Well after 6 months, I'm back. I recently switched jobs and moved to a different state so it's been difficult to find time to work on this. However I haven't forgotten about it. I've been brainstorming and tossing ideas around in my head, now I simply need to write it all out. Anyways, here's the LONG overdue update...

WARNING: Chapter contains attempted kidnapping and hints of depression

The cold was harsh on both of them as they slowly made their way through the streets of Arendelle. The familiarity of the city was overshadowed by their cautious fear. They already had to hide from two small patrols. Their progress was slow and Elsa was concerned they wouldn't be able to make it back to the Larsen's before morning. Elsa turned a corner into an alley and her sister followed close behind. "Elsa, we're just going to find him. No crazy improvised rescue, okay?" Elsa rolled her eyes. "Okay." Suddenly a third unfamiliar voice behind them made them jump. "Perhaps I could save you some trouble."

Without hesitation, that switch in Elsa flipped and she went into 'protect' mode. She turned to see a small figure standing behind them. The source of the voice was encased in ice before he could react. Blue eyes met red eyes. Elsa could not describe what she was looking at. "What on earth?"

The troll wasn't surprised by her powers but mostly startled at her focus and precision. With his arms and body almost entirely encased, he could only speak. His dark raspy voice made both sisters uncomfortable. "That's no way to greet an old friend."

Anna managed to find her voice after observing him. "Are you... a troll?"

Ekon rolled his eyes. "Yes, little Anna. Although you're not so little anymore. Neither of you are."

Elsa took a step toward him. "How do you know us?"

"I don't expect you to remember me. It has been many years and you were both quite little last I saw you. I came after hearing of your father's situation. I had hoped to help him but as you can see, I'm at somewhat of a disadvantage. However, you can help him. I know where he is."

This got both their attentions. "Where? Please tell us..."

The troll internally smiled. "There's an evil man residing over this city. He has taken your father to a church in the center of the city. He's holding him prisoner in the tower that stretches farthest into the sky."

Anna looked at her sister. "The steeple... The Colonel has him in the steeple..."

Although this was the information they had so longed for, Elsa was skeptical. "You said you knew us years ago... Did you know our father?"

Ekon quickly thought of a lie but decided to season it with some truth. "Years ago, I helped your father when your mother took ill... I'm sorry for your loss. She was a kind human."

Elsa interrupted him. "Thank you, but I remember when mother was sick. Yet I don't remeber you..."

Sensing her growing distrust of him, he continued. "I wouldn't expect you to. Your father sought my help in secret... When I couldn't save her, your father went to my brother for help and... I'm sorry for the burden you've had to bear Elsa... You were but a child. You couldn't be at fault for what happened..."

Elsa's eyes widened. "What are you talking about?"

He feigned surprise. "You... You don't remember? Freezing your mother's heart? Oh Elsa... I'm sorry you had to find out like this... But you're grown now and you deserve to know. You and little Anna were playing in the forest one day and your magic accidentaly struck your mother... Her heart slowly froze."

By now Elsa had begun to cry. Torn between not believing him and the actual possibility he could be telling the truth. "You're lying... I don't remember any of this."

Anna interjected. "Neither do I! Our mother died of pneumonia."

"As I said, your father sought my brother's help when my help proved ineffective. My brother has the ability to alter memories. I'm sure your father asked him to do such to keep you from having to live with that pain."

Elsa pondered what the troll was claiming. "How can we know you're telling the truth?"

"If I may have the use of my arm..."

Elsa thawed his one arm but nothing more. The troll reached into his pocket and retrieved a small mirror, unlike anything the girls had ever seen. It fit in the palm of his hand with a ring of glowing orange stones around the reflective glass. He quickly explained. "What my brother does can shroud or change painful memories but he cannot remove them. This mirror allows a person to see deeply within themselves so much so that the shrould is pulled off and what has been forgotten can be remembered. I must warn you, once you learn the truth, there's no going back..."

The sisters looked at each other. Anna was against the idea, thinking it could be a trap. Before she could say anything, Elsa reached out and took the mirror. Anna's eyes widened as she reached to knock the mirror from her sister's hand fearing for her safety. But she was too late...

Elsa glanced upon her reflection all but a second and in an instant, she could see herself and Anna playing in the snow. Their family had taken a day to go out in the forest. Their mother stood nearby watching them to make sure they were safe while their father was tying their horses up nearby. Elsa had built a snowman and their laughter filled the air. It was a joyful day. Soon they were sliding along an ice sled she had made, but a mound of snow threw them both from the sled and Elsa intended to create a soft mound of snow to catch them, but she felt her magic accidentally fly in the wrong direction. A pained scream was heard. She recovered from her hard landing in time to see her mother crumble and fall to the ground. As fast as her legs could carry her, she ran through the snow. Anna quickly followed her and Elsa kneeled next to their mother. She paused in shock for a moment as her mother's chest glowed a brght blue... The same color as her magic. Anna didn't know what to do. Elsa quickly screamed. "Father! Father, please help!"

Elsa was pulled from the memory as Anna slapped the mirror out of her hand. Elsa had barely held it a second but it felt like several minutes. Anna scolded her. "We don't know what that thing does! It could hurt you." Her words fell on deaf ears as Elsa could not focus on anything but the lost memory she had just witnessed... She couldn't describe what she felt. Dread. Fear. Like a blinder had been removed from her eyes. The memory replayed in her mind as Anna reached for her sister. The instant she touched her shoulder, Elsa pulled away as if the touch burned her.

Anna looked into her sister's eyes and saw something that ripped her heart out. Fear.

The tears in Elsa's eyes intensified as she distanced herself from her sister. "Anna, just..." Her voice broke as she cried. "Stay away..." Without thinking, she turned and ran from the alley. Anna went numb. Her mind a whirl of fear, rejection, and confusion. She doesn't know what Elsa saw in that brief second but whatever it was seemed to be enough to frighten her best friend into running from her.

Forgetting Ekon, Anna ran after her sister. She followed the alley and saw no sign of her. She continued before a sudden loud sound pierced her ears. A gunshot. The sound came from directly in front of her and Anna sprinted in the direction of the sound fearing the worst for her sister. "No God! Please no!"

She came to a street and saw her sister urgently being loaded onto a truck by two soldiers. She wasn't moving. Before Anna could figure out a way to stop them, the truck pulled away and Anna tried to catch them. She stopped cold as she saw blood on the ground where the truck had been and as best she could ran after them. The faster she ran, the weaker her legs felt after some time, the weight of everything that had happened fell on her at once and she collapsed in tears.

Finally she found the strength to get up and wipe her tears. She needed to help her sister. Making her way back where she came from, Ekon was still stuck in Elsa's ice. He had begun to chip away at it attempting to free himself. Anger flared in Anna. "What did you show her?!"

Still maintaining his story, the troll told her. "I showed her what happened the day she hit her mother's heart with her magic. Where is she?"

"Soldiers took her. Where are they going?!"

Abandoning his facade, Ekon grinned widely. "The same place as your father. And you won't be seeing her again."

Anna stepped back at seeing his change in attitude. Seeing her shocked, he continued. "Once I'm free of this ice, I'll kill you and go collect my end of the deal."

Despite his threat, Anna composed herself internally enough to know she needed information. "What deal? What do you want?!"

Feeling confident in his plan, he decided to boast some. "That human named Hans wants your family's wealth, I want your sister's magic. Once he caught her, I ensured she wouldn't be able to escape so he can get what he wants. Then he will hand her over to me."

At seeing another piece of the ice break off, freeing one of his legs, she hurried away before he could free himself. She would have attacked him in his vulnerable state but she had no weapon and didn't know how to hurt a troll. So as fast as she could and after some time had passed, she returned to the Larsen's and burst into the room to find nobody there. They were all still asleep. Her grief getting the better of her, she fell into the first chair she came to and buried her head in her hands and cried.

After a few minutes, she heard someone rushing to her side. "Anna?! What's going on?!" She looked up to see Luc and Kristoff standing next to her. She could only muster her voice to utter one word. "Elsa..." At the sound of her sister's name, all emotions from the night came flooding back to her. The young men spent several minutes trying to help her any way they could. Before long, the sounds had woken the Larsens who came downstairs to find the three of them. Noticing Elsa's absence and Anna's state, they quickly realized something was wrong. It took almost an hour for Anna to calm herself enough to speak, almost passing out from the exhaustion of her emotions. She looked at Mr. Larsen and decided the time for secrets was over. "Do you know Elsa's secret?" Mr. Larsen's eyes widened as he looked at Luc and Kristoff, as if wordlessly asking Anna a question. "They already know." She managed to say.

Giving her a nod, he answered her question. "Yes, I do know. Anna I know it's hard, but please try to tell us what's happened."

It took a considerable amount of time, given her difficulty speaking, but she went through every detail from them sneaking out to find their father, to the troll's confession of plotting with Colonel Hans.

After she had finished telling the story, she looked at Mr. Larsen before anyone could ask a question. "Mr. Larsen, who is he?"

Mr. Larsen took a deep breath. "His name is Ekon... He tried to kidnap Elsa when you were both children. Anna... I don't know what Elsa saw in that mirror, but what happened was an accident. After it happened, your father did everything he could to save your mother but nothing was working and she kept getting worse. Then this troll came along offering to save her in exchange for Elsa. Your father refused, and..." Mr. Larsen paused... "Anna, are you sure you want to know this?" Anna started to get upset again. "YES! I have to know!" After a deep breath, he continued. "He watched and waited for your father to leave you alone, then he tried to take Elsa while your father was out getting food for your family."

The troll crept through the window and snuck across the floor into the house. After having watched the house for several days, the man finally left near sunrise so Ekon took the opportunity to act. He crept across the floor and searched each room until he found what he was looking for. A small girl with platinum blonde hair lay resting peacefully in her bed. He approached her silently. Before the troll could act, he felt a blunt object strike the back of his head. Dazed from the impact, he turned to find a taller woman who appeared almost pale and sickly stood over him. "Get away from my daughter!" She screamed as she continued to swing away at the intruder. Unable to stand up to the onslaught of hits, the troll retreated from the house, opting to try again at another time. The sound woke the girls just in time to see a small creature rush out of their room with their mother standing nearby holding a frying pan. After a moment she collapsed. Elsa and Anna rushed to her side but there was nothing they could do. With her last ounce of strength she looked at them and softly smiled. "My babies... I love you both so much..." The girls both cried next to her, holding her hand. "We love you mother..." With another soft smile, her eyes slowly drifted shut. She was gone.

Mr. Larsen continued the story. "Despite her weakness, your mother fought him off but in her condition... the strain was too much... She didn't survive." Anna was now crying again. Fredrick decided to continue. "That nearly killed your father. He wasn't there with her when Elsa accidentally hit her and he wasn't there when she passed... He regrets to this day not being able to protect your mother or you. So fearing for your safety, your father took you and your sister and fled to the mountains. He kept you and Elsa alive by surviving off the land for weeks."

Agdar trekked through the forest carrying some fish from the stream and some berries. It'd be enough for his girls, but that was all. Looks like he wouldn't be eating again tonight. He was beginning to feel the effect of skipping meals. He felt weaker, slower, but lately he'd only been able to find enough food for Elsa and Anna. He would be fine though.

As he approached their shelter made of tree branches and brush to protect from the rain, he noticed Anna had built a fire and was warming herself by it. "Where's your sister?" Anna looked up at her father with no expression. "She's not feeling well again... I'm giving her some space..." Agdar nodded his understanding but decided to check on her anyway. He found her down the hill from their shelter at the stream. She sat motionless on the ground watching the water flow by her. Agdar sat next to her. "Hey snowflake." She didn't even look up at him. "You want to talk to me honey?" Elsa looked away. She hadn't been the same since they left Arendelle, ever since their mother. Neither had Anna... The food he managed to scrounge, they barely ate, and almost never spoke anymore. Agdar's heart broke at seeing them in such pain. They were just children. They didn't deserve this... But he understood they both needed some time to themselves so he would give them that and be there if they needed anything. In the back of his mind, he knew it was worse than that. They blamed themselves for everything that happened to their family.

That night he sat outside keeping the fire going while the girls slept inside. His mind consumed with thoughts of what their future held. He was interrupted as he heard footsteps approaching and grabbed his knife. A voice spoke to him from the darkness. "Forgive me for startling you. I had hoped to help..." Agdar's eyes widened as a troll emerged from the forest. This one looked different from Ekon, but no matter. He raised his knife. "Don't come any closer. I know what trolls mean when they claim they want to 'help'."

The troll appeared hurt by the words. "My name is Pabbie. I've come to sincerely apologize for my brother's behavior... We trolls try not to mingle with humans but my brother's selfish ambition has forced me to do so. I've come to tell you that we've captured him. He won't be bothering your family anymore."

Agdar looked skeptically at the troll. "Why would you come here to tell me that?" The troll took another step and Agdar raised his knife. He stopped and spoke from a distance. "Because I believe it's not enough... What Ekon has done to your family is terrible and you've suffered a tremendous loss. I had hoped that in some way I could make things better. Your daughters need not suffer with the memory of this tragic experience. If you wish, I can alter their memories to be joyful and happy ones."

Agdar thought on this for a moment. After seeing the light vanish from his daughters' eyes over the last several weeks, he just wanted them to be happy again, and not blame themselves for what happened to Iduna. "What about the memory of their mother?"

The troll sadly smiled. "They will remember her passing from an illness peacefully in her bed as your family gathers around her. It'll still be painful but they will find joy in life after they mourn her loss. Better they live with the pain of loss than to blame themselves for such loss. Would you agree?"

Agdar thought about it and closed his eyes as a tear slid down his cheek. "Okay..."

The troll nodded. "I'm so sorry for what your family has been through, but you're safe now. You can take them home and let them live their lives in peace."

"That night, he changed your memories, and Elsa's, and asked for nothing in return. He claimed that he wanted to right Ekon's wrongs. In doing so, he captured and imprisoned Ekon and said he would be locked away for all time."

Anna finally burst. "How could father just let him change our memories?! I remember my mom dying in her bed! I remember her last words! But it's a lie!" Mr. Larsen was quick to comfort her. "Anna, your father loves you both. He always questioned whether he made the right decision, but he wanted you and Elsa to be happy. Anna, when he first told me this story, I thought in his grief over your mother, he was losing his mind. As time went on, he convinced me, and I assured him then as I assure you now, he made that hard choice out of love."

Anna took a deep breath to bury her anger. "That doesn't matter now, what's done is done. Now we need to save my sister too." She looked pleading to Kristoff. "Its my fault she was out there tonight." Tears started breaking through again. "Please help me save her..."

Kristoff looked to Luc and Mr Larsen. "We'll get her back, and your father."

Absolutely insane... I wrote this whole chapter in a couple of hours... That's how much I've wanted to get this out. I've played with ideas off and on over the last few months and honestly once I started writing it all out, it just flowed. I know what direction I want this to go, I just need to find the time to finish it. Thank you for reading and I hope you're enjoying it! Also, I apologize in advance for any plot holes. It's been a while since I updated and I had to read through a few chapters to remind myself of some important details, so hopefully I covered all the major ones. Please leave a review of what you think of this chapter! :)
