"He looks like he's having a great time…"
Tony nodded, smiling when he glanced over to the corner where photos were being taken. Still. He'd been over there, with his suit activated and taking individual photos with the kids – and a few adults who jumped at the very rare opportunity to have a picture with themselves, Ironman, Thor and the others all hanging our around them. The kids from Peter's school had been polite, and extremely eager – despite the looming form of the Hulk towering over them. When the other avengers (including Tony and Carol) had finished their photo obligations they all went back to whatever they'd been doing before. Tony had gone back to the table to sit with T'Challa and his mother, Pepper and Stephen.
Natasha was outside with Steve, and the others were intermingled – mostly talking to Thor, who had a group of SHIELD agents hanging around him like little kids usually hung around Tony and Steve when given the chance.
Bruce, however, had stayed, allowing the kids even more pictures when they started pulling out cellphones to do selfies and group shots. They couldn't post them to social media, yet, they knew, but when their networks worked again, there was going to be a flood of extremely rare pictures of the Incredible Hulk hanging out with Avengers, the unknown hero in the black cat-looking suit, and a small group of really lucky teenagers, who were going to be the envy of everyone who saw them.
At the moment, Hulk's arms were spread, shoulder height (to him) and Peter and one of his classmates were hanging off one arm, while Ned was trying to hang off the other with even Flash loosening up enough to hang as well. Of course, it would make a great photo for him, too. Shuri and the girls weren't really dressed for such shenanigans, but they were having a good time, too, and were laughing as Abe compared his own scrawny leg to that of the tree-trunk sized one beside him.
They'd had a lot of photos taken with Hulk, and were jumping in to photobomb others, occasionally.
"He's having a great time," Tony agreed.
"I do not understand why such a dangerous creature is willing to allow the children to climb on him like that," Ramonda said, uncertainly – even though she'd been watching them for almost an hour, now. "Why does he indulge them?"
Had it been someone else asking, Tony would have brushed the question aside, or not been quite as forthcoming. Since they knew more about the light that had been the result of Peter's snap, they could be told more than most.
"The light that healed the rest of the world had an interesting effect on him," he replied, looking at the teens just in time to see Peter pull himself up onto Hulk and stand on shoulders, posing for a photo with his own arms spread wide. Tony hesitated, forcing himself not to run over to make sure the boy didn't fall off. "He's… much less intense than he was before, and a lot calmer."
"Not any smaller, though," Pepper added, also watching the teens crawl all over the beast that was Bruce Banner at other times. Flash was trying to join Peter up on Hulk's neck – almost certainly seeing the merit of having a photo of himself looking so brave. Peter offered him a hand, and Pepper was pleased to see that he used the one that had been injured, which meant that he wasn't favoring it. "He's fully in control, though."
"Astounding," T'Challa muttered. "I did not see him at the battle for the compound…?"
"No," Stark said. "There would have been just as much chance that he might hurt someone on our side in his enthusiasm for destroying and smashing things."
"That makes sense." The young king looked at his mother. "We should be leaving soon."
"Yes. Unfortunately." She smiled at Tony and Pepper – also Stephen – and the turned to watch her daughter hand Flash back his cell phone once the young man had climbed off the Hulk. "I would like to see her reaction to the gift you obtained for her birthday."
Tony nodded.
"Then let's do that."
He stood up, smiling with the anticipation, and had Friday send Peter an alert to get the boy's attention. When Peter looked over, he jumped down from Hulk's shoulder slapped the green back with a smile of thanks and walked over.
"Everything okay?" the boy asked, looking concerned – as he always did.
"Yup. Get Shuri, will you? We're going to give her her present so T'Challa and Ramonda can get home and get their day started."
Peter's eyes lit up. He was anticipating that, too.
"Can I bring Ned?"
"If he wants to see it, yep."
Peter walked back through the thinning crowd and returned with Shuri, who had her hand in his, and Ned as well as MJ. The princess was beaming with excitement.
"Can I open my present?" she asked without preamble, as the teens drew close to Tony and Pepper.
"Go for it."
The girl freed her hand from Peter's and pulled the little box from where it had been tucked away. Out of sight, but rarely out of mind. She tore open the paper, eagerly, and opened the little nondescript box under the wrapping paper.
And frowned, looking up at Tony, and then Pepper and Peter.
"A key?"
They didn't use a lot of keys in Wakanda, Peter knew. So did Tony. He smiled.
"That's right."
"I do not understand."
Her brother, who knew what the gift was, of course, smiled, as well.
"Perhaps you are not asking the right questions," he said, amused. "What would you require a key for?"
"Not a lock. Or a safe." All of those locked electronically. "I-"
Peter's smile was pleased.
"Maybe you should look at the logo on the keychain?"
"It is a horse…"
"It's a Mustang," he corrected.
"Why would a horse need a key…?" she was even more confused, and it showed.
"One horse probably doesn't," Tony replied. "If there are 435 of them, though…"
Her eyes grew wide as she realized what he meant. She turned to Peter, and then looked at Ned and MJ, who were smiling, too. Then she looked back at Tony.
"Where?"
"Probably out front."
She squealed; a most undignified noise, and turned toward the closest entrance.
"A princess does not run," T'Challa reminded her.
The girl took off like she'd been shot from one of Clint's bows, and Peter ran to catch up, followed by Ned and MJ. The adults hurried to follow, leaving Stephen alone at the table. He hesitated and then shrugged, got up and walked with much more dignity toward the same entrance Tony and T'Challa were vanishing through. He was curious to see her reaction, of course – and it was amusing to see the normally dignified princess act like any other teenager.
Shuri had been at the compound enough times, now, to be familiar with every portion of it, really, and had no problem making her way through the quiet corridors toward the front exit – and entrance. The girl's momentum brought her through the heavy door that protected that entrance, but then she stopped so abruptly that Peter almost ran into her. He dodged to the side and Ned went to the other side, which gave MJ time to slow completely.
"Wow…" Shuri stared at the bright yellow convertible for a long moment – long enough that Tony, T'Challa, Pepper and Ramonda were able to catch up with them before she turned to Peter – who was still beside her. "Is it really for me?"
"We thought you might like it," Tony said, before Peter could.
"Not that there are a lot of roads in Wakanda," Pepper said. "but your brother promised to have some built – at least a track to allow you to have your own fun with a convertible, since Peter won't let you drive his."
"She crashed every time she's driven," the boy reminded them.
"I have only driven once," Shuri pointed out, smiling, broadly.
"That's a 100% failure rate," Tony said. "Not the best argument for being allowed to drive someone else's car." He smiled, pleased. "Do you like it?"
The girl threw her arms around him.
"I love it. Thank you."
