Chapter 25.
=Hiccup's POV=
[November 14; Morning]
[Hunter Ship; Sea]
All this time that I'd been with the dragon hunters, I felt incomplete. I knew it was because I was missing the part that made me whole. I was missing Toothless. I had said for the longest time that I didn't believe Toothless was gone, and I held on despite the pain of each day that passed, and Toothless wasn't with me. Yes, I got close to the hunters; they earned my trust and friendship, but I still felt alone without my best bud at my side. My friendship with the dragon hunters was real and helped me feel a lot better, but it didn't fill the void to make me complete. That was until last night when as I was about to get some sleep after another fun evening, I kept hearing roaring, and I recognized it after the second time of it belonging to a Night Fury.
I was shocked, of course. What were the chances a random Night Fury was calling for help? Pretty slim given Toothless and I scavenged as much as we could to find them. No, as soon as I realized a Night Fury was calling for help, I felt the spark of hope in my heart explode and overtake me. The feeling of hope, joy, and being whole again hit hard; I knew it was the bond, the one I have with Toothless. Feeling complete, I knew Toothless was alive, and everything I felt was because we were close to one another. It was our bond telling us we were near each other, and to act right away if we wanted to be reunited. All the hunters supported me finding Toothless, were willing to help me. I even hugged Viggo and Ryker.
Once I found Toothless, he was already unconscious on that beach. Cinder and I got him safely to the ship, and once I made sure he was breathing and okay, I cried myself to sleep against him. I realize that I did when I woke up early this morning to find a blanket over me and that I was against my best friend. Only feeling relief when I made sure he was still alive, I got comfortable and fell back asleep. Now, I'm up again as it's about 8:30 in the morning, but I haven't left Toothless's side. I still couldn't believe it, we were finally back together, and nothing would separate us again. I swear this on everything I stand for; I would never lose Toothless again.
I was still lying against his chest, and I rubbed the side of his shoulder gently. "I promise, Toothless, nothing and no one will ever separate us again…" I sighed softly.
"Oh, you are awake," Came Ryker's voice as I shifted a bit to see him and Viggo standing there.
"We thought you might be sleeping until you talked," Viggo added.
"I've been up for about fifteen minutes, and I just didn't want to leave him…" I admitted.
"It's understandable, Hiccup. Don't worry," Viggo smiled. "How are you feeling?"
"Sore, but that's what I get when I sleep against Toothless…" I chuckled a little as I carefully sat up and got to my feet. After a bit of shifting and stretching, I felt better. "I wonder when he'll wake up,"
"I suppose we'll have to wait and see," Ryker suggested. "Are you hungry?"
"Not yet," I shook my head. I was more focused on Toothless right now; I wasn't worried about eating.
"I don't think I've ever seen you look happier than you do right now," Viggo pointed out.
I smiled a little. "Amazing what feeling whole again can change, huh?" I said while looking at Toothless. "It doesn't make me healed or recovered…But it makes it easier to cope, and I finally don't feel so alone anymore." I rubbed the side of Toothless's head gently. "Not saying you guys didn't have an impact, but it didn't fill the void all the way, you know?" I paused. "Not just him, but all of you do…"
"We understand," Ryker assured with a chuckle.
"I take it he's not going to be too happy to see us when he wakes up?" Viggo stated.
"He'll be fine after I explain you saved me, and you earn his trust," I grinned a little.
"How did I know that was coming?" Ryker sighed. I laughed a bit. "Is it going to take months as it did with you?"
"No," I shook my head to them. "It's much easier than it was with me, but no guarantees that he doesn't take you on the terrifying flight of your lives until you apologize for all you did to me as he did to Astrid," I shrugged.
"I'm afraid to know," Viggo remarked.
"You probably should be, but you don't have to worry about that until I get him back in the air, which won't be until we reach your home island, and I get access to a forge…If you don't mind, that is?" I hoped.
"No, not at all. I'm rather curious to see you rebuild the rig," Viggo informed.
"I might give him another automatic tail, if he lets me," I mumbled and saw Viggo and Ryker's faces shift to confusion. "Our first Snoggletog with the dragons, Toothless couldn't take off and fly with the rest going to the Hatching Grounds, so I built him a tail that let him fly without my help. He took off for a couple of days and returned the night before Snoggletog; come to find out that he only went to find my helmet that was lost when we were on our morning flight." I smiled and looked at Toothless now.
"The next morning, when I woke up for the flight, he'd pulled out the old rig to go flying; I told him he didn't need me to fly anymore…The pain in my butt went and smashed the automatic tail to pieces and pushed the rig towards me…" I trailed off a bit. "That's when I understand that given a choice to fly on his own or with me…He chose me. Toothless didn't want to carry me like the other dragons carry their riders. Toothless wanted to fly with me or not at all."
"He trusts you with his life," Ryker noted.
"And I trust him with mine…" I rubbed his face again. "But I'm still going to try with another automatic; he might have grown out of it. We'll see, he's a stubborn reptile," I rolled my eyes with a smile. "Ain't that right, big baby boo?" I chuckled. "Unholy offspring of lightning and death itself my butt…You're a harmless lizard with wings," I teased him. Out of nowhere, I got whacked in the head and heard a disapproving huff. "Ow! You know it's true, Too-," I stopped when I realized he was the one who hit me, with his tail, as always. I quickly moved to get in front of his face.
"Toothless?!" My eyes were wide as I saw his eyes opened a little. I was probably going to cry again. "Hey, bud…Good morning…" I rubbed his snout a little as he woke up more and gave his usual croon to greet me. "Oh, thank the Gods…You're awake and okay…" I breathed out in relief. As if the reality hit Toothless that I was there, he quickly raised his head and looked at me with fully opened eyes now. Toothless warbled curiously at me as I got the message he was asking. A few tears slipped as I nodded to him. "It's real, Toothless…I'm real, I'm here, buddy."
Toothless instantly forced himself to get up on his legs, then sit up on the back ones, staring intently at me. "I know, I know…I look different, but I promise it's me, Toothless…" I turned my head with my eyes closed and put my hand out to him, and that was all it took for Toothless to be sure. I felt his snout to my palm as I looked over at him to see his eyes closed. "That's my Toothless," I smiled. Toothless opened his eyes and immediately started licking and nudging my face while whining. "Ssh, ssh…It's okay. It's alright, bud…Everything is going to be alright now…" I set my hands on the sides of his face and looked into his eyes.
"I'm here, and you're here…" I soothed him. "We're okay now. We're away from all the bad, and the nightmare is finally over for both of us…It's all going to be okay now." Toothless pressed his forehead to mine, closing his eyes, and I closed mine. "Gods, I've missed you, Toothless…" I felt my voice breaking. "I missed you so much…And I swear on my life that nothing will ever separate us again. Nothing and no one…" I vowed. Toothless purred from deep in his throat, staying in our somewhat of an embrace. Toothless and I finally pulled back a bit and looked at one another.
"Aw," The healers and some of the hunters said over the scene.
I saw Toothless's eyes dart around to the others on the boat now, and lock on to something. I only assumed it was Viggo and Ryker. This could be bad. Toothless's pupils turned a bit thinner as he growled and dropped down to all four legs in a pounce-ready position.
"I think he finally noticed us," Ryker commented to Viggo.
"What was your first indication of that being the case!?" Viggo snapped, unamused by Ryker's sarcasm. The anger only made Toothless growl more, baring his teeth as they dropped from his gums. Toothless protectively brought his tail up to protect me.
"Easy, dragon…" Ryker put his hands up, not realizing he had a dagger in the right from helping cut something before Toothless woke up.
Oh, man… I thought. I saw others get nervous and reach for something to protect themselves with. "No!" I yelled quickly. "No weapons! Put them back where they were and step away," I instructed.
"How do we know he won't attack us?!" Ryker asked.
"If he were going to attack you, he would have done it already! Trust me, put the weapons down. If you unarm yourselves, he will relax," I informed. Viggo gave the nod for them to do as I said, and slowly, they all set their weapons down and pushed them away out of grabbing reach. Toothless stopped growling and baring his fangs, but the look of I will kill you if you try anything was clear in his eyes. "See? Everything is fine…" I said gently as Toothless set his tail down, and I moved closer to them.
"He's still glaring at us," Viggo remarked.
"He's going to until you earn his trust," I reminded. "Just like with me, all I knew you as were my enemies and what you had done against me. Toothless is going to be the same way until you show him otherwise,"
"So what do we do then? You said it was easier than getting you to trust us," Ryker inquired.
"I will show you, but you have to trust me and do as I say," I stated.
"We do trust you, but he hates us…" Ryker countered.
"I took his tail fin off, and he doesn't hate me. He bit my left leg off, but I don't hate him. We still came together as best friends through trust and understanding. He's a dragon, and you're dragon hunters…There's bound to be some animosity until you show him you won't hurt him and that he can trust you won't go back on it…Just like how you had to show me you wanted my trust, and wouldn't break it…" I explained. "I still want peace, and you still want your business…But we get along fine otherwise, don't we? We still inhabit the same space and are friends. Toothless can do the same I do, but only if you show him he can trust you…"
Giving in, Viggo and Ryker sighed but nodded to me. "What must we do?" Viggo asked.
"Remove all weapons from you and your reach," I started. "But slowly…" I added after. Toothless watching intently as the brothers stripped off their weapons and pushed them out of their immediate reach. "Now, to get Toothless's trust…You have to give him yours. It's meant more than one way, though. You have to give him your trust that you won't hurt him, and that you trust him not to hurt you. Erase your fear of dragons, that they'll take the first chance to attack and kill you. Don't be afraid, relax. There can't be any room for doubt. You have to give him your trust as you gave me yours, full confidence, and no lies."
Viggo and Ryker looked at one another, then took a breath while looking at Toothless. "Good. Put out hands to him, palms up." I said. Viggo and Ryker did as told, as Toothless started to growl again. "Easy, bud. I know the past we've had with them, but they don't want to hurt you or me," I put my hand on Toothless's head. "Lower your hands," I told the brothers as Toothless huffed a bit. "Yes, I know they still kill dragons…But they saved me after everything on Johann's ship," Toothless growled at that, nudging his head into my chest. "I know, I know…Don't you worry, we're gonna get back at them for what they did to us…I promise. Viggo and Ryker want to help, they've given me their trust and I gave them mine. Along with my friendship…"
Toothless made a sound like a mumble and gave an eye roll. "Oh, don't even start. You know you're still my best friend, and nobody can take your place…" I let him croon and nuzzle my face. "Please, Toothless? For me?" I asked. Toothless sighed and eyed the brothers again. I smiled and got closer to his ear. "I think I can change their minds, and get them to stop hunting dragons…They've told me they think I can change their minds too…But I can't do it myself. I need your help because we've always done this together, bud…I'm not me without you. All the minds we've changed about dragons, it was us together…So I need you to help me out here," I whispered.
Toothless looked at me, then he bumped his forehead to mine and I smiled. "Thank you," Toothless motioned his head towards the fish bucket and gave a gummy grin. "Oh. Oh, okay. I get it now."
"What?" Viggo and Ryker asked.
"So Toothless has decided that because he loves me; he'll give you his trust," I started.
"I sense a but coming," Ryker mumbled.
I moved over to the fish bucket and grabbed one, then tossed it to Toothless as he ate it down in two bites. "But he has one itty-bitty condition for you to show him you want his trust," I chuckled with my arms folded. The brothers stood still, a bit concerned, and waiting as Toothless regurgitated the fish he just ate at their feet and sat down on his back legs. At that moment, I saw Viggo and Ryker pale, realizing what Toothless wanted from them.
"You can't-," Viggo began.
"Be serious," Ryker finished for Viggo.
"I'm not the one standing trial against the Night Fury here. You want him to trust you, show Toothless you trust him and want to be his friend." I said with a shrug. "I don't want to hear nothing about the task; I had to do it too. This was part of me earning his trust. I had to show him he could trust me."
"Do we really have to eat it?" Ryker eyed the fish.
"At least one bite, and you have to swallow it too. Toothless will know if you don't…" I smiled. Viggo picked up the fish and held it out to Ryker to go first.
"You're the oldest," Viggo said calmly.
Ryker pushed it back. "You're the chief, the honor belongs to you, little brother,"
"Oh, for the love of Thor…" I walked up and took the fish from them, then used my dagger to cut three pieces off the part Toothless spit-up. I handed one to Viggo, and one to Ryker. "As the dragon trainer, I'll set the example…" I remarked before popping the piece into my mouth and swallowing it. "See? No harm is done. It won't kill you, I promise. Just put it in your mouth and swallow, no chewing necessary. It's gross, I know, and you'll probably want to hurl. But trust me, eventually, you get used to this working with dragons all the time."
Viggo and Ryker looked at Toothless, who was almost smirking at them before they tossed the pieces of raw, regurgitated fish in their mouths. The looks on their faces were priceless and I was drawing it later for sure. The two managed to swallow the morsel I'd cut off for them, and keep it down. Toothless gave a toothy-hiss like snicker as I laughed a little with him. "I know, it was totally worth it to see their faces. But come on…They did their part, let's play fair," I reminded my friend.
Toothless nodded to me and faced the brothers again. "This time, I want you close your eyes, turn your heads away and down while putting your hands out with the palm open again. Do not move, and do not lift your heads or open your eyes." I instructed firmly. Viggo and Ryker closed their eyes, turned their head away and down with their hands up, then stayed that way as I gave Toothless the head nod to go ahead. Toothless leaned closer, closing his eyes and pressing his snout to their hands. "Now, you can look again," Viggo and Ryker did so, now seeing Toothless with his eyes closed and allowing them to touch him.
"You gave him your trust, and this is him giving you his," I mentioned as the brothers still stood there, not moving their hands as Toothless opened his eyes and looked directly at them. "As I tell everyone…Dragon training begins and ends with trust. It's not enough that you say you're not scared, or whatever. You have to give them your trust that they won't hurt you if you turn away and offer yourself to them. And then they will give you their trust by closing their eyes and allowing you to touch them. That is why even after I had you look his way, his eyes were still closed, allowing you to see that he has dropped his guard and given you his trust you won't hurt him." I explained.
"What did eating the fish have to do with trust?" Olga wondered.
I chuckled as Toothless pulled his head away from Viggo and Ryker as they lowered their hands. Toothless darted in to lick both of them along the sides of their face, and then I actually laughed. "The fish was nothing more then Toothless wanting to have a little fun and see just how far they were willing to go to get his trust," Viggo and Ryker stood there, almost stunned from being licked. "You get used to that too, and it doesn't wash out," I winked. Yeah, I could absolutely change their minds. Now that I had Toothless, it wasn't even going to be much of a challenge anymore. I wasn't worried about much anymore, not with Toothless by my side. I was finally started to feel okay; I had a long way to go, but I knew I would get there with time, my new friends, and my best friend who is a dragon.
