Hey it's been a while! Sorry it took me a millennia to write this chapter! I did figure out a lot of details though to fill in the black spots of the plot! Hope you guys like it!
And of course thank you for the support and reviews, I love to read them! Mwah!
Three's A Crowd
…
Amara's butt ached from the long trip from one end of Los Angeles to the other in the most indirect route possible. At least the costal regions were mostly clear of long line ups of vehicles escaping the nuclear fallout. It was nearly two in the morning when the trio were finally nearing Mi Sun's condo.
Mi Sun was currently on the phone with either Ling or Ilene—their voices were difficult to tell apart even in person. From what Amara could overhear, it sounded like Mothra was about to emerge. Everyone was in agreeance that it was a bad sign and most likely had something to do with the earthquake.
There was lots of talk about that too. Before Mothra came up in Mi Sun's phone conversation, she talked at length about what could have caused it. It sounded like a few people from Monarch were going to the location with a military escort.
Mi Sun didn't explicitly state that Whyley had reviled Jonah had a base there, but she did suggest it as a possibility. Other than them, no one knew Jonah's whereabouts, or even if he survived Godzilla's retaliation in Costa Rica.
Long Beach was dark and quiet. Amara turned off cruise control and did a rather jerky downshift exiting off the highway towards Mi Sun's place. Not only was the shifter on the opposite side since the vehicle was from Japan, Whyley was sitting beside her, probably silently judging her driving. Mi Sun had insisted that she would sit in the back so she could keep an eye on him.
Mi Sun said her goodbye's and hung up her phone, putting it into her jacket pocket. "Well, no one has any idea where Godzilla is. They can only assume he's somewhere in the Pacific, which doesn't help much."
For every bit of her that wanted to know where Godzilla was, another knew it was better if she didn't. If anyone found out his location, the military would be the first to get to him. Without the connection, there was no way of finding him otherwise.
Whyley turned his head back towards Mi Sun. "No doubt Jonah is trying to find him as well. As bad as it sounds, Jonah fining him first could be our chance. We would only have to deal with him instead of the entire military."
"Yes, Jonah and his army, no problem for the three of us." Mi Sun glared at Whyley from the rear-view mirror when he turned back around. "What does he plan to do with Godzilla when he finds him anyway? Bomb him?"
Whyley grimaced. "Jonah's been hard to read since Boston. No one really knows what's going on in his head anymore. I thought his vendetta was against humans and that he was showing them—us that the titans should be respected and left alone. His methods aren't great, but I thought he learned after Ghidorah."
Mi Sun's voice was uncharacteristically cold. "So you have no idea what he'll do."
Whyley adverted his eyes from the rear-view mirror and shook his head.
The last few minutes of the trip were made in silence. Amara pulled the SUV into the underground garage which now only had a few vehicles scattered throughout. The three of them got out without a word, grabbed their bags and headed to the elevator. The hallway was dark, the lights that normally illuminated it were off. They entered Mi Sun's condo single file. Whyley came in last and hung around the entrance while Amara and Mi Sun took off their shoes and went to the living room.
"I'm going to bed. Amara you can stay in the guest bedroom again." Mi Sun's eyes slid to the boy still standing by the door. "Whyley can sleep on the couch or the hallway, which ever is more comfortable."
"Goodnight," Amara said as Mi Sun went to her room, closing the door behind her.
Once Mi Sun was out of sight, Whyley walked into the living room. "I don't think she likes me much."
"At least she let you in."
"Yeah, probably more than I deserve."
Amara picked up her bag and turned towards the guest bathroom. "Just keep helping us out and she'll come around. You can steal one of the blankets and pillows off my bed to use on the couch."
Exiting the bathroom now ready for bed, Whyley was already laying on the couch wrapped in a blanket, his eyes focused on his phone. He had turned off all the lights save for the lamp in Amara's bedroom which he must have turned on.
Maybe she stood there too long. Whyley glanced at her for a moment before going back to his phone. "Goodnight." Was all he said.
"Goodnight," Amara said, going to the bedroom and closing the door. Well that was awkward.
She crawled under the blankets and laid back on the soft pillow. She closed her eyes in concentration for probably the hundredth time that day. Still no thread. No Godzilla. Only pain in her temples, like someone trying to pull out a knife imbedded in her skull.
How was she ever going to find him?
…
The morning of the second day at Mi Sun's house, Amara sat with Mi Sun and Whyley at a little round table near a sunny window looking out to an empty beach. Whyley had got up first and put a kettle of water on for tea.
This morning was much less eventful then the previous one. Amara had woken up to Mi Sun making a comment on Whyley's lack of taste. He had asked if she had any coffee judging by the terse conversation she opened the door into.
They all sat quietly around the table, the only sound coming from the clinking of a spoon as Whyley stirred instant coffee into his cup of hot water. Mi Sun looked out of the window out towards the water. Amara just looked between them, tea in her hands.
Yesterday hadn't gone well, they mostly did their own things. Mi Sun was on the phone and Whyley was on a borrowed laptop for most of the day. Amara watched the news, not being much use.
Most of it covered Los Angeles and calling out to people to report any sightings of Godzilla. There was only one man that mentioned the footage taken from the island before Godzilla lost it. It was of her reaching out to him moments before. Even on camera, his amber eyes were soft as they looked down at her tiny form, like a father would a child. Not her father, but someone's.
The man had asked if anyone knew her identity from the footage and to report that as well. She had the volume turned down, so hopefully the others didn't overhear it.
Now they were finally sitting here to discuss ways to find Godzilla, yet no one would speak. She was probably going to be the one to have to do it, now the mediator of the two. She just had to find a way to start the conversation without it sounding awkward. Maybe starting with something else instead would work better.
"Did Rick and Sam make it out without being caught?"
Mi Sun looked at her. "Yes. They weren't injured so they went straight back to Monarch before anyone could start asking questions."
She probably wasn't going into detail because of Whyley's presence. At least they were communicating today. "That's good."
"As long as no one investigates the hospital, my connection with Monarch should go unnoticed as well," she said gazing at one of her plants on the windowsill.
Whyley straightened, his eyes on Amara. "What about you?"
"What about me?"
"Did anyone else know who you were on the island? Did you show your face?"
Amara shook her head. "No, of course not. We did think it through, you know."
Whyley dropped the subject. If he did see the segment about identifying her on the television, he didn't mention it.
Mi Sun's eyes darted between the two, analyzing them.
"I looked through all the files I could find on Jonah's base in Russia. There is a large lab presence there, one hundred and six scientists to be exact."
Mi Sun sipped her tea. "Let me guess, you couldn't find anything about what they are working on?"
"No, those files are secure. It'll take me some time to get into them."
"Wait, you're a hacker?" Amara asked. That was kind of cool.
Whyley half shrugged. "I did espionage training in the past. Found out I'm good with computers."
Mi Sun didn't hide her disapproving look, but surprisingly didn't make any comment.
Amara added more milk to her tea. "Did you do that until you joined the Titan Defence force?"
"Alliance," he corrected. "And yeah. They didn't have anyone there with my skill set, so they let me on despite my lack of experience."
"So you applied to join it?"
"Yeah, I saw the opportunity to be around titans and took it."
"Did you join Jonah before or after?" Mi Sun asked, joining the conversation.
"After. Jonah found my skill set appealing as well."
Mi Sun stared him dead in the eye. "And why ever did you decide to join him I might ask?"
Whyley looked into his cup. "I realized that the UNTDA was just as much against the titans as it was for them. I wanted to defend them and I thought that the alliance had the same mindset. Of course I was wrong, instead of working with scientists and being trained to understand them, we were constantly told how dangerous they were and how to effectively destroy them humanely.
It wasn't long after that one of my teammates with similar feelings came up and told me about Jonah. He told me Jonah was the only one who was truly looking out for the titans and looking for ways for us to coexist." He let out a breath. "I obviously fell for it."
Mi Sun frowned. "After everything he's done? You just became one of his goons, no questions asked?"
"I thought he'd realized his mistake. He's far from a good person, but I believed he was the only chance we have to save the titans. I let myself be manipulated by him because of my own beliefs."
"And what changed your mind?" Mi Sun's tone wasn't as hard as it was previously.
"Amara did." He made eye contact for a second then looked out the window. "I saw her connection with Godzilla immediately. There was no way she could be in the same place at the same time twice. I saw first hand on the beach back on Vancouver Island that Godzilla was there because of her. I watched him rise out of the water and walk straight over to her. When she yelled, he roared. When she ran, he covered her. It was amazing and terrifying. I thought she was the key to bridging humans and titans together if given the opportunity, so I told Jonah about her." He abruptly shut his mouth. His eyes were glassy when they turned back to Amara. "I'm so sorry."
Amara's throat tightened painfully. He truly meant it.
"It wasn't till after you went back home that I learned about the details of what happened. I thought he would have treated you better. There wasn't much I could do other than ask to be the one to deal with you directly from then on. No one deserves to have a gun pointed at their head."
Amara stayed quiet. The lump in her throat grew larger with each word Whyley spoke. It was like a weird therapy session hearing him open up like that, not only for her, but him as well.
Mi Sun looked conflicted as she stared at Whyley.
A buzz cut off the silence and Whyley reached into his pocket and pulled out his phone. A phone number was displayed over his family faces. He hastily whipped his eyes and answered.
"Hello?"
Chattering filled the other line. Whyley furrowed his brows before realization dawned on his face. "Kore wa dare desu ka?"
Amara blinked at his sudden language change.
"Hai Geiru desu." A pause. "Tao? Hontou ka? Hisashiburi!"
Amara and Mi Sun looked at each other while Whyley continued his conversation.
"Is that Japanese?" Mi Sun questioned.
Amara tilted her head. "Yeah, I think so."
They both listened to the rest of Whyley's conversation in quiet fascination. To think, Whyley was fluent in another language. It was jarring to hear the foreign words roll off his tongue like is was his native language.
A few minutes passed before Whyley said the familiar phrase of thank you in Japanese and hung up the phone. He took a deep breath.
Mi Sun placed her cup on the table. "Care to explain?"
"That was my old friend Tao. He lives on a small island of Japan. I haven't talked to him in years." Whyley's voice was distant, like he was recalling old memories.
It looked like Mi Sun was about to go back to their pervious topic but Whyley spoke first.
"He says he knows where Godzilla is."
Amara opened her mouth, but nothing came out despite all the questions that swarmed her thoughts. Was this a coincidence? Was anything coincidence anymore? There was no way…he had to be lying. But why would he lie after everything he just said?
Mi Sun put her cup down. It thudded against the table. "Your friend? How does he know that?"
"He didn't go into detail, something about the fish. But I believe him. He knows my position in the UNTDA and cares about Godzilla as much as I do."
"He knows you well enough to just call you up and tell you out of the blue?"
"We've been friends since we were kids. I lived with his family when I visited Japan with my mother, we've kept in touch ever since."
He lived in Japan when he was a kid? Had a friend that loved Godzilla? This wasn't coincidence, it was fate. It had to be. "Where in Japan does he live?" Amara finally asked.
"Yonaguni Island. It's the western most island of Japan, not far from Taiwan."
Mi Sun frowned. "That's a strange place to visit."
"My mom loved Japan, but she preferred the rural locations. She was an interpreter. Normally worked a month on and a month off, flying back and forth from Iowa to Tokyo like it was nothing. It was during the summer holidays that she decided to stay an extra month and bring me, my dad, and my sister along for vacation. That's when I met Tao."
Mi Sun leaned back in her chair and crossed her arms. "Alright, granted all this is true, how do you purpose we get there? Flights aren't exactly running on schedule at the moment."
"I have a friend who will probably help us out."
Oh no, another friend. "Is he a good guy or a bad guy?"
"Technically bad, but he's in the same boat as me. Doing it for the titans, not Jonah I mean. I think you've already met him, Amara. We call him D, his name is Matt Downey."
D? He must have been one of the men that kidnapped her, but which one? They all used letters for their names.
Whyley must have seen confusion on her face. "I've heard he's the one that challenged you to a fight and you immediately threw him down." He had a slight smirk on his face. It may have been something to do with the fact she'd thrown him down too.
That could only mean he was the one that broke into Mi Sun's condo and challenged her. "He's the one with the crush on the blonde guy. I remember him."
Mi Sun watched their conversation with a neural expression. At lest she wasn't glaring at Whyley as much.
Whyley shook his head with a smile. "The blonde guy, A is Henry Anthony. He's kind of an asshole." He looked at Amara. "He wouldn't be involved, just Matt. He's a nice guy and happens to be a pilot."
"Won't Jonah notice his men going rogue?" Mi Sun asked.
"He's pretty intent on whatever's going on in Russia, so I doubt he'd even notice or care. Not to mention Matt does his own thing all the time, gives guys rides home across the world with Jonah's permission or not. He's pretty integral to the team so he has pretty good job security."
Mi Sun needed more convincing. "I thought Jonah ran a tight ship."
"When he's focused on it. He's far from perfect."
"And the military?"
"I already have it handled. Our forces are spread thin right now. I have another friend covering me for that. I already called my dad too, in case I'm declared KIA."
"What did you tell him what you were doing?"
Whyley faltered for a moment before answering. "I told him I was doing what mom would want me to do."
Mi Sun accepted his answer with no further comment.
Ask much as Amara wanted to ask what happened to his mother, she didn't. She'd seen her face many times now on the background of Whyley's phone. The woman with a huge grin on her face.
But now that she envisioned the woman in her mind, she was paler than the rest of the family, and her dark hair was thin and dull. Deep bags covered by makeup but unhidden from the shadow circled under her sparkling eyes. Had she been sick?
Whyley got up with a slight stretch. "I'm going to call Matt now." He made his way across the room and sat at the desk where Mi Sun's laptop was set up.
As Whyley began to talk on the phone, Amara turned to Mi Sun. "You have to admit, he is useful to have around."
Mi Sun's expression immediately softened to her usual brighter one. "That's only because he has the connections we don't."
"Do you believe him?"
"I want to. He seems like a genuine person, but at the same time it could be an act. He said himself that he was trained in espionage."
It was too good to be an act though, wasn't it? "I think he's just trying to be transparent with us. He answered every one of your questions."
"He's a trained spy though, Amara. This could all be an act."
"Why would he try sending us to Yonaguni Island then? Is his friend in on it too?"
"We'd have to go to find out. Neither of us have the skill to out interrogate him even if we tried, so it's the only option."
"I could ruff him up a little."
Mi Sun giggled along with her. "Please no wrestling with boys in my living room." She sobered up with a sigh. "He does have us wrapped around his finger, though. I don't think we should tell anyone. The less people that know, the better our chances at keeping Godzilla safe."
Amara nodded. She was right. Monarch was being forced to work hand in hand with the government and military to find and finish off Godzilla for good. As bad as it sounded, the earthquake was at least a distraction. She rubbed her temples.
"You still have that headache?"
"Yeah. Probably punishment for what I did."
Mi Sun leaned over and put a gentle hand on Amara's shoulder. "You'll see him again. We'll find him with or without Whyley's help."
"Something about the fish," Amara echoed Whyley's earlier words. "That's what we're going on. Do you think Whyley could have made that up?"
Mi Sun's eyes narrowed mischievously. "It does sound pretty…fishy."
"Oh my god, Mi Sun, that was horrible!"
She leaned back with a delighted smile. "Why thank you. I'll be here all evening."
The creak of the office chair caught their attention. Whyley was looking at them as if they were aliens. "Are you guys for real?"
"I don't recall inviting you to our girl talk," Mi Sun answered, chin high.
Whyley made a face and shook his head as if ridding himself from the nonsense. "Matt will meet us at the local airport tomorrow morning. So pack your things."
Amara cracked her neck. "What's the weather like there?"
"You know how hot it is here?" Whyley answered her question with one of his own.
"Yeah."
"Hotter than that."
Mi Sun stood. "I have some shorts you can borrow." She turned to Whyley. "You're on your own."
Whyley gave an amused huff. "I'll buy some stuff when I get there."
It was hard to see Whyley as a bad guy. Mi Sun was right that it could all be an act, but it seemed unlikely. He worked for the bad guy, but he never really acted like he was the bad guy.
Besides, what could there be on a tiny Japanese island closer to Taiwan than Tokyo?
…
I don't know Amara, what could there be? Find out next time on DAYS of our… I forgot what I called it. Anyway, hope you enjoyed it! Sorry it too approximately one eternity for me to write!
