lilah let's go!" Sam grabbed my arm, but I shook my head, firmly planting my feet on the ground. "NO! I'm not leaving!" The boys looked at each other and before I knew it, Edgar had grabbed me and slung me over his shoulder as the three of them raced up the stairs and into the sunlight.
"LET GO!" I yelled, beating on his back. "LET GO OF ME!" Sam got into the driver's seat and Alan climbed in next to him, Edgar throwing me in and climbing next to me, slamming the door shut as he wrapped his arms around me and yelled, "Burn Rubber!" to my cousin.
Alan hit the accelerator and we all screamed as the car headed backwards to the edge of the cliff, Sam slamming on the brakes. "Burn rubber, does not mean warped speed!" He exclaimed, putting the car in drive and taking us out of there. Hot, silent tears fell down my face the further away we got.
"Lilah, do you understand you were in danger?" Alan asked, and I turned away from him, staring out the window. "Lilah," Sam called. "Talk to us." We were silent for a minute, until I said, "Grandpa's going to be pissed you took the car."
