The first month as a surgical intern was pretty rough. The hours alone almost killed me. Days I'm off I usually spent doing laundry and catching up on sleep. I don't do much else. I wondered if Derek is doing just as bad as I am. I asked Mrs. Shepherd how Derek was doing, and it made me feel a little better knowing he's doing just as bad as I am.

When I am at the hospital, I feel like everyone is watching me. I've heard people say I'm the surgeon to watch out for. I think they're only saying that because of who my mother is. I think there are better surgeons than me in this program. I wish there weren't such high expectations of me being as amazing as my mother.

I was supposed to find a place of my own to live in, but because of how busy I've been, I haven't been able to find any time to go apartment hunting. I talked to my mom about it, and she told me I can stay with her as long as I'm doing my program.

Month two in the program, I was given the opportunity to do the first surgery. It was a simple procedure, just removing the appendix. All my fellow interns were up in the gallery to watch me either fail or succeed. I'd be lying if I said I wasn't nervous. As I was making the first cut, my heart felt like it was going to burst out of my body it was beating so fast. Once I had successfully completed the surgery, I was finally able to breath and have a sense of relief. The general surgeon who was running the OR congratulated me, and complemented me on my suture.

I went out for drinks with the interns in my group. I wouldn't call them friends quite yet, though I think I was able to prove my surgical abilities today. They thought I got into this program because of my mom, but I just proved them today why I'm here. I could have dropped the appendix. I could have cut something I wasn't supposed to cut. I didn't. My first solo surgery was a success.

Mom was home by the time I got home. I told her about the surgery. She wasn't as proud as I thought she would be. She simply congratulated me on not screwing up one of the easiest surgeries out there. I'll admit her reaction did disappoint me.

Not much happened the next few months. I participated in more surgeries, and they got more advance as we went on. I also rotated services once a week. At the moment I'm enjoying working in the neuro department.

Thanksgiving seemed to come in a blink of an eye. One moment it's the end of July, and I'm beginning my program. The next moment it's the end of November and holiday season. Mom of course worked on Thanksgiving, and I decided I'd do the same. The other day Mrs. Shepherd invited me over for Thanksgiving. I told her I'd stop by after my shift.

I was semi expecting Thanksgiving to be a slow, boring day, but was I wrong. No wonder why mom worked on Thanksgiving and every other holiday. There are more interesting cases than on normal days.

My shift ended at six, and I pulled into the driveway of my house just before seven. Next door, I could see some of the Shepherd clan through the house window. I debated going over. I felt like it was too late to stop by. They probably already had eaten, and I shouldn't disturb their family time. I decided to go inside my house, and eat leftovers from the pervious night for dinner.

I reheated the food in the microwave, and sat down at my table. I decided to call Lexie to wish her a Happy Thanksgiving. As I was talking to her, I heard my doorbell. I got up from the table to answer still talking to her. I paused when I opened the door seeing who was in front of me. Derek.

"Hey, I have to go. Tell Molly Happy Thanksgiving for me." I told Lexie. I hung up and looked at Derek. "What are you doing here?"

"Mom said you were going to come over." Derek said.

"I changed my mind. I didn't want to interrupt your guys' night."

"You weren't going to interrupt. Mom and dad were expecting you."

"So did you just come over to tell me how I disappointed your parents by not showing up?" I asked. "You could have just called to tell me that."

"Is your mom home?" Derek asked.

"No, it's just me."

"Come over then."

Just as I was going to respond, I heard a woman call for Derek. I didn't recognize the voice as his mom or one of his sisters. I looked towards the Shepherd house and saw a red-headed woman making her way over.

"Derek, your mom is cutting the pie. Are you coming?"

Derek wrapped his arm around the woman when she reached him. "Addison, this is Meredith. We were close friends growing up."

"We were more than just close childhood friends, Derek. We used to date."

"Oh..." Addison was forcing a smile on her face. She looked at Derek. "It's a little chilly out here. I'm going to head back in. You'll be in soon?"

"Yes." Once Addison was gone, Derek stared at me. "You didn't have to tell her we used to date."

I shrugged. "She should know. I would want to know."

Derek frustratedly sighed. "Are you coming over or not?"

"No."

"Is it because I brought Addison?"

"She doesn't seem like your type."

"And what is my type? You?" Derek asked. "How can you even determine that by just looking at her?"

"Just one of my special gifts."

"I'll just tell them you're too tired to come. Bye Meredith."

I immediately regretted how I acted. "Derek!" I called after him. He stopped and turned his head. "Are you happy?"

"I am. Are you?"

"I'm happy you're happy. Tell the Shepherds Happy Thanksgiving for me, and sorry I didn't stop by."

I shut my front door, and sighed as I collapsed onto the couch. It's time to move on from Derek Shepherd and his family, just like he has with me.
