The dungeons of Hogwarts would never be considered a warm and overly welcoming place. One wouldn't just think to themselves, 'hey, let's go hang out in the Dungeons for the fun of it!' Yet after finishing their dinner and getting their laughs at the Gryffindors done, that was precisely what they were doing. Well, to be fair, two of them actually did live in the dungeon, so they were just going to their rooms. But Harry and Daphne didn't have to anymore.
Much to the confusion of the others, Harry managed to lead them right to the common room. He just couldn't get in as he didn't know the password yet. "ummmm, Harry, how did you know where the common room was?" Asked Tracy in a bit of aw. Harry always seemed to know where all the secret spots were, and they were sure he was still keeping plenty to himself.
"Well… ah… you remember the whole heir of Slytherin mess last year?" They all nodded, "Well me and… those-who-suck… kind of thought Malfoy was the Heir."
The other three chuckled at this. "Ok, but how does that have anything to do with knowing where the common room is?" Asked Daphne.
"ah-hum, you see, we kind of brewed Polyjuice and used it to sneak in as Crabbe and Goyle. It was kind of funny seeing as Malfoy let us in himself as we didn't know the password." He had a light blush at his admission of weaseling his way into their midst a year before.
"Wait, so you snuck in as Crabbe and Goyle?" They all looked a bit queasy at the thought of having to drink a bit of those two. "That's just disgusting!" Said Blaise.
"True and completely useless, considering we didn't learn anything. At least nothing beneficial as we couldn't get back in unless we were let in." He hated thinking of his second year as a whole, but that was an interesting experience being someone else.
"I wonder if we could institute a separate password or something to verify someone asking what the password is who they say they are." Wondered Daphne. Harry loved the look when she got when deep in thought. One arm wrapped around her middle with her other elbow resting in her hand, finger tapping her lower lip.
"If we do that, no one would ever know if the bookends were them or not. Honor." Blaise joked before giving the password.
The wall opened to the crowded common room. It seemed quite a few people wanted to see what Harry was really like. It didn't help that Malfoy, who hadn't heard what Harry had told the house that morning, was standing in the middle of the room trying to get people to listen. He was currently going off on how Harry looked as his argument for not having him in their house.
"Listen to me, you fools! Why would we want someone who looks like a street urchin in the house of the cunning! He is not like us; he is nothing compared to someone like me!" He all but shouted the last part.
"Tell me, Malfoy, if I gave you two Galleons, would you shut up?" Harry asked, his anger rising just a bit. The soft mummer that had begun to permeate the air when he walked in had gone quiet. All were waiting for Malfoys response.
"I don't need your filthy money, Potter." The ponce spit. "Just you wait till my father hears this!"
"He will probably be upset you didn't take it. After all, I hear he has a few financial problems lately. Then again, maybe he's planning on getting it all back this summer with your… help." Harry replied, much to the amusement of the common room. It wasn't known just how much the Potters were worth, but they did know it was probably the wealthiest families in Britton. And Harry just happened to be the head of said family.
"How da…" Malfoy began before being cut off by one of the older students.
"Oh, shove off, Malfoy. No one cares what you have to say anymore." The boy wasn't overly tall, maybe five foot ten. He was also a little more… round than most of the other snakes. He was what Harry would call tubby, definitely not obese but not skinny either. Malfoy got a look on his face before slinking off to a dark corner. "My name is Michael Kreps, nice to meet you."
Harry took the offered hand. "Harry Potter, it is nice to meet you as well, Kreps."
"Since you are new here, I've been voted to be your inquisitor." Harry raised an eyebrow ever so slightly. "You see, we have found when trying to get information that concerned the house, that having one person ask questions is easier. I will ask questions of you for you to answer on behalf of the house."
"That seems efficient." However, he didn't know how he would get to know them if they were only getting to know him. He would have to be careful not to give too much away, either. Knowledge is power, after all. He fallowed Kreps the cluster of chairs and such in front of the fire as everyone crowded around them. Daphne squeezed his hand as they parted. He would have to do this alone. They each took a high back chair facing each other but canted so that the others could see their faces. It reminded Harry of a talk show his aunt would watch.
"So Potter, why has no one invited you to any of the socialite gatherings over the years?"
"They might have, but I had an illegal owl redirect placed on me." Harry heard a few mumbles from the crowed.
"Any ideas on who did that?"
"Oh, I have a few." A few smirked at his evasiveness.
"I see. And why have you never seemed to act to your station?"
"Well, I grew up not knowing much about this sort of thing. However, I am a fast learner." Many were wondering how he couldn't know what his station in their society was.
Kreps didn't comment on this. He could sense that whoever kept the other boy in the dark was whoever put the owl redirect on him. "Why have you seemed to hate Slytherins as a whole the last two years, only to suddenly being not only friends with three but married to one."
This was the question he was expecting to have been first on the docket. "Well, you see, I never truly hated Slytherins. I just had more than a few… unpleasant dealings with members of the house. That is until I meet Daphne." Harry could see her soft smile at this. "She showed me that not all snakes are like those I had the encounters with. So, through her, I meet the other two, and well, history was made. As to how I became married to one well, how could I not fall for someone as kind as she?"
The others in the house looked at a slightly blushing Daphne and snickered. "I see. Well, how do you feel about being one of us now?"
"So far, I find it… intriguing. There is definitely more to those in our house than meets the eye. I think that this arrangement could be… beneficial to those involved. Though I must say that the Gryffindors may regret their choices if tonight was any clue." Again, there were some chuckles.
"Well, Potter, I feel though this has been short, it was enlightening. I think I can speak for the house that we are… intrigued by what you may accomplish." Harry again shook Kreps hand as the older boy moved off to talk to others.
"You did well." Said Daphne as she and the others talked over. "Now, let me introduce you to some of our housemates."
It was a few hours later and just before curfew when the couple made it back to their quarters. Daphne had dragged him around the common room introducing him to many of the more prominent members. He had been given more questions on various topics, such as his view on muggles and muggle-borns, or who he thought would win the world cup. He was also able to ask questions as well. He now had a pretty good feel for his new house. As he had expected from his talks with his friends, most of the house was pretty decent. Malfoy and his ilk were just the loudest. Malfoy, Parkinson, and Nott were huddled in a corner the whole time, giving him nasty glares. They weren't happy with having a lion amongst them, former or otherwise. All in all, though, it was a pleasant experience for his first time in the pit.
A/N: Sorry this chapter is so short, but I felt it would have made the last chapter a bit too long. I thought it was also needed to establish how I see the house of snakes. I felt Rowling missed out on a lot of characters in the books. She had a school full of them but hardly ever touched on them. But what I really think was dirty was how she treated Slytherins. I don't see how one could be born evil, and even being raised by parents who weren't on the up and up doesn't mean you're going to be like them. Look at Harry. He was raised horribly even in the books and still turned out fine. Anyway, as always, I hope you enjoy reading as much as I love writing this, and thank you for the reviews.
