Marinette swam towards the boat for the second time that week. She knocked on the hard, barnacle-covered wood, inspecting each crevice and dent. She had seen it the other day, the anchor set in place. She couldn't bring herself to come out of the water and look to see if anyone was aboard.
Alya had warned her yesterday not to go back, especially not alone but she was curious, she couldn't help it. It hadn't moved since she had found it so she assumed it was safe.
Adrien walked on the deck of his ship. One of the sails on the ship ripped with a strong storm, and it had taken a few days to fix it.
"It's finished Captain," one of his crew members nodded.
"Alright, boys let's catch dinner before we sail off," Adrien yelled to his crew. They excitedly shouted back.
"Uh, captain…" Nino, his second-hand man, called out to him. Adrien came to the side of the boat. His eyes widened in shock to match Nino's.
A woman. No more than that. A mermaid was tangled in the net. She had dark blue hair, as deep as the ocean depths that reached her hips. She had a tail of pink scales that glowed in the daylight. The scales also covered her breasts. Here and there the scales were black. She was captivating. Adrien checked if anyone else saw. The other crew members' view was obscured by his chambers.
"Bring her inside to my room," Adrien opened his cabin door. "And make sure no one else knows about this." He knew he could trust Nino. She didn't struggle, just quietly watched with scared baby blue eyes as they carried her away from her home.
They drew a tub full of water and sat her inside. She seemed more comfortable inside the water. The tub was placed beside a window, so she could look outside. The man named Nino left and she was alone with the Captain.
"Can you understand what I'm saying?" he asked. She just stared at him from inside the edge of the tub. He sighed, running a hand over his face. He didn't even know what he planned on doing with the thing. It was a quick decision he hadn't even thought it was just instinct.
He left her, locking the door behind him. She sunk down into the tub. What had she gotten herself into? What would her family and friends think? She had to find a way to get out of here soon. She leaned against the edge of the tub, looking out of the window. They had started moving across the waves at a good speed. She hummed a song from her home.
On the deck, they had a small controlled fire to cook the fish they'd caught. The crew was laughing and finally happy to be on the move.
"Do you hear that?" One of the sailors asked. A soft voice could be heard singing from somewhere close by.
"Maybe it's the sirens," another joked and they all laughed. Nino and Adrien looked at each other, no one else noticed the exchange. Adrien grabbed himself two grilled fish and escaped his crewmates.
The singing grew louder as he moved towards his chambers. The song was not in his native language. The song was full of sadness and longing. It pulled at his heartstrings even if he couldn't understand the words. He opened the door and the voice cut out quickly.
Marinette looked towards the door. Adrien stood in the doorway, holding a plate of food. He stepped in and locked the door. He carefully walked up to her so as not to scare her.
He cleared his throat. "That song was beautiful, but we can't have the crew know about you so if you're going to sing you might want to be quieter."
When she just looked at him he held out the fish to her. "I don't know what mermaids eat but uh this is what we have." She looked at it suspiciously. She wasn't sure why it was brown but it smelled delicious. She held back the urge to take it. She wasn't sure what his intentions were.
He set the food down on a table next to the tub, within her reach. He wanted to bathe but that wasn't an option with the occupant taking up the space. He threw himself into the bed. He struggled to sleep that night with all the thought of what he had gotten himself into. Somehow he drifted off.
Marinette heard his soft breathing as he slept. She poked the fish. It was slightly warm. She picked it up, nibbling on it. The flavor was so much stronger than in the ocean. She gobbled it down, letting a content sigh out. She watched the man toss and turn in his sleep. His blonde hair was mussed and he threw the blankets off every once in a while. All the mermen she knew didn't look like him at all. She felt herself drawn to him but she knew it wasn't a good idea to get attached.
The moonlight illuminated the room and the soft lull of the waves could be felt on the boat. She missed her home. She wondered what they were all doing or thinking. At some point, she would have to leave. She didn't understand why there was some reluctance.
She didn't know why but she felt surprisingly safe in the room with him. He hadn't hurt her or tried to rip her scales off. The mermaids back home always told scary stories about how horrible the humans were. She rested her chin on her arms and drifted off to sleep. Maybe she found a good one.
