"Hi, Lexi Morrow checking in. I had a 10 o'clock," Lexi told the woman behind the desk.
"I can get you checked in. Just need a copy of your ID and insurance and you to fill out these forms while you wait."
"Perfect. Here ya go," Lexi handed the woman her cards and waited for the copies to be made. After getting her cards back, she went to sit down next to her mother and started filling out the paperwork.
"I thought they sent your information from Seattle over already?" Gemma asked Lexi glancing at the paperwork.
"They did. This is all HIPPA forms and family history. Normal hospital stuff."
"I see."
Lexi finished the paperwork just as the nurse called her into the back. Rising from her seat she started to the hall before Gemma started following her. "I'll be good Ma."
"Well I guess I'll be here when you get done," Gemma told her in a huff sitting back down.
The nurse got Lexi in, took her urine sample and her vitals before going through the long list of questions. Once finished she informed Lexi the specialist would be back soon to see her.
Lexi lay on the exam table thinking of how crazy her life had become overnight. This was the first appointment for the baby Happy had ever missed. She hadn't physically checked her phone but she knew from lack of vibration that Happy nor Kozik had contacted her. She was trying not to let her mind wander but the fact that she hadn't heard from them made her mind race with worry. The knock on the door brought her back to the matter at hand.
"Lexi?" Asked a familiar voice entering the room.
"Tara?" Lexi was shocked to see her brother's ex and high school sweet heart. "What are you doing here? What happened to Chicago?"
"Dad passed a while back and I finally got some time to come take care of everything. Figured it was time to come clean out his place and get it sold."
"Ohh Tara! I'm so sorry! Are you okay?"
"Thanks. I'll get there. I hadn't been home since I left so there's definitely regrets. But what about you? I thought you were going to run as soon as you could. Please tell me you didn't get lured into the life from a club member," Tara said hopeful her friend had made it further in life than an old lady.
"Well I did run. Got my CNA license and working at Seattle general then bartending in my spare time. I ended up falling for a SAMTAC member and the rest was history," she explained with a chuckle. "Little one has the family flaw though so my OB makes sure we're constantly monitored."
"Aww Lex. As long as you're happy. I'm sure it's different being around SAMTAC then here," Tara said with remorse in her eyes. Both girls had the same mindset about this subject. The club was and would always be toxic.
"Wouldn't know. Kozik is the only member up there who knows about me. I pretty much hide in our house. I have no interaction with the club there."
"Well I guess that's one way. Looking at your charts your BP is a bit high, do they have you on medication for that?" Tara asked getting back to the subject at hand. Lexi shook her head so Tara continued, "I'll send in a script for that. Let's listen to the little one and see how that's going."
Tara got the doppler out and ready before adding the gel to Lexi's abdomen. She hunted for about 2 minutes trying to find the baby's heartbeat before she called the nurse back into the room. "Jen, get me the mobile ultrasound unit please."
"What's wrong?" Lexi questioned starting to worry.
"I'm sure everything is fine. I just want to have an easier way to hear the heartbeat and the ultrasound machines read better than the dopplers," Tara reassured her. "Plus we get the visual so you'll get to see the little one too."
The nurse returned with the mobile machine and got it set up for Tara. After she added more gel, she started swirling the wand around Lexi's abdomen to find the baby. Lexi held her breath until she heard that second heartbeat sounding through the speaker. Looking at the screen with tears in her eyes she could see her little baby rolling around in her womb.
"Lexi, when did you have your last ultrasound?" Tara asked.
"Umm, my original one. The next one was scheduled in a couple weeks then we had to come here for club business," she answered now curious as to what was going on.
"Hun, looking at this, your babe doesn't have your family's heart defect."
"What are you talking about Tara? What's wrong?"
"Nothing's wrong. Lexi you're pregnant with twins. That would explain the unsteady heartbeats your doctor heard. It's not hard to miss on the initial check. How you aren't showing more than you are, I have no clue. Look here."
Lexi watched as Tara showed her the outline of the second baby on the screen. Instantly she burst into tears. She wished more than anything that Happy was with her. He should be here to be a part of this. Looking back at the screen she could see the twins holding hands.
"Can you tell what they are?"
"I'm not an expert, but I'm thinking they're boys. You're definitely in for a wild ride mama."
"Oh boy that's the truth," Lexi replied with a tearful chuckle. Suddenly her phone started ringing.
"I'll let you get that and get cleaned up while I call in your script," Tara told her leaving the room.
"Thanks Tara. For everything. Hello?" She asked answering her phone not recognizing the number.
"Hey." Asked a gruff voice on the other end.
"Hap?"
"Yeah baby. Are you okay?"
"I'm fine. Where are you? Are you okay?"
"I'm sitting in county. They're trying to pin me on bogus destruction of property charges but Lee is working on it with our lawyer since Lowen's firm was no help. I don't have much time but I needed to fill you in on the plan. He knows about us and you can trust him. He's sending Koz back for you. Do not tell anyone he's coming for you. In my dorm room, there's a safe in the bottom of the closet. The combo is Ma's birth--"
"Happy slow down," She cut him off. "I'm so confused. What happened? If you're in jail, why am I going home? I'm not leaving you."
"Lexi I need you back in Tacoma. I need you under the protection of SAMTAC. In the safe is money and a gun. Keep the gun on you until you're back with Kozik. Take the money home with you. I'm going to keep communication with you through the club. I can't have people in here knowing they have something they can use against me. The club is going to take care of you until I get home. Listen to what Lee and Koz tell you. I need you and the baby safe and that's back home in Tacoma."
"Babies."
"Huh?"
"Babies, it's twins. The doctor did an ultrasound at my appointment. She doesn't think they have the heart defect. Their hearts just don't beat in sync so it sounds similar to what the defect would."
"That's great news baby. I can't wait to hold you all in my arms. I'll be out and home soon okay? This will probably be the last time I can talk to you til I get out."
"Just come home to us. I love you."
" I love you too, Sweets."
