2.074 Inches of Rainfall

SAM POV

I looked through the window of the car, peering through the rain, waiting in the driver's seat. Blake sat, doing the same. We were in Blake's car, awaiting the arrival of Miroslav Korda, our newest suspect.

"Why didn't you shoot?" Blake asked suddenly.

I turned to him. "Sorry?"

"Well, back there, Nathaniel had a gun, he could've killed me." Blake explained. "Why didn't you shoot?"

"I prefer to have all of the information before I make a decision." I informed him. "I try to make rational choices when possible."

"Come on, you had a fraction of a second to react. He could've whacked me before you had time to move." Blake complained.

Seeing the irony here, I couldn't resist, and turned back to him again, a slight smirk on my face.

"Oh, I'm sorry. I thought you were a tough guy. A street cop who's been through the mill." I teased. "I didn't think you'd scare so easily."

I turned away and heard Blake growl, "Why don't you fuck off, Samantha?"

I couldn't resist. This time, I really did smirk. Any further comments were stopped when I spotted the tall, muscular bald man with dark eyes, clad in nondescript clothing, emerge from a nearby building.

"That's him."

We quickly exited the car and began to approach him. As we did so, Blake called out to him.

"Miroslav Korda?"

"Yeah?" he snapped, turning to us.

As he did, I showed my badge while Blake introduced himself.

"Lieutenant Carter Blake, I'd like to ask you some questions."

Korda sighed and began to walk in the direction of the car. A moment later, he suddenly threw his coffee in Blake's face and shoved me.

Blake yelled. "Shit! Don't just stand there, he's gonna get away!"

So I turned and began to run, Korda was heading towards a nearby food market, across the busy road. Silently cursing, I pursued, having to dodge around a couple of cars and slide over the hood of another. I grimaced, this was not how I saw my day going, especially as the rain made everything even more precarious. Luckily, I kept my balance and almost caught up with Korda, but then he ducked into said food market and I followed him inside.

The place was crowded, which just made chasing Korda that much harder. Running down an aisle, I tried to weave through the customers, who seemed unaware of what was going on.

"FBI! Stop at once!" I cried, not so much to stop Korda, but to warn the other people that a criminal was on the loose.

Taking a sharp turn and continuing my pursuit of Korda, I nearly slipped. Several trays of ice had been spilled, no doubt deliberately by Korda. Still, I pressed on, slipping and sliding, but staying on my feet and continuing the pursuit. I leapt up onto a nearby counter to get around a blocked path and tackled Korda to the ground.

He recovered faster than I did, unfortunately, and ran off again, buying himself some time by opened a cage of live chickens. Not an easy thing to work through, but once I did, I caught a glimpse of Korda slipping through a nearby door and I ran over to it. Stopping just inside, I gasped for air, my breath rising in a mist from my mouth as I was now in a cold storage locker. Drawing my gun, I looked around wildly, trying not to let my tempter get the better of me.

'Damn, this place is freezing. My hands are numb.' I thought to myself, before realizing that I was alone. 'Where the fuck is Blake?'

Anxiously, I began to advance, looking around at the hanging meat in distaste. The smell was unreal and I once again felt grateful that I was a vegan.

'No way he's escaping! I'm gonna get that bastard!' I told myself, trying to stay on track.

Then, as I passed the last hanging meat on the current rack, I yelped, dropping my gun as Korda lunged from behind it and struck me. Grimacing, I blocked his next strike and the one right after it before countering with a blow of my own. Korda stumbled, but recovered quickly and shoved me down.

Then, I saw it in his hands: a meat hook. I quickly rolled to the side, narrowly dodging the vicious weapon. Getting to my feet, I dodged again, the hook becoming lodged in one of the hanging meats. I took this chance to strike his arm, forcing him to let go. Grabbing the meat hook, an idea came to me and I dodged the next strike before hooking the collar of Korda's jacket and pulling him, face first, into the meat.

Dazed, but by no means defeated, Korda lashed out and knocked the meat hook from my hands. But I quickly grabbed a nearby shovel and struck hard. Korda grunted and then fell to the ground, out cold.

I slumped over, hands on my knees, fighting for breath as Blake finally entered the room, looking down at the unconscious Korda.

"This time, it looks like we got our Origami Killer." he commented.

I hoped that he was right, so I just stepped back, letting Blake cuff Korda before we left, heading back to the station.
