Her eyes widened slightly feeling his hand gently entwine itself in her hair and his arm wrap around her waist, hugging her to him gently. His head lightly nudged into hers and she closed her eyes, enjoying the warmth his body gave her.
"Stay…stay with me," he whispered and she nodded slowly.
One Year Later...
The books were successfully researched by Hange. Levi had read them and even Greer got through them. According to Grisha's books, there were nine titan shifters. They had four and the rest were over on Marley, where the titans apparently originated from.
And so, stood the nine titan shifters: Reiner the armored titan, Zeke the beast titan, Ymir the jaw titan, the unknown cart titan, Eren the original and the attack titan, Armin the colossal titan, Annie the female titan, and Evie, an unknown titan. This was a surprise, as they had all thought she was just another female, like Annie.
Another thought came into Greer's head and she glanced at Mikasa. The young girl's whole demeanor had changed when they learned the titan shifters had a life span of only thirteen years. She had recovered a few days after, but Greer knew she was in denial about that whole reveal. Greer briefly wondered how long Evie had left, if she was even still alive. Her thirteen years seemed to have been up some time ago.
Greer patted Chase's mane lovingly as he snorted for her attention. The past year they had successfully cleared the island of titans. It had been nonstop work, but Greer relished it. It kept her mind off other things. She barely slept and when she did it was only for a few hours and she was thankful they were dreamless. She knew Levi was concerned, but her main focus had become cleaning up the island and ridding it of all the titans.
People had begun moving back into Wall Maria and cleaning up the interior. Others got the approval to move back to their villages. A main road was even being constructed for easier travel. The island was safe once more. She glanced to the side as something caught her eye.
"Hey Armin, turn left up here," she said and Armin glanced back at her.
He was up front with most of the squad. Greer was in the back, allowing Chase to leisurely walk along. She didn't rush much these days.
"Left? Do you see something?" Armin asked and Greer smiled lightly.
"I think so," she said and he nodded confused.
"What is it?" Eren asked and Greer shrugged.
"Come see," she said and Chase turned left.
Levi turned seeing Greer turn with Armin and Eren.
"Hold on," he said and the rest of the squad paused.
Greer got off Chase and took Armin's hand pulling him towards a large thicket.
"What's the problem?" Levi asked and Greer turned to him.
"No problem here, Captain," she said and Levi frowned slightly.
"What is it?" Armin asked curiously.
"Look," Greer said pulling back some brush.
Armin's eyes grew wide with shock and awe.
The sea.
Greer smiled and Levi's eyes widened slightly. It was the first real smile he had seen from her in weeks. Armin turned to Greer with tears in his eyes and she chuckled as he threw his arms around her waist in a tight hug.
"T-Thank you," he choked out and she returned the hug gently.
He released her and stared out into the vastness of the sea.
"It's so blue," he whispered.
Greer watched as Armin and the rest of the squad stared hypnotized at the sea. And then Eren was pulling off his boots.
And the squad followed suit, pulling off their boots.
Greer chuckled lightly as Sasha dipped in a toe and squealed at the coldness. She grinned as Mikasa tried to get used to the feeling of the water and Armin picked up a seashell from the sandbank, his feet planted in the muddy water. Jean and Conny were wrestling in the sand and soon Sasha had tackled them both into the water playfully. Even Hange was touching different things in awe and excitement. Greer stared out into the vastness of the sea and felt her vision blur slightly. She moved further in, watching as the water rose to her thighs. She wondered how deep it went.
"Don't go out to far. We don't know what's in there," Levi spoke up, but Greer didn't acknowledge him and he was distracted by Hange touching something she probably wasn't supposed to.
Silence.
She felt a hand on her shoulder and turned to see Eren standing beside her; his face serious.
Silence.
"I used to think freedom was there...beyond the sea..." he said quietly and she stared at him.
He shook his head slowly.
"But that's not true. Our enemies are over there," he continued and finally looked at Greer.
"If we kill them all...will we finally have peace?" he asked weakly and her eyes saddened.
"I don't know," she whispered honestly and his eyes lowered.
Suddenly, she rubbed his head and smiled at him.
"But whatever happens, I'm with you," she said firmly and his eyes widened.
"W-Why?" he choked out and her smile widened.
"Because I love you, idiot," she mused and a tear slipped from his eye.
And then he leaned into her, hugging her slowly and burying his head in her shoulder. She returned the hug tightly, comforting him as best she could.
"I love you too."
Two Years Later...Wall Maria...
The squad moved to the Trost District, making it their new base of operations. They were each given their own houses to settle into. New recruits came in masses hoping to protect Paradis and keep it clear of the titans sent from Marley. They had only dealt with three infiltration attempts in the last two years. All three were stopped by Eren and Armin using their titan shifting abilities.
Greer found herself training mostly, but never really having to step into the battle anymore. She didn't mind though. The long break was welcomed. There wasn't a day that Evelyn wasn't on her mind. She wondered if she was still alive. She would interrogate the prisoners from the three separate infiltration attempts, but they never cracked...not even when Hange got to them.
"Greer," Hange called and Greer was snapped from her thoughts.
"Hm?" she asked and Hange rolled her eyes.
"Did you hear a word I said? Where's your head?" she scolded lightly.
Greer shook her head.
"Sorry," she murmured.
"I need you at the port today with the squad," she said and Greer nodded.
"We do this every month. They're not going to attack again," Floch spoke up and Hange shrugged.
"I have to go with my gut. And my gut says every day a squad patrols the port," Hange spoke and Greer stared at her.
Hange was a good commander. The meeting ended and Greer left with the squad to put on her gear. Then they were off to the port. Greer smiled lightly seeing the sea again.
"Should I transform?" Eren asked and Levi shook his head.
"That's not necessary. We sent scouts up ahead. They haven't reported anything unusual," he said as they emerged out of the brush.
A few remained back in the trees while the others stood on their horses patrolling the beach. The water was so still and blue. Greer loved watching it. Chase stopped walking and she looked at him.
"Come on Chase," she said letting her heel tap into his backside lightly.
He didn't move and Greer frowned.
"Chase, what's gotten—" she gasped as the scout in front of her blew up, his blood coating her and Chase.
"We're under attack!" was all she heard before more explosions erupted on the beach, drowning out the sound.
Something exploded nearby and threw her from Chase roughly. She shot up, her adrenaline overriding her shock, and looked for the attackers.
A familiar roar echoed through the air.
And then, before she could turn, she was hit hard, her world going dark.
Unknown Time...The Port...
Greer's eyes opened slowly and she coughed. She blinked trying to regain her senses. How long was she out? She slowly sat up and immediately felt dizzy. When she got the world to stop spinning, she looked around. The sand was littered with bodies both human and titan carcasses. She could feel the battle still going on, but her eyes hadn't adjusted yet. She got to her feet and finally looked around. The survey corps were going at it with about a dozen titans.
They came out of nowhere. How did they even get here?
Eren was in his titan form with Mikasa and the others using him to branch out and attack. Armin hadn't transformed yet.
Greer checked her gear, making sure it was still intact and then jogged to the nearest titan, slicing into it ruthlessly. She looked around and her eyes widened, a gasp leaving her mouth as she saw Levi hit the ground and roll, slamming into a tree away from the port. She flew over to him, dropping before him as he got to his knees slowly holding his side, pain clear on his face.
"Levi?" she touched his arm and he tensed.
"G-Greer…are you alright? I couldn't f-find you," he breathed painfully and she nodded.
"Are you alright?" she asked.
"GREER!" Evie's titan roar echoed and Greer's eyes widened.
Evie went to charge them when Eren tackled her and the two titans went at it viciously, rolling into other titans and survey corps members.
"She's not h-herself..." Levi wheezed and she knew he was hurt bad.
She glanced at his gear, which was destroyed beyond repair. She touched his head, blood trailing down into his eye from a cut she couldn't see.
Silence.
Silence.
"I hesitated. It was m-my fault. We have to retreat. H-Help the others and h-head for the w-wall," he tried to be firm, but the pain was overriding his senses.
He tried to move; to stand up, but he hissed and returned to his knees, his eyes shut tightly as pain coursed throughout his body. Greer's hold on him tightened.
Silence.
Levi looked at her.
"She's just f-following orders…we're on d-different sides. It's n-not her—"
His words were halted as Evie let out a terrifying roar and managed to overpower Eren.
"Greer, listen, you have to—"
"—no," she said simply and his eyes widened.
"What—?"
He froze as she wiped the blood from his lip. The act didn't startle him, but the fact that she was smiling did.
"You asked me to stay with you, remember? I'm staying," she said softly and he shook his head.
"That girl…Reaper…you love her?" he asked and Levi tensed.
Kenny chuckled, coughing up more blood.
"If you love her…leave her. Ackerman don't get happy endings. It's our curse," he wheezed.
Silence.
Kenny chuckled weakly.
"You're going to get her killed. It won't be your fault, but you'll be the reason she dies," he mumbled.
"And I kinda like her. Be a shame if she dies," he whispered.
She sounded almost at peace. He took her cheeks in his hands, his regular demeanor dropping completely as terror seeped into his veins. Those words his uncle had said to him were always lurking in the back of his mind, haunting him. At one point, within the past three years, it affected him so much he tried to leave her; tried to remove himself from her life. It didn't work out well.
"N-No, d-don't. Don't give up," he said wide eyed and she shook her head.
"I'm not giving up," she said and he stared at her.
Evie got the upper hand, knocking Eren back and grabbing his jaw viciously. Mikasa screamed for him as the other titans attacked the squad.
"I'm going to fix this," Greer said and Levi's eyes widened.
"Greer, don't—"
"—I thought I'd have regrets. I believed for a long time that I would. But looking at you now, being with you right here in this moment, I don't have any. You were right. We are responsible for our own choices. I want you to know that speaking to you that day and every day after was the greatest choice I'd ever made. I need you to know that if I had to do it again, I'd choose you every time. And I want to thank you for choosing me too," she continued.
Silence.
"We're going to get through this, you and me," she said and Levi couldn't find his voice.
"We can get through anything, right? If we stay together and keep choosing each other, we can get through anything," she repeated slowly taking the flare gun from the holster on his hip.
He watched her silently.
"And if we do die today then it will be together and it will be meaningful," she smiled, a few tears escaping from her eyes.
Silence.
Silence.
Levi's thumb gently wiped a tear from her cheek. Greer took in a shaky breath and took his hands in hers.
"I'm not afraid," she whispered and he leaned his head against hers as it began to rain.
"I am," he breathed in a rare moment of vulnerability.
Silence.
"Don't d-do what I think you're g-going to do. She's your f-family. Let m-me do it," he whispered and she shook her head slowly.
"She's our family. You're our family. But it has to be me," she spoke calmly and his grip tightened.
She lifted his hands to her lips, pressing a soft kiss against his skin. Then she stood up and turned, holstering the flare gun and removing her blades from their holders. Evie had just dropped Eren and was about to plant her fist into his face when Greer's blades cut into her hand viciously. Evie jolted backwards and their eyes met.
"Why are you doing this? Come on, Evie," Greer said, but Levi was right.
Even in her titan form, Greer knew her sister. Looking at her now, she didn't know this person. What had they done to her? Or was this who she was the whole time?
"Evie!" Greer yelled at her and Evie shook her off and looked around, spotting Levi.
Evie's eyes lit up and she took off towards him. Greer hooked onto her sister's shoulder, landing on it.
"Stop!" Greer shouted in her ear.
Mikasa landed by Levi.
"Captain, get on your feet," she said and Levi shook his head.
"Get out of h-here, Mikasa," he said and her eyes widened.
He called her by her first name. And his tone. It held emotion.
"It's clear she's g-going after Ackerman…you're m-making it easy f-for her to wipe us out completely..." he trailed off as blood came to his lips and he coughed harshly.
He was worried about her. And suddenly Mikasa understood what Evelyn had said that day in the hospital about Greer and Levi caring too much. She suddenly felt very protective of the man before her.
"I won't leave you," she said firmly and he looked at her.
"We're family. And I don't leave family behind," she said and Levi's eyes widened.
"Now get on your feet, Levi!" Mikasa snapped and helped him get to his feet.
"Evie, please stop! There's still time! We can fix this! We can help you!" Greer pleaded with her younger sister.
"Come on, you don't want to do this! He's our family!"
But Evie did not acknowledge her. Suddenly, Eren grabbed at Evie's legs, causing her to stumble. Greer grabbed Evie's hair and looked forward seeing Mikasa helping Levi to his feet. Her eyes widened and she pulled another blade from her sheath.
"Evelyn, please!" she tried, but Evie kept moving forward.
She managed to knock Eren off, by taking off half his head with her foot.
"Eren!" Mikasa screamed, but she didn't leave Levi's side.
Greer aimed her blade down and sunk it into the skin, cutting into Evie's arm. Evie cried out in pain and Greer flinched. Evie's skin began to harden, but the pacing was slow. She was tired.
"Please don't make me do this," Greer pleaded.
But Evie kept moving forward. Levi turned to Mikasa.
"You n-need to go—"
"—no," Mikasa said and Levi growled.
Why were the women in his life so damn stubborn?!
"I owe her. She would never leave Eren behind. I know you're just as precious to her as Eren is to me. Let's cut the bullshit," she revealed and Levi stared at her wide eyed.
"She'll stop her, I know it," Mikasa said confidently as Evie charged.
"Evie...please..." Greer whispered.
Silence.
"I'll come back, Evie. And one day this stupid war with the titans will end and I'll stay home and we'll grow old together," she grinned and Evie smiled.
"And Levi too?" she asked and Greer rolled her eyes.
"Of course," she mused and Evie laughed with Greer joining her soon after.
Silence.
Greer pulled the flare gun from her holster and fired it into Evie's neck, creating a smoke bubble that shielded her from all eyes and slowed the hardening of Evie's skin even further. Then she placed the blade two inches below the nape. Levi grabbed Mikasa and pulled her to him, turning with her so that he took the brunt of whatever attack was coming their way. He held her close and she closed her eyes tightly, gripping his arm.
"I'll come back, Evie. And one day this stupid war with the titans will end and I'll stay home and we'll grow old together," she grinned and Evie smiled.
Greer cursed, changing her mind at the last minute, and glided her blade across the titan's neck. She reached in and grabbed Evelyn's hair tightly.
"Snap out of it!" she screamed and yanked her hair back.
An electric shock ran up her arm and she cried out, letting go and falling off as Evie's titan went limp and dropped to the ground sliding and coming to a stop right in front of the two Ackerman.
"G-Greer!" Levi called alarmed.
Smoke rose from the titan mixing with the rain and spreading, shielding everyone from view.
Silence.
Silence.
Greer sat up painfully.
Silence.
Silence.
Greer climbed up on the titan's back, running to the nape. She pulled Evie out and held her close.
"G-Greer?" Evie said dazed.
Greer smiled at her younger sister weakly.
"Are you back with us?" she asked and Evie frowned lightly.
"W-What happened?" she asked and Greer's grip tightened.
Levi went to move, but grunted and stopped as the pain in his side flared up. Mikasa held him up, but he shook his head.
"Go check on Eren. I'll b-be fine," he said and she hesitated.
"Go Mikasa...please," he added quietly and she nodded and took off towards Eren.
The steam burned Greer's skin, but she ignored it as she held her sister.
"G-Greer," Levi called weakly, but she didn't hear him.
"You're in big trouble," Greer mused lightly and Evie shook her head, tears in her eyes.
"Oh god...what did I do?" she whispered horrified and Greer brushed a few tears from her cheeks.
"We'll talk on it when we get home," Greer said exhausted.
Suddenly, Armin's voice rang out.
"Get out of there!" Armin screamed at them, seeing a titan right on top of them.
"Greer!"
Levi dropped to his knees by Greer. He had lost all color in his face and blood oozed out of his mouth. Greer stared at him wide eyed, her senses returning for a moment.
"Levi—"
She froze as he pulled her into him, holding her tightly against him, as he tried to shield them from the impending blow as much as possible. They both shut their eyes and he buried his face in her neck waiting for it.
Silence.
Silence.
A loud roar and then a booming sound deafened their ears. Their bodies tensed and Greer slowly pulled away to look. She gasped and Levi turned slightly, his eyes wide.
"GET ON!" the unfamiliar titan snapped and held out its hand.
Greer saw that the other titan that was approaching them had been decapitated as well as all the other titans around them.
"NOW!" the titan screeched and Levi grabbed Greer's hand and pulled her onto the titan's open palm with Evie still in Greer's arms.
"ON ME!" the titan yelled to the remaining scouts.
The remaining survey corps scouts landed on it as it took off into the forest.
I hope everyone enjoyed it! Please let me know your thoughts by reviewing please! I love and NEED my reviews!
