XX. Elerie and Nick

"Welcome to a new world of gods and monsters." Back in the head of Prodigium's office, Jekyll held up the glass, almost as if in a toast. Nick took it and took a long drink.

"Evil takes many forms," Jekyll continued.

Nick took a large gulp. "My ex-wife would probably tell you me," he joked. The Doctor just stared back at him. "That I'm one of them, the many forms of evil – no? Okay." He downed the rest of his drink.

"Evil lives in the shadows, searching for a way to come in-"

"Okay, now you're sounding like my ex-wife-"

"My point, Mr. Morton-"

"Oi-" He was interrupted by Elerie storming into the office, Jenny and Malik at her heels, obviously trying to stop her. She strode up to the doctor, pointing at him accusingly. "You, Jekyll. You're planning on killing him?"

"Kill?" repeated Nick. "Kill who? Kill, kill me?"

"Ms. Taylor-"

"Oh cut it with the 'Ms'. It's 'Doctor'," she snapped.

Nick nodded, impressed. That was his fiery Ellie.

"Doctor Taylor, Mr. Morton here essentially killed himself when he severed the barrier chain that had kept Ahmanet's powers imprisoned for five-thousand years. He was chosen as her ideal candidate – a thief, physically capable, compulsively devious, and utterly devoid of soul."

Nick stared back at him. "What?"

"What?" Jekyll repeated.

"Are you insane?" she cried. "Look any other time I might agree with you-"

"Hey!" protested Nick.

"-But this – this is madness!"

Jekyll gave a groan - it seemed that he was suddenly in a lot of pain. He stumbled over to his desk, withdrawing an injector needle from a drawer.

"We have to go-" Malik tried to remain calm.

"Now," urged Jenny, reaching out to take Elerie's arm.

"What's happening?"

"Just go!"

"Nick!"

Jekyll's face had darkened and he was now approaching Nick, wearing a malicious grin.

"Elerie!" But the exit was sealed, locking her and Nick inside with the new Jekyll while Malik and Jenny had escaped.

"Mr. Hyde," she whispered.

"What?" said Nick.

"Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde."

"You're kidding me, right?" cried Nick. Jekyll - or, now Hyde - growled at them. "Get back!" Nick told her. For once she didn't object.

Pretty soon, Nick was engaged in a fight with Jekyll - or Hyde. Elerie obeyed and stayed back, though Nick was getting his arse kicked badly.

Hyde tossed Nick as though it were nothing, sending the man crashing into a bookshelf, knocking it down. Then he moved towards Elerie.

"Ellie – no," an unstable Nick said as Hyde approached her. Nick threw himself at Jekyll - or Hyde, or whoever he was - slamming him into the wall.

While Jekyll was distracted fighting Nick, Elerie came up behind him with the injector and struck him in the back. This froze Jekyll and Nick took this as a chance to grab the man by the front of his jacket and toss him over the desk and into the wall.

She gave a yelp. "Was that really necessary?" she cried.

"Just to be sure," he responded, already running for the now clear door. "Now come on!"

Through the commotion, Elerie spotted Jenny. "Jen! Which way out?!"

"I don't know!"

"You work here!" She turned to see Nick had stopped and was staring down at where Ahmanet knelt, still chained up. The mummy was looking up at him expectantly. Ellie jumped in. "Come on, keep moving!" She practically shoved him out of the room, and could hear Ahmanet yelling after them.

Finally they found a door. Instead of leading outside, it led into the main hall of the museum.

"Come on, I know the way out from here!" she cried and he was quick to follow.

A deep, chilling chanting had erupted from below them in an ancient tongue - Ahmanet. Her chanting filled the whole hall, her ancient words surrounding them, threatening to consume them.

This was followed by an ear-splitting scream, which shattered every piece of glass around them. They sprinted for the exit, being chased by the spray of glass.

When they at last made it out of the museum, remarkably still in one piece, they found that London had been consumed by a vicious sandstorm.

"Nick!" Nick turned to see Vail's ghost, completely un-phased by the storm, standing a ways down the street, waving to him. "Let's go!"

"I've got to go."

"What?" cried Elerie.

"I've got to do this. Stay safe." He kissed the top of her head and was gone.

She stood there, frozen. A nearby window that cracked with the force of the storm made her jump and snapped her from her trance.

She whipped out her mobile phone from her coat pocket. "Jenny. Remind me of the address of the crusader tomb."

That scene where Ahmanet breaks free and unleashes her power on London is one of my favourite scenes in the movie - it's just so epic!

Thanks so much for reading and I hope you enjoyed! :)
